VIDEO: Turkish Economy Suffering Big-Time From Israeli Tourist Boycott

By Debbie Schlussel

So sad, too bad.  Constantinople’s, er . . .Turkey’s economy is suffering big-time from its actions in sponsoring the HAMAS Gaza war flotilla and video scenes of sundry Turkish barbarians trying to storm the Israeli Embassy in Istanbul. Israeli tourists are canceling and leaving in droves, and so are their shekels. And, as some citizens of Turkey are now learning, it hurts to support HAMAS.

Turkey’s HAMAS Gaza War Flotilla Costin’ Big Tourism Bucks

Israel’s Channel Two (it’s in Hebrew, so I’m giving you non-Hebrew speakers the talking points) reports that Israeli tourism is 2.5% of Turkey’s tourist industry.  And hotels, spas, and tourist guides are hurting, particularly in Antalya in Southern Turkey, where whole hotels remain empty and the normally crowded poolside is abandoned.  Antalya, Marmaris, and Bodrum, Turkey rely heavily on Israeli tourists in particular.  And they are all suffering now.  A Bodrum hotel owner says that Israeli tourists are 50-70% of his guests and that they all canceled.  His hotel is largely empty, and he’s already lost a million dollars, he told Channel Two.  It’s funny to hear the hotel owner blame the Israelis and not his own country’s policies toward Israel and his own fellow citizens’ violent riots at the Israeli Embassy.  Watch the video, even if  you don’t speak Hebrew, because the scenes are stark (and there is some English spoken by the Turks interviewed by phone).  According to Channel Two, only 1,000 Israelis remain in Turkey, and most of them are leaving as soon as possible.

FYI, as I told you, for the last four years, the Turkish government produced and aired “Kurtlar Vadisi [Valley of the Wolves]” movies and TV shows vilifying Jews, Israel, and America, including showing Israeli Embassy officials as kidnappers and murderers of Turkish women and babies.  No Israeli should have gone there.  But some did, even after last year’s Turkish government attacks on Israel for going into Gaza in January 2009.  Still, after that, Turkey also noticed a drop in tourism.  This English language video, from 2009, shows that in spades.

Wonderful news!

As goes Israel - so goes the World on June 3, 2010 at 2:54 pm

Yeah sure it hurts turkey in the pocket but in the end just because your not getting the money you usually do from the jews dont mean you made the wrong choice of who you are supporting. Thats why no one likes jews, the think everything is about money. They are greedy evil people. Based on this post im going to guess you Debbie are a jew since you think turkey made the wrong choice of supporting hamas simply because of the money.

    Hi Debbie, great post.

SHame you’ve got some readers here who are antiSemitic little deadheads who don’t get that the Christian world forbade Jews from earning their living in any professions and from owning land, but oh so generously gave them the despised money-lending trades. Oh, and thieved the money from them afterwards of course. i’ve never heard Jews ever talk about money to the same extent as non-Jews – never!
Business, yes, money no. And Jews in general are far more generous than a lot of self-styled Christians/secular types.
leftists in particular are the meanest of people financially.

Just projecting their meanness onto Jews as usual, following the example of centuries of Church propaganda.
And if the Turks don’t get that they’re being boycotted becaseu of their governement’s assault on Israel, then they’re too stupid to live.

    Hope yo

I had hoped someday to visit, among other places, Israel and Constantinople (Istan? Bull!). Since Constantinople is still illegally occupied by barbarians, I’ll spend an extra week in Israel.

And, hey, #2 respondent, think about critical thinking skills and maybe a little remediation in grammar, spelling, and sentence structure.

Turkey is responsible for the losses to its economy. Its made an enemy of Israel and it may be a long time before relations are anywhere near tolerable again. And they won’t be as long as Turkey is run by Islamists.

hahahahahhahahaha one of your best posts so far! TURKEY suffers from israeli boycott.?!?!??!?!.. even if all the 5 million israelis visit turkey every year, it wouldn’t make up 25 % of it’s tourism. I don’t should I feel sorry for you or are you just beeing funny?

And now I’m sure more gulf arabs will visit turkey… sorry but noone can compete whith the gulfis in tourism.

z on June 3, 2010 at 7:07 pm

now I’ve checked a little bit of facts almost 30,900,000 visit turkey every year…and you’re talking about israeli boycott?????

z on June 3, 2010 at 7:15 pm

Those sites which, for years, had catered to Israeli Jews will over time transition to other groups – Israeli Arabs, for example, who don’t mind that their country is boycotted. Or their new best buds’, Syrians and Iranians. Israel might also consider checking the source of any new appliances they’re considering, as many are made in Turkey.

What would hurt even more would require the Israeli government to finally realize that Turkey is neither friend nor ally and thus end their military sales and support. Only a few months ago, Israel finally delivered advanced drones (it was delayed because Turkey wanted it fitted with some Turkish-made component), and last year Israel completed a major overhaul of Turkey’s tanks – all of which could easily be loaned to Syria in a future conflict. They did at least deny last month a Turkish request for some advanced naval hardware, so at least they’re starting to face reality.

Raymond in DC on June 3, 2010 at 7:46 pm

well tit for that then
Israel can arm up and support the KURDS who TURK bought the weapons to continue oppression and occupation of KURDHISH lands and persecution of their people- the real RACIST IMPERIALISTIC GENOCIDERS are TURK

and all those formerly secular TURKS can go under burqas and start lifting ass 5x a day- so they may join the rest of Pisslamic world in being non productive and proressing back to 12th century ideals-

Jews can make nukes and computeres the most advanced technologies I am quite sure making a washing machine or fridge is not a big problem for them

Isahiah62 on June 3, 2010 at 8:28 pm

Turkey wants to step into the propaganda war of human rights in the middle east? First, let it come clean on its dirty little secret – The Armenian Genocide. They STILL deny it. It was an atrocity – the 20th century’s first holocaust – that they committed and refuse to acknowledge. A Turkish journalist was assassinated last year for stepping up and WRITING about.
Israel should get a shipload of Armenians to embargo the ports – let the Turks face their recent past war crimes in the face on their way to guiding a “freedom flotilla” – what utter hypocrisy.

Another excellent post, Debbie.

I have several times here cited Genesis 12:1-3–usually in response to people who come here on this site to spew anti-Jewish propaganda or slurs. This is the latest example of how this is indeed so.

Another Christian minister murdered yesterday. Of course 5 or six raped infidels. The usual count. The country is a bigoted, misogynistic cess-pit that has existed by murder, torture and theft.

Get them where it hurts the most: The wallet!!!
Bet ya it would work on all the countries we distastefully have to deal with. Stop feeding their paycheck and see what happens.

theShadow on June 3, 2010 at 10:49 pm

Turkey used to have a fine secular tradition. Several years ago, during the Bush Administration, the Turkish military was making rumblings that they were prepared to put down the Islamist Erdogan government. Unfortunately, Sec. of State Condi Rice publicly scolded the Turkish military and warned them not to do it.

What a shame!

Had the Turkish military intervened, the U.S. and Israel might still have a reliable Muslim ally in the Middle East. Now, we are witnessing Iran II.

The Turks are going to suffer for this and they won’t find sympathy from a Europe that already scorns them.

It hardly surprises me that Israelis no longer want to visit Turkey. The Erdogan government has made its enmity toward Israel known for many years. The notion that this suddenly happened in the wake of the “flotilla incident” is just another big media LIE.

What a shame! In the heyday of Turkish/Israeli relations, there was so much potential. Too bad the Turks threw it all away to pursue an Islamist policy.

Israel will continue to develop and grow their economy. Turkey will stagnate and wallow in their Islamism.

drew299 on June 4, 2010 at 12:01 am

hi all,

I have read the news and I came just to remind you that this is not the way to solve any problems. I am from Turkey, and I don’t support Hamas. But Israeli tourists not coming to Turkey is not a real problem. Remember the Danish cartoonist depicting Mohammed caused a boycott of Denmark in Muslim world? At that time the Christians kicked in and the Denmark got out of the crisis with surplus.

So, probably there will be Muslim people coming to Turkey by dosens. This will accomplish almost exactly what the current Government wants to do; a Radical Muslim Turkey…

So acting carefully is the key here.

And last but not least there are still a few Jewish Turks in Turkey and this type action will make their lives much harder.. Even in the case they are against Isreali government.

kirpi on June 4, 2010 at 3:53 am

kirpi, your military failed you, and now you are stuck with an Islamic state.

True, boycotts by travelers will not do anything (unless the boycott is implemented by countries that contribute a lot more than 2.5% of the total). It is still a good thing for Israelis to respond in concrete, personal ways.

Nor is it reasonable that Israel should be conditioning its policy based on Jews who remain in Turkey and the likely pogroms that Muslims will perpetrate against these Jews. You should be ashamed of even attempting to divert blame from Turks themselves.

The most reasonable start to this business is to expel Turkey from NATO . . . unless of course the military implements an coup and returns Turkey to secular rule.

Naturally, this will not happen under the leadership of Hussein (and wouldn’t have happened under Bush).

skzion on June 4, 2010 at 12:31 pm

kirpi, I would not put it past Islamist Turks carrying out pogroms against the Turkish Jewish population (they need to get out of Turkey NOW), this would not be Israel’s fault, but your own since your media and govt lie about Israel all the time, just like the rest of the world.

Not only should Israelis stop going to Turkey (agreed they should have stopped going years ago), they should stop visiting Europe and the UK if they can help it, how are they any different?

Btw Obama’s sickening response to this invented crisis on Larry King is just his usual Jew-hate MO. We actually need to call him the Jew-hater he is at the highest levels. If you object we can’t afford to, the truth is we can’t afford not to.

Larry70 on June 4, 2010 at 8:09 am

There’s a Turkish baklava chain with a location down the street from my work. Don’t spend a penny there now adn neither do any of my friends and coworkers. Maybe this company is not full of Jew-hating barbarians but we don’t want a penny of our money flowing in any way shape or form back to Turkey.

ShmeeAvram on June 4, 2010 at 10:01 am

Turkey is due for a nice big earthquake. This time though, Israel better not be racing in to help out while the Muslim nations sit on their asses, abusing people, and plotting jihad crap as usual.

ZooKeeper on June 4, 2010 at 10:05 am

Turkey has the 13th largest economy in the world and has been growing at a rate of 7.34% p.a. (apart from 2009); it has a deficit which is 34% of GDP (much lower than Israel’s 78%).

Erdogan has been responsibile for curbing inflation and praised by IMF for fiscal responsibility.

Israli tourism makes up less than 1% of Turkish GDP. This will not hurt Turkey; but bilateral tariff hikes/boycott by Turkey will hurt the Israel economy.

Debbie please do more research or read an economics text book (i recommend N. Gregory Mankiw).

SS: Looks like it’s you who needs to do your homework. I was quoting the Israeli Channel Two which says Israeli tourism is 2.5% of Turkey’s tourism industry. Being a Sikh, one would think you’d know the dangers Muslims pose. DS

Israel trade unions might renew their explicit boycott of Turkey as a destination for their members, in view of Ankara’s role in organizing the aid flotilla to the Gaza Strip.

The boycott began more than a year ago, prompted by tension over the Israeli military operation in Gaza, but since the start of 2010 the number of Israelis vacationing in Turkey has risen by 18%.

Debbie,

What I find interesting is that there is no mention of the Mardan Palace, which was built in Turkey by Telman Ismailov which is quoted as being a rich Russian in media. He is, in fact, Jewish. He is probably the richest man in Russia and everyone there knows he is Jewish.

I beleive it’s his DUTY to close down the hotel to prove a point to the Turks. I doubt this will happen though. I can only imagine how many jobs this world class hotel provides and Turkey does not deserve these riches if they treat Jews/Israel this way.

Anna on August 25, 2010 at 3:54 pm

Why does the Muslim hatred and jealousy of the west never get mentioned. Why does the Muslim society contribute nothing but oil and terrorists to the world. Why are women treated so poorly in Muslim society? Is this just my imagination?
Religion of Peace?

These stupid people blaming Israel and Jews for everything, and every problem. There are only an insignificant number of Jews.
How many Muslims are there? A billion, at least?
