Poetic Justice?: U.N. Peacekeepers Aided Hezbollah in 2000 Kidnapping of Israeli Soldiers

By
We are not shedding too many tears over the accidental Israeli killing of U.N. “peacekeepers” (a misnomer if there ever was one).
While we are sorry for any innocents who lost their lives, it’s a tad of poetic justice for the U.N. in Lebanon. Why?
Well, to those who forgot–apparently, that includes the entire mainstream media–the U.N. aided and abetted Hezbollah in the October 2000 abduction of three Israeli soldiers at Har Dov, Israel. They turned a blind eye to the kidnapping, and it is believed they provided Hezbollah with U.N. uniforms, insignia, and vehicles. The U.N. for months denied knowledge of the attack and kidnapping or that it had a tape, which it had all along and withheld, aiding Hezbollah.

Here’s an excerpt from a 2001 article from Israeli newspaper Ha’Aretz, which is posted in its entirety at the International Coalition for Missing Israeli Soldiers site:

Friday, July 6, 2001 Haaretz Daily Newspaper – English Internet Edition
By Amos Harel, Yossi Verter and Shlomo Shamir
UN Admits it has a Videotape of Soldiers’ Kidnap
Defense Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer yesterday announced that United Nations officials last Friday acknowledged the existence of a video tape with information on the kidnapping of three IDF soldiers by Hezbollah guerrillas at Har Dov on October 7, 2000. Israeli security sources suspect the tape has scenes recorded immediately after the abduction. In a strongly worded letter, the government demanded that the United Nations immediately transfer the tape to Israel.
Israeli officials had insisted for months that the cassette existed, but the UN adamantly rejected the claim. According to Ben-Eliezer, information about the existence of the tape was leaked from New York.
While it is still unclear what the recording contains, two pictures, showing UN tow trucks removing two vehicles used by the Hezbollah guerrillas during the kidnapping were shown last night on both Israeli television news channels.
The pictures were acquired by Shlomi Afrayat, owner of Topline in Kiryat Shmona, who has worked for months to make contact with the persons responsible for the recording. Afrayat is not in possession of the original tape.
“The scene was taped 18 hours after the abduction of the three soldiers”, said Timor Goksel, spokesman for UNIFIL (UN interim force in Lebanon) peacekeepers in south Lebanon. “It contains footage of abandoned vehicles the Iran-backed Hezbollah guerrillas used in the attack,” he added.
“Inside the vehicles, UN peacekeepers found UN insignia, uniforms and license plates along with weapons and explosives,” Goksel said. . . .
Israeli security officials suspect that the UN soldiers witnessed the attack and may have turned a blind eye to Hezbollah preparations to carry it out.

So, as for the U.N. “Peacekeepers,” our response is: War is hell. You chose to go. And to be involved in an organization that works with Hezbollah in a very friendly manner.

Because Deb is smart. The U.N. has connections to Hezzbollah? Here’s a conspiracy theory worth wondering, during 9/11, the WTC and Pentagon were attacked. The purpose? To make a terror impact on the world. My question is: Wouldn’t the U.N. be a beter target? Wouldn’t Osama want to instill fear on the and not just the U.S.? U.N. Hezzbollah. U.N. safe from 9/11. Maybe it’s me but do you see a pattern?

The U.N. is no doubt composed of many anti-Israeli nations who see Israel as the little bully in the Mid-East and the U.S. as its enabler big bully in the West. I think the 9/11 attacks on the U.S. reveal the truth of that. When cowards don’t have an army that could defeat a Mexico, for example, they have to resort to such tactics. Why no attacks on the U.N.? Why would you attack a tool that is so useful to you? That is, if you were Hezbollah or Osama.
The topic of U.N. involvement is well worth exploring. It’s amazing what one finds when a large rock is overturned. If done correctly, this would guarantee much televised airtime.
My question though is: The U.S. and/or Israel could utterly destroy both Iran and Syria with collateral damage kept to a minimum within two weeks. We’ve tried appeasement (the soft feminine approach) for decades. We know the results and we know what the outcome will be — yet again. Now, what if instead we informed both Syria and Iran that any more terror will result in their complete destruction as functioning societies? Thus, rendering their stated goals of Israeli and U.S. destruction as nothing more than faded memories. Why isn’t this done? What are we afraid of? If it were done now, the lives lost would be relatively minimal.
Instead, we give them time, all the time they need to develop their nuclear ambitions. All the time they, and their allies, need to strengthen themselves militarily. We are only delaying the inevitable. And it’s inevitable because THEY, not us, make it that way. Only one nation on earth is presently capable of causing us much harm — the crippled Russia. But would they?
We prefer peaceful resolutions to the difficulties. Unfortunately, they do not and obviously will not. Shall we try one last time?

WE FIGHT THE SAME ENEMY-

Yes, lukas21, we do indeed fight the same enemy. My concern, which I admit may be somewhat unusal, is for the entire West, of which Israel is also a part. Not just any ONE particular Western nation.

I say “tough.” The UN is ingrained with a knee-jerk habit of blaming Israel even before responsibility is ascertained. This by no means the only time in this war the UN made its mind up. Its decided to drop its ostensibly neutral status to fix roads in southern Lebanon which would help Hezbollah move men and war supplies to the front. And Hezbollah is using the advantage of UN positions from which to fire at Israeli forces. So it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if Israel sought to hit those positions and it ended up hitting the UN personnel.
A better question is why the UN didn’t evacuate positions it should have known where in harm’s way? Oh the chutzpah. But its OK to blame the Jews for your own failures, which among other things, include being chummy with the terrorists you are supposed to stop.
And they wonder in Turtle Bay why Israel doesn’t take them seriously. There is a communication problem but what transpired – doesn’t by any means – make what happened Israel’s fault.

I know I shouldn’t have, but when I learned that Israel had blasted 4 UN ‘observers,’ I cheered and hooted. (A Finn, a ChiCom, and 2 others?)
CNN spoke with an Irish UN soldier this morning and amazingly, this UN-er was asked if there was a possibility that Hezbollweavil had used this UN site to fire rockets at Israel.
He had no comment.
I’m afraid that this event will come back to harm Israel in some way, and I’m even beginnng to wonder if it was a deliberate attack. There are ‘powers’ in the Israeli government that are working to harm the Jews and Israel, and blasting UN-ers into bits may have been planned to do just thast.
Can you say Shimon Peres? Did you notice that world ‘conference’ on Lebanon that met in Rome today?
