Hmmm . . . Why Wasn’t This Michigan Militia Raided By the FBI?

By Debbie Schlussel

As George Orwell might have written, all of the citizen militias in the barnyard are equal, but some are more equal than others.

When the FBI recently raided and rounded up members of the Hutaree militia in Michigan and Ohio, I said to myself, “Well, if they were Muslim (and not Black), they’d have been safe to carry on.” In fact, we’ve seen no evidence whatsoever that, as federal prosecutors claim, the Hutaree members were about to kill anyone, police or otherwise, so I’ll reserve judgment until–and if–I see it. For now, I find the violent, anti-American rhetoric in local mosques–who also train with guns and in the martial arts in rural Michigan–far more threatening and of immediate danger.

islamiccrescentmattsavinomuslim

Scary: Muslim Matt Savino & His Michigan Militia Escape FBI Scrutiny

And, apparently, my view about the religion of the Hutarees–they are Christian, not Muslim–has been confirmed as a reason for them being targeted.  You see, there’s another militia in Michigan, which trains the same way and does the same things.  And whaddya know?  They weren’t raided, weren’t arrested, weren’t indicted, and aren’t now sitting rotting in jail without bond.  And that’s even though  the particular militia is based in Michigan’s Lenawee County (where several Hutaree members are based) and its leader is friends with some of the arrested Hutarees.

mattsavinojonthankiersten

Muslim Michigan Militia Leader Matt Savino Trains Kids Johnathan and Kiersten

Well, the religion of their leader seems to be a pretty good reason why:

Since nine members of the Hutaree militia, including five people from Lenawee County, were arrested for plotting to kill law enforcement officials, members of another local militia have sought to emphasize their difference from those arrested. . . .

Matt Savino [is] commander of the Lenawee Volunteer Michigan Militia, a brigade of a larger group called the Michigan Militia Corps Wolverines. . . .

In fact, members of his group were prepared to help in a sting operation to arrest the final Hutaree member on the run, Savino said.

Savino said his group had occasional contacts with the Hutaree militia. . . .

Savino also said his group spends about half its time on survival and self-reliance training, such as making bows and arrows in the woods or learning how to set snares for small game or purify water. They also are participating in the adopt-a-highway program for a stretch of U.S. 223 west of Blissfield to help keep the highway clean, Savino said.

Big deal. The Klan participates in adopt-a-highway, too. That’s not the key part. Here’s the money quote:

The group’s Web site declares that it is open to people of all races, cultures and beliefs, and that it encourages involvement in the political process but leaves individual political decisions up to its members. Savino himself is a Muslim, having converted from Lutheranism in 1998, he said.

“The militia doesn’t discriminate,” Savino said. “We don’t get into the whole religion thing.”

He and his brother started the Lenawee Volunteer Michigan Militia in 2006, Savino said. The group has about 10 members who attend training and other events regularly, and five more who attend sporadically, Savino said.

mattsavinomuslim2mattsavinotraining

Muslim Militia Leader Matt Savino Trains for War

As one reader from Lenawee County writes:

The leader of this Michigan militia is a Muslim, that is scary.

“The militia doesn’t discriminate,” Savino said. “We don’t get into the whole religion thing.”

Yeah right. I do hope the FBI is watching them.

More like breaking pita with them. . . and watching the butt they’re kissing.

Now, if they were Christian . . . .

For now, the federal case against the Hutarees seems to be nothing more than religious discrimination.  There is no difference between Savino and the Hutarees . . . but for the “M” word.  And it doesn’t stand for “Militia” or “Michigan.”

Or, perhaps the Feds didn’t arrest Savino and his militia because they were not plotting to kill law enforcement officials, and then to attack the funerals of those law enforcement officials?

an honest question on April 7, 2010 at 12:24 pm

Here’s an honest question…”Where’s the proof any of that was planned?”

All I’ve seen so far is hearsay.

I believe that this raid was done to justify Napalitano’s comments after she took office that law enforcement need to monitor militia’s

ebayer on April 7, 2010 at 1:28 pm

The allegations are in the indictment. The proof has been presented to the grand jury that issued the indictment, and will be presented to the jury that will hear the case. It’s not the prosecution’s job (or the FBI’s, for that matter) to convict criminals in the public’s eye; it’s their job to convict criminals in a court of law. Let the legal process work.

an honest question on April 7, 2010 at 2:02 pm

Seems to me they’ve already been found guilty in your eyes because of the dis-information released to the public by law enforcement through the media.

The only reason they were denied bail was to keep the illusion of guilt going by law enforcement to justify this strong arming action.

E: Huh? Did you not read what I wrote? I said I’m not convinced, and will wait to see if there’s any evidence. That’s the exact opposite of what you claim I wrote. DS

          DS:
I was responding to the post above by “an honest question”.

I wasn’t commenting on your excellent article.

ebayer on April 7, 2010 at 2:50 pm

They have not been found guilty in my eyes; they’ve simply been indicted.

All I am saying is that when you (or Debbie) say that the only difference between this guy and the Hutaree folks is that this guy is Muslim and the Hutaree are Christian, that is not accurate. The relevant difference between the two groups is that one has been accused of (and indicted for) plotting to kill law enforcement officials.

To the extent my original post makes it look like I think they’re guilty, I apologize – I will see how things play out in the legal system before assuming these guys are guilty (or innocent).

an honest question on April 7, 2010 at 3:28 pm

I don’t see what the controversy is Debbie, If you can post proof where Savino or members of his Militia made threats to kill a police officer so they can show up at his funeral to murder even more police officers them maybe you might have something. No I think that what we have here is a guy who happens to be Muslim and Debbie is working the angle. I’m no fan of Militia’s but unless Debbie can post hard evidence to back up her claims (which she hasn’t) then this gets filed into the “Nothing to see here” category. I would bet my house that if this guy was Mennonite or Mormon this would have never hit her radar.

Jedi3129 on April 7, 2010 at 12:34 pm

With the President’s new “take a Muslim home to lunch” or “build a Muslim school program,” similar outreach programs can include the Militias so we can all Hummm together. Wouldn’t that be nice?

Friends of Truth on April 7, 2010 at 1:05 pm

Hey Debbie, why don’t you come to the SE Michigan Volunteer Militia’s Tea Party this Saturday, April 10? It’s at the Island Lake Recreation Area near Brighton, MI. Get more info at http://www.michiganmilitia.com. You could even get to meet Matt Savino in person, instead of just libeling him on your blog!

I am a militia member, and I am dismayed at how many folks seriously have the wrong impression about us. Folks need to come out and meet us. Although, I guess some folks are scared that we actually do try to uphold the US Constitution!

Rusty W on April 7, 2010 at 1:12 pm

    How was Savino Libeled?
By saying he was the commander of the Lenawee Volunteer Michigan Militia?

By saying his group had occasional contacts with the Hutaree militia?

By saying his group spends about half its time on survival and self-reliance training, such as making bows and arrows in the woods or learning how to set snares for small game or purify water.?

By saying that Savino himself is a Muslim, having converted from Lutheranism in 1998, he said.?

ebayer on April 7, 2010 at 1:23 pm

He was libeled by saying “There is no difference between Savino and the Hutarees.”

There is a difference. One group has been accused of (and indicted for) plotting to kill law enforcement officials. the other has not.

an honest question on April 7, 2010 at 2:04 pm

        From dishonest “honest question”:

“There is a difference. One group has been accused of (and indicted for) plotting to kill law enforcement officials. the other has not.”

Duh. The issue is whether the REASON that one group has not been accused relates to its Muslim members.

I have not had time to look into this. I’m glad you did D.S.
I have some real suspicions. When they used the word cult without elaborating what made them such… that was when the alarm bells went off. Anyone can be a cult. I could be wrong… but defaming the suspects and denying bail just seemed to me like there is a cover up here. and I have a hunch that you are 100% right that our government is suspicious of Christians and Jews… and is trying to help out the Jihad.

I’m speaking from the gut… cuz I don’t know a thing about this case. I do know people from rural Michigan and I noticed some bizarre politics as well going on there.

I agree completely. And where are the FBI when the Crips, Bloods, MS13, and innumerable other gangs are plotting and actually killing both police and federal agents. It appears when the FBI and ATF swoops in with a hundred agents to kill a man’s eleven year old son and wife over a sawed off shotgun at Ruby Ridge or wipe out men, women and children at Waco over nothing, that’s considered good police work. Hutaree was easy pickings for them, unlike the much more dangerous, well documented Muslim underground militias you point out or the numerous cop killing gangs terrorizing our cities.

The FBI should do something more constructive than going after these week-end warrior wannabees. The FBI should send thousands of agents to our southern border to help stop the illegal alien invasion of our country, as well as going after these POS mexicans that are bringing their terror and drug war into America. Maybe the FBI can even manage to catch some muslim terrorists along the border (yeah, right).

Jarhead on April 7, 2010 at 3:55 pm

No matter if these Hutaree are guilty or not, from the looks of them and their living conditions, they were born to lose.

Jedi3129 on April 7, 2010 at 4:00 pm

When the smoke clears I’ll bet you that the person making the threats to kill police were undercover agents.

It’s standard procedure for these undercover types to infiltrate harmless groups like this. Then set them up with illegal firearms or try to talk them into doing something illegal.
They probably have them on tape discussing an operation dreamed up by the undercover agent.

As a former militia member, it was well known that anybody that started talking crazy shit was in all likelihood an undercover FBI or BATF. Those people were immediately kicked out or shunned. A small unorganized group like the one just raided was the perfect size group to infiltrate.

A larger group would have seen the threat from a mile away and kicked the crazy guy or undercover agent out right away.

SMG45ACP on April 7, 2010 at 4:09 pm

It is an attempt to change the narrative. Rather than having to explain Somalis going off to engage in Jihad in Somalia or a Major Hasan wiring funds to Pakistan, we have some idiots living in an impoverished fantasy world as the main story now. “See, there are other groups aside from Islamic ones engaged in terrorism and…….” Janet Napolitano telegraphed last year that she would be seeking out such militia groups, as well as anti-immigrant and abortion groups, as dangers equivalent to Islamist terrorists. Even though in terms of danger, the non-Muslim groups are really just a bee sting in comparative terms.

sorrow01 on April 7, 2010 at 4:20 pm

I would love to see the date of when it was decided to infiltrate this group and compare it to when Napolitano released the DHS report “Rightwing Extremism: current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment”.
See,she needed to find a group to prove her point and show everyone that she was right.

Since Napolitano made her apparent disdain for the American public at large publicly known, we have had several terrorist attacks and attempted terrorist attacks on American soil. The Ft. Hood massacre, the Christmas Day attempted bombing (aka the Underwear Bomber) and an alleged attempt to poison the food supply at Ft. Jackson that is still under investigation and not being reported on, just to name a few.

When Jane Napolitano spoke at the National Governors Association’s Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. this past February (2010), she reiterated that domestic extremists are more dangerous than international terrorists. She says ‘drilling down’ on ‘domestic terrorist’ is her top concern.

Karl was all about destroying Christianity and the West, it’s all about testing the fringes first.

Marxist Legacy on April 7, 2010 at 7:53 pm

What exactly constitutes a militia? I am a member of several precision target shooting clubs. In one club I participate in a monthly NRA sanctioned match (NRA High Power) using so-called “assault rifles.” The US Army Marksmanship Unit competes in this match, and there is a national event every year open to military and civilians (who are encouraged to participate).

Are my clubs militias? Granted, I think we all know a militia when we see one, but how does the government define it?

Jewish Marksman on April 7, 2010 at 8:47 pm

I love that they asked for “Public Defenders” (and they thought they could bring down our government), undercover FBI agent, sweet. Since their inception the Teaparty crowd (not a movement since they do have the numbers or clout) because they are haters not debaters or as others have dubbed them screamers not dreamers. The simpleton Tea baggers are the same whiners that were crying when the McCain/Bailin ticket lost. Now that their yelling and screaming failed to stop the health care debate and the bill from passing they are crying again. Lets face it the Republicans had eight years to deal with health care, immigration, climate change and financial oversight and governance and they failed. The Republicans are good at starting wars (two in eight years, with fat contracts to friends of Cheney/Bush) but not at winning wars as seen by the continuing line of body bags that keep coming home. Instead of participating in the health care debate of ideas the Republicans party turned inward to your old fashion obstructionist party. In my opinion the Republican Waterloo loss was caused by the party allowing a small portions (but very loud) of the republican party of “birthers, baggers and blowhards” to take over their party. I will admit that this fringe is very good at playing “Follow the Leader” by listening to their dullard leaders, Beck, Hedgecock, Hannity, O’Reilly, Rush, Savage, Sarah Bailin, Orly Taitz, Victoria Jackson, Michele Bachmann and the rest of the Blowhards and acting as ill programmed robots. The Teaparty crowd think they can scare, intimidate and force others to go along with them by comments like “This time we came unarmed”, let me tell you something not all ex-military join the fringe militia crazies who don’t pay taxes and run around with face paint in the parks playing commando, the majority are mature and understand that the world is more complicated and grey than the black and white that these simpleton make it out to be and that my friend is the point. The world is complicated and presidents like Hamiliton, Lincoln, and Roosevelt believe that we should use government a little to increase social mobility, now its about dancing around the claim of government is the problem. The sainted Reagan passed the biggest tax increase in American history and as a result federal employment increased, but facts are lost when mired in mysticism and superstition. Although some Republicans are trying to distant themselves from this fringe most of them, having no game plan/ vision for our country, are just going along and fanning the flames. For a party that gave us Abraham Lincoln, it is tragic that the ranks are filled with too many empty suits. But they now claim they have changed, come on, what sucker is going to believe that? All I can say to you is remember Waterloo.

Why is it that Schlussel-type Neocons LOVE the “Law and Order” hammer until it’s applied to radical conservatives?
If the riot police were called in to bang some heads at the Hash Bash, conservatives would praise the police.
When a cop gets busted on videotape for using excessive force against a black or an “illegal,” conservatives complain that the liberals don’t let the cops do their job to keep us safe.

But when some freaking loony-tune Christian extremist, government-hating, tax-hating, moronic good-old boys from the sticks plot to kill a smalltown cop and then kill hundreds more at the funeral … whoa… let’s withold judgment.

I know a lot of people in Lenawee County. Many wonder if these were just a bunch of GI Joe wanna be rubes who let their fantasy get a little carried away.

Would I put it past the Obama justice department to bust up a militia with the idea that it might chill some of the violent right wing rhetoric? Nope. I wouldn’t put it past them to help manufacture such a scenario.

One way or the other, these Hutaree folks were might have been just stupid enough to actually attempt such a despicable plot.

Debbie, you missed a great picnic/Tea Party put on by the Michigan Militia type folks on April 10. Heck, we even had Kosher hot dogs for you!

To French Kiss: I’m sorry you are so scared of guns and people who like them. Maybe someday you’ll come to your senses and learn that law-abiding gun owners are not a threat to you–unless, of course, you are planning on trying to commit a crime against such.

To those who paint everyone different than yourselves with a broad brush (like those who smear “militias” in general and Matt Savino in particular: Y’all really should realize that any time you try to make an argument such as “all” or “most” of “some group” then you know that argument is weak. You need to judge individual people by their individual actions. It’s funny that none of the rest of us militia folks who train with Mr. Savino feel threatened by him, nor do we feel threatened by his non-Muslim relatives who also train with us. If WE who know him aren’t “scared” of him, then why are those who DON’T know him afraid of him? Are y’all also scared of the Bogeyman and the Big Bad Wolf? Do y’all wet your pants whenever you hear a loud noise like a firecracker or a car backfire? Jeez, get a life already!

Not to mention that anyone who really wants to find out for themselves should come on out to militia meetings and training exercises. There were numerous media types at our Field Day on April 10, and I believe we changed a few folks attitudes about us. We’re not all about guns. We’re about being prepared for all sorts of disasters and misfortunes that may occur. Of course, we’re the sort who will help rescue folks if a disaster occurs, whereas those who rip the militia are no doubt the folks who will sit on the backsides and complain that it took the “government” too long to rescue them!

So according to the great muslim hunter, Debbie S, this guy should be arrested because he’s a muslim? What did he actually do wrong, other than be a muslim? I don’t see any crime he was accused of, or any evidence that he was plotting any crime. I’ve had emails from the Michigan Militia’s leadership and they are a joke. They don’t have the teeth to do what needs to be do in combat or military training as I have had such as Navy Seal’s and Special Forces. When they were asked has anyone in the group had that type of training they told me that, that is not what a militia is about.

The militia doesn’t discriminate,” Savino said. “We don’t get into the whole religion thing. I do, Islam is my enemy.

I have also been in contact with other individuals who have spend time in the Michigan Militia and they told me that there is a lot of infighting and if you disagree with Savino or any of the leadership they kick you out.
