Hmmm . . . Why Wasn’t This Michigan Militia Raided By the FBI?
As George Orwell might have written, all of the citizen militias in the barnyard are equal, but some are more equal than others.
When the FBI recently raided and rounded up members of the Hutaree militia in Michigan and Ohio, I said to myself, “Well, if they were Muslim (and not Black), they’d have been safe to carry on.” In fact, we’ve seen no evidence whatsoever that, as federal prosecutors claim, the Hutaree members were about to kill anyone, police or otherwise, so I’ll reserve judgment until–and if–I see it. For now, I find the violent, anti-American rhetoric in local mosques–who also train with guns and in the martial arts in rural Michigan–far more threatening and of immediate danger.

And, apparently, my view about the religion of the Hutarees–they are Christian, not Muslim–has been confirmed as a reason for them being targeted. You see, there’s another militia in Michigan, which trains the same way and does the same things. And whaddya know? They weren’t raided, weren’t arrested, weren’t indicted, and aren’t now sitting rotting in jail without bond. And that’s even though the particular militia is based in Michigan’s Lenawee County (where several Hutaree members are based) and its leader is friends with some of the arrested Hutarees.

Well, the religion of their leader seems to be a pretty good reason why:
Since nine members of the Hutaree militia, including five people from Lenawee County, were arrested for plotting to kill law enforcement officials, members of another local militia have sought to emphasize their difference from those arrested. . . .
Matt Savino [is] commander of the Lenawee Volunteer Michigan Militia, a brigade of a larger group called the Michigan Militia Corps Wolverines. . . .
In fact, members of his group were prepared to help in a sting operation to arrest the final Hutaree member on the run, Savino said.
Savino said his group had occasional contacts with the Hutaree militia. . . .
Savino also said his group spends about half its time on survival and self-reliance training, such as making bows and arrows in the woods or learning how to set snares for small game or purify water. They also are participating in the adopt-a-highway program for a stretch of U.S. 223 west of Blissfield to help keep the highway clean, Savino said.
Big deal. The Klan participates in adopt-a-highway, too. That’s not the key part. Here’s the money quote:
The group’s Web site declares that it is open to people of all races, cultures and beliefs, and that it encourages involvement in the political process but leaves individual political decisions up to its members. Savino himself is a Muslim, having converted from Lutheranism in 1998, he said.
“The militia doesn’t discriminate,” Savino said. “We don’t get into the whole religion thing.”
He and his brother started the Lenawee Volunteer Michigan Militia in 2006, Savino said. The group has about 10 members who attend training and other events regularly, and five more who attend sporadically, Savino said.
Muslim Militia Leader Matt Savino Trains for War
As one reader from Lenawee County writes:
The leader of this Michigan militia is a Muslim, that is scary.
“The militia doesn’t discriminate,” Savino said. “We don’t get into the whole religion thing.”
Yeah right. I do hope the FBI is watching them.
More like breaking pita with them. . . and watching the butt they’re kissing.
Now, if they were Christian . . . .
For now, the federal case against the Hutarees seems to be nothing more than religious discrimination. There is no difference between Savino and the Hutarees . . . but for the “M” word. And it doesn’t stand for “Militia” or “Michigan.”

Or, perhaps the Feds didn’t arrest Savino and his militia because they were not plotting to kill law enforcement officials, and then to attack the funerals of those law enforcement officials?
