Fine Whine of the Week: Star of Biggest 2009 Movies Cries “Racism”
Yet another Black actress is crying “racism” against Hollywood. While I’m no defender of Hollywood, the cries of racism are growing a little tired, especially when this actress got major roles in last year’s two biggest movies . . . because she’s Black.
Zoe Saldana: Successful Actress Cries Hollywood “Racism”
Actress Zoe Saldana was cast in major roles in both “Avatar” (read my review)–last year’s biggest movie and the biggest of all time in terms of box office total–and “Star Trek” (read my review), the remake starring Chris Pine. These are both movies in which any White actress/waitress would die to get a role as an extra. And she had major roles in both, but yet still cries racism in the April 2010 issue of Glamour Magazine (on the cover of which she’d likely never appear . . . if she wasn’t Black).
Ethnic is a word that doesn’t exist in my vocabulary. In Hollywood, you hear things like, “Oh, they loved you but they want to go more traditional.” That’s the new N word.
Her whining reminds me of Will Smith–the #1 movie star in America–declaring on Oprah in 2008, that America is racist and “rejects” Blacks, just days after a Black President was elected in the U.S.
And let’s be intellectually honest. Saldana got at least one of these roles BECAUSE–not despite–the fact that she’s Black. If there wasn’t a Black female character named “Uhura” in the Star Trek series, they could have cast a White blonde chick as the sole primary female staffer aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise. And, regardless of what was in the original series, they still could have done this and cast a White chick. But, instead, Hollywood employed racism and cast the Uhura character only from a pool of Black actresses. Yes, she got the job because she’s Black. The racism worked in her favor.
You could argue that her race is the same reason she was cast as the female Na’vi love interest in “Avatar.” Yes, her character was computer-generated. But she was playing a race that is treated badly by White Americans. And I believe that’s why she was cast in the role. If it’s not the reason, then it disproves her point even further because she was cast to play the role and racism didn’t keep her from it.
And, finally, there’s her claim that she’s not cast because she “looks Black” and casting directors tell her they want to “go more traditional.” Look at the pic of Saldana. She looks more like a “traditional” White woman than a “traditional Black woman. Only her father is Black. Her mother is Puerto Rican. She’s light-skinned and has either had work done or wasn’t born with what we normally consider “African” features. Her nose looks like the “traditional” nose of a White person. She wears extensions, which she usually straightens . . . to look like a “traditional” White woman. And she even did plastic surgery on her name to sound more White. Her real name is Zoe Yadira Zaldaña Nazario. And that’s not to mention her boyfriend, Keith Britton, who is not only a very pale White, but also very blond.
Hypocritette & The “New N-Word”: Zoe Saldana’s “More Traditional” Dating Pool
Hmmm . . . if anyone in Hollywood is racist–other than the casting directors who made her a star BECAUSE she’s Black–it’s Zoe Saldana, herself . . . against her own race. She’s definitely taken the actions of a self-hater.
Ms. Saldana would be best advised to stop whining about alleged “racism” when she’s more successful than 99% of White actresses in Hollywood, tens of thousands of whom are stuck walking dogs and waiting tables.
In short, shut up and act.
