Skip Peet’s Coffee, Go to Starbucks: Which Stores Support Gun Control?

By Debbie Schlussel

There’s a new battlefield in the war to defend the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.  And it’s at the stores in which you shop.

nogunsallowed

calipizzakitchpeetscoffee

Gun control advocates from the Brady Campaign are targeting stores and businesses that abide by state open carry laws.  They’re waging war against stores that allow patrons to carry their weapons in states in which the law allows that.  And they’re giving businesses “no weapons” signs to post.

But, thankfully, most large, national businesses are smarter than that.  And it’s not about ideology.  It’s about the bottom line.  If you don’t allow people to carry guns who are licensed or otherwise legally allowed to do so under the law, you’re angering a lot of potential and longtime customers.  And, especially in this economy, most businesses can’t afford to be left-wing Big Brother.  Unfortunately, “most businesses” don’t include Peet’s Coffee and Tea and California Pizza Kitchen, which won’t allow guns in their stores.  These businesses DO respect the Second Amendment and allow guns in states where its legal:  Starbucks, Wal-Mart,  Home Depot, Best Buy, and Barnes & Noble.

I applaud these businesses for doing so, even if it’s a marketing decision.  After all, there are plenty of lefties who won’t shop these places and will go to places like Peet’s instead.  It’s sad that the gun control people have chosen to wage this kind of war.  Do they really believe that criminals illegally carrying guns are going to obey the Peet’s policy of no guns?  And would you want to patronize a place that not only doesn’t respect #2 on the Bill of Rights, but where you are possibly unsafe and definitely unable to defend yourself against malefactors with guns?  But ya know who isn’t applauding Starbucks’ decision to allow guns?  Its workers union.  Figures.

More:

Starbucks Corp. and some other chain stores in the U.S. are finding themselves caught in the middle of a firearms debate, as gun-control advocates go up against a burgeoning campaign by gun owners to carry holstered pistols in public places.

The “open carry” movement, in which gun owners carry unconcealed handguns as they go about their everyday business, is loosely organized around the country but has been gaining traction in recent months. Gun-control advocates have been pushing to quash the movement, including by petitioning the Starbucks coffee chain to ban guns on its premises.

Businesses have the final say on their property. But the ones that don’t opt to ban guns—such as Starbucks—have become parade grounds of sorts for open-carry advocates.

Starbucks on Wednesday, while bemoaning being thrust into the debate, defended its long-standing policy of complying with state open-carry weapons laws, in part by stating that its baristas, or “partners,” could be harmed if the stores were to ban guns. The chain said that in the 43 states where open carry is legal, it has about 4,970 company-operated stores.

The company added: “The political, policy and legal debates around these issues belong in the legislatures and courts, not in our stores.” . . .

Some chains have banned guns from their restaurants, even in open-carry states, because of the impact it could have on non-gun-carrying customers.

“We are concerned that the open display of firearms would be particularly disturbing to children and their parents,” said a spokesperson for the California Pizza Kitchen restaurant chain.

Hmmm . . . I’d bet it would be even more “particularly disturbing to children and their parents” to be held hostage by a criminal with a gun and unable to get away because no law abiding citizens with guns were allowed in.

A Peet’s Coffee & Tea spokesperson said that while the firm “respects and values all individuals’ rights…our policy is not to allow customers carrying firearms in our stores or on our outdoor seating premises unless they are uniformed or identified law enforcement officers.” . . .

Indeed, not all baristas agree that the Starbucks policy protects them. “I think the policy shows complete disregard for the safety and sentiments of their workers. The only thing worse than a yuppie upset with how their frappuccino turned out is a yuppie with a gun who’s unhappy with how their frappuccino turned out,” says Erik Forman, a Starbucks barista and union member in Minneapolis.

The IWW Starbucks Workers Union on Wednesday issued a statement, saying “We appreciate the vigorous debate taking place by principled individuals on both sides of this issue. However, to date we are not aware of any efforts by Starbucks to widely engage its workers who are directly affected by open-carry gun laws. We believe an appropriate solution cannot be reached without doing so.”

Um, Erik, the only thing worse than someone upset about his/her coffee, is an innocent customer who is shot by a criminal upset about his/her coffee or seeking to rob the place . . . because customers weren’t allowed to carry guns into the store and were unable to protect themselves, dying needlessly.

Yes! Yes! Yes! We The People must absolutely have the freedom to kill each other in any and all places. Lest we forget, those ‘Murkins that dare to bring their squealing spawn to annoy customers in public places could use a dose of good ol’ ‘Murkin gun totin discipline!

After all in a nation who claims “In God We Trust” it’s only guns we trust ’cause the guy in the sky’s “taketh” duties aren’t killing fast enough

Maybe if my wife’s Uncle had a CCL he could have stopped the three punks that stomped him to death for not dimming his lights. I have always owed guns. My wife and daughters are proficient with handguns, semi-suto and shotguns. We take our rights seriously. They learned at an early age what guns are for. If you do happen do get into a situation where your life depends on defending yourself with a firearm well, just shout out for a Merikun.

Roper on March 8, 2010 at 1:00 am

The fact is that there are about 10 to 15 thousand illegal gun regulations on the books now. Where in the Constitution does it say you have to get a concealed carry permit in order to carry a firearm legally?

If gun owners had sued in the courts when the left started passing these illegal regulations we would not be having this debate. What part of “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” do these morons not understand?

ScottyDog on March 4, 2010 at 1:27 pm

    ScottyDog,

You are right, we need to flood the courts with lawyers that will enforce the 2ND Amendment.

Did you actually read what you wrote here on this forum.

Janet please get some fresh air! All members of my family are trained and legally licensed to carry concealed firearms, and we do! Better to have a firearm and not need it than to need a firearm and not have it!

People like Janet are a mystery to me. I’d be willing to bet she’s against the Patriot Act. I’m confident she was believes terrorists should be tried in criminal court with all the rights a US citizen would enjoy in such a scenario.

Why do so many people who hold every last hyphen and comma in the First and Fourth Amendments to be sacrosanct seem to believe the Founding Fathers were only joking when they wrote the Second and Tenth?

Islam Delenda Est on March 4, 2010 at 1:51 pm

Janet,

You need to stay away from Peet’s. The caffeine awareness groups meet at Starbucks every Tuesday at 19:00hrs.

M: Scamela and Slobbert? Who cares? The only thing you need to know about her is that her money comes from a car loan scam using Muslim straw buyers, which resulted in the execution of the only honest person working for her (who was tipping off police) and the killing of a cop. And he supports that she was involved with this. These two are hypocrites, who had no prob inviting to their self-promotion fest a mother who helped honor-kill her two daughters. The question is why are you still reading those regurgitating frauds? DS

There’s only one type of gun control I agree with. Make sure you grip your weapon with two hands to get a nice tight grouping.

Jarhead on March 4, 2010 at 2:49 pm

    Jarhead,

Your so right, we don’t need law enforcement officers, I know I’m a reservest for the city I reside in. If the community enforced “moral” laws and kept each other in check there would be no need for a corrupt leagle system of it’s keepers. I say this openly to the officers whom I work with, and yes it makes them not so happy but the truth hurts. I have 26 years of law enforcment under my belt while serving in the Army & the not so happy officers will not say shit to my face nor do the city councle eather. My comment to them is are you a dept collector of a law enforcment officer to the people. I serve the people & allways respect there rights acording to the constitution.

Steve on March 7, 2010 at 10:04 am

Peet’s Coffee is far superior to Starbucks’. Too bad they don’t want to accommodate their carrying customers. And even though California is not an open-carry state, the 2nd amendment trumps the “right to caffeine” so I’ll support those that carry in other states.

ColeslawPatriot on March 4, 2010 at 2:54 pm

Janet, are you sure you are not one of Janet Napolitano’s lovers?! ARE YOU THAT SICK AND DEMENTED?!?!

Now I myself am not a fan of Starbucks (my fave coffee is Dunkin Donuts), but the other places that do allow the guns where legal, I visit most of those places like Barnes and Noble and Best Buy. By the way, the B&N at the Stamford Town Center…LOVE GOING THERE!

As for this…

I actually think she would SUPPORT the Patriot Act, which VIOLATES NEARLY EVERYTHING IN THE CONSTITUTION. This act came as a result of staged terror attacks, meant to take away our liberties and rights.

Petsmart has a big sign that no guns are allowed. This has been there for several years. On the other hand they do allow people to bring in their dogs, which could bite another customer.

Rail Fan on March 4, 2010 at 6:55 pm

Janet is protecting her right to be shot without resistance.

Take a look at Burma where the police have all the guns.
http://player.sbs.com.au/programs#/programs_08/fullepisodes/latestepisodes/playlist/Burma-Vj-Reporting-From-A-Closed-Country-Full-Ep/

In Australia we don’t have rights to carry arms, or mace, or knives or pepper sprays, or fly spray or even a flashlight that is too heavy. They have banned glasses in pubs because drunks break and use them as weapons to cut peoples throats.

The police advises that if you are being raped – don’t resist, don’t fight back, don’t even scream because that may make the rapist more angry – cooperate and wait until he is finished.

They charged a female armaguard security guard (Karen Brown) because she shot a man who beat her over the head and was heading off with the loot.

If this sounds like utopia Janet you could come and live here.

Clavdivs on March 4, 2010 at 7:36 pm

When shooting goes down, the shooter gets tunnel vision, and I would not want to be in a store in which a man is firing his weapon, since i could just as easily be construed as a target since the peripheral vision strength is lessened.

Please, I have never had a robber come into a Costco or a Peet’s and have them rob the place and shoot everyone in it. The whole point of robbery is to get in and out, and if caught to not have that much punishment. Pulling a gun on a robber just makes it worse if they have one too.

T. Y. on March 4, 2010 at 11:26 pm

California is an open carry state-you just cannot open carry the gun loaded. If a cop stops and asks you then you have to let them check it out and verify it’s unloaded.

Pinandpuller on March 5, 2010 at 2:35 am

So, Mike-if you haven’t seen a robber going into any of those stores I guess you haven’t seen a law abiding gun owner pulling his or her gun out either-ergo you don’t have anything to worry about concerning people open carrying guns.

Pinandpuller on March 5, 2010 at 2:40 am

How do these businesses know if you are carrying a firearm anyway? Do they have metal detectors at the doors? So let’s outlaw carry laws so only the criminals have access to firearms. Smart. I wonder how Janet will feel about that? Idiot!

Musiccgirl on March 5, 2010 at 10:19 am

After the coffee house massacre of the 4 Lakewood police officers by Maurice Clemmons, you’d think there’d be more common sense. Short damn memoies on these libtards. Too much acid in the 70’s.

Joe on March 5, 2010 at 10:37 am

Thomas Jefferson once said; “Those who hammer their guns into plows will plow for those who do not.”

Clint Smith, Founder & Director of the Thunder Ranch firearms training facility, once offered the following gun-wise statements;

“Make your attacker advance through a wall of bullets. I may get killed with my own gun, but he’s gonna have to beat me to death with it, cause it’s going to be empty.”

“If you carry a gun, people will call you paranoid. That’s ridiculous. If I have a gun, what in the hell do I have to be paranoid about.”

“You can say ‘stop’ or ‘alto’ or use any other word you think will work but I’ve found that a large bore muzzle pointed at someone’s head is pretty much the universal language.”

“Nothing adds a little class to a sniper course like a babe in a Ghillie suit.”
(if you don’t know what a Ghillie suit is, look it up here – http://theghilliesuits.com/)

Other wise tidbits;

Never pick a fight with an old man. If he’s too old to fight, he’ll just shoot you.

If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.

When seconds count, the cops are just minutes away.

A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him ‘Why do you carry a 45?’ The Ranger responded, ‘Because they don’t make a 46.’

Rocky on March 5, 2010 at 10:47 am

Seems Janet must be one of those embarrassing educated Americans who reads things like the recent report published by our nation’s police officers which stated that 1-percent of shootings in any given year are done so in self defense.

So much Kafka, so little time!

Ellis on March 5, 2010 at 12:01 pm

I just left a Starbucks where some homeless was told to leave. Well the guy is a pigeon. You feed these pigeons and they keep coming back. Dude is asking for money in line. So the employees tell him to leave and cant get him to leave because they are effeminate boys and who have no masculinity to force this man out the door. This is the state of affairs that liberalism has this nation into.
I suspect in a couple months Starbucks will change their policy and the guns will be banned as well.
As for coffee the best is Dutch Brothers Coffee up in Oregon. Those drive through are the best and every barista chick is smoking hot.

CaliforniaScreaming on March 5, 2010 at 12:04 pm

One great way to deal with the beggers, if they become bothersome, is to take a handful of pennies(because they will always get down and pick up the change) and throw them as hard as you can. One must be careful not to throw out your arm doing this because you may have to defend yourself against a crazed and injured scum bag. A friend did this by a book store in Taylor. I had a large young, strapping criminal type walk up to me in a Wal Mart parking lot in Lancaster California about 17 yrs ago. He gets right in my space and says, “YOU GOT A DOLLAR, MAN?!” I replied, “Yeah, I have a whole wallet full man, how ’bout that?!” Confrontation is sometime the best method I’ve found. The cops call what he did, aggressive pan handling.

Joe on March 6, 2010 at 11:11 am

Do the stores that are anti american also prevent police from entering with weapons on them? No? I did not think so. Goes to show who is in favor of a police state and who in favor of a free state

martin fee on March 5, 2010 at 12:06 pm

People who think “guns kill people” are missing the point. If someone wanted to rob a person they would do it regardless of what kind of weapon they had at that point. Bad people will always figure out a way to carry out their plot with what ever resources are around. Look at the prisons, inmates don’t have guns; they figured out how to make knives out of paper and plastic. So by the reasoning of the Brady bunch and our beloved commie Janet, prisons and jails are much safer because the inmates don’t have guns. And it just figures that the coffee serving union members would have a problem with open carry laws: they are in reality brainwashed by their communist principles.

max on March 5, 2010 at 2:46 pm

Mike spewed the following crap:

“The whole point of robbery is to get in and out, and if caught to not have that much punishment. Pulling a gun on a robber just makes it worse if they have one too.”

I guess you do not read the news. Most robbers kill the store managers now so there are no witnesses in court to testify against them. This includes 7 Eleven clerks getting robbed of $20.00 bucks.

Your contention about tunnel vision is utter nonsense too BTW If a shooter had tunnel vision they would not be pointing their gun at any perepheral target in the sight pattern.

You obviously have no experience with firearms or common sense.

ScottyDog on March 5, 2010 at 3:11 pm

I find it just a little odd that Starbucks will alow me to carry my gun in the store, but won’t support the war or our troops, or berhaps they have changed that policy.

marlyn johnson on March 5, 2010 at 5:13 pm

In Michigan, no business, city, county, etc can ban handguns carried by licensed CCW persons. If they try it, sue them. The only place where handguns are banned are labeled on the back of the CCW license (schools, churches, stadiums, hospitals, etc).

Truth on March 6, 2010 at 9:24 am

in Georgia the TGI Fridays put up one of those dumba$$ no guns signs , I complained to corporate and the manager at the front , he said he did not think that anyone was paying attention to it we no longer eat there , … does any liberal dummy think for one second that they are doing anything but pressing there liberal anti-gun agenda into the real world

Robert on June 24, 2010 at 2:25 pm

The 2nd amendment does not apply to private property. A business has every right to refuse service to people that are carrying a weapon legal or otherwise. Ever read a sign, right to refuse service to anyone? Private property is private property. Do you want me to come into your house and tell you what to do? No – I didn’t think so. If I were a guest in your house, I would respect your rules even if I did not agree with them. Peet’s makes a great cup of coffee and CPC makes a yummy pizza. I’ll respect their rights as a private business to enjoy their great products. Will you all be adult enough to do the same?

David on August 19, 2010 at 1:54 am

Just a note: in the 60’s it was Ronald Reagan himself, as Gov of California, who pushed through gun-control laws. Why? Because he had a group of Black Panthers walk through his picture opportunity with some children. The Panthers were armed to the teeth, and (correctly) pointed out they had the right to be armed. The Black Panthers scared the hell out of many people. California quickly passed gun-control laws to control the Black Panthers. With all our problems in America, I still think we are way ahead of Europe, where London police couldn’t stop the rioters, even when innocents were being beaten.
