Do You Agree?: “Ten Days That Shaped America”

By
Last night, the History Channel debuted its “10 Days that Unexpectedly Changed America.”
Not among them: 9/11 and the attack on Pearl Harbor. Or the invention of the computer. But what is among them is even more startling: Sept. 9, 1956–the date of Elvis Presley’s debut on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Huh?

Here are the rest of “The Ten” (do you agree with these choices?):
* Sept. 17, 1862: Antietam
* May 26, 1637: Massacre at Mystic
* July 16, 1939: Einstein’s Letter
* Sept. 6, 1901: McKinley’s Assassination
[DS: Did this really change America? What about Lincoln’s assassination? Or even, Alexander Hamilton’s?]
* Jan. 24, 1848: California Gold Rush
[DS: Agree with this in the larger context of Manifest Destiny.]
* July 21, 1925: Scopes Trial
* July 6, 1892: Homestead Strike
* June 21, 1964: Freedom Summer
* Jan. 25, 1787: Shays’ Rebellion

I guess if you don’t look at this as a top ten list, then I sort of see how they could consider all of these days as changing America. But, yeah, there are way more important events that changed America. These might be in the top 50 somewhere, but they are nowhere near the top ten.

About what you would expect from a bunch of PC historians. However, the McKinley bit is interesting, since he was much more popular than either Lincoln or Kennedy.
Also the Scopes trial was not as big of an event at the time, as they make it out to be these days.

I didn’t see the documentary,but on behalf of my beloved uncle,who was in the
vicinity of Philadelphia,Mississippi on June 21,1964 when civil rights workers James Chaney,Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman were murdered by The KKK,I got a spot somewhere for
‘Freedom Summer’-not for the “civil rights
movement” led by the Farrakhan,Sharpton and Jesse Jackson crowd that replaced it.

Finally…the sheets come out…LOL
That “Freedom Summer” led to those pesky Nigroes getting the vote, thank GOD ‘they’ won’t be voting in New Orleans this time around–Vanilla City rocks.
Elvis SHOULD be a major event…the first wigger in history (that’s if you don’t count Benny Goodman and Al Jolson and damn near EVERY SENSIBLE white musician in the history of this country…white volk just somehow seem to miss that rhythm) but i guess y’all think it a bleak day that whitebread Amerikkka embraced that Nigro music.
Somehow the GENOCIDE and IMPERIALISM behind the “Manifest” Destiny seems to have escaped you. Imagine IF Palestine was capable of a “manifest” destiny…..

It’s fine to include Antietam on the list. President Lincoln had been holding the Emancipation Proclamation in abeyance since July, and Antietam finally gave him the opening he needed. In addition, if memory serves, more Americans were killed on September 17, 1862 than on any other day in American history. Finally, while Gettysburg was the high tide of the Confederacy, it was Antietam that really ended any talk of the British and French recognizing the Confederacy, which was the South’s only real chance at victory.

So, Elvis is to blame for rap? I knew it.
Nothing of this has escape my attention, Eminem’s Revenge. You’ve converted me. Amerikkkkkka is the most evil, vile nation in history times 10. When are we moving since we don’t want to live in and support such an awful country? I know there are vast countries in the world that are paradises compared to Amerikkkkkkkkkkkka.
I have my bags packed, Eminem’s Revenge. Let’s go find the New Eden. When do we leave vile Amerikkkkkkkkkkkklan? You and me should not be forced to live on this soil a day longer.

I do not know why they listed an event that happened 139 years before America declared its independence. The History Channel is becoming increasingly P.C. and in league to Eric Foner like historians. How about Black Tuesday October 29, 1939 the date the stock market crashed which signalled the Great Depression?

I think the “10” list stinks. Here’s a few…
November 10, 1775 Founding of Marine Corps.
Ratification of the U.S. Constitution in 1789
June 1976, Jimma Carter signs into law “Public Law 94-311″ mandating any, and all, persons whose native homeland language is Spanish” was given official “Minority” status, that is to say, anyone from any country settled officially by Spain…Mexico, Puerto Rico, Phillipines, et al etc. (Sorry Brazil, call Portugal on this one.) E.g. “Officially” inventing the “Hispanic race”. …thanx Jimma.
ALL of 1979… Our first dealings with Radical Mainstream Islam…P.S. Thanx again Jimma. P.P.S. “Hey Iran!” (Mickey’s middle finger tee shirts)
October 3, 1993 “Delta” operators, U.S. Rangers, USAF S.O.A.R. pilots in Mogadishu “Blackhawk Down”. Thanks Billary for “feeling” our pain.
September 30, 1997…the U.S. Senate votes to give over 500,000 Illegal Aliens Amnesty. (Deja vu?
October 2001…the day my first Detachment Operations Officer in 1997, Capt. Michael “Johnny” Spann U.S.M.C., was killed in Afghanistan. another gone, but not forgotten. Semper FI Sir!
…and a whole host of others that will not see the light of day again, unless we kick the “PC” crowd right in the balls!
Sick Boy!

I don’t know about the rest of the country but the last Amnesty in 1988 forever changed California. We have so many messed up aliens that they have flooded the rest of the country because they can’t stand the mess they created here either. Legalization buried this country in unskilled public charges who some fifteen years later still can’t say hello in English much less read and write.

I dispute the significance of Sharpsburg (Antietam) to the outcome of the “Civil War”:
1) Neither side achieved a decisive victory or suffered damage sufficient enough to turn the tide in favor of the Union or the Confederacy. In September 1862 the war was still in its early stages.
2) In the aftermath of the battle Lincoln merely publicized his intent to issue the Emancipation Proclamation on 1 Jan 63, thus providing the Confederates with an opportunity for more than 3 months to return to the Union with slavery intact. The fact that the South remained “in rebellion” meant that its primary goal was independence, not the preservation of slavery.
3) Moreover, the proclamation explicitly preserved slavery in several states and other areas in Union control.
4) The legal abolition of slavery did not occur until after the end of the war with the passage of the 13th Amendment.
Many other battles were far more significant to the outcome of the war, including Chickamauga/Chattanooga, Atlanta, Franklin, Winchester, and Petersburg, among others.
