Free Enterprise Story of the Day: Meet Ashley Qualls, 17-Year-Old Millionaire

By
Here’s a story for whining feminists who claim men have it better.
Meet Ashley Qualls. She’s everything that’s great about America and our free enterprise system.
Well, almost everything. Despite a 3.9 GPA, she dropped out of high school during sophomore year to concentrate on her business.

Ashley Qualls: Teen Millionaire is Success Because of Risk, Hard Work,

NOT Feminist Whining

But in Qualls’ rare case, her dropping out paid off. After an $8 dollar investment in a website domain name–WhateverLife.com–Qualls (of the Detroit area) now has a business that is bringing in millions and owns her own home (which she bought when she was 16). And she’s only 17. Her website is ranked #825 in traffic, out of the entire Internet.
The best part: It’s ahead of (and gets more traffic than) Oprah.com . . . and, sadly, my site, OprahSucks.com, too. Her site has brought in over a million dollars in ad revenue, and her mother and best friends are now on her payroll. She even got legally emancipated to be able to legally sign contacts on her own (without a parent). She’s been offered $5 million for her business, but refuses to sell just yet.
Qualls will be on annoying anti-male yenta-fest “The View” on Friday and is in New York meeting with top ad execs for advertising on her site. She gets 250,000 unique visitors a day.
So what does Qualls have on her website that makes it garner so much attention: She is a web designer who creates designs to decorate MySpace pages. And it’s all free. Very soon, she’ll introduce a line of screens and designs for cellphones. Qualls taught herself computer programming, code, and other language and is a self-described computer geek.
Why do I like this story? Two reasons:
1) Because it shows that in America, anything is possible. Anyone from any background–even a teen from a low-income, working class area (from which Qualls emanated)–can make it big through risk (though I don’t recommend dropping out of high school), talent, and hard work.
The free enterprise system and entrepreneurial spirit is part of what makes America great.
2) While feminists and academics continue to whine about a “high-tech gender gap in computer science”–the subject of a Monday Associated Press story–Ashley Qualls isn’t whining. She’s showing that there actually isn’t a gender gap at all for those who work at it instead of whine.

Its relieving to know that there are teenagers out there that do something productive with their lives besides cavorting around in revealing skimpy slut clothings behaving like crack whores or becoming a Hollywood idiot. Here is a girl who uses her talents and skills to get to where she is and deserves more media recognition for her credibility, not the perennial celebrity skanks with big voids in their lives. Miss Qualls is the epitome of America’s virtues, in contrast to Britney Spears,Paris Hilton and the rest of the whore-mongering deviants that the perversed media hold up as role models for pubescent girls who aspire to emulate their example of decadency on while thinking such behaviour is the norm among young women.

That is pretty impressive. It sounds like we have found the next Bill Gates and it is a young lady!

Dr. D on September 26, 2007 at 12:15 pm

She did it without affirmative action? Impossible!

Jose on September 26, 2007 at 2:01 pm

Next bill gates? I wouldn’t go that far.
But anyway, this is a really inspiring story and it shows that the light of the young mind of america hasn’t completely died out yet. So not all girls still hasn’t submitted to the psychoslut desease yet.
You know, it makes me wanna plan on starting my own anime dub company. I seem to be the only japanese anime fan in this place!! 🙁
But my concern with that girl is that if she goes on the view…the hosts might get her mind warped into that of a death buster. And that would be just the beginning. What do you think?

This is a nice story. I’m truly happy for this young lady.
However, let’s not go overboard here. She helps people decorate MySpace pages. This is a trivial use of her apparent smarts and skills. She’s hardly doing serious computer science. Yes, she’s making money. But lots of people make money in our society doing trivial things.
That’s part of the problem with America. We’ve lost site of the fundamentals (i.e., energy, manufacturing, construction, engineering, skilled trades, etc.). We have far too many people who make their living by producing fluff, which has absolutely no lasting value or useful purpose besides mere entertainment.
What this young lady does is fluff — no different than some extremely pretty girl from a working class background who makes it big as a model or actress.
This is nice, sure, but it is not what makes (made) America great.

You make great points…however, as the story said she is also gonna make designs for cell phones and such too. Now is that fluff too? I wouldn’t mind having a ravens or orioles or even an american flag skin on my cell phone!

Debbie, where do you find this stuff?? I just love you!
Good for Miss Qualls. It’s nice to know that there are a few members of the younger generation who’ve got it going on.

Republican Patriot, I see what you’re saying and you do raise some good points. I think what I take from this story is that this very young girl has demonstrated that she can take whatever skills she does have (you point out that from a technological standpoint, they are trivial) and has made the most of it. At the very least, she has an excellent business sense! That’s something, aside from the advanced computer knowledge which you say is lacking. This girl does not have managers and pimps pushing her in Hollywood, like Paris Hilton and Brittney Spears have. She did it all on her own. Furthermore, what this story says to me is that if this young girl, who has no education and no serious computer skills, can make such a successful business for herself, then why can’t educated computer saavy feminists do something 100 times better??

AmericanJewess on September 27, 2007 at 2:24 pm

Republican Patriot,
I couldn’t disagree with you more.
It IS capitalism and free markets that make this country great. If this girl lived almost anywhere else she would be relegated to the socioeconomic status of her birth. (Including other first world countries such as those in Europe).
In the US, this girl of little means found a niche and is using creativity and hard work to make her business a success.
It is elitist to think that you are the judge of whether what she is doing is valuable.
I’m sure you mean no harm, but it’s dangerous to criticize a hard working girl based on your prejudices. I also think that opportunity of this kind is going to be seriously limited if Hillary Clinton is elected and attempts her grand socialist/communist experiment. Then where will we be?

CarpeDiem on September 28, 2007 at 11:45 pm

Selling coffee, hamburgers and fries seems like fluff to me. But Starbucks and Wendy’s et al employ thousands and contribute to economic prosperity. Then there’s Google and eBay. Not particularly fundamental in the traditional sense.
The present is the information age. Service and information sectors are driving our economy. She is offering a service and creating value – neither are trivial.
Besides, she’s only 17. This is only her first venture. What were we doing at 17?

WillPower on September 29, 2007 at 12:48 am

Well, what more is there to say about fluff. I think this girl have done a job well done. Contributing her time and hard work on her site so ppl who dont have time to make this kinds of things will be able to use them. I am very proud of her. She’s an independent girl whose doing her thing. You go girl.

Korazon85 on December 8, 2009 at 2:17 pm

Republican Patriot(RP): I believe it has been a long time since you were 17 for you to criticize what Ashley does.

When you consider where she came from: lower middle class, father a machinist, parents divorced, to where she is now, her story can even inspire a 50-something like me. Ashley inspired me to buy a book on HTML. It’s very challenging,RP. Have you ever tried to learn it?

And Ashley taught HERSELF HTML when she was NINE years old!
I think that’s pretty awesome! And let’s remember, in 2012, she will turn 22! She has plenty of time and money to do “whatever” she wants to in the future, should this website loose visitors.

ROBERT DELROSSO on October 27, 2011 at 9:55 pm

As it turns out, she manipulated the code of her google adsense ad on her website.

Normally when you have a website with advertising banners, only a tiny, tiny minority of the visitors of your website will click on your advertisement banners. Ashley learned of a way to manipulate the code of the google adsense code so that her entire webpages were one big invisible advertisement banner. Oh, the google adsense ad was fully visible at the top of her Web pages, but if you clicked on anything else on her page: a link, a picture, it registered as a click through on the google adsense ad when you didnt click on it. Google was paying her for clicks on the google adsense ad. Not for visits to her webpage. So millions of hits on her site got translated into millions of click throughs on her google adsense ad. And she profited from this.

It took years for google to catch on. They were noticing millions of their dollars going out to owners of nothing websites. They put an end to it by changing their code, and their terms if service, and watching everyone more closely. This killed her income and her website.
