Vannity, O’Reilly Seething?: Glenn Beck 2nd Most Admired TV Personality

By Debbie Schlussel

I’d bet that Sean Vannity and Bill O’Reilly are privately seething over a much-publicized Harris Interactive poll that just came out.  They see Glenn Beck, whose FOX News show airs in daytime, nipping at their heels and getting, at times, higher ratings in daytime than they get in prime-time, a much higher volume day-part.  (For the record, I’m no fan of any of these three, including Beck, but I think the item is newsworthy, nonetheless.)

glennbeckseanhannitylaughing2

Drama Queen Act Beats Phony “Great American” BS

Asked who their favorite TV personality was,  2,276 respondents picked Glenn Beck at Number 2, just behind Oprah.  Bill O’Reilly barely placed in the Top Ten, at last place, and Sean Vannity . . . well, Sean who?  He didn’t even make the list.  And, again, he’s in prime-time, unlike Beck.  Moreover, in several categories, Beck was THE MOST admired television personality, including Conservatives, Republicans, Matures (64+) and two demographics that are not expected:  Midwesterners, and Independents.  Yup, he beat out Oprah in both of those.

But in the coveted younger age groups, there’s no Beck or any other conservative. Oprah dominates Gen-X and Baby Boomers, and Conan O’Brien is most admired by Echo Boomers (ages 18-32). Check out the complete details of the poll. Given that the survey was conducted between December 7 and 14, 2009, Charlie Sheen’s alleged violence against his wife and Jay Leno’s late-night machinations didn’t enter into consideration. Still, it, sadly, appears that David Letterman’s mass orgy with his female staff didn’t hurt him much in public opinion (and perhaps helped him).

As I’ve noted on this site before, Vannity is worried and desperate as Beck continues to make headlines and get magazine covers, whereas Vannity continues to be the only three-hour on-air tribute show to Rush Limbaugh, whose show Sean cribs heavily, in addition to telling everyone they’re a great American.  He simply doesn’t have the intelligence or acting chops or much of anything else to generate any excitement. Beck has some of that and has developed a cult-like following of enthusiasts. And Vannity knows that FOX News execs are considering moving Glenn Beck into primetime, perhaps even into Hannity’s prized 9-10:00 p.m. Eastern time-slot and moving Vannity into the less watched Greta Van Surgery hour.

The only thing keeping Vannity in the prized slot he has now is not his performance or Q factor.  It’s that he’s close friends with FOX News Vice President of Programming Bill Shine, and they sometimes ride into New York together from their Long Island homes.

Vannity, right now, is probably hoping that Glenn Beck’s career ends–as Beck ludicrously said about Scott Brown–“with a dead intern.” Good luck with that.

Hey, Sean, you’re a Great Unadmired American.

Here’s the complete list of most admired American TV personalities according to the poll:

1) Oprah Winfrey
2) Glenn Beck
3) Jay Leno
4) Ellen DeGeneres
5) Hugh Laurie
6) Jon Stewart
7) Charlie Sheen
8 ) Mark Harmon
9) David Letterman
10) Bill O’Reilly

I DON’T LIKE ANY OF THEM.

So….who is that guy in the picture alongside Glenn Beck?? (never seen him before.)

J.S. on January 26, 2010 at 3:31 pm

This is just too funny. I haven’t watched Vannity in a long time. However, I do watch Fox for their news content, and that is where I see what these guys plan to do on their shows. What’s really funny is that Vannity seems to try to emulate Beck’s show at times. Beck has been having town hall meeting style shows, and now Vannity is doing the same thing.

Could Vannity be loosing viewership because of his metrosexual looks? His make up artist (or whatever you call those people) must apply Vannity’s makeup with a cement trowel.

Jarhead on January 26, 2010 at 3:42 pm

I think that Sean needed Colmes to play off, as dense as Colmes was and is. I usually agree with Sean but the rarara stuff gets on my nerves.

J: Actually, Colmes was the far smarter of the two. That’s why Vannity is lost without him. Don’t judge intelligence based on the ability to mimic RNC talking points or whether you agree with the person ideologically. DS

Julian on January 26, 2010 at 4:38 pm

I would agree with Debbie. Having a chat with Mr. Colmes would be far more pleasurable and intellectually engaging than anything you would get from Sean Hannity. Hannity is like Jerry Lewis after he lost Dean Martin, an increasingly inane bore. Colmes made Hannity tolerable, as did Martin in the case of Lewis.

      Worry01 on January 26, 2010 at 6:09 pm

I listen to Hannity on 1230AM driving home at night. There is no other talk radio station I can get. He is tiresome and not very skilled. I don’t know that he is not smart but there is something not right.

O’Reilly does not really grab me either.

I really like Beck and think he is quite intelligent and professional in his craft – he makes full use of his skills. But his constant drumbeat of doom leaves me depressed. I also don’t like the over-the-top constant self promotion of all the leading commentators but I guess that it is their business and they treat it as such.

JLin on January 26, 2010 at 3:48 pm

I think Sean Hannity was better off with Alan Colmes. Its clear he doesn’t shine as a solo act. And he doesn’t command the audience of Rush Limbaugh and he lacks the sharp wit of Mark Steyn.

And as Debbie noted, he’s not widely admired by the country.

NormanF on January 26, 2010 at 3:50 pm

Debbie:

What is your critique of Mark Levin? He and Hannity seem to be pals but Levin is outstanding in my opinion. I would love to discuss politics over a beer with him. And you too.

JL: I’ve addressed this repeatedly on this site, including, I believe, in response to you. Please try my search engine. You vastly overrate this whining animal rights activist who made excuses for Fred Thompson’s pro-Hezbollah, pro-illegal alien campaign manager, and attacked the great Dorothy Rabinowitz as an old bag (not much older than he is) for supporting McCain for President. He’s a hack who has his show ONLY because he’s a Vannity tush-licker and got Vannity to require stations carrying Vannity’s show to purchase Levin along with him. If that’s your idea of “outstanding,” you aim low. DS

JLin on January 26, 2010 at 3:54 pm

Oprah Winfrey – self-absorbed, dietary issues, racist
Glenn Beck – informative, story teller, drama queen
Jay Leno – afraid to make jokes about Obama
Ellen DeGeneres – made a career from her sexual orientation
Hugh Laurie – House is a bully and I despise bullies
Jon Stewart – political hack
Charlie Sheen – he’s got issues, in real life and as Charlie
Mark Harmon – Gibbs is OK
David Letterman – unfunny geek
Bill O’Reilly – triangulates his positions, race sensitive

Rick on January 26, 2010 at 4:12 pm

    Rick –
House is only a character. Hugh Laurie isn’t a bully. He was/is a British comedian and a very likeable guy in real life.

    Lulu35 on January 26, 2010 at 4:26 pm

The major problem with Hugh Laurie is that he’s a friend of the abysmal Stephen Fry. But as an actor, he does his character well. Unfortunately, his character is nowhere near as fun and sociopathic as he was in the first year.

      Occam's Tool on September 8, 2010 at 4:24 pm

The flavor of the month is . . . I thought you did not like Glenn Beck. His pushing for a third party is wrong, self-destructive and tiresome. That would only elect a liberal. Hannity was better with Colmes although Colmes is terrible. O’Reilly keeps giving Obama the benefit of the doubt, which he does not deserve. On the radio, Steve Malzberg is great and I wish he were on at a better time.

J: I still don’t like him. Where did I say I did? Did you miss the part in the first paragraph, where I said I’m not a fan of any of the three? RIF–Reading Is Fundamental. DS

Julian on January 26, 2010 at 4:35 pm

Debbie tells it like it is, sharp, and to the point. Vannity beats around the bush never makes a salient point and leaves alot to be desired.

Sic Semper Tyrannus on January 26, 2010 at 4:42 pm

Debbie,
I don’t get your hatred and ugliness toward Glenn Beck. He has uncovered and reported on how many communists and progressives in the Obama Admin.? The man is a patriot and incredibly brave. Don’t you think that some of BHO’s inner circle are hoping or planning for his untimely demise? Furthermore, you loved to point out people’s blind spots without identifying your own. You heap praise on Gretchen Whitmer. I had the bad luck of having her as my rep. I am a proud member of the NRA. She demonized me and everyone else in the NRA in campaign ads a few years ago. She is no icon or hero. She is no better than Queen Jennifer. I really have enjoyed reading your blog for many years. But you love to expose Glenn Beck or Sean Hannity when they praise people with suspect pasts.
So, check out the things said and done by Ms. Whitmer in the past and offer a mea culpa when you find out she is just another leftist. I am sure glad she isn’t running for AG. We dodged that bullet.

A: If you think it’s “hatred” and “ugliness” to point out how ignorant Beck appears when he repeatedly promotes extremist Muslims as “moderates” on his show and when he constantly praises Hezbollah’s Congressman Darrell Issa as a “hero,” then you and I define truth differently. I define it as facts, and you dismiss it as hatred and ugliness so your head can remain in the comfort of the sand.

Also, RIF–Reading Is Fundamental. I specifically noted that Gretchen Whitmer is a liberal Democrat and praised her specifically and ONLY for choosing to drop out of a race for statewide office to actually be a mother to her kids, rather than the Hillary Clinton “It Takes a Village” view that Sarah Palin–and now, Palin “conservatives”–are gaga for. I never “heaped” praise on her. I am aware of her anti-gun positions, and as a proud supporter of the Second Amendment, I would never endorse or support her for anything. Please up the prescription on your reading glasses. DS

andy on January 26, 2010 at 5:23 pm

“You heap praise on Gretchen Whitmer. I had the bad luck of having her as my rep. I am a proud member of the NRA.”

How did Debbie heap praise on Ms. Whitmer? She simply saluted her decision to make her young children a priority over running for attorney general. Is that in any way supporting that woman’s political positions? Are you unable to praise someone who does something correct in s family matter because they are not your political bed buddy? That is a shallowness I would expect from Move On or Media Matters reader. If you desire to be the conservative equivalent of Keith Olbermann, go right ahead.

    Worry01 on January 26, 2010 at 6:21 pm

Glen Beck is a failed hack ZOO Keeper DJ who went the Right wing talk route. He steals alot from Michael Savage and others. Now that he hired his ex partner in crime in Pat Gray, their schtick is old.

dirtyleb on January 26, 2010 at 5:31 pm

Debbie, I agree that Glenn us a drama queen and not always on the mark but dang the man has started to inform and educate the people. I will take what we can get, especially on TV, I don’t care if it is Fox or not. (They have their share of liberals but they are best out there) Vannity, I quit watching because he is so annoying and he steals your material without giving you credit. (I heard Rush give you credit a few weeks ago btw) Vannity can only parrot talking points. My husband would like to throw that football at his head. Still we need to work together to succeed if we are going to succeed in turning this country around to it’s founding principles. No?

giblacker on January 26, 2010 at 5:44 pm

Glenn Beck has earned his position through his own horsepower. Hannity and O’Reilly, who are in far better time slots, do have Beck breathing down their necks. O’Reilly has become rather old and stodgy as of late, while Hannity cannot seem to get past his desire for the bodily resurrection of Ronald Reagan. When a movement looks almost exclusively backwards, it is in real trouble. Glenn Beck is very imperfect and strange indeed, but he has managed to fill the vacuum left by Hannity and O’Reilly quite effectively. His libertarian views and Ayn Rand worship(almost the same thing sometimes)are a bit scary, but he has connected with an audience that has been neglected, if not ignored by the political establishment. Mr. Beck is a product of a political system that has gone askew.

    Worry01 on January 26, 2010 at 7:16 pm

Colmes was better? I am still laughing..
Where is Debbie’s defense of Rush against the communist
ADL leader Abe Foxman?

LillyWest on January 26, 2010 at 5:57 pm

If a high school graduate who has mastered Republican Party talking points is impressive, then Sean Hannity is an intellectual indeed. Mr. Hannity is not even up to doing a proper interview. If things are not carefully scripted, he falls apart. Note that he he often either avoids or falls apart when he tries to ask a follow up question of a guest. Also, more than once, he has looked on with incomprehension when he has given more than a fairly simple answer.

    Worry01 on January 26, 2010 at 7:32 pm

Worry01 – I definitely agree with you. Have you also noticed that when Vannity doesn’t get the answer he wants, he turns it into a yes or no question to suit his arguement? And then he repeats over and over again, yes or no, answer the question, yes or no,… I guess he cannot let anyone answer with a few words – the answer he gets might be beyond his mental capabilities.

Jarhead on January 26, 2010 at 8:51 pm

Yes, you are correct on that “”Yes or “No” stuff he falls into. It is almost childish. There are times to do that when someone is being evasive, but not when someone is trying to give you a genuine answer. That is rude and defeats the purpose of an interview. It comes down to why keep a marginal drain plug like Hannity when there are certainly better people out there who could take his place?

        Worry01 on January 26, 2010 at 9:28 pm

I heard Vannity just today talking to an obvious liberal caller, who supposedly had a PHD. Vannity talked down to the caller and addressed him as “Mr. PHD”, as if he had educational credential that far exceeded the caller. This caller told Vannity that he was a long time listener and was very polite, yet Vannity got rude with him. I have heard it before that Vannity has only high school education and if true, it certainly doesn’t have much to hang his hat on.

Vannity sponsors the “Freedom Concerts” yet when President Bush was prosecuting the border patrol agents in his last year in the white house, Vannity never said a work, yet he always professes to support the police and military. He said nothing because Bush is a Republican and Vannity always upholds the party mantra. The bset radio talk show host out there today is Michael Savage.

S: Spot on analysis, and typical Vannity. Yes, he’s a high school grad, and while some high school grads are smarter than some with graduate degrees, Vannity ain’t one of ’em. And it shows. As for the “Freedom Concerts,” that’s a huge scam and my expose of it goes up on this site within days. Stay tuned. DS

steven espy on January 26, 2010 at 10:35 pm

Well, the top choices of the younger demographics groups certainly shows that the dumbing down of America is regressing nicely.

For all his weaknesses, Beck strikes a chord with his condemnation of the Republican Party. Granted this condemnation is selective; he doesn’t address the pandering of the Republicans to Islam, makes screwball remarks, and is often quite weird. I think the fact that in spite of these things he has the following he does testifies to the strength of his maverick issue of calling for a third party.

I’m not sure yet we need a third party, but he certainly seems more vocal than anyone else with a mass following about addressing the putrification of the Republican party. He has a following by default; more reputable people with mass followings avoid the issue. If Debbie had a national talk show and talked about it she’d likely surpass Beck since her criticisms of the Republicans would be more comprehensive.

Colmes is very intelligent, but I’ve gotten the impression sometimes watching him that he can be disingenuous and misleading when he argues positions that are really tenuous.

Sean Hannity is obnoxious, a phony Catholic, and a phony conservative. And he is awfully touchy towards any criticism.

For any conservative that wants to see the true liberal colors of Sean, just watch this video from back in 2007 where he tries to beat up on a conservative priest from Virginia and the president of Human Life International. The priest wrote a column calling Hannity a liberal and “juvenile” and Hannity got so mad that he invited the priest onto his show to try to embarrass him. It shows how phony Hannity is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usTWwSbpWRc
The video shows that the “nice guy” and “good American” that Hannity tries to project on his radio show is a total act. The guy is truly liberal.

JM on January 26, 2010 at 7:32 pm

Of the Top Ten,it seems that only Beck that offers a show that requires deep thinking and thinking outside the Sheeple Box.

The rest of the shows are as shallow and vapid as they come.

O’Rielly actually lost a large part of his audience because he stated that “There were about 75,000 Protesters in Washington, D.C. on 9/12/2009” Sorry Bill, you shouldn’t parrot propaganda.

I am not realy a fan of Beck’s but I do find his show informative. And unlike infotainers like Rush and O’Reilly there’s a method to Beck’s madness. (Funny, it’s actually O’Reilly who needs Beck, and not the other way around)

Essentially, discerning and patriotic Americans are tired of being lied to by political hacks of both party’s and tired of being spoon fed fascist propaganda by the fringe media.

In fact, one of the main reasons we come to Debbie Schlussel.com is for the pure, unadulterated, unvarnished, Truth.

………….I agree totally.

I’ve only heard Hannity on the radio a few times and don’t like him at all. He’s lousy at interviews, clueless and of no help when he has opposing guests dukeing it out, like somebody that just walked in on a conversation he knows nothing about, as lost as Obama without his teleprompter. Granted, he has some good guests but the fact that he constantly invites libs & anti-Semites on his show “to debate them” and falls flat on his face really ticks me off and just proves he’s no real conservative.

The fact that Beck is so admited by OLDER PEOPLE shows that people like men that are henpecked by their wives which Beck has said and brageed about many times in fact with the Brown thing he said if he said that his wife and daughters would beat him up or similar words to this I don’t remember the exact words. If he thinks his daughters should walk all over him and this is an ADMIRED PERSON that says a lot about our culture and society that didn’t just start in this generation. I don’t think anything is more undesirable then this. Adam’s sin was that he went along when Eve told him to disobey G-d and he made excuses “well my wife told me to do it” and G-d didn’t except this response. He could have been subtle about it but in some way he could’ve said I ‘m sorry G-d told us not to eat from the apple and I think this story shows that the book was written by G-d as human nature has not changed much.

Debbie – excellent analysis of Mark Levin and all of them, actually.

I think O’Reilly has grabbed on the Glenn Beck’s coat-tails, (their tour together) because he wants to keep Beck close to him.

As they say, “keep your friends close but keep your enemies closer”. I think Bill indirectly and subconciously (sic) sees Glenn as a threat.

Marianne on January 26, 2010 at 11:01 pm

Keep hammering away Debbie. These pundits on Fox and wherever always measure up short. It is really getting embarrassing listening to many conservatives I meet and they espouse Beck, Vannity and Fox. Well this is the state of the world conservatives are at now. Conservatives can do better.

The list is a joke. The only I would think is ok is Jay Leno. I would put Nancy Grace, John Walsh on list. I like Megyn Kelley, John Stossel and Bob Ley of ESPN sports. Lou Dobbs, before Obama Nation drove him off the air.

Debbie I really would like to know what you think of the ACORN-buster dude who went WaterGate and tapped in the phones of Mary Landrieu. WTF!!?? I mean ACORN was destroying itself and dude wants to play Inspector Gadget. Maybe he didn’t take his ritilin and went ‘rogue’? Is Steven Crowder Next?? Please leave good investigative journalism to the Pros.

CS: Megyn Kelly is a major airhead. Her source of news and history is Fraudkin’s site, where she first learned in 2008 that Muslims do honor killings. She’s mostly an ignoramus. E.D. Hill was the smart blonde, and Vannity’s FOX News VP buddy fired her and promoted Kelly. DS

It amazes one to realize the extent to which this silly country is susceptible to such blatant propaganda as spewed forth on a Daily basis by FOX Noise.

These are the days of America’s ultimate doom. When a clueless thought Nazi like Glenn Beck is able to hijack America political conversation, it only proves beyond a wisp of a doubt that America has swallowed the fatal capsule of its own demise.

Seriously, did you ever, in your weirdest, stupidest fantasies think your country would fall as low as it has? It kinda makes you wonder.

O’Reilly won’t say a bad thing about Obama and continually tells everyone how Obama is really smart because O’Reilly wants Obama on his show. It would seem that O’Reilly cannot wrap his “Harvard Educated” brain around the concept that Obama may be pushing his agenda in order to ruin the country. And you are right, Road Scholar, that O’Reilly insisted that the 9/12 Rally was not well attended. In addition, O’Reilly constantly talks down to any women on his show.
It must scare the White House to death that the #2 person on that list constantly calls out the administration as Marxists. If Beck is THAT popular it would mean that much of the country agrees with him. November elections will be very interesting indeed.
Beck, inadvertantly I believe, may have helped seal the fate of Sarah Palin when he asked her who her favorite Founding Fater was. She looked bewildered, hesitant and very un-Presidential. Right after that she comes out campaigning for MaCain’s Senate re-election. Stick a fork in her.
Overall, though, I find Beck bizarre. And a third party is a sure way to elect another Obama. Always notice that the Libs always encourage a third party for the right? They always tell us what the Republicans are doing wrong. Does anyone believe the Left has our best interests at heart? Maybe Beck wants to run as a third party candidate. That would be a very bad thing. Just because your car has a flat and needs a tune-up doesn’t mean you throw it away. Just fix the car.

Bob on January 27, 2010 at 4:22 am

Any most admired list in this country is pretty worthless to me. That Charlie Sheen would be on it shows how shallow we are as a nation. As for the Fox News anchors and contributors,
they may be imperfect as we all are, but they are the best on the air as the ratings prove. Gone are the days when David Brinkley was about the only one on the air who was objective and we only had NPR, CBS, NBC, and ABC to feed us the propaganda.

I don’t care for Sean, he’s a lightweight, and I agree about the football and the “Great American” baloney. He definitely
misses Alan Colmes, who sucks but is a pretty decent debater.
I wish you had a show Debbie, I’m sure it would be a great one,
but I bet there would be criticism from all sides too.

Daniel K on January 27, 2010 at 8:57 am

I have to disagree with you on Megyn Kelley. Every time she has a liberal spokeshole on, she rips them a new one. She does have a law degree and it shows when she questions her guests. I hope she doesn’t get her info from Malkin, however I wouldn’t doubt it. I did like E.D. Hill as well. She probably got fired or released because she did some serious journalism against Islamic terrorism. Hope she turns up elsewhere. Once you leave Fox, you are basically blacklisted form MSM.

zerO’Reilly- the perpetual fence sitter trying to pass his butt oops I mean ego off as fair and balanced. His ignoranant shallowness is illustrated by his useage of Mark Lamont Hill as a so-called expert on islam, Iran, Obama etc… Mr. Hill’s so-called expertise is hip hop cultural studies, but in zerO’Reilly’s view Mr. Hill is an expert on everything. Illustrating zerO’Reilly’s ignorance as much as Mr. Hill’s. zerO’Reilly advertises and uses noble charities in an egotisitcal fashion, always trying to say look at me look at me I am great and generous.

Hannity- Tries to defelect the empty space between his right and left ears with the same tired guests on his panel. His name should be changed to Walking Eagle- so full of sh*^ that he is too heavy to fly.

Beck- Was refreshingly different at first, but, like a drama queen, wears on one’s nerves causing any valid points to be lost in his histronics. Much of what he babbles about is available without the drama, i.e. at the book store, library, on the internet. Quit watching him after he had Mr. Huntsman on and attempted to pity party the viewer into believing Mr. Huntsman made great personal sacrifices for his medical research center. While the medical center and its purpose is great and admirable, a successful businessman of Mr. Huntsman’s stature would have no problem convincing financial backers to support his charities. A more noble segment would have been having every day americans, whom Mr. Beck claims to represent, that make a more significant personal and financial sacrifice for the benefit of others.

I, personally, prefer John Stossel. His shows discuss relevant current events with less bull, les ego and less sensationalism. Plus he is more even handed when allowing differing opinions to be expressed, unlike zerO’Reilly, Walking Eagle aka Hannity or Beck.

Years ago when Vannity was a bigger nobody, he aligned himself with Free Republic and agreed to be a guest speaker at one of their nutty events. As the event grew closer, critics became more vocal about how goofy the whole thing was. Vannity immediately cancelled and was nowhere to be found. He was extremely sensitive to what the left said about him, even then.

Don’t forget that he conference-called with the other moron Levin when they disrupted the radio-appearance with Alec Baldwin. I’m no defender of Baldwin’s, but I thought it was one of the most ignorant and childish things I’ve heard in years. It got a big “FAIL”, mostly because they weren’t even clever.

Levin used to come on FR all the time and pick fights. Once he told an 89-year old lady to look him up so he could kick her ass. When she offered to send her grandson in her place, Levin disappeared.

I’m glad Debbie is taking this subject on, because none of these people are helping. They are simply marketing their wares (books, appearances, clothing, merchandise) to the VRW consumers.

Ick.

Admired TV/movie personalities—Jon Voight. It pretty much ends there. Oh, and the Zucker who did the movie with Voight. That’s about it.
