The Disaster Spreads: Deportation of Haitian Illegal Aliens Halted ‘Til When?!

By Debbie Schlussel

With much of Haiti in ruins after this week’s devastating 7.0 earthquake, I can understand why some U.S. lawmakers want to halt the deportation of Haitian illegal aliens in our midst.  We’d look–and would be–heartless to deport 30,000 people back to the island dominated by destruction.

haitianboatpeople

Haitian Aliens Trying to Sneak Into U.S.

That said, there must be strict limits, and sadly, the handwriting’s on the wall that ultimately there won’t be.  There are many downtrodden, disaster-stricken countries around the world to which we deport illegal aliens on a regular basis.  And for how long do we allow these illegal aliens–some of them in tax-funded shelters and detention centers–to remain on our soil.  After six months, there should be enough rebuilding–with the inpouring of international help–that the deportations should resume.

But liberal American lawmakers want to halt Haitian deportation indefinitely.  That’s a bad move and a slippery slope.  As we all know, provisions like this which don’t have sunsets, simply never end.  And we don’t need 30,000 people who knew better, but broke the law, stealing American jobs permanently. I agree with the Homeland Security position which is less committed to anything long-term. Frankly, it’s unfortunate that we grant this status to people from Somalia–which has led to a huge immigration wave of extremist Muslims Somalians and, as I’ve noted, an ever-expanding crime wave against Americans committed by Somalian Muslims across our nation.

Lawmakers and immigration groups are calling on the Obama administration to grant Haitians in the USA, including those here illegally, a special temporary legal status that would protect them from deportation and allow them to take jobs.

That would be a step beyond what the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced: a halt in deportations “for the time being.” About 30,000 Haitians now in the USA had been ordered deported.

The DHS can grant Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to people from countries experiencing civil war, natural disaster or some other catastrophe.

Immigrants from El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Somalia and Sudan have the status.

“There is no way to safely return Haitian citizens to their country,” Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., wrote to President Obama on Wednesday after the Tuesday earthquake.

The temporary status “is in the range of considerations,” DHS spokesman Matt Chandler said.

Temporary Protected Status is granted for a specific period, such as 18 months, but it can be extended. Honduras’ and Nicaragua’s designations date to 1999 after Hurricane Mitch.

Uh, why are they still here, more than ten years later? Helloooo . . . ? This is what will happen with no sunset date for Haitians’ stay of deportation. We need to end all of these. As our friend, Dan Stein from the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), notes:

“In some cases, such as TPS for citizens of El Salvador, the triggering event occurred nearly a decade ago,” he said, referring to earthquakes in 2001.

I think Dan and I can forget about these Haitian deportees ever going home. And if there is a sunset on their stay of deportation, you can bet they’ll file a discrimination lawsuit alleging racism or some other sort of ethnic bigotry, if they don’t get the same decade plus of welcome mat that the other groups get. Ten years is a long time to establish all kinds of excuses–and produce anchor babies–in order to stay here.

I see this whole thing as yet another immigration enforcement disaster.

I would agree. It is appropriate to halt such proceedings for a year or less, but no more. Those other cases represent nothing more than disquised legalization, and nothing more. Also, I would propose cutting or eliminating quotas for Somalia, Pakistan, and other Moslem countries to compensate. I would actually prefer helping Haitians than people from those other places.

1000’s of Haitian survivors MAY be brought to Central Florida

wtd on January 15, 2010 at 3:10 pm

Don’t send them to Houston, we still haven’t recovered from the Katrina refugees who burned down hotels and sent the crime rate through the roof. No good deed goes unpunished…

And now we are getting all the economic refugees from Kalifornia and the Left coast, not to mention all the illegal aliens DUIs jamming up the roads. Nothing like coming to Texas and trying to do to it what they did to their own dirty little banana republics.

Let them stay in the White House

A: We still have Hurricane Katrina victims living here in the Detroit area at hotels on public assistance. DS

when you learn how to spell California properly, your opinion will begin to matter!!!

Dee on January 17, 2010 at 11:26 pm

Here’s a crazy idea. What do you do with 30,000 illegal Haitians looking for work? Why not put them to work in disaster relief and have them rebuild their own damn country. With the hundreds of millions of dollars worth of aid pouring in there, surely we can find a way to allocate some of those funds to support the repatriation of these illegals. Who knows the country better than them? Surely they would want to go back to at least be sure their own relatives are alright, wouldn’t they?……OH WAIT….the plan is to bring all their relatives here while we spend hundreds of millions of dollars to fix a country everyone wants to run away from….Brilliant….simply brilliant.

Billy on January 15, 2010 at 3:25 pm

YOU ARE REALLY DANM AND SELFISH, THIS LAND CALL AMERICA OF THE UNITED STATES IS BUILT ON ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT LIKE THESE PEOPLE. BEFORE YOU COME WITH THIS NONESENSE RACIST CRAP, DO AND DO YOUR RESEARCH ON WHAT AMERICA REALLY IS. Your grandparents parents were also illegal at a point and noone sent theirs asses back to their land. be real, learn your history and dont be stupid….

fb on January 17, 2010 at 5:53 pm

Don’t allow them to stay here indefinitely and deport them back home as soon as conditions allow them to resume life in their own country. America cannot be the world’s flophouse and a humanitarian response is just that – its not a permit to stay in this country. We must help people in need but that doesn’t give them license to abuse our generosity.

NormanF on January 15, 2010 at 3:50 pm

I don’t understand why solely the US must host refugees. Why not Cuba, Venezuela, Canada or other countries with socialized medicine?

Jewish Marksman on January 15, 2010 at 3:50 pm

Debbie, I agree with you. My position (see above) is the one you and I share but unfortunately these people are going to be allowed to stay here indefinitely. And its not fair to deport the Haitians when we haven’t deported any one else back home. Don’t hold your breath waiting for Congress to begin ordering that our immigration laws be enforced.

NormanF on January 15, 2010 at 3:54 pm

Jewish, America is the most generous country in the world. I think its only fair to insist though that other countries also contribute their part of the burden in assisting with this crisis. The problem is the multileralist Obama certainly won’t do it.

NormanF on January 15, 2010 at 3:56 pm

We should dump all of them at 3am on the shores of the West Bank.

Sometimes the easiest solutions and opportunities are far too often passed up.

Steve Harkonnen on January 15, 2010 at 4:25 pm

Bunch of twisted minds on here, I see. There but for the grace of God and all that goes out the window pretty quickly for you when we’re talking about refugees from the one of the poorest nations in the world, huh?

wolfetone on January 15, 2010 at 4:50 pm

Wolfetone, explain to me why WE are suddenly responsible for all these people? Why is it that the world just expects us to support everyone in need? I can already see the next liberal crusade; “Rebuild Haiti”. Billions more of our tax dollars will be sent somewhere else to people who don’t deserve it while Americans here are losing everything. Billy is right. Send them all back to Haiti. Let them help rescue the victims and then clean up the mess. It’s THEIR country, let them rebuild it.

White Rook on January 15, 2010 at 6:58 pm

i cant believe how in 2010, and you and billy are still so ignorant, lol. how can u open your mouth to say that these people in a situation like this dont deserve the help. The haitians at a point early in history helped the united states to fight the brittish for our independence. and the united states is an hegemon in the democratic world and thats what democracy does, you guys are just dumm or stupid or simply racists. you guys are talking about tax dollars, you both are most likely to be on welfare eating some else’s tax dollars. please save these ignorant selfish and racist comments to yourself and your mamas.

fb on January 17, 2010 at 6:00 pm

If you expect the politicians to have practical solutions, you are outa yer mind! Washington is an insane asylum run by the inmates. Since 1993, more than three billion dollars have been dumped into Haiti and what has it accomplished? Our politicians would feel very comfortable down there….lawless! Oh well, ya’ll have a good day!

arejaymack on January 15, 2010 at 9:06 pm

Time for the administration to follow the law as it was intended. TPS is TEMPORARY Protected Status. TEMPORARY does not mean permanent. It also doesnt mean until such time as you can get Congress to shove amnesty down the throats of the American people. Time to enforce the laws that exist. End TPS for Guats and El Sals – because the situation there which resulted from a crisis has changed. Congress needs to show the voters that it has the fortitude to enforce the laws it has wasted all its hotair passing – and then only MAYBE will the voters consider any type of amnesty.

belugajedi on January 15, 2010 at 9:18 pm

And this is a prelude to a bigger problem. We all know how the definition of ‘rights’ has been expanded. From the constitutional definitions we have gone to the ‘right’ of gay marriage, the ‘right’ to not have self-esteem attacked, and so on.

We can expect the definition of ‘disasters’ to start getting expanded, and having one manufactured pretext after another of what constitutes a disaster-stricken country where we have to let their people in uncritically and, effectively without restrictions. The fact that most Republicans and most talk-show hosts have a ‘me-too’ attitude doesn’t help.

Little Al on January 16, 2010 at 7:27 am

And why America? Part of the silly notion, exemplified by Obama, but by his recent Republican predecessors also that we are a great country because of our political correctness. Political correctness is how we will gain influence in the ‘international community’. Our president’s trips and apologies around the world are an example. That is why the US is taking on this project of resettling the Haitians.

Needless to say, a sub-theme is, as Rush indicated, Obama’s desire for political gain, but he has a lot of company of other politicians and talk-show hosts that are trying to score points with their ‘compassion’.

At least we haven’t gotten to the point where we are taking up collections for the Runaway Bride or that girl who was killed in Aruba, but that may be down the road.

Little Al on January 16, 2010 at 7:32 am

Haitians brag about how they kicked the French out and their so called independence. Hell if that is independence bring back the colonists. Liberals claim how colonists were evil and bad. Colonization was the only civilization that countries like Haiti ever had. Now they don’t have colonists, they have no infrastructure and now live in chaos and uncivilized. Oh yeah these 3rd world nations talk about how bad America is but when their chips are down they run here for sanctuary.

The problem with modern day immigrants legal and illegal is liberals brainwash them from day 1 to become victims. It is about ‘Americans owe them’ the lifestyle of the average Americans. So every social program is created to make sure all their needs are taken care of. Previous immigrants came with the notion that all they wanted was an opportunity. They figured with freedom and law and order then the would make the most of their opportunities. It used to be that immigrants made America stronger because of their self-determination. Forget that. Liberals ruined another great thing about this country.

One can only hope this would be the best thing for Haiti for it can’t get any worse. The world is helping and they can start all over. Japan was hit with two atomic bombs and became a world leader. Korea went through a devastating war and have become prosperous. Many South American countries like Brazil, Argentina, Columbia have moved past many of their problems and are prosperous. In my honest opinion the best thing for Haiti is for them to be colonized. Until they can act like civilized people, money poured in will just be good money thrown after bad. Since they are “independent” and sovereign it is not our governmental duty to take care of them. We have a moral obligation to take care of the suffering, since we our brother’s keeper.

I was listening to the tirade of Danny Glover, who I’ll never watch, or pay to watch anything he does. He’s like the gold standard of Hollywierd lefties that think we should take care of every damn country in the world and oh yeah global warming caused it so we all should be ashamed. This is the last thing our country needed. At least we still have the 2nd amendment and if Coakly is an indication as to the country finally waking up I have one thing to say: THANK G-D!
More 3rd world country scum bags.
The hurdles placed in the way of European travelers and immigrants are like the wall of China and this stuff happens.

Joe on January 16, 2010 at 11:04 am

Your education begins – As I am fully versed in matters of INA and politics of the last 30 years involving immigration, this is what you will eat and enjoy. 1. TPS has NEVER been temporary(Guats and El Sals from the 80s remain here as do their hundreds of thousdand of children), 2. Haitians will come to the U.S. through family ties under Humanitarian Paroles 3. Staging is already beginning at our military base in Gitmo Base Cuba 4. The 50-100K that will eventually come through family reunification will be stanch Democratic voters. 5. A version of Amnesty will pass as well as health care arguing that illegal aliens need to “pay their fare share of taxes to help pay for the program” (it is a lie as most have 3-5 children in our schools hospitals and prisons and receive child tax credits and though they will file taxes, they will not pay any or be subsidized by others, I mean YOU).6. They and their children will be educated in the way of victimhood and DEMAND public assistance (after all they are stacking bodies in the streets now as they are upset at the lack of speed in which aid is coming to Haiti) 7. Our country slowly gets economically drained to feed the social machine and gov run institutions. WHY – Because half of America is occupied by sheep who have vote for an affirmative action president and has ushered in a Democratic majority in Congress who are treasonous and anti-American in every way. SO – as the progressives age into a failed healthcare and life ending results from the system they created and their social security (which they paid for) is reduced to nothing, they will sit on the porch and wither way holding on to their Mao books and remembering the day Nancy and Barry ran the country in the days of Spamalot! There is only one chance – 2010 and 2012 elections. Feed the revolution, BE the revolution.

Marty on January 16, 2010 at 12:17 pm

Debbie, Very sad to see what has happened in Haiti. However, we have seen this exact scene before in …. New Orleans.

No one can predict when or where a disaster will occur. Here we have people living in a country on a major fault line and right smack in the middle of hurricane alley. Why was nothing stored away for any such emergency.

Apophis on January 16, 2010 at 3:46 pm

Are you kidding me? ” Why was nothing stored” for an earthquake? Get a clue! Regardless of “storing” things around…The magnitude of the geological impact was severe…”Storing” something or two won’t do jack…Google works, you know!

Dee on January 17, 2010 at 11:32 pm

I agree with Debbie with regard to the granting of unlimited immigration for Haitians into the United States. Typically what happens is a brain drain…the best and brightest leave…it’s really not in the best interests of Haiti (in the long run).

I think such disasters then to bring out both the worst and the best…(along the lines of “the worst” — that would Pat Robertson and Rush Limbaugh — not to mention the UN and the Belgians. CNN was reporting that Sanjay Gupta (what a heroic fellow!) was at a makeshift medical tent — not really a hospital, more of a triage unit — and all the UN doctors were told to evacuate due to an unspecified “security” threat! Thus, the UN doctors fled (although some supposedly departed relunctantly). Sanjay Gupta was left “in the lurch” when dozens of new patients arrived, expecting medical assistance. (What a disgraceful, disgusting disaster!) That was on Friday, then, the next day the United Nations (this bunch of cowards!) denied having told the doctors to leave!

Elizabeth Cohen of CNN also reported that in one locale there were 300 patients with critical injuries, and that if 100 (that’s one third of the patients) did not receive medical care within the next 24 hours, they would die. And the first true mobile surgery facility able to perfrom operations? It’s an Israeli team (G-D bless Israel). They were setting up (meanwhile, the Americans were having difficulties in getting their equipment together).

a lot of ignorant minds around here, i see…i pity you fools!

Dee on January 17, 2010 at 11:28 pm

this is not right, yes they are in bad times and so is the usa’s economy. it’s not are burdan to take care of them, it is as if we fell its or duty. well that nice in all but there is this saying you can lead a horse to water but you cant make him drink it, meaning if they wont help themselves why should we even try. as far as the immagration issue well you know what, they dont have a right to live here, i dont care why there here, there are these people all over the world who have came in the legal way and it not easy if it was everyone would be living here and that is kinda the problem everyone wants benifit everyone want goverment aid no one want to pay taxes or pay for that aid, and hello there isnt a whole lot of jobs out there. I mean check out the unemployment levels, over 10% around here.

so give them some food give them some water and if they want to rebuild let them, if not so be it not our problem.
