Music of the Day

By Debbie Schlussel

So, I just got back from a workout session at the gym.  And this song from my Zune (it’s on my IPod, too), part of my workout music, is spinning around in my head.  No matter what you think of Journey, this is a great song that, in my view, stands the test of time, even if it’s not one of the group’s more well-known hits.  It’s from the 1983 “Frontiers” album. Gotta love Neal Schon on guitar. He’s the master, especially at the end of the song. This and a mix of other hits from the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and ’00s is the background music for my running, stairmaster, weights, etc.

Get it for your IPod or other MP3 device.

This reminded me of a very catchy song – “Delayed Reaction” -by Foghat. You can hear part of the song here (just scroll down to “Delayed Reaction” and click on the “real” icon to the left of the title):

Neal Schon? Wasn’t he on Santana’s Caravanserai album? Because there’s some stunning playing on there.

Sounds like their other song from the Vision Quest soundtrack ‘Only the Young’. You gotta love those 80s videos. The cheese factor in those video is so thick.

I always loved Journey when they let Neal Schon crank it a little. This is an excellent workout song. I know the power balads paid the bills for Journey, but this is the stuff. Another killer: Line of Fire.

I was a room service waiter in 1980 at the Biloxi Hilton.
These guys stayed there when they did their show in Biloxi.

I met them the morning after their show.
I was surprised to see they’re all really short.

Great concert.
The Babys opened for them.

I love Journey. Break up songs abound.lol
Open arms comes on the radio and I still get a lump in my throat.

Vision Quest was my favorite movie when it came out. Soundtrack was awesome even with madonna on it. Red Ryder’s Lunatic Fringe makes me want to smash things with my bare hands!!! Excellent work out song.

Neal Schon learned his craft and technique at the right hand of the master, Carlos Santana. It’s no wonder his guitar playing is so good. Another Santana member also helped found journey and that was Greg Rolie. that Journey tune rocks!

What movie character spent a lot of time critiqueing 1980’s musical groups and leaving awkward situations by suddenly remembering that he needed to “return some videos?”

Wow. I bought this track a couple of years ago… Chain Reaction has been stuck in my head since 1983!

I knew Debbie and I had a lot in common… but wow!

Love Journey!!! In fact I was online listening to them the other night. Thanks for putting Chain Reaction on your site. There is some music that doesn’t age. Journey is one of them. I saw them in Phoenix 1983, those memories still remain w/me.

Just when I thought I couldn’t love you any more, Debbie.

Frontiers is far and away my favorite full-length Journey album.

Oh yeah it is. And I don’t care who knows it.

You like this, Debbie? ewwww.

Debbie,

You’re a genius when it comes to political analysis, but your musical tastes are
pedestrian. Journey, like most of the 80’s power ballad bands are a great example of the mediocrity of that decade. I’m glad they went the way of thin ties and mullets!

Ok, you’ve sold me. At first I thought it was a gay song, but after hearing it and remembering it…I like your assessment.

The music is really good and I can see how it gets stuck in one’s head.

Good pick!
