All Movied Out

By Debbie Schlussel

I spent the day, today, at what I call movie coma day.  As a member of the Detroit Film Critics Society, I spent all day in a dark movie theater watching movies.  Trust me, it ain’t fun.  Five movies back-to-back.  In Gitmo, it would be considered torture.  But we have to see them, so that we can vote on this year’s best movies.  Every major city has a film critics society, and the studios lobby us to vote for their movies and the actors in them.  As I’ve noted, I am also sent a number of DVD movie screeners to watch. I’ll be posting my picks–the nominations I sent as a member of the Detroit Film Critics Society–sometime tomorrow (and my top ten movies of the year list will be posted sometime at the end of December/beginning of January).

For now, here’s what we saw today (stay tuned for my reviews when the respective movies debut). Just remember, I sit through a lotta crap, so you don’t have to. Can you guess which–if any–of these I liked? Also remember, trailers are almost always waaaaay better than the actual movie.

*  “Me and Orson Welles“:

* “Broken Embraces“:

* “Nine“:

* “The Lovely Bones“:

* “A Single Man“:

I remember seeing Orson Wells as having a huge head and fat. Must be his High School pic.

Was “The Stoning of Sorya M” part of those you watched? I doubt Detroit would allow it, seeing how it is now officially banned in the Middle East.

I’m guessing that you liked “The Lovely Bones”, Debbie-I don’t know much about the film beyond Peter Jackson being involved,but he is a solid filmaker, even if he did add 15 endings to the “Lord of the Rings”. Craft generally trumps flash.

Wow…after viewing these trailers, if they are suppossed to be waaaay better than the movie’s themselves, I’m thinking the stinker must be “A Single Man”. Tom Ford lays an egg…

As for “Broken Embraces”, I’ll probably see it now matter how bad it is, subtitles or not…just because the way Penelope Cruz lights up that screen!

Glenn Beck’s A CHRISTMAS SWEATER came out just in time for the Oscars. No review?

I don’t remember you posting a list of your favorite and least favorite movies last year as you did for 2005,2006, and 2007. Well I’m not asking you to post it now 🙂

Don’t you just hate it when the trailer shows not only the best, but also the only good parts of the movie and the rest is two hours of filler? Happens with most of those dumb so-called comedies these days.
Obviously can’t comment on the movies here but as far as the trailers: ‘Me and Orson Welles’ looks watchable if I had time to kill but I wouldn’t go out of my way to see it.
With their avant garde mish-mash collage ‘Broken Embraces’ and ‘A Single Man’ tell me nothing except to stay away from these.
‘Nine’ (nine? So where are the little rag doll robots?) looks to have a half decent plot (mayby) but I don’t care much for musicals unless it’s Fiddler on the Roof.

That leaves ‘The Lovely Bones’ which looks very promising. Certain parts have an otherworldly “What Dreams May Come” look to them and the murderer brought to justice type plot is always tops on my list.
I hope when Deb said: “Also remember, trailers are almost always waaaaay better than the actual movie” she didn’t mean this one was the stinker of the bunch! Thanks Debbie, I’m looking forward to the reviews.

The only movie worth seeing this entire year was The Blind Side.
