Low Class: Now NFL Commissioner, Team Owner Attacking Limbaugh; Anti-Semitism, Death Threats OK for NFL Owners, But NOT Conservatism

By Debbie Schlussel

I used to like NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell because he’s been tougher on NFL criminals than any previous NFL commissioner by far.  But I don’t care for the guy anymore.  In fact, he nauseates me. For him, anti-Semitism, Israel-hatred, and death threats coming from NFL owners is okay. But NOT conservatism.

Sickening: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Now Attacking Limbaugh

Goodell lowered himself and entered the disgusting fray of faux-orthodoxy against Rush Limbaugh in his bid to become a part owner of the NFL’s St. Louis Rams.  He attacked Limbaugh as “divisive” and publicly opposed his NFL ambitions.  So did Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay.  Limbaugh may very well soon own part of the Rams.  And Goodell will have to eat crow and work with the ownership team of which he’s a part. This was a boneheaded move and not at all professional. Goodell reduced himself to a nobody by publicly denouncing Limbaugh.  These people sound like Politburo members, not gazillionaire owners and executives of a major American sports monopoly.

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay declared Tuesday that he would not approve a sale of the Rams to a group including Limbaugh, while NFL commissioner Roger Goodell cast polarizing comments by the conservative commentator as a “negative” for the league.

“I would not be in favor of voting for him,” said Irsay, adding that he might tap his former coach, current coach and the Colts’ star defensive end — all of whom are African-American — for direction. “If it was put before me, I could ask Tony Dungy, Jim Caldwell and Dwight Freeney and consult with them and see what position they’re coming from.

“Sometimes when there are comments made that are inappropriate, incendiary, insensitive … it’s bigger than football,” Irsay added. “As a nation, we have to watch the words that we say.”

Irsay maintains that owning an NFL franchise is a privilege that shouldn’t be afforded Limbaugh.

“Sometimes,” he said, “privileges are lost.”

In 2003, Limbaugh resigned as an analyst on ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown pre-game show after igniting controversy by contending that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb was favored by media members because he is African-American.

“They are polarizing comments that we don’t think reflect accurately on the NFL or our players,” Goodell said. “Those comments … are divisive. That’s a negative thing for us.” . . .

Goodell emphatically indicated that he would take issue if a team owner frequently made controversial comments about issues of politics and race.

“I have said many times before that we are all held to a higher standard here,” Goodell said. “I think divisive comments are not what the NFL is all about. I would not want to see those kind of comments from people who are in a responsible position within the NFL. No. Absolutely not.”

I find that interesting because, as I’ve noted on this site, Venus and Serena Williams are part owners of the Miami Dolphins.  Serena Williams recently swore at a U.S. Open line coach and essentially threatened her life, saying she’d shove something up the woman’s throat.  And no-one seems to be concerned that she’s an NFL part owner.  Venus Williams recently defended the United Arab Emirates’ apartheid policies against Jews with Israeli passports, when the Dubai Tennis Championships refused to allow Israel’s Shahar Pe’er to play in the tournament or even a visa to enter the country.

So, I guess anti-Semitism and death threats are A-Okay for NFL part-owners.  But being conservative is not.  And, as I’ve also noted previously, NFL Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney openly supported Barack Obama during the campaign and is now Ambassador to Ireland for it.  Since almost half the country voted for John McCain, that’s divisive.  And we can’t have division in the NFL, so time for him to go.

Oh, and while we’re at it, since Goodell is into fake orthodoxy and phony indignation, maybe he shouldn’t be NFL Commissioner.  After all, his wife is FOX News Channel’s Jane Skinner.  And we can’t have someone related to a FOX News personality as NFL chief.

Can we?

It just turns off conservatives are who are football fans. Well the NFL shot itself and people are taking note.

If it doesn’t want half of America to patronize it, good riddance!

It’s the National “Foot-in-the-mouth” League now. 😀

The hypocrisy of these clowns who cried about giving Michael Vick a second chance, but want to crucify Rush for his comments about Donovan McNabb, incorrect as they were….

The Tawana Brawley-ing of Rush Limbaugh continues, turning an otherwise cantankerous blowhard into a cause.

PS–Yes I’m conservative, but I never liked Rush.

The Razor on October 14, 2009 at 12:36 pm

Hi Debbie:

While you are distracted about Rush Limbaugh, here is a story the NFL does NOT want you to know about: there’s a players’ strike looming for 2011.

The owners and commissioners are probabably petrified of anything that could cause divisiveness between the players and owners. Professional sports revenues are DOWN due to the recession and a strike in 2011 would be economically devestating to the NFL.

I wonder if this fact plays into any of the antics we’re observing.

Have you ever read “The League” by David Harris? There were scoundrels among NFL owners in teh 1960’s and 1970’s and there’s no reason to think things have changed that much. … regardless of what one things of Rush Limbaugh.

This mean spirited attitude of the NFL Com and the Colts owner turns me against NFL football altogether- one less fan.I thought we had overcome this with the hope and change in the WH.

jeffrey on October 14, 2009 at 12:43 pm

Well I can say I’m quite shocked. While I can think of all kinds of four letter words for the son of Bob Ersay (who was responsible for the Colts leaving Baltimore), I’m kinda giving the Commish the benifit of the doubt….for now.

I don’t really care for the boot-licking republican Rush Limbaugh (who’s show bores the hell out of me), but I don’t think this is right to attack him like this.

I also hate it when politics are thrown into things they aren’t suppose to be in. Sports in this case. As a Ravens fan, I don’t want to know the political views of my team or the owner. I wanna cheer for the team!

The NFL keeps talking about reaching out to have more black QBs, coaches, executives and owners. The NFL wants to be “progressive” in minority hiring. I mean when will the NFL reach out and demand to have more white running backs, Asian linebackers, or Latino wider receivers? I mean they see blacks are supposedly underrepresented at those said positions or positions and made efforts to “rectify” a supposed wrong. Can we have camps funded by the NFL to reach out to suburban white kids to make them be running backs? Shouldn’t their logic follow we must have more diversity than just black athletes? Come on the league is 85% black. There was a time in California before the ban on affirmative action (put in only by public vote of the people) that their was talk that would put a cap on Asians admitted on their prestigious UC colleges. For “diversity sake”, Asians had outperformed their allotment. Their is no meritocracy in America. If you point out the statistics liberals and race baiters cry foul. If the statistics favor the liberal victimized “choice minority” then they will say the statistics speak for themselves. Because if any profession has 85% black composition then it is what is and is right. Reverse that to any occupation being 85% white then it must inherently be racist.

CaliforniaScreaming on October 14, 2009 at 1:20 pm

Roger Goodell is a twit. So is Irsay. Since when is the sale of a team contingent upon Irsay’s papal blessing? Regardless of all the banter (personally I’m tired of the racially insensitive BS) Rush has just as much right to own a team as anyone else. The players who bitch about it should shut the hell up and be happy about being paid multi-million dollar salaries while most of the country can’t afford to pay attention.

Venus and Serena Williams? They don’t impress me at all…never did, never will. They just happen to show their true colors like the rest.

I’m behind Debbie 100% on this one.

icenomore on October 14, 2009 at 1:22 pm

This blog post is so deluded.

Limbaugh is being opposed for being racist and making racist comments. Not for being conservative. Though if you think being racist and conservative are one and the same, then that tells me a lot about your messed up view of conservatism.

You should be ashamed for sticking up for racism, Ms. Schlussel.

Danny on October 14, 2009 at 1:40 pm

One doesn’t get to be the commissioner of the NFL without being a smooth-talking, pc, say-nothing, do-nothing, empty suit, Barack Obama wannabe, brown nosing twit. So these comments come as no surprise.

As Ayn Rand said of Wesley Mouch, Goodell is the zero at the meeting point of forces unleashed in opposition to one another.

The NFL now survives on government subsidies, as governments pay for stadiums, welfare pays the viewers to buy the beer that the advertisers sell on the Sunday TV commercials, state schools and government-backed student loans pay for ringers to pretend to be students so that Universities can field a team of ringers every Saturday., etc. Goodell is just the pretty boy face in front of the whole scandalous, expensive bread-and-circuses mess.

salt1907 on October 14, 2009 at 2:00 pm

If Limbaugh is denied, I won’t renew my Direct TV Sunday Ticket package next year.

BTW: What about Olberman on NFL broadcasts. That’s OK?

adam on October 14, 2009 at 2:05 pm

The NFL does not want the bad pub that would come along with Rush. 3/4 of the USA hates him. This is just Economics 101. You do not anger 3/4 of your customer base. The owners did not get rich by being stupid. Sorry Rush, catch the games on DirecTV.

jeffrey on October 14, 2009 at 7:02 pm

Danny,

Please specifically tell us what the EXACT racist remakes were made. Also, please cite your sources (No dude, you cannot use Wikipedia.)

Otherwise you are just another troll taking pot shots at Debbie.

Sam Adams on October 14, 2009 at 2:21 pm

Yeah, Danny boy. If Limbaugh points out the undeniable truth with regard to media bias favoring blacks, that is construed by you to be a “racist” comment? I guess when white folk call foul, they’re racist. But any number of blacks can point to a perceived racial slight, and not be “racist”. Is that your world Danny?

Spiffo on October 14, 2009 at 2:41 pm

Maybe we should just stop watching profession sports period! I do love my sports but it is getting out of hand the salary these spoiled jocks receive and having to hear from these owners who keep pricing the everyday joe right out of seeing a live game.

And Danny get clue okay why is every time a white person says something about a black person that is the truth it’s racial, well I am sit and tired of it I am going to go and start the NAAWP and you my friend can join!

Doug on October 14, 2009 at 2:56 pm

Razor,

Rush’s comments about McNabb were right on target. In 2003 when Rush made his remarks, McNabb was the poster child for the NFL on their tv promotions to the point of being silly. But it gets better, McNabb was named all-pro in 2003 and he was the 16th rated quarterback in the league with a 79.6 rating.
Name me a 16th ranked quarterback that was named all-pro with 16 td’s and 11 int’s.
Rush is not always right, but he nailed this one.

Michael on October 14, 2009 at 3:04 pm

According to ESPN, Rush has been blacklisted from being involved in the St. Louis Rams purchase. Just like liberals to stick up for their own! He never really had a chance. There some things in life even money can’t buy.

NormanF on October 14, 2009 at 4:30 pm

Californiascreaming, the percentage of Black players in the NFL is somewhere around 70% and not 85%. And you’re exactly right regarding meritocracy. America is not now nor has it EVER been a meritocracy. Certain people have always been given certain advantages by circumstance of birth long before “affirmative action” came along…

As far as Rush Limbaugh, this is the same Rush Limbaugh who engaged in his own irresponsible bit of “race-baiting” when he said that Serena William’s meltdown, Kanye West’ drunken and boorish ehavior at the MTV Awards, and the video of a White kid getting beat up by a Black kid on a school bus were all somehow connnected and were all examples of what happens in “Obama’s America”. I can’t seem to remember the last time the misbehavior of a White athlete, a White celebrity, and a White school kid were somehow linked to the “White” President in office at that particular time. Rush definitely pulled an “Al Sharpton” with that one….

And isn’t this the same Rush Limbaugh that also said that “the NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons.” So now this man wants part ownership of, in his view, a league of gangsters?

The bottom line is this. Most business owners don’t have syndicated radio shows where we get to hear their political views every day. And most of us really don’t know the political and racial views of the owners of our companies and some of us would be shocked if we did. Yet we go to work every day and collect a paycheck from them. Given that, Mr. Limbaugh has every right to try to own an NFL team. However, no one should be surprised at the uproar over this. Mr. Limbaugh is free to say what he wants on his show. No one is going to arrest him for it. But “freedom of speech” does not free you from the consequences of what you say, so NFL players, sports columnists and others have every right to oppose his ownership bid. And in the end, Mr. Limbaugh wins whether he gets part ownership of a team or not…the ratings on his show will only increase as a result of all this hooplah.

BLACK list……..ironic wouldn’t you say?

Hey! I thought libs hated these kind of lists as they smack too much of McCarthyism.

Sam Adams on October 14, 2009 at 4:34 pm

Yeah JJ you are such an impartial race authority.

NFL fan? Doesn’t bug you that Ray Lewis was part of the murder of another black guy and did the wise guy thing by not snitching. Either he did it or his buds did it and he kn ew who did it but he doesn’t care about the family of the dead man it’s about looking street and shit at the end of it all, eh? Badda bing badda boom. Guy kept his job and is celebrated in the black community for being the guy that didn’t snitch to the man. He isn’t the only guy to commit a violent felony and still starts games in the national felons league. But I guess those guys shouldn’t have to suffer for their actions or the fact that they’ve had current or past associations with gangs or hate groups like the nation of islam? Nah it’s ok cause they are just doing their thing and they can play ball. Hypocrites. Got to like how they choose Rush to get pissed about and not Soros who was a snitch for the nazis. Nothing wrong with being the snitch for the nazis, you can even be a registered democrap. Or a senator if you’re a former bigwig for the klan like Robert Byrd. As long as he doesn’t criticize black quarterbacks that choke in big games.

JibberJabber said: “I can’t seem to remember the last time the misbehavior of a White athlete, a White celebrity, and a White school kid were somehow linked to the “White” President in office at that particular time.” What are you talking about?
The whole CUP O’GUILT by the MSM has gone into overdrive the last two years. Why is every random event being linked to a “non-White” president as racist? Let’s pose that question on you. The Obama Joker Poster, the Obama Hitler Poster all deemed racist? Both had nothing to do with a racist. One by a liberal artist one by a Lyndon Larouche who put Bush with a Hitler image. Remember the shoe thrown at Bush. Knee slapping reaction by MSM. A joke about Obama and you are RACIST!! Tea party movement called by MSM as racist, because they can’t handle a black president? Any dissent on policy is racist? Really, I remember anti-war protest over Bush for years. The liberals act like dissent of a president never occurred before Obama. I voted for a black President Alan Keyes. To say that there isn’t any racism would be foolish, but to cast all dissent as racist is equally foolish.

JibberJabber said: “Certain people have always been given certain advantages by circumstance of birth long before “affirmative action” came along…” You are right and it will always be that way to some extent. We are creatures that make distinctions inherently embedded in our brains for survival and will never change. We don’t bite into an apple each time and wonder what it tastes like each time. We make distinctions on prior experiences. Our constitution has been amended to insure equal protection under the law. MLK believed in equality based on the content of their character. Affirmative action assumes a measured amount of discrimination in society and assumes certain groups are beneficiaries of discrimination and some are victims. So if you are deemed a victim, you get all the help regardless if it is real or not. This leap of faith is beyond the scope of the Constitution. So the quotas came in. Some people then became more equal than others. In order for an orderly rational society, judgments must be based on quantified measurements. So if some guy wins the 100m dash it is quantified by time, similar to a guy getting the highest test score it is based on a score. When society does away with merit based scoring the society is based on the whim of someone’s subjective accounts. It would be like watching an NFL game, not keeping score and deciding who won based on fans reaction.

One of my daughters has the same name as one of the execrable Williams sisters (she is in fact named after a deceased relative). People are constantly asking if she’s named after the tennis star. It is infuriating, and they are shocked when I am offended.

Ibn Abu on October 15, 2009 at 11:48 am

The NFL is 50% black. Rush is guilty of a lot of race-baiting and his ESPN comments about Donovan McNabb were not only stupid, but injected a racial element into the Eagles’ success that was odious. If 50% of a professional sports league were Jewish (handball, maybe) would the league likely put barriers up to prevent say Pat Buchanan from becoming an owner? You bet they would. Just because Rush has the shekels – that doesn’t mean he has the right to buy a sports team. He no more belongs in the NFL than Dennis Miller belonged as a Monday Night Football commentator.

Ira on October 15, 2009 at 2:19 pm

I have no repect for the NFL anyways! They allow felons to play and a lot worse. I’m also very PISSED that Kenny Stabler has YET to be inducted to the Hall of Fame!!!!!!!

Why lie? Venus Williams just received an award from the Jewish Defense League for supporting Miss Peer’s right to play in that tournament in Dubai. After winning, she even went so far as to say if she was not allowed to play the following year she would not return to the tournament. Venus also criticised their top dignitaries at the trophy ceremonies after winning!

Blog writing– promote your business.
Lots of companies currently use blogging web pages as
a casual means of connecting with their consumers. For the smaller sized, or new
company owner, it’s an outstanding way to advertise their products without
expensive advertising costs. Merely by posting a regular blog writing column, small business can usually pull in more company compared to by the a lot more traditional methods.
