HUH?! Reddit CEO Bans Salary Negotiations as “Sexist Against Women”

And this year’s Golden Tampon Award for Feminist Absurdity goes to . . . Reddit’s interim CEO. She permanently banned salary negotiations for employees of the San Francisco-based online social media company, saying that salary negotiations are “sexist” against women because men negotiate harder than women. Oh, and when you find out who the interim CEO is, you’ll realize this insanity figures into her long history of whining.

If the name Ellen Pao, Reddit’s CEO, sounds familiar, it’s because she recently lost a much-buzzed-about gender discrimination lawsuit she filed against a Silicon Valley venture capital firm. She filed the suit because she claimed she was passed over for a senior partner position at the firm after having an extramarital affair with a male co-worker. Apparently, she never heard the spot-on saying, “Don’t bleep where you work.” Oh, and her husband’s hedge fund filed bankruptcy, and he was accused of civil fraud. But despite these things (which might make any firm leery of promoting someone with this lack of scruples), Pao screamed, “Discrimination!”

And even though she lost on all counts of her lawsuit, she’s still screaming it. Now, it’s with this silly “salary negotiations are sexist” BS. What’s next?

The social-news site Reddit.com has a tip for new hires expecting to negotiate their pay: Don’t even try it. The San Francisco-based Web company, which has about 169 million unique monthly visitors and is known as the launchpad for viral Web phenomena, has a take-it-or-leave-it policy for starting salaries. . . . Bosses say that taking haggling out of the equation fosters transparency and fair pay.

Reddit Inc.’s interim chief executive, Ellen Pao, says that pay negotiations put women at a disadvantage because men negotiate harder than women. . . . Recent disclosures by technology firms of largely male and white or Asian workforces have sparked discussions about diversity and women’s experience in the industry. Many bosses are trying to come up with ways to attract and retain heterogeneous workforces, and they see pay and benefits as a crucial lever. “People who perform the same should be paid the same,” Ms. Pao says. “We want to make sure we maintain this level playing field.”

Prospective Reddit employees can choose between two offers—one weighted more toward equity, the other toward cash. With just about 50 employees, Ms. Pao says that it’s hard to know whether the company has a gender pay gap but she wants to ensure one doesn’t develop as the company grows.

Not everyone agrees. Users on Reddit’s own discussion boards took issue with the policy, with one sniping that “meritocracy is playing second fiddle to gender politics.” Kenan Abosch, who leads Aon Hewitt’s compensation consulting practice, cautions that A-players might not want to work for a company where pay is preset. Others question whether such policies actually help advance women.

I’m not quite sure why men are penalized for not being weak. Well, actually, I am sure. The point is to make men weak and to be penalized for showing any initiative whatsoever. And the further point is to make every process weaker to accommodate weaker women. That’s the real sexism.

Linda Babcock, an economics professor at Carnegie Mellon University who researches women and pay negotiation, says that standardizing starting salaries might go far in fixing pay imbalances. . . . “Women will follow the rules, men will still try to negotiate, and if they are successful, that will further the gap.” . . . Research by both Dr. Babcock and Hannah Riley Bowles, a Harvard University lecturer who studies women and negotiation, has shown that men are about four times more likely than women to negotiate pay but that women are viewed more unfavorably when they do so. As a result, “women’s reticence to negotiate is very real,” says Dr. Bowles.

Tough. Why would any sane corporate official set policy to accommodate the weakest elements of her company?

Also, Pao and others of her warped mindset, including Diapers.com founder (how appropriate!) Marc Lore, believe men are rude and have bad manners, which makes them succeed in salary negotiations.

The approach ensures the company isn’t biased toward loud or aggressive workers even once they’re in the company, says Marc Lore.

Lore recently posted a missing persons alert for his testicles.

BTW, I heard that Ellen Pao wants to get rid of Reddit’s urinals in men’s restrooms. Those are sexist. Ditto for the men’s restrooms. After all, men talk about work in there, and women are at a disadvantage not being in on the discussions that take place there.

I made that up. But the way things are going, that’s coming very, very soon. Don’t bet against it.

“Social media”? Now there’s a valuable service.

It sounds to me like Ellen Pao is just looking for an excuse to keep the compensation down for her employees, therefore leaving more for herself.

Pao is actually being very insulting to women. Her comments indicate that she believes women to be too weak and dumb to negotiate for their pay packages and benefits. Also, Reddit looks like a lousy place to work, since what you earn bears no relationship to your actual ability.

Also, according to Debbie, Pao has demonstrated an ability to spread her legs. This women seems to be projecting her own shortcoming on to others.

I LOVE the Golden Tampon Award! That is soooo apropos!

Yay, Feminism! Don’t you just love it? I’m tired of annoying present day Feminazis whinging about the tired, old, UNTRUE line that men get paid more than women. As long as the misnomer lives you’ll have retardo feminazis spewing it out!

This bint is so Feminazi, she not only had an affair on her husband (who is prolly as wimpy as they come…) but had the (her husband’s) cojones to sue the company because she is unprofessional & skanky. Yay, Feminism!!

It’s 100% apropos that uber-skank (and complete mental case) Vylie Virus labels herself as a Feminist! LOLOL! I have been out of the scene for almost 20 years and couldn’t be more proud to have seen what a fraud it was very early (in my existence). In Australia, they have an “actress” (I can’t even remember her name…Stacy something…) who is not only a big-mouthed nutter, but she’s a proud “Feminist” and she & Vylie Virus are always posing naked or topless at the drop of a hard-hat! Yay, feminism! An institution for nutter chicks if there ever was one!

Feminism is comedy gold in 2015. I am too far gone from the fraud to be angry about it. I love to see the idiocy in action because it means I can LOLOL at it and mock it to the Nth degree! And I do! 😀

If it were true that men are better at negotiations than women–and there’s no empirical evidence that this contention has any merit–then why would Ellen Pao be supporting Hillary Clinton for President? Because if the contention has merit, then Hillary Clinton must be, by Pao’s own version of reality, a poor negotiator when compared to any male candidate. Does Pao really want the US Government to give in to everything a male representative from some other nation is trying to negotiate with the USA? You can see the absurdity of Pao’s “logic,” if that were not already self-evident.

She is kind of unusual for a Chinaman. Most of them don’t get involved with this schtick. Too busy studying.

She’s also blown up Reddit by banning “offensive” speech (labeled “hate speech) on the site, which is supposed to be dedicated to, well, free speech.

In business as in politics, idiots hire bigger idiots, just to feel more important AND keep their job.

theShadow on May 28, 2015 at 10:01 pm

I speak from experience. I work with (and for) ‘redundant idiots’.
To expect anything more from them would be asking way too much.

theShadow on May 28, 2015 at 10:08 pm

If women get paid less than men (for whatever reason) but produce (at least) the same as men, why don’t all companies only hire women?

That companies don’t hire only women proves the insanity of all of this.

I_AM_ME on May 28, 2015 at 11:41 pm

Yes, these are strong, bold women. They are so strong that they are too weak to negotiate a starting salary.

Her Kung Pao chicken is awful! Just like her idiotic views it leaves a really bad taste in your mouth!

Ms. Pao says. “We want to make sure we maintain this level playing field.”

Over the years, I have found that the statement “level the playing field”, means nothing more than “level me”. That means me personally. It has held true in every instance. No whine, I would just reach deeper, work harder and wiser and overcome this b.s. No problem missy, or anyone else, if you aint got it, you aint got it.

Reddit Inc.’s interim chief executive, Ellen Pao, says that pay negotiations put women at a disadvantage because men negotiate harder than women. If a man said this, his head would roll. Figuratively, of course.

JeffT on May 29, 2015 at 4:52 pm

Interesting in that Pao essentially demanded special treatment because of her status as a female, and owing to her trading sex for a future promotion, and now she seeks to punish more capable/qualified people.

On the subject of pay “inequality,” there are valid reasons why women may be being paid less. Spend some time doing some research and you will find that it has nothing to do with their being female.

“. “People who perform the same should be paid the same,” Ms. Pao says. “We want to make sure we maintain this level playing field.”

Just because people do the same job, doesn’t mean their performance while doing said job,is the same.

The real gender gap is in inspirational ideas that lead to actual businesses.

It is a 100% free for all. Any one can compete. No bias is involved. You come up with the idea and it is yours.

You can’t blame the outcome on anything.

But the statistics show Asian and White males have the most winning track record.

Get over it. It is a fact.
