Steven Sotloff Story About Praying, Fasting on Yom Kippur is Fake, BS – Totally Debunked

By Debbie Schlussel

**** SCROLL DOWN FOR UPDATES ****

A number of people have sent me the phony story repeated all over the mainstream media claiming that ISIS’ leftist “Jewish” beheadee prayed and fasted on Yom Kippur while in captivity with ISIS. The story is completely false and unsubstantiated.

sotloffyemen

The story, originally published by left-wing, anti-Israel Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronot (or as a friend calls it, Idiot Ahronot), is based on the claims of an “anonymous” alleged friend of Sotloff’s who claims he/she/it was in ISIS captivity along with Sotloff. The portion of the dubious story that has now been repeated a gazillion times by the rest of the media is below. There are so many holes in the story, it would make a great colander for halal spaghetti dinner. Sadly, the story has been repeated far and wide by many Jews and Westerners who want to make this Islamopanderer and cheerleader for Islamic terrorists into a martyr for the Jewish people. He is and was no such thing, and, again, the story is bunk. But the mainstream and Jewish media have repeated the BS as fact all over the Net and it has taken on a life of its own.

A friend who was with Sotloff in captivity told Ynet’s sister-print publication Yedioth Aharonoth that Sotloff was Jewish – a fact he hid from his captors – and even managed to observe the Yom Kippur fast while in Islamic State captivity. “He told them he was sick and didn’t want to eat, even though we were served eggs that day,” the friend said. “He used to pray secretly in the direction of Jerusalem. He would see in which direction (his Muslim captors) were praying and then adjust the angle.”

*** UPDATE: But there are only a handful of documented cases of any hostages released/freed by ISIS (even for large amounts of ransom), except for Nicolas Henin, who now says he was held ISIS but says only that he was held with James Foley, NOT Steven Sotloff. He was held together with three other French journalists and they were all chained together for a large portion of that time. And while they’ve talked publicly about Foley being beaten, none has publicly stated anything about Sotloff. And it’s unlikely if they did so, they’d choose to be anonymous, since they haven’t been anonymous in their statements thus far about the rest of their experiences in ISIS captivity. There is absolutely no evidence that any of the very few hostages released by ISIS ever saw Steven Sotloff pray on Yom Kippur or do any of the things in the fairy tale story of an “anonymous source” quoted in Idiot Ahronot. END UPDATE *** But there are a lot of people who barely knew him trying to glom onto the story (see fake “Mossad agent” Gregg Roman, who told me both he and Sotloff were Mossad agents–not true–and who described Sotloff as “the Jewish Indiana Jones”–even more blatant baloney).

The same reporter for the same anti-Israel Israeli newspaper who wrote the phony baloney Yom Kippur story on Sotloff now has a story up about Sotloff’s self-proclaimed “heroic” left-wing friends (most of whom didn’t actually know Sotloff), including fake Mossad agent Gregg Roman (who barely knew Sotloff if at all). The reporter is clearly easily manipulated into fake “scoops” without any verification whatsoever, by people who are interested in rehabilitating Sotloff’s reputation.

Anyone who believes this fantastic fairy tale is an incredibly naive and easily duped fool who ignores the facts about Steven Sotloff. A number of people who’ve sent me the story are Jews who don’t want to face the facts that Sotloff was a documented lover of Islam and a cheerleader of Islamic “rebels” a/k/a terrorists of every dangerous stripe. They want to believe he died as a religious Jew, when he never ever was one and was a documented HAMAS and ISIS lover.

Many of Steven Sotloff’s friends and classmates from college have contacted me regarding how angry they are by this phony story because Steven Sotloff was a completely secular Jew, who barely knew Hebrew, much less the Yom Kippur prayers (which even many Orthodox Jews would not know by heart). There is no way he would know the prayers, much less which day it was on the Hebrew calendar to even know which day was Yom Kippur. He reveled in his apostasy, which is why he embraced Islam and deeply loved Islamic culture, according to all press people and friends of his on the ISIS trail. All of those who know him say he was more likely to be driving around and eating a bacon cheeeseburger on Yom Kippur than praying.

And all of those who knew him tell me that the reason these stories are now out there is that the media and some of Sotloff’s friends want to make him into a martyr, rather than what he was–a panderer to and cheerleader to Islamic terrorists–which makes his story and his beheading far less compelling and sympathetic.

Sotloff went to a Reform Temple, which he did not attend regularly. Anyone who knows anything about Judaism knows that Reform Jews are completely ignorant of Judaism. Most cannot read a word of Hebrew (which is why most of their abbreviated, hippie-style prayers are in English), and none can remember the Yom Kippur prayers by heart (heck, even the most religious Orthodox Jews don’t remember those prayers without a prayer book). Most do not even fast on Yom Kippur.

The story is highly phony–there isn’t a single shred of evidence to back it up–and not a thing that makes it believable. Moreover, even in the very unlikely event that the story is true (it isn’t) and that this guy finally “found G-d” when he knew death could be near, it makes no difference with regard to–nor does it negate–Sotloff’s long history of supporting HAMAS (while he was in college at Israel and held Israeli citizenship) and his history of supporting Shi’ite terrorists in Bahrain, Sunni Muslim Brotherhood terrorists in Egypt, Sunni Al-Qaeda terrorists in Libya, and Sunni ISIS and FSA terrorists in Syria and Iraq, all of which he did.

The story simply isn’t true, though, and it’s amazing that when people and the mainstream media want to promote and believe something, they’ll run with it, no matter how phony the story is and how thin the evidence (in this case, none) there is.

Anytime you see a story with the byline of Yitzhak Benhorin, the guy who wrote this fairy tale for Yediot Ahronot, you’ll know you can’t believe a word.

***

Much has also been made of Sotloff’s reported Israeli citizenship, but here’s a tip: Sotloff obtained citizenship before going to college there at the IDC (Interdisciplinary Center). He only lived there for college, from 2005-2008, during which his classmates all knew him as an anti-Israel left-winger and apologist for HAMAS. His classmate, Hillary Lynne Glaser, said he “hated Israel” (but not enough not to come visit ONCE for a friend’s wedding). Sotloff did NOT, by the way, ever serve in the IDF (the Israeli Defense Forces) as is required of all Jewish citizens, so he was a draft dodger.

After he left Israel in 2008, Sotloff lived FOR YEARS in Yemen, where all of his friends told the media, he “deeply loved the Islamic world.” It’s funny to read stories that claim Sotloff made “aliyah” to Israel. Aliyah is the Hebrew word for “going up.” It’s the term for Jews who move to Israel permanently, but Sotloff never did that. He left in 2008, which would make what he did “Yeridah” (going down), the term used for Jews who leave Israel.

Funny how Yediot Ahronot, which “reported” in the same story featuring the BS Sotloff Yom Kippur praying and fasting fairy tale, also claimed Sotloff made “aliyah” and didn’t point out the “yeridah” part.

**** UPDATE: To give you an idea of how easily duped people are by Idiot Ahronot’s phony story about Sotloff praying and fasting on Yom Kippur and how it’s taken on a life of its own, read this e-mail message I received this morning:

From: Joel Moskowitz yoel.moskowitz@gmail.com
Date: Thu, Sep 4, 2014 at 8:37 AM
Subject: Steve Sotloff
To: writedebbie@gmail.com

I don’t know you and now certainly don’t care to. What you are doing to Mr. Sotloff who died sanctifying God’s name is a disgrace to humanity. You are taking your advocacy of a just cause to the levels of the murderers you rail against. You should repent to God and his family before Yom Kippur.

Yoel (Joel) Moskowitz
yoel.moskowitz@gmail.com

Reality check: Sotloff didn’t die “sanctifying G-d’s name.” He died just after reading an anti-American propaganda statement ISIS forced him to read and which he did, even though he knew he was about to beheaded (his being killed is part of the statement he read). He died after YEARS of living in Yemen, where he “deeply loved Islam,” according to all of his friends’ accounts in the mainstream media. He died after years of apologism for HAMAS, the Muslim Brotherhood, Al-Qaeda, ISIS, and Hezbollah Shi’ites.

Sanctifying G-d’s name wasn’t involved. Unless you consider his own family’s statement through their Muslim spokesman in Arabic in which they said that Steven Sotloff died “as a martyr for allah.”

Got that?

Yes, the idea that Sotloff was some kind of double-agent is absurd. Even “agents” designated as patsies have to have some minimal level of intellectual capability. The evidence clearly demonstrates that Sotloff lack that minimal level.

Furthermore, I had read somewhere that Sotloff’s captors did not even know of his former “Jewish” background. All they knew was that he was an American who had converted to Islam. That is far more credible than this double-agent nonsense. That Sotloff was American was sufficient enough for those barbarians.

Ralph Adamo on September 5, 2014 at 3:29 pm

Even Caroline Glick in an op ed piece in the Jerusalem Post was a carrier of this virus. She said:
“Sotloff reportedly maintained faith with his Judaism in secret while in captivity. He refused food on Yom Kippur and secretly prayed toward Jerusalem.
In so doing, he showed that the evil that controlled him physically, could not penetrate his soul. For this he died a Jewish hero.” Uhhhh no. Maybe there is a Hebrew word that is spelled h-e-r-o that means schmuck or low life or traitor.

M: “Even” Caroline Glick? She’s wrong on so much stuff it’s incredible anyone finds her credible on anything. She supported the Arab Spring before she was “against it” (John Kerry style). She supported Hezbollah supporters in Iran. And she backpedaled on pressuring AIPAC after reporting that AIPAC opposed legislation boycotting trade with Iran because then AIPAC and AIPAC groups paid her big bucks to speak. Cha-ching. Her claim to fame is that she was a negotiator on the disastrous Oslo Accords that resulted in the most violent period in Israeli history in terms of terrorist attacks on civilians. The empress wears no clothing. Time for people to face that fact about her. DS

    Predictions are a tough racket.
Many Jews thought Obama was handing them a silver lining with regime change in Syria. They were tragically wrong about the nature of endless potentialities for infighting in that arrangement as about so much else.
Still it’s long standing tepidity of criticism that’s often most telling.
AIPAC did ostensibly oppose Iranian diplomacy so everything is not as clear cut as all that. Unless you simply oppose them on principle regardless of strategic consequences but then that’s a luxury few can afford.

japple on September 5, 2014 at 7:35 pm

The Oslo accords were going ahead with or without Caroline Glick

japple on September 5, 2014 at 7:37 pm

None of that is true! Its apocryphal legend.

The greatest of Jewish martyrs – R. Akiva, when he was tortured to death by the Romans, died with the love of G-d on his lips.

Sotloff could not even bring himself to act as a Jew. And it only goes to show some people are desperate enough to believe anything they hear particularly things for which no real proof is offered.

You have to be reckless enough to arrange for yourself to fall into the hands of head-chopping Islamic terrorists. No sane Jew would have anything to do with them. But what Sotloff did was in character not for a Jew but for a zealous Muslim convert.

    Facts are stubborn things.

Well, what difference does it really make? Martyrs are made from all kinds of killings especially if others are involved; surely stupid media can be given a pass if Sotloff is being made into a martyr; he didn’t kill anyone, he was killed.

A lot of Jews joined the Stoloff is a hero crap because they wanted him to be a good Jew rather than the traitor and Jew hater that he was It’s hard for them to understand that any Jew can be as bad as the Jews worst enemies. So now, without any shred of evidence Soloff has become a Mossad agent working under cover.

Jerry G on September 5, 2014 at 6:07 pm

Debbie,

The real story is that this young man, an American, and Israeli, a journalist, a son, a grandson of. Holocaust survivor grandparents, of Jewish descent was viciously murdered and beheaded by a terrorist organization in a far away land where his family and friends can’t even retrieve his remains to have a proper gravesite for their dearly departed. It is an evil sick act that was broadcast for the world to see and it is shocking that this sick cancerous evil is spreading and growing . Have a heart and some respect for his family and friends for their loss. To have lived and survived attorcities during the holocaust, to have raised a grandson, then to have to witness this type of anti semitism and hatred for America and democracy and freedom must be heartbreaking for all Jews. For you to judge reform Jews as inferior to other types of Jews, or whether someone was fasting during Yom Kippur, shows you have no heart or sense of priorities.in my opinion. Give it a rest already if you truly do support Israel, as the name of the group suggests.

        Sotloff was a complete nobody.
The only reason his death is any more notable than any of the thousands of others who have been murdered in that region is that he was an American citizen.

Probably he should have kept his moderate ideas about Islam in the US where they still belong for the moment with the rest of the “reform” Jews.
Do I feel sorry for him. No I feel sorry for the innocent victims of jihadi groups he was cheer leading for.

If life is precious why don’t you try using your head before you lose it too.

        So do I!

But I believe in setting my face against those who are evil and I take pleasure in seeing the downfall of the wicked.

Sotloff hung out with a bad crowd and he fully deserved his fate. We’re not talking about an innocent kidnapped person who through no fault of his own, gets taken by people who seek his life.

We’re talking about someone who loved Islamic terrorists, advocated for them and tried to make them look good. You don’t want to face who Sotloff was.

A righteous person doesn’t whitewash evil; he fights it and his own life is an example to others on virtuous conduct. Sotloff was the exact opposite in every way imaginable and wasn’t a Jewish hero. Don’t make him out to be someone he wasn’t.

The truth needs to be told.

What difference does it make? He was a journalist who got beheaded. Whether he was an observant Jew or an apostate, he didn’t deserve it, and it’s wrong to gloat about such a horrible murder. Besides, even if he kissed Muslims’ butts and was anti-Israel, he was still better than 1000 ISIS a*sholes.

Why are you, the descendant of a Jewish priest, making excuses for him? This is exactly what G-d forbids you to do.

NormanF on September 5, 2014 at 8:47 pm

So what’s the salient point here? That misguided leftist (yeah, redundant, I know) Islamonazi sympathizers can end up on YouTube kneeling before Ahmed and his carving knife? I would think such a revelation would only exacerbate the left’s frustration that these beheadings are destroying their “Religion of Peace” narrative. In that light, it’s counterproductive for Israel and the US conservative media to portray these liberal victims as other than what they are if they want the left to wake up to Islamonazis.

From Bergdahl to these jokers I tell you I’m getting pretty sick of the Islam hybrid theory protégés Obama’s little Arab Spring fiasco keeps coughing up in front the world media sideshow.

japple on September 5, 2014 at 7:55 pm

A good Jew does not volunteer to promote the most evil people on the planet, isn’t in love with Islam and doesn’t travel to places where they hate the Jews and Israel – which is true of the Muslim World. Steve Sotloff did every single one of those things and there is no record of him EVER reciting the Shema when he died – which is the central credo of the Jewish faith. Even Jews who know little about Judaism understand its importance. On the other hand, Sotloff spurned it and wanted nothing to do with the Jews and Israel.

And given how he lived his life, a secular Jew in Israel who lives on a kibbutz and eats pork is already far more of a committed Jew than Sotloff will be. The reason for that is the Jew in Israel is at worst guilty of violating a dietary rule. Sotloff on the other hand was an evangelist for the kind of folks who seek the death of every Jew on earth.

Debbie can forgive that pork-eating Israel Jew; his heart is in the right place and his children will grow up Jewish. She can’t forgive Sotloff for turning back on G-d and the Jewish people. After all as she rightly wrote, his own family said he died for Allah.

That makes all the difference in the world.

NormanF on September 5, 2014 at 8:31 pm

Norman, you are dealing with “Values Free” people. It makes no difference that Steven Sotloff turned his back on Judaism and Jews to such people. Mr. Sotloff in fact embraced Islam and those Moslems who actively seek to harm others. Sympathy for such terrorist lovers is in itself offensive. Those who cry that one should not be judgmental in such cases are themselves judging Steve Sotloff’s choices to be inconsequential. They are the enablers of evil.

    Worry01 on September 5, 2014 at 8:49 pm

Worry,

Exactly!

We need to be more judgmental but we live in a time where qualities like common sense and universal morality are frowned upon.

Sotloff is a Rorschach Test and it all depends on how you really see him. Debbie wanted to make it clear for the record the stories circulating about him being a faithful Jew come after the fact and have no basis whatsoever in reality.

You’re spot on when you write gullible people who take that at face value are enablers of evil. And bottom line – Sotloff WAS evil and he won’t be missed.

NormanF on September 5, 2014 at 9:05 pm

Next they’ll be saying he came from “Planet Claire”, where they ‘have pink air/all the trees are red/no one ever dies there/no one has a head’!

You know, getting by the Moooooooslims is hard enough but before one gets to those screwy demons, one must get thru’ the JINO Jews who hate Judaism. Not helpful to we Christians who love Israel and Jews. They get in our way!

Look at the weird beard. That screams Islam. And he was beheaded just the same. He could easily get over his Judaism but true to form the dirty Mooooooolims never could. They have much in common with Alice’s Red Queen!

It’s not getting better. I’m gonna take a chance here because I don’t know what you all said about that missing Malaysian airplane but I not ONCE believed it went down in the ocean by happenstance. Not after all I learned here. And no, I am not with retardo MSNBC thinking it went in a fricken’ Black Hole. I know all the leaps and bounds Islam has made in double-time since 9/11. I knew once no debris was found (early in mis-investigation) that Islam was winning while the world had it’s thumbs crammed in it’s tuchis all bewildered and sh**.

But more on that later…

It’s part of the loathsome, p.c./hippie/yippie/baby-boomer, sanctimonious, posturing/liberalism where “disadvantaged” (read: dark-skinned people who aren’t as smart as us and deserve our pandering, over-praisng, soft racism) are “served” by we ugly descendants and beneficiaries of historical evil, white racism.

Like when otherwise intelligent people volunteer their young adult children to go to hellholes all around the world, then aren’t particularly outraged when their children are murdered, raped or both. They see it as a sort of tribute or sacrifice to the gods of humanistic relativism. Sickening and pathetic.

They’re flaming a-holes and deserve what they get as all of the sane and rational people on this board and everywhere can plainly see and point out.

I have four kids, three of whom are grown, and all of them including my nine year-old know better than to knowingly go into any area or milieu dominated by people who possib;y could harbor hostility toward them.

DS_ROCKS! on September 6, 2014 at 1:01 am

“They see it as a sort of tribute or sacrifice to the gods of humanistic relativism. Sickening and pathetic.” – DS_ROCKS!

That is an extremely profound statement, sir. And it jibes perfectly with your closing remarks. EXACTLY!!! These SAME people would tell their children NOT to go down a certain block on the way to the store to buy milk and bread. If there is a block or area of the neighborhood to be avoided, they’ll tell the kid to go around, take another way.

But when they see a chance for moral relativism, they do what you described in your post.

And Debbie, after you posted your first report on this, I was at the local store on Meadowlands Parkway here in Secaucus. It’s closer than walking to town, there are certain things I can pick up there. Not only has this story swept through the internet like wildfire, but there it was on the FRONT PAGE of one of NY’s two major newspapers. Forget if it was the Post or the News, but it was something lauding him for staying “true to his faith.”

All I could do was shake my head, and . . .

lament our fate a little more.

Nice to see Skunky around. I’m looking forward to more of her commentary, as she settles back in. Skunky, of your avatars I’ve seen in my 20 months here, I like this one the best.

I’d call it belief from authority.

Its the oldest fallacy of all. Just because esteemed people say something is true doesn’t mean it is.

People never ask themselves, if Sotloff was the kind of Jew the fashionable conventional wisdom holds him to be, how come he never made a life for himself in Israel?

Very few people making chasing Islamic terrorists around their career. That is far more significant than whether he fasted on Yom Kippur and prayed as a Jew.

How his life brutally ended should serve as a warning to all of us.

Obviously he was, and I think the beheading was a sham and probably him martyr-ing himself for Islam. Hang with scum, die like scum. Good riddance, traitor.

I’m glad I figured it out but it was still a bummer to realize. At the time I was just glad I woke up and saw the truth of Libtards so it was disappointing to see Conservatives as lost as well. I thought I was among the righteous.

But now I am so much more learned…

This is based on the old adage, if you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas.

If you lie down with Islam,

“Poetic Justice”
noun
1) The rewarding of virtue and the punishing of vice in a manner that is particularly and often ironically fitting. 2) The fact of experiencing a fitting or deserved retribution for one’s actions.

Mike on September 6, 2014 at 12:36 pm

Sotloff was a martyr for Islam.
Can’t understand why compassionate souls like Liz want to take that away from him unless they’re confused or maybe they want something similar for the rest of us.

japple on September 6, 2014 at 12:47 pm

That’s it in a nutshell, japple. And that’s pretty sick. Get your head cut off, show how great our “religion” is.

ROTFLMAO!!!

Sick, mentally ill, just like liberals.

Alfredo from Puerto Rico on September 6, 2014 at 1:08 pm

    I agree Alfredo.
As somebody once said Islam is all about infiltration. Leftists are also about that but finally they’ve met their match.

japple on September 6, 2014 at 2:47 pm

That’s right, the “met their match” part. There is nothing so attractive to the human species as that which masquerades as a religion, or something “spiritual.” Americans love to say “I’m a very spiritual person” and “I know a lot of spiritual people.” Islam is the latest “toy religion” for many Americans.

It is also not only a match for leftists, but the most powerful and fearsome “toy religion” in the world. It is chewing up nations from within, especially in Africa, at an alarming rate, this beautiful religion of peace.

I have never gotten a straight answer out of a Muslim about specific aspects of doctrine, nothing on beliefs. Similarly when I ask about them believing in Jesus as a Prophet. Nothing but wry grins, and something about how complicated it all is to explain.

They all love to talk about how Islam is beautiful. In what way? Inquiring minds want to know.

JUST TELL ME ONE THING SPECIFICALLY!!!

72 virgins and a place inside Small World at Disneyworld doesn’t count. Try again.

Alfredo from Puerto Rico on September 6, 2014 at 3:16 pm

“Similarly when I ask about them believing in Jesus as a Prophet. Nothing but wry grins”

You know it’s a funny thing Alfredo I just got a lie and a quick change of subject from one of my Muslim buddies.
It usually doesn’t take long to work out this is not an open an honest belief system but like a used car salesman they’re always trying to make a sale.
Also they get rewards in Allah’s bordello for every person they bring to Islam I was told by one sharia creep recruiter.
It would just be another creepy little death cult if it wasn’t for the fact they’re supposed to kill anybody who wants to leave.

If you keep asking enough questions you know you aren’t going to like the answers but unfortunately not many westerners are keen on applying the same scepticism they apply to their own beliefs to their fuzzy little Muhammadan friends.
That’s because most already sort of know the answers they’re just hoping they’ll never really have to find out.

japple on September 7, 2014 at 9:23 am

The answer is Jesus was supposed to be a prophet in the sense that his sole purpose was to foretell the coming of Muhammad. No pun intended.
Christians supposedly don’t know that because their scriptures were corrupted to make Muhammad look bad.

You can see why they might not want to be open and transparent right off the bat.

To quote the immortal words of Johnny Nash, 1972, . . .

I can see all obstacles in my way,
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind, . . .”

Thanks so much, japple, wisdom and information for the ages, and I guess japple got it straight from the horse’s mouth, a noble Muslim.

. . . “to make Muhammad look bad.”

Uhhhhhhhh, kind of like how Demi Lovato unfriended Selena Gomez because she didn’t like her constantly going back to Justin Bieber? Look bad? Like that?

Or like how Alec Baldwin always likes to make it look like the paparazzi pick on him worse than other celebs?

Hmmmmmmmm, which kind of ‘look bad’ is it? What kind did those fierce, bad, snarling, yowling Christians, the true scourge religion of civilization, what kind of ‘look bad’ did they perpetrate on poor, downtrodden, helpless Muhammad?

          ROTFLMAO!!!

Alfredo from Puerto Rico on September 7, 2014 at 11:05 pm

Islam is not a religion.

Which is why people treat it with a deference and respect they would never accord to Christianity.

And of course being shown how you can lose your head if you insult it, is all the incentive needed to be malleable dhimmis.

Small Correction: Didier François, a French journalist who was kidnapped by IS & released with 3 other French journalists after large ransoms were paid, publicly stated that he recognized Foley’s killer from his time in captivity. Two Spanish journalists were also kidnapped by IS and released after a large ransom.

NB: Your are correct. There were four French journalists released after large ransom was paid, but while they’ve been quite public on their experiences in captivity with ISIS and discussing what happened to James Foley, none has ever said anything about Sotloff on Yom Kippur. And there would be no reason for any of them to insist on anonymity just for that fairy tale story reported by Yediot Ahronot. See the update in this piece. DS

It was very clear from the starts that the reports about his Judaism were fake BS. How could someone who is clearly muslim in all his actions be jewsih anyway? The more involved question is weather the beheadings were real or staged.

@ yohevet. How can you accuse someone of being “filthy and foulmouthed” when you yourself are attacking her with filth? After that, you have no credibility whatsoever. Obviously Debbie is absolutely correct in raising doubts about Sotloff’s judaism. His whole family are probably converts, he was a mentally ill, deranged hater of israel and supporter of islamic terrorism, why else would he traveled to all those regions??

And before calling some crazy lunatic a Jew, show at least one piece of evidence that he was Jewish! Guess what – there is none. While there is plenty of evidence that he was a muslim, from his own, his families statements, his photos in muslim attire, etc.

PS Being Jewish is not having one distant Jewish relative, or a family which converted by a fake Reform conversion, or liking gafilte fish. The fundamental and necessary condition for being Jewish is supporting your people and nation, and he could not even fulfill this condition. So there is absolutely no reason for him to be considered Jewish

samr on September 7, 2014 at 4:30 pm

The fundamental and necessary condition for being Jewish is supporting your people and nation

I don’t think that’s true. AFAIK, the condition for being a Jew is a maternal bloodline or conversion, but the latter doesn’t qualify you for votoxemship (I’m leaving this typo in because it’s bizarre how that came out instead of “citizenship.” Although now I see that those letters are adjacent, so my home position must have been shifted. lol) in Israel.

    DS_ROCKS! on September 7, 2014 at 8:11 pm

Well, even if you meet one of those conditions, they still wouldn’t give you Israeli citizenship unless you also express your allegiance to israel. In order to obtain Israeli citizenship a Jew must “express his desire to settle in Israel,” and the citizenship can be denied if the government has reason to believe the person is engaging in “activity directed against the Jewish people” or “is likely to endanger public health or the security of the State.” Also, the State of Israel recognizes people who have undergone Orthodox conversion as Jews, so that Reform and other silly processes are not accepted.

So clearly, someone with ambiguous family history, who is in constant contact with various terrorist groups, supports them and is anti-israel could not possibly be accepted even by israel as a jew. They say he was a citizen, which is simply more proof that he was a faker, pretended and lied to get that citizenship (which is not a good news for israel’s security if they were beguiled by someone like him, which, however, doesn’t change the fact that if he was honest they would not consider him jewish enough to be a citizen)

samr on September 7, 2014 at 10:47 pm

samr, you do know how many anti-Israel Jews there are in Israel, don’t you?

DSR is correct regarding what is a Jew. What is unfortunately underappreciated is that a Jew needn’t be supported when he helps the enemy. I do not know if Sotloff’s conversion to Islam takes aways his Judaism, but I do know that, given his actions in Israel, we should cheer his death. Indeed, it would have been preferable for Jews to have killed him.

skzion on September 9, 2014 at 5:01 am

One can be a Zionist Muslim.

There’s just no evidence to indicate Sotloff was that rare bird of a feather.

You will search in vain for articles by him defending Israel. That’s the best reproof to those who claim he died a good Jew.

And some things in this world are mutually exclusive as with folks who choose to hang out of their own free will with Islamic terrorists.

That was the real Steven Sotloff.

NormanF on September 7, 2014 at 11:09 pm

Some time back I used the expression “death Cult” to describe how I saw Islam. I notice that the prime minister of my country,Tony Abbott now uses this term to describe the IS .It is and always will be my own belief that the cult known to the world as islam is not a religion in the sense that we understand Judaism and it’s worship of the deity and it’s guidance towards life, but simply a cult which sees death as a means to an end.As long as it’s someone elses death though. If i were a truley religious person i would say that the followers of this death cult are in fact in the thrall of satan . Not since the days of the nazis have we seen such political handwringing while nonbelievers of the death cults lies have been butchered or in the case of children ,sold in sexual slavery,a favorite activity of the cultists as noted for several hundred years, may their i9nnocent souls be shown mercy. .

Aron B on September 8, 2014 at 3:41 am

If you were an atheist you’d be inclined to see the religion as a cynical exercise in power politics.
That kind of thinking would you get you into trouble because countries like Iran are prepared to accept their own extinction if it accomplishes their national jihad objectives.
The glorification of martyrdom means that many Muslims are quite happy to travel to foreign countries for the privilege of blowing themselves up.
That’s what makes it a death cult.
Cynical manipulation is no doubt there but that doesn’t really matter because it can always be attributed to the failings of a particular group or nation.

japple on September 8, 2014 at 9:50 am

Now the family is claiming Sotloff was sold to ISIS by the “moderate” Syrian rebels.

Huh? That’s even less believable than its claim he died a faithful Jew. They just make things up as they go along.

But it does illustrate the notion that Islamic terrorists differ in the philosophy and aims is pure fiction. No difference between the so called Syrian Free Army and ISIS and if Sotloff was naive enough to believe one was kinder and gentler than another, it goes to show also how little he knew of the Muslim World in which he had lived for years.

NormanF on September 9, 2014 at 7:06 am

skzion: DSR is correct regarding what is a Jew

I have difficult time seeing how he can be right. He said that “conversion” means being jewish, but who exactly did the conversion? Is some hippie “rabbi” from the Reform movement performing the “conversion” qualifies as a real thing? I am sure most Rabbis would not consider that legit. So we have to be careful with the idea tat “conversion” immediately means being jewish.

The only legit process is the Orthodox one, which is the closest to the way it has been done for thousands of years. Otherwise the idea of being Jewish will become completely meaningless. Do we want females wearing cipas, talit, being Rabbis, others believing in the Trinity as an integral part of judasim, perhaps we can introduce Muhamad into judaism as well, etc etc. As you can see it’s a very dangerous slippery slope that leads to complete destruction of Judaism.

samr on September 9, 2014 at 12:54 pm

skzion: DSR is correct regarding what is a Jew

Continued:

In regard to maternity: of course religiously that is true, but how do we know that, say Sotloff’s mother, is a real Jew in accordance with Orthodox standards and not someone who herself converted by a fake Reform process?? As you can see, identifying someone as Jewish is much harder that just “maternity” and “conversion”, as those two concepts are not easily verified to be legit in many cases. She may be a nice person and all (and if what happened to her son is real, then obviously we send her our condolences) but some questions are a matter of principle

samr on September 9, 2014 at 12:57 pm

samr, your points are well taken. I agree that only Orthodox conversions are valid. AND, such conversions DO require particular beliefs.

But unless you know otherwise, Sotloff is a Jew by heredity. What I was trying to emphasize was that one can grant that someone is a Jew but still praise said Jew’s killing

skzion on September 9, 2014 at 2:10 pm

skzion: But unless you know otherwise, Sotloff is a Jew by heredity

I prefer to think of it in terms of “not a jew until proven to be one”, and not “a jew until proven not to be one”, since the first approach means that we can discard lots of garbage which claims to be jewish for purposes of material gain, propaganda, etc, but are not jewish in reality.

So I like to see some real prove first that he was “a Jew by heredity”; then and only then will I accept him as such.

Lets remember that ISIL’s goal is to spread fear and propaganda, and the natural targets are USA, Britain and Israel; they did the american, a british is on the way, and if they could not find a real jew to execute, they would have to find a fake one. And that’s exactly what is happening in this particular case, at least it seems like it to me

samr on September 9, 2014 at 5:07 pm

Again, samr, you make a good point. I see your strategy. We can’t have our own facts, but we needn’t begin with the null hypothesis that one who proclaims himself a Jew is (Halachically) a Jew.

skzion on September 10, 2014 at 3:50 am

All this fuss over beheading an uber-lib journalist. Makes me think ISIS is like a broken clock; it’s right twice a day.

Heck! The Christians used to burn Jews at the stake and here we are all worked up over a little beheading.

==================================

Archer: “You may either have your head cut off, or be burned at the stake!” (chuckles)
Larry: “Cut my head off!”
Curly: “Not me, I’d rather be burned at the stake!”
Larry: “Why?”
Curly: “A hot steak is better than a cold chop! Nyuk! Nyuk! Nyuk! Nyuk!” *BONK*
