Comic Book Sad Sign of Times: Zeta Male Archie Picks the Rich Sugar Mommy, Kept Man

By Debbie Schlussel

Yes, Archie marries Veronica, the rich sugar mommy.  And not Betty, a wife whom he can support and take care of.  Why are we surprised?

05_Flatbed_2 - AUGUST

This is the new dominant male in America’s younger generation–the zeta male slacker boy, whose wife has the money, the job, or both–and definitely the power and masculinity in the relationship.

Even though this big pop culture story is confined to the comic books, it’s a sign of the times.  The comic book comes out at the end of August, the start of a six-issue story that fast forwards a few years with Archie picking Veronica over Betty and marrying her. As an Archie fan and comic book collector, in the past, I would have thought a cad, like Reggie, would marry Veronica, because only cads and jerks want to be kept men. But not any more. Now, everyone is doing it.

househusbands

Lou Zers  (Two Round Objets D’Art Missing)

Guys don’t want to be the man, these days.  The alpha female is the wage earner, and guys are the slacker boys.  Yes, the new “male” is the Zeta Male. It’s even prevalent in so-called conservatism where two of the most prominent people are 1) a selfish quitter Governor, whose husband is Mr. Mom and Mr. Grandmom, giving up his masculine job so she could pursue her career, and she is the one who’s now earning the big bucks; and 2) a commentator whose husband gave up his career for hers, and he’s Mr. Mom while she earns the big bucks and he stays at home (while this person attacked parents for “warehousing” their kids in daycare, in defending Sarah Palin she bragged that she reads her kids bedtime stories over a cellphone while getting on planes–nice).

And now FOX Reality Channel has a new show, called, “House Husbands of Hollywood,” which has the tag lines, “Meet the Home Boys” and “A New Family Arrangement.”  The show’s website has household tips from these man-wives on how to keep the house clean for their wives and make lunch for the kids.  Sadly, it isn’t new.  And it’s not a passing trend, either.  It’s becoming the status quo.  Yup, as I’ve noted before, the alpha male is dead.  And that means a trip toward a matriarchy, which never ends well.

This is the new paradigm.  Men can feel comfortable being chicks.  And Archie can laze around and be a kept man by Veronica.  And you know what that means?  The chick with all that Lodge money is gonna be the man in the relationship.  Like many of the other Mr. Moms in America, Archie is now peckerless . . . checked the testicles at the door.  A man-chick.

Oh, sure, they’ll probably give Archie some lofty-sounding career to pretend at.  But the bottom line is Veronica Lodge’s money.  He chose to go with the one who’ll fund him and his lifestyle nicely, and not the woman with whom he could actually be the alpha male and exhibit his masculinity.

Archie writer Michael Uslan is likening this to the Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston triangle.  So, uh, when do they adopt the United Nations and say, “We’re canceling our wedding until gay people can marry?”

Don’t bet against lefty stuff like that in Archie either.  We’re living in a left-wing world, where conservatives embrace faux conservatives who live like liberals.  And Archie is just reflecting that.

(Can’t wait to read the absurdity.  I’m sure it’ll be the comic book version of “Mad Men” hijinks.)

Even Jughead is upset by this.  And who can blame him?

Deb, the only jughegads are those who work for Archie Comics!

Dear Mr. Porrazzo: What’s wrong with working for Archie Comics?

      Miranda Rose Smith.

Dang…this really messed my day up!

I was a voracious reader when young, (still am) and the only comic books I would buy now and then were the Archie series…

For me it really is disgusting to what they are doing to a lot of comic book characters in the last few years…guess I should have figured even these would go the wussy way so-called PC way.

As Petula Clark used to sing…’It’s a Sign of the Times’…

Btw Debbie…I love your Palin reference…I couldn’t agree more…now give me hint on who the commentator is you are talking about…there are sooo many!

Diamond Girl on August 19, 2009 at 3:33 pm

Come on now Debbie…rich girls need love too! Like you, I used to love Archie comics when I was a kid. Betty was nice and cute, but I liked Veronica Lodge better…she had more of an “edge” to her. However, given my own rather volatile dating history with spoiled Daddy’s girls like Veronica, you may be right….marrying a “Betty” may be the best way to go!

JibberJabber on August 19, 2009 at 3:44 pm

Let me get this straight…

Archie has been courting Betty and Veronica for what, 50 years and everyone’s upset that he finally picks one? Who cares and why? If Archie picked Betty, then some blogger’s gonna say that Archie only cares about a woman’s beauty and not her intelligence.

You go Archie! You da man and you can pick any woman for any reason.

[2) a commentator whose husband gave up his career for hers, and he’s Mr. Mom while she earns the big bucks and he stays at home (in defending Sarah Palin, she bragged that she reads her kids bedtime stories over a cellphone–nice).]

Is this commentator full of Hotair?:)

BTW Debs, does this new blogsite have codes we can use for fonts, emoticons etc.,?

NB: Will look into the codes for that. I know that some spammers have used emoticons on this site, so it must be possible. If and when I find out, maybe I’ll post about it. Thanks for asking. DS

I feel so bad for Betty! She is the archetype of the “good girl”. Archie went for the wealthy brunette. I predict this marriage will not take place and that Archie will have a change of heart.

JulieJ on August 19, 2009 at 4:02 pm

Many men secretly enjoy being dominated by women. Indeed, it isn’t really a secret at all. Read http://www.sissify.com or the web site of the “De-Male Society.” They’re eye-opening — and not for G-rated audiences. Common as this syndrome is, it goes against the grain of human evolution.

To me, such men look silly and ridiculous. I say: “Fellas, grow a pair.” Men should dominate.

Realist on August 19, 2009 at 4:07 pm

The cover is an obvious head-fake and Archie will end up with Betty in the story.

luagha on August 19, 2009 at 4:33 pm

Does Archie actually become a neutered “House Husband?” Or does he remain active and NOT become a “slacker?”

I know a few body builders and musicians whose wives have jobs without loss of manhood.

I’d quit my (ugh!)dayjob if playing drums paid better.

My favorite comics were: SGT Rock, SGT Fury and His Howling Commandos, Ironman and Silver Surfer.

Sam Adams on August 19, 2009 at 4:37 pm

Speaking of peckerless men, Nivea for men shows a man shaving his chest in recent ads.

Kirk on August 19, 2009 at 4:38 pm

I haven’t kept up with Archie comics for many years. I was suprised that you would comment about him giving up his “masculinity,” I was never under the impression that he had much to give up to begin with. I can picture Jughead being the big winner and going on to live happily ever after with Betty while Archie’s life implodes as the lapdog of Veronicas ending in a messy divorce that leaves him with nothing but child support for children he is not sure belong to him.

I also mean Miranda Rose Smith.

Debbie should go ahead and expose this fraud commentator, A little bird told me that me that this “Conservative” commentator actually was a Liberal who worked for one of the most liberal senators in NJ and figured out how lucaritve it is to be a faux conservative. She needs to be called out, she’s in the same vein as Sean “My buddy hal from North Bergen” Hannity.

Dirtyleb on August 19, 2009 at 4:53 pm

It’s a freakin’ comic book! Who cares? You’re worried about how Jughead feels?! I wonder how Hotdog will be affected…

Richard on August 19, 2009 at 5:12 pm

Ummm… this is a comic book.

I think conservatives read wayyy too much into just about everything these days. Take a vacation, it will do you some good.

Jambo on August 19, 2009 at 6:18 pm

Archie DOESN’T become a slacker!

Veronica’s Father is a big-wig with Multi-Nation United. He get’s Archie a job with MNU and things get REALLY interesting.

Sam Adams on August 19, 2009 at 7:11 pm

I would love to marry Debbie.

I’m seroius.

Squirrel3D on August 19, 2009 at 9:41 pm

Dear Ms. Schlussel: Wasn’t it quite common, in the Jewish shtetels of pre-Holocaust Eastern Europe, for a yeshiva bocher to marry a girl whose parents could support him while he studied Torah? It was also common, I believe, for the wife to keep a shop so that her husband could study Torah. Being supported by your wife was not invented by 21st century American zeta males.
Maybe placid old Jughead will marry Betty and they’ll live happly ever after while jealous Veronia keeps Archie on a very short leash.

MRS: Actually, that was quite uncommon and statistically very rare. Most European Jewish men (even religious ones) earned a living, while their wives raised kids, cooked and took care of the household. But thanks for trying to disagree with me and defaming Judaism (of which you are a devout member and should, therefore, know better) in the process. Additionally, as you’ll note, my article was not about ancient Judaism–a religion in America today, which has statistically fewer of these Mr. Mom marriages than the general population. It was about Archie comics (Archie Andrews and Veronica Lodge–not Jews) and about American society. Too bad you had to interject irrelevant religion and false information into it. DS

Miranda Rose Smith on August 20, 2009 at 2:14 am

Dear Ms. Schlussel: I was under the impression that it was quite common, in the shtetels, for a wife to keep a shop so that her husband could learn. Even if the information is inaccurate, how is that “defaming Judaism?” I merely wanted to point out that 21st century zeta males are not the only men ever to be supported by their wives. I admit its much more commendable to support a man while he studies Torah than to support a man while he studies body-building.

Miranda Rose Smoth on August 20, 2009 at 5:39 am

OOPS!!!!It should be, of course, Miranda Rose Smith.

Miranda Rose Smith on August 20, 2009 at 6:30 am

Maybe Archie is planning to murder Veronica? The history of crime is full of men who married rich women for precisely that reason. Does the name George Joseph Smith ring a bell?

Miranda Rose Smoth on August 20, 2009 at 5:54 am

OOPS!!!! I mean Miranda Rose Smith.

Miranda Rose Smith on August 20, 2009 at 6:36 am

Eh, I would not read too much into this-Archie always struck me as an idiot

mindy abraham on August 20, 2009 at 6:37 am

Deb, seeing that poster for the Fox Reality Channel (WTF?!?!?!), makes me want to make this comparison

You know in 1975 there was something like 44 game shows on in one capacity or another…

Whether established hits like Hollywood Squares, Match Game, The Price Is Right, Let’s Make A Deal

Or one season affairs like The Diamond Head Game (Which Bob Eubanks called the biggest bunch of **** he’s ever done)

Or shows debuting at the time like Cross-Wits (lasted 5 years) or a little show called Wheel of Fortune…

Or sleeper hits like Sports Challenge (hosted by Mr. OH MY himself Dick Enberg) or The New Treasure Hunt (which some call the precursor to Deal or No Deal and the show that made Geoff Edwards a star, though I myself wold call it Let’s Make a Deal without the costumes)

They were there. In some cases we were entertained and we played along. But one injustice in 1975 took place when feminist NBC program boss Lin Bolen took Art Fleming’s version of Jeopardy! off the air. That same year there was a once per week nighttime version of Jeopardy (yes before crazy Canuck Alex Trebek) where the winner of the match picked from 30 numbers on the board to win a bonus prize…up to $25,000 cash. Now $25K was big money back in the day…take it from these Treasure Hunt big winners…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=in9tezK8ns4&feature=PlayList&p=AA4CB5C97C9195C2&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=13

Back then people complained about there being way too many game shows. If you ask me THERE ARE WAY TOO MANY COURT SHOWS AND SO-CALLED REALITY SHOWS ON THE AIR. And the person who came up with Fox Reality Channel…NEEDS A LOBOTOMY!

Bob Porrazzo on August 20, 2009 at 8:01 am

This would go along the same line as your article on the female superheros a while back. The comic industry is “butching” them up while making Archie a weenie. Heaven help us.

Miz T on August 20, 2009 at 8:39 am

I never read Archie as a comic book. I don’t care much. Don’t despair Debbie I think Archie has something else for Veronica. From the Toadies: Possum Kingdom….

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jo6UWwCRpH8

Otherwise let’s invade Archie’s ipod and put in some tunes. It may not be too late. This boy needs some anger. Hehehe.

Three Days Grace…”I Hate Everything About You”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1t9K9rM1SVE&NR=1
The Offspring…”Self Esteem”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kIZeVoRBuU
Puddle of Mudd…”She Hates Me”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKWWyEP7Xaw

Or maybe he drops the proposal to Veronica and goes and proposes to Jughead. The would fit the liberal agenda.

CaliforniaScreaming on August 20, 2009 at 11:30 am

No. MOOSE proposes to REGGIE would be the liberal agenda.

Miranda Rose Smith on August 21, 2009 at 1:35 am

Too much estrogen in the environment. Even man boobs are now socially acceptable.

JohN HENRY on August 20, 2009 at 2:27 pm

Hi Debbie-

Don’t you know you should never judge a comic book by its cover? I’ve been a long time admirer of your writing, but you are off-base here. The “Archie Marries” storyline celebrates the event of Archie Comics #600, and it is only part one of a six issue story. I can assure you, there are plenty of twists in store. Can I request that you wait until the series is completed, then do a write up on it? You might be pleasantly surprised. And as someone who has occasionally worked for Archie Comics over the years, I can tell poster Bob Porrazzo that the people at Archie Comics are very nice and anything but jugheads!

Batton Lash on August 20, 2009 at 4:35 pm

If the economic milieu was the same as it was in the ’60s, maybe, Debbie, but it ain’t. I mean, look at yourself; you’re a lawyer! By your reasoning, you’re part of the problem of women taking on “manly” roles (and jobs) and thus “emasculating” them, indirectly, at least. The fact is, while the feminization of culture has definitely become pervasive, it’s not the fault of men staying at home, but rather that is a by-product of the vast social engineering campaign of liberal boomer legislators, educators and judges. The rape of the American industrial complex has left a dearth of blue collar jobs for men to have a viable, decent, well-paying career that can support a family. I love you, Debbie, but this is one area where you’re way off the mark.

Archi is not a Zeta male. This article and many others written by the mainstream media have not one clue about what a zeta male is. A true zeta male shuns the gender role of provider/protector and would NEVER even date a western woman long term let alone marry one. Zeta males are anything but kept men. I suggest the author do some digging around and educate herself a little before using a word in a piece like this.

Bill on February 16, 2012 at 10:42 pm

Women fought so hard for equality, for the right to choose whether to be a housewife or breadwinner. Looks like they are finally getting it. Instead of celebrating it, you are calling men “slackers” for being in support roles to the wives who wanted to be in the lead. That’s too bad. It reminds me of the way men used to belittle housewives by assuming they sit around all day. I say there is nothing wrong with women who want the alpha role and men who like alpha women. Both sexes are lucky to have the choice.
