Black Kid Admitted to All 8 Ivy League Schools Isn’t What Media Claims

By Debbie Schlussel

** SCROLL DOWN FOR UPDATE/CORRECTION **

Most mainstream media outlets are gushing and slobbering over Kwasi Enin, a Long Island “first-generation American,” who was admitted into all eight Ivy League schools, including Harvard. The feat is extremely rare and we are being told what a genius this kid is. Well, given that, you’d think this guy is the valedictorian of his class and that he scored in the top percentile of the SATs, right?

quasienin

WRONG. In fact, Enin ranks number 11 in his class at William Floyd, a public school on Long Island. And he only scored in the 99th percentile of Blacks on the SATs, but not in that percentile, when he’s compared to everyone else. And that’s the thing. This guy is very smart, but he’s only a “genius” when he’s compared to other Black people. If there were no affirmative action–and he was compared to everyone else–he probably wouldn’t have gotten admitted into a single Ivy League school.

But that’s the problem with affirmative action. It’s not fair. He’s compared only to other Black people. And Whites are only compared to other Whites plus everyone smarter than them (such as Asians). It’s not about standards of intelligence and academic achievement. In fact, when I read today’s USA Today article on him, I could also read the subtext: “He’s smart . . . for a Black guy.” USA Today drooled:

His SAT score, at 2,250 out of 2,400 points, puts him in the 99th percentile for African-American students.

Um, why are we being told how this guy compares to other Blacks on the SAT? How is that relevant? And a better question is: why aren’t we being told how this guy did on the SAT compared to everyone who took it? The answer to that is that his score falls below the 99th percentile for everyone else, especially Whites and Asians, and it is likely not good enough for admission to any Ivy League school–but for his minority status–let alone all of them.

Blacks should be insulted by this. But they aren’t. They continue to demand this insult to their intelligence and achievement, called “affirmative action,” maybe because they know that in many cases, such as that of this over-hyped Enin guy, they aren’t “the smartest guy in the room.” In Enin’s school, there were 11 other students who performed academically better than he did. Do you think all of them–or even any of them–got into all eight Ivy League schools? No, they didn’t, or we’d have heard about it. And the reason is probably that they are White or not of the preferred minority status.

More:

But Enin has “a lot of things in his favor,” says college admissions expert Katherine Cohen, CEO and founder of IvyWise, a New York-based consulting firm. For one thing, he’s a young man. “Colleges are looking for great boys,” Cohen says. Application pools these days skew heavily toward girls: The U.S. Department of Education estimates that females comprised 57% of college students in degree-granting institutions last year. Colleges — especially elite ones — are struggling to keep male/female ratios even, so admitting academically gifted young men like Enin gives them an advantage.

He ranks No. 11 in a class of 647 at William Floyd, a large public school on Long Island’s south shore. That puts him in the top 2% of his class. His SAT score, at 2,250 out of 2,400 points, puts him in the 99th percentile for African-American students.

Kwasi Enin, whose parents are both nurses from Ghana, is not the first person to be admitted to all eight Ivy League school. But the reason he’s being pimped on us to no end is that he’s Black and his parents are immigrants. There is an agenda–no, two agendas–going on here. It’s not just that he’s a male. There are plenty of White males who did better than he did on the SAT, and they didn’t get in to all eight Ivies. I wonder how many of the ten kids ahead of him in his class are White males, and yet, again, they didn’t get into all eight Ivy League pods of pretension.

When I first saw this story in the middle of the night on a newscast, I thought, “You see, minorities claim they are discriminated against in college admissions and the SATs, and this Black guy got into all eight Ivy League schools!” But as I looked further into the story, I saw that, yes, there was discrimination at play here.

Racist discrimination in favor of this Black kid, which can only mean that somebody White with better grades (such as the 10 classmates who did better than he did at his school) and test scores (such as anyone who scored in the actual 99th percentile of SAT scores) was rejected on the basis of race and having too pale of a complexion.

***

One other thing: If you look at the SAT score percentile document posted above, you’ll note that Enin may have scored in the 98th percentile, at least compared to Whites. You might argue that this still shows he’s a genius. Yeah, but the fact is that there are plenty of Whites who scored in the 99th percentile who didn’t get into Harvard and Yale and Princeton and Brown, etc. And the competition is that tough at that level (even though many of these so-called “geniuses” are actually not too bright, except on paper).

He was given a leg up solely based on race.

**** UPDATE/Correction, 04/02/14: Yesterday, the source article used for this post stated that Enin’s parents were both doctors and studied medicine. Today, it’s been corrected to note they are both nurses, and, accordingly, this post has been corrected, as well. ****

Yes, but it is not his fault when americans confuse african immigrants with african.americans. Same would be, confusing indian high.tech immigrants in europe with europan gypsies that descend from india.
And nigerian, ghanaian have similar sat scores as asians, so it is questionable why they get affirmative action.
And.it is also questionable why he is hyped like that, since there are many western.africans at ivy leagues witth perfect sat scores.

You white supremacists are so funny. It must take a lot of time, energy and plotting to find ways to subjugate the vast majority of the planet just in order to make sure that your future children and great grandchildren, etc., will also be white. What a heavy burden that must be, having to bully the rest of the planet in order to ensure your genetic survival?

If this boy was white or Asian he would never have gotten in. Gotta lower the standards for blacks. Typical liberal bullshite.

Jamal & Rhasheene are good examples of why Affirmative Action should not exist. Especially Jamal with the falsehoods he is spouting. His “elite school” must be perpetuating the brainwashing he obviously received in his upbringing.

Wonder what Frankie thinks about these two gems.

JustMe on April 5, 2014 at 3:05 pm

Ugh. Can’t believe that this thread is still going on.

Look, the affirmative action issue is a legitimate one in general, but not in this case specifically. Using the data that I provided (including the fact that blacks make up a tiny percentage of the student body of Ivy League schools, from 5% to 6%) the only university that this fellow would not have gained entrance into were he white or Asian is Cornell.

Yes it is true that there are many categories of affirmative action, but even if it does indeed add up to 25%, that is irrelevant in this case, as this students’ standardized test scores are above the 25%.

And the claims that he would have been better off at a “second tier institution” is patently ridiculous. This fellow’s scores were well within the median for a number of top schools, including at least 2 Ivy League schools, ALL top public schools, and a number of elite non-Ivy League schools.

Say what you want about the disproportionate media attention or the affirmative action issue in general, but with respect to Enis you have no case against this fellow. That is, unless you choose to have one. Which is your prerogative, of course, but it is one thoroughly unsupported by the data.

Gerald on April 5, 2014 at 4:43 pm

Gerald, read the book I referred you to: “The Price of Admission” by Daniel Golden. Affirmative action of various kinds, including Blacks, Latinos, legacies, athletes, children of professors, children of celebrities, celebrities themselves, etc. frequently adds up to 50%, not 25%. Thus, the average score (even including the few affirmative action admissions with competitive scores) is around the 75th percentile, which in the case of the elite schools is close to 800. Even those people don’t get into all eight schools.

You remind me a little of Dr. Ben Carson — opposed to affirmative action, but…

Little Al on April 6, 2014 at 8:41 am

And of course I meant the average score of non-affirmatives. Oh, and in the affirmative action category, how could I forget children of donors.

Little Al on April 6, 2014 at 8:46 am

Also Gerald, it is hard to believe that women are not beneficiaries of affirmative action re the Ivies. It would be interesting to compare SAT scores of female vs. male admissions to the Ivies. But, of course, that information will never be available.

Given all of this, affirmative admissions may be well over 50% for the Ivies, Stanford, U of C, etc. CIT is virtually the only school immune to affirmative action (at least for the time being.)

Little Al on April 6, 2014 at 11:35 am

but how is this any different than a top athlete admitted to an ivy with signficantly lower SATs and grades?? Unfortunately the moral of the story is “life is not fair.”

Diane on April 6, 2014 at 9:41 pm

Do you know how to read Diane? In my 8:41 comment I included athletes.

Well as everyone is entitled to their opinion, I truly believe that some are getting away from the bigger issue. Whether affirmative action or just on his achievements alone, this young man obviously must be proud of what he accomplished and instead of arguing and complaining about HOW he did it, just be happy for him. Yes his parents both may be nurses so he wasn’t brought up on welfare, however this student not only studied to no end academically, he also sacrificed a lot of time, dedication, and perseverance outside of school as well. This young man has done more things in his 17 years of life than most adults have do in a lifetime, white or black. He not only deserves the recognition but I am most certain he will do great things. And for those of you that are speaking negatively or downplaying this talented young man…. before you speak, walk in his shoes first and if you still attempt to open your mouth, think about if it were YOUR child. Would you say those things to him/her??

• Kwesi Enin’s score, 2250, is the 99th percentile for all students, not just African Americans. Please see bing/Google “SAT-Percentile-Ranks-Composite-CR-M-W-2013”
• What source says 10 people at William Floyd High School scored better on their SATs? Sources state that he graduated 11th of 647 students. This simply means 10 students had a higher class rank. Class rank is usually determined by GPA not SATs.
• What about Cameron Clarke? He scored a 2400. Is his SAT score because of affirmative action? bing/Google “Perfect SAT score for Cameron Clarke”

You are so off the mark here. Where did you get your stats? We have been told how he ranks nationally…that is, with all students who took the SAT’s with him. And this info is on CNN…not an obscure source. And do you know how he ranks nationally (obviously, no you don’t)…he ranks in the 98 percentile. So I question your premise that he is only a genius when compared to other black people. I don’t think the difference between genius and not-genius is the 1% between 98% and 99%. He sure outscored me on the SATs (and I’m white, not that it should matter, and don’t consider myself stupid, in fact, I have an above average IQ, but not a genius one for sure.)

Enin didn’t even get a perfect SAT score, nor is he top of his class. So why make news? Is it because it’s such a rare achievement in the black population? I remember from middle school through HS, this ASian student had perfect grades and scores each and every time, not once less than perfect. His SAT was a perfect score and he was valedictorian, yet why isn’t somenone like him in the news??

Jamie on May 1, 2014 at 2:30 am

    • Jamie you’re right Mr. Enin didn’t get a perfect SAT score, but every student in an IVY school didn’t get a perfect SAT score. Perfect scores are rare, even for Asians. Only 494 students got perfect SAT scores; that’s about one third of one percent. Approximately 198,000 Asians took the SAT in 2013. About 1 per 1,306 Asian students got a perfect SAT score; that’s far less than 1%. Less than one-tenth of one percent of all Asian students, who took the SAT, got a perfect score.
    • Scores of 2100 and above are not common among Blacks, and perfect SAT scores are extremely rare. This is why high scores are celebrated. Sahila Ibrahim’s 2340 SAT score was celebrated and Cameron Clarke’s 2400 perfect SAT score was celebrated.

As a parent I love to see all kids do well in school no matter what race. The problem I have is when they don’t compare apples to apples. I’m a father of triplets (8 years old), 2 of my kids are great students and one gets pulled out of class for special help. I congratulate all of them when they get good grades equally but i know it’s not equal work. As my kids get older they will know the difference of ” apples to apples” but for know I’ll make all of them feel good about doing good. I wish this kid well and I’m sure he’ll go on to great things being that he is very smart. but I’ve read that his score what compared only to other black kids, and that’s where I have a problem. This is not ” Apples to Apples”. If you wanna be equal you gotta play equal. I don’t know how true this is and I have nothing against this young man but it doesn’t seem right. It’s like saying, let’s put the white guy in the NBA because out all the white guys he’s the best one. We all know that there will never be an all white NBA try out. When your good, your good, don’t create different levels for different people. Keep it ” Apples to Apples”.

I think something is being lost in this kid’s admittance to college. I work as a college admission counselor and see the huge social and cultural differences between rich white kids attending private schools and poor kids (black and white) attending inner city public schools. There is plenty of empirical evidence that suggests there are a whole lot more in the latter group, and there are expected to be more in this group as the gap between the rich few and the many poor continues to grow in our world. One of the best ways we can slow the growth of poverty and this growing divide between the rich and poor, which is at the root of so many social issues, is to ensure that our world’s leaders have an accurate perception of what poverty and inequality are really like. With very few exceptions, rich white kids will not grow up with the same understanding of inequality that an impoverished black or white kid will. Poor kids survive inequality every day, never forgetting where they came from, while rich kids have the luxury of ignoring it. It should be celebrated that Kwasi is even going to college, much more an Ivy League school. Kids like Kwasi hold the most potential for changing the world we live in because by the time they end up in leadership positions, they will have lived through much more adversity and seen many more pieces to the puzzle than what their rich white counterparts have.

jamman1604 on June 19, 2014 at 1:37 pm

How was this kid disadvantaged? Both his parents were nurses. Clearly, he was from a middle class family. There are many white and Asian kids who come from far poorer circumstances and with better academic profile but have zero chance of getting into any Ivy League, let alone 8.

And BTW, this whole “holistic” nonsense is simply a way for Ivy Leagues to justify their discriminatory policies. And if you are so concerned about inequality, why give preferences to children of celebrities and rich people?

Taxpayers need to work towards ending tax exempt status for private colleges that practice these discriminatory policies.

South Asian Mom on June 24, 2014 at 5:17 pm

This shows how corrupt Ivy League Admission Committees are. An Asian kid with Enin’s profile would probably not even get into one Ivy League, let alone 8. Epsenshade study (Princeton sociologist) showed the following:

Asian students have higher average SAT scores than any other group, including whites. A study by Princeton sociologist Thomas Espenshade examined applicants to top colleges from 1997, when the maximum SAT score was 1600 (today it’s 2400). Espenshade found that Asian-Americans needed a 1550 SAT to have an equal chance of getting into an elite college as white students with a 1410 or black students with an 1100.

My son had a near perfect SAT score, 35 on ACT, worked three summers in Immunology, Latin Scholar, etc., etc. He received several letters from some of the Ivy Leagues, including Harvard, encouraging him to apply. But his guidance counselor informed him that he’d just be wasting his money as his chances of getting in were very small. Similar experience when applying to Med Schools. Scored in the 99.99 percentile on the MCAT but still no chance of getting into any Ivy League Med Schools.

See my comment above South Asian Mom. Think clearly about why that is and then ask yourself if it’s really the black kids who are pushing kids like yours out or the subpar white kids that are sneaking in under the radar? A serious study of this countries history will show that it was not black people that were always obsessed with race. It was the white majority, then they turn around and claim people of color (especially blacks) play the race card. I would submit that we were dealt the race card in a casino of white privilege. I’m fine with white privilege, just don’t ask people to ignore it’s existence when it is something the country takes so much pride in. “Real Americans” somehow never seems to refer to Johnny Patel, Bobby Kim, Jane Hernandez, etc. Don’t fall for it the Ivy’s and elite schools have Affirmative Action for whites. also see what’s happening at the University of Texas Law School where the white kids aren’t failing the bar at an alarming rate. Funny how I never see white people angry about these examples. http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/05/21/cronyism-blamed-for-half-of-univ-of-texas-law-school-grads-inability-to-pass-the-bar/

All of this huff and puff and finger pointing toward students of African ancestry and Latin/Hispanic ancestry. Here’s the truth Affirmative Action has always existed in this country it was just for white males. More specifically white anglo saxon protestant male land owners. That has indeed changed over time but the white part still remains a strong feature. With gender coming in second so that white females also experience a preference. A perfect example is what occurs in schools that go to a test/gpa only admissions process. Without fail they are populated by the high performing Asian students that apply. Take a look at Stuyvesant High in NY. An elite high school with 72% Asian student population. THAT it what merit based admissions truly look like. I find it odd that at the top institutions you don’t actually have appropriate representation of Asian students. Off the record these admissions officers will tell you they don’t want their schools to be “too Asian” even if they are the best performers according to test/gpa metrics. So instead they practice unofficial affirmative action to benefit who they see fit and the PRIMARY beneficiaries are white people!!! South Asian mom tell your son not to point at the black and hispanic/latino kids but point at the system that actually gives preferential treatment to whiteness! lol A unique white flight occurs when the parents of white children flee a district because it has been invaded by high performing kids of Asian ethnicity. Funny how when white people are getting their asses kicked all of a sudden they are interested in “holistic” admissions, etc. Harvard, Yale should all be far more “yellow” and “brown” to reflect the high performing Asian and South Asian kids that are crushing the white kids academically. They do not because the schools have a vested interest in retaining the allure of being elite AND white institutions. The essay, interview and extra curricular activities are the back door these institutions use to prop up lower performing white students. Then they distract people by pointing at the minuscule numbers of black and brown students of more traditional disadvantaged backgrounds. A brilliant slight of hand if you ask me. Most of America can’t stomach the idea that their best institutions might look like they were in Beijing or Bangalore Remember many of the schools were literally built with slave labor. We Americans sure know how to do the hypocrisy thing. The kids getting really screwed are the Asian kids because as a group the white kids are significantly displaced by the large number of ultra high performing Asians. Stuyvesant is far from the only story. If you’re gonna be fair be fair but if you’re gonna selectively present data to support your group then you are no better than those you rail against. Smh…

I was reluctant to read this foolishness but this racist lady know that this would spark a debate just to get her name out there. This low life racist just can’t accept the fact that another black has made it and if this racist woman has any kids, they won’t have a chance at anything if they have to go up against Kwasi. Well racist lady, there are many more smart black kids out there who will make it as well so get over it racist lady! You sound like you are miserable and you come up in life by butting others down! This is a kid and you have some damn nerves talking about him! Look racist lady, white people had a 400 year jump on life, so step back and just accept what God has allowed!

Proud Mom of a smart black son on July 6, 2014 at 3:30 am

You just reply racism to everyone and everything don’t you? You know what racism is? Racism is when Asians get docked on the SAT just because they are Asian. Did we have a 400 year head start like the whites in this country? Keep making excuses proud mom.

I came across this article. I can’t believe Debbie is criticizing the accomplishments of this man and trying to attribute his hard work to affirmative action. Clearly this man also has the academic record, SAT scores and brilliant essay which also secured his admission to these fine schools. I think Debbie is envious – while the University of Michigan and University of Wisconsin are fine schools, I think it really get to her that Mr. Enin was admitted to more prestigious universities – eight of them. I don’t think she would have bothered writing this article about a black man admitted to both Michigan and Wisconsin, and neither would anyone else.

Shaun on July 19, 2014 at 2:20 pm

Seriously? Debbie?

Farova on August 13, 2014 at 11:59 am

His test scores are higher than what most Americans would get. They are also high enough to get into an Ivy League School. Ivy League admission requires more than just great test scores, personality, unique characteristics, and community service are also a big part of it.

His parents are making an honest living and i’m sure they are making enough to contribute to his education.

So stop throwing a temper tantrum and get over it. I’m sure you will find a college that will fit your intellectual need.

Michelle on August 18, 2014 at 7:25 pm

This is an incredibly idiotic post. College acceptance is based on a myriad of things, not just standardized test scores or class rank. Extracurriculars, community service, class rigor and a number of other things are factored in as well. For you to say 11th out of 674 students isn’t amazing is ridiculous and so is disparaging a 2250. Regardless of what race he is, that is a magnificent score. Having a 2400 and being first in your class shouldn’t and doesn’t warrant automatic acceptance to an Ivy league, which could explain the students ahead of him rank-wise. That would be moronic because so much else needs to be considered. Your post is just racist and you should honestly be ashamed for putting up such trashy content.

The nerve of a white women(a suspected white supremacist) to call out a black child who is trying to get an education when white women benefit from AA the most.

This woman needs to do her homework better. Enin is, in fact, smack dab in the middle(or better) of the 25/75 for each of the ivies. Wow. It took me 5 minutes to locate the info for median SAT scores for the ivies and this ignoramus goes on this ludicrous rant for what? Because she’s a racist b*t%h. I am the destroyer of ignorance, and I have come.

you’re in point of fact a just right webmaster.
The web site loading pace is amazing. It seems that you’re doing any distinctive
trick. In addition, The contents are masterwork. you’ve done a excellent activity on this subject!

The author is an idiot. While the student may have been in the 99th percentile for blacks, he was also in the 97th for whites and asians. So he did better than 97% of all whites and asians in the country. Ivy leagues are not looking for all 99 percentile kids either. How did you do on your SATs ? You sound like a bitter, jealous, loser.

Frodosdojo on October 28, 2014 at 9:05 am

This article to me sounded racist from the start all the way to the last period.

Ray on October 28, 2014 at 9:08 pm

Other have probably made this point, but it’s impossible to red every comment:

While 750 is in the 98th percentile (for all students), not everybody can get an average of 750 on all three tests. That’s why 2250 is in fact 99th percentile. See SAT Percentile Ranks (total scores up to 2400) If the media didn’t report that number, and only reported his percentiles compared to other black test-takers, that was wrong. His achievement is significant by any standard.

By the way, there’s more to this young man than his class rank and SAT score and race. Lots more. You know, the whole “extracurricular activities” thing, his essay, letters of recommendation. None of that was mentioned in your article.

Carlo on October 31, 2014 at 12:37 pm

Carlo on October 31, 2014 at 12:38 pm

Debbie, disclaimer: I am not a supporter of “affirmative action” (i.e. race quotas), at all. But, that said, if the Ivies won’t admit a kid at this level, they just wouldn’t have any academic-admit black students. It’s that simple. His SAT scores are very, very good by any standard. Higher than the median at ALL 8 Ivies. Higher than most of the athletes, development admits, prep school white kids, etc. And Top 2% of the class at a big suburban public school in the NY metro area is certainly good enough. So next time you want to pick a bone with affirmative action, find a better example. This young man is an academic high achiever, and will do very well in college and beyond. He will not be an affirmative action washout.

lak on December 4, 2014 at 12:31 pm

YOU ARE A BITCH! (I’m sorry for degrading bitches down to your level).

Oh by the way, I was just accepted into Princeton University. Yes, if you are wondering, I am a minority. I’m Hispanic and proud. Now you can go write a racist post about my admission because truly I don’t care.

Your closed-mind is probably the reason why top institutions did not accept you! HA!

Samuel Vilchez Santiago on January 9, 2015 at 10:57 pm

This woman, along with the rest of her blog, is inadequate and immature. Enin scored in the 99th percentile for both blacks and ALL participants. I’ve just been going through this blog and it is filled with factually incorrect statements. One of the worst blogs i’ve seen to date.

ON on March 6, 2015 at 5:15 am

This is sick! Do a story on the white(males) in IVY league schools who don’t score near this young man. You are a woman, you obviously are not that bright so you were probably admitted to college through an affirmative action program.

Latonia Heard on March 24, 2015 at 9:15 am

My daughter, who was second in her class with 2350 SATs, a long and impressive list of extracurriculars and service, and recommendations from teachers who adore her, was rejected from 7 Ivies. She is what is known in college admissions as an “unhooked white female”. Everything outstanding, yet nothing the Ivies want. Life is not fair, but people making these decisions that impact the lives of young people should try to be. I don’t see any attempt at fairness here.

Sara on April 10, 2015 at 7:32 pm

I think you should write a similar article about student athletes. They take up the spots which highly academic asians and whites have earned. More so than a few minorities.

And be happy for this kid. You’re lucky you weren’t born black.

Carolyn on April 12, 2015 at 6:17 pm

People need to do their own research. The percentage of Black students in Ivy league schools is barely measurable. Fact:The majority of Black college graduates worked just as hard as other races to get in college. News flash: Black people rarely check the box that identifies their race.
