Uh-Oh, New York Magazine Doesn’t Like My Oscars Review

By Debbie Schlussel

Oh, no. Liberal, intelligentsia “bible,” the pretentious New York Magazine, doesn’t like my critique of the Oscars. (The Oscars column in question is here.) In a nonsensical, unfunny (like Oscar hostatrix Ellen) “parody” of how the New York Times would have covered the Oscars and “12 Years a Slave” in 1853 (when there was still slavery), writer Jonathan Chait is upset that I pilloried the PC, race-obsessed Oscars. Scorned by the liberal faux-intellectuals? Uh-oh, whatever will I do?! One thing I can’t do is get the humorless liberal rag and Chait a sense of humor. It’s something ya either got . . . or you don’t (as in Mr. Chait’s case). Beyond fixing. Don’t forget that this is the mag that did pages and pages and pages of Obama lusting, issue after issue and declared Barry O “The First Jewish President.”

nymag

You see for the conniptive left, like New York Mag, the Oscars wasn’t left wing enough. They wish that the movies winning Oscars were Five Years a Knave (a/k/a “Our Savior, Obama”), ObamaCare Buyers Club, and Blue Statesmen.

No such luck. Hollywood propaganda is a little more subtle than that. Not by much, though.

I feel like I should give a proud Sally Field-esque acceptance speech at the New York Mag “accolades.” They hate me. They really hate me.

In this case that’s a badge of honor.

Maybe that’s how Lizzie, the esteemed Harvard PhD stumbled across your blog.

Jonathan Chait — one of the biggest hacks around. He was a hack when he was with the New Republic as well.

Although the title 12 Years a Slave does seem apt for people living in New York in the post-Guiliani days.

I have always marveled that most liberals live in neighborhoods with virtually no blacks. Even Obama lives in a pretty white neighborhood.

I also find it interesting that liberals give less to charity than conservatives.

Liberals are less willing to give their rights away than they are willing to give other people’s rights away.

Liberals love minorities except when they are Christian, Jewish, white males, conservatives, or competent people.

NY Magazine used to be funny and creative. Now it is not fit for my dog to poo on.

Jonathan E. Grant on March 3, 2014 at 5:13 pm

The quintessential libtard Chait was so unfunny and incoherent that I was embarrassed for NY Magazine. If readers insist on reading his nonsense, you’ll notice that he pads the piece with a whole column pulled from NYT in the 1800s.

Maybe he was on heroin?

skzion on March 3, 2014 at 5:19 pm

Who gives a chit what New York socialists think. They probably thought the film Jarhead was a Hollywood masterpiece.

ha, congrats on the endorsement

When I read the article in NY Magazine, the phrase, “What a bunch of dicks” came to mind.

Jonathan E. Grant on March 3, 2014 at 6:09 pm

I prefer – “bundle of dicks”

sorry, can’t get over that 🙂

Debbie says that Ellen is not funny and for the most part she is right. But she was funny when she said that taking all the nominees total pictures into consideration, it equalled 1400, but only 6 years of college! And to prove it she asked Amy Adams if she had any college and Adams said no. Now THAT’S funny!

Tommy Thomas on March 3, 2014 at 6:20 pm

Well, I’m crushed. Ha! It was the best review of the Oscars that I’ve ever read. Most truthful.
They pat one another on the back, award one another and get paid millions because they never grew up from playing pretend. What a screwed up world.

Laura S. on March 3, 2014 at 6:51 pm

Isn’t that the main point of acting to engage in “playing pretend?” That’s been true since the plays of Sophocles and Euripides.

New York magazine is still published? Who knew?

First, the newspaper was not called The New York Times in 1853. It was called the New York Daily Times until 1857. A writer for New York magazine should know this. An editor for New York magazine should know this. Alas, they do not know this.

Second, it’s written, “The North, lectures the Grey Lady,…” This is an anachronism. The New York Times would not be called the Grey Lady until about 100 years later. See my blog.

Third, “Yes, the New York Times has been sneering at red-state America for 160 years.” This is yet another anachronism. “Red states” and “blue states” wouldn’t become popular terms until the 1990s. The South didn’t always vote Republican; the slave owners were Democrats. “Red-state America for 160 years” makes no sense.

This is a pointless, unreadable piece by Jonathan Chait.

Readers here should know my personal experience with New York magazine, when I learned that it truly didn’t give a damn about New York City or about black people. Over twenty years ago, I found that New York City’s nickname, “the Big Apple,” came from black stable hands at the Fair Grounds racetrack in New Orleans. I dedicated an official, city council-approved “Big Apple Corner” street sign in 1997, based on my research. I told New York magazine the story about “the Big Apple,” but the magazine wouldn’t publish a single line about it. The magazine wouldn’t even respond to me. It’s been two decades now, and I’m still waiting.

I’ve been in Time Out New York. Maybe I have to spell this out in Tarzan language for New York magazine. You–New York magazine! Me–solve Big Apple! Big Apple from black people! You publish story!

Nah, they’ll never get it.

Even that cartoon/blue caricature of Obama’s face is bothersome. I can’t stand looking at him for one second.

DS_ROCKS! on March 3, 2014 at 10:06 pm

Debbie, they not only cited you in their writings, they also cited Breitbart/Breitfraud as you refer to and the American Spectator (I remember you writing a column about them a few years ago on their alleged anti-Semitism, etc.), DS, all you did was use rational and plausible critique on a specific film that was nominated last night at the Oscars (which BTW, I didn’t watch, could careless), there was NOT a hint or an ounce of racism or bigotry in your earlier thread that you wrote this morning on the Oscars from last night. And I agree with Jonathan E. Grant, liberals in their community, precisely the white one’s, live in a all-white lily community with no to very few non-white minorities, which BTW is a fact!

“A nation is defined by its borders, language & culture!”

Sean R. on March 3, 2014 at 10:48 pm

I’d like to see a TV movie review show featuring DS and Jonathan Chait, with a format similar to the old Siskel & Ebert show. I think it would be very entertaining.

If ever there was a moment in American history that allowed people to imagine they might be able to move on from slavery then New York magazine has reserved the right to tell you what those moments where since 1853.
That’s some pedigree they’ve been waving around for over a century.
One of those moments was obviously the Oscars apparently which is what this is really all about.
You know they really can’t afford to have too many reviews like yours to floating around unchallenged Debbie.
At some point people might actually realize nobody needs the official stamp any more.

The franchise that just keeps on spinning

Frankz on March 3, 2014 at 11:25 pm

The movies are so crummy. I don’t even go to them anymore.

The academy awards are nothing but an orgy of liberal orthodoxy. So much so that most of my liberal friends and family can’t stand them anymore.

You’re comments on the academy awards were easy to ignore. The counter-comments by an obscure publication were also easy to ignore.

Much ado about nothing.

It won’t be long before they add a 4th digit to your cable TV menu.

The Chinese Yuan devaluated today. Obama pressured
Israel for more concessions to the Arabs. Bloodshed increases throughout the Muslim nations. Russia invades Ukraine. But hey! Did you see that dress what’s her face wore at the academy awards?

There is NO Santa Claus on March 4, 2014 at 12:38 am

“Bloodshed increases throughout the Muslim nations.”

You say it like that’s a bad thing.

    DS_ROCKS! on March 4, 2014 at 1:43 am

    @There is NO Santa Claus

Obviously Debbie’s comments weren’t so easy to ignore that the New York Magazine overlooked them.
That’s probably because they were more entertaining than the Oscars themselves.

What’s not so easy to ignore is the fact that Jonathan Chait is basically sarcastically implying that the lines he quoted are part of a historical continuum of comments designed to downplay the evils of slavery.

Slavery of course is just a stand in for modern equivalents as the left sees them today.
From there it’s just a short hop to the allegation that people are racist for even thinking the Awards might be biased in favour of this kind of film.
Which is exactly what Jonathan Chait thinks and all he really is capable of thinking truth be told.

So this is “much ado about” the “nothing” that is a standard tactic with so called “liberals” in the New York Times and elsewhere.

The New York Times has apparently been fighting the good fight since 1853 but unfortunately not influencing Academy award decisions as far as Jonathan Chait is concerned I’m sure.

Sure there are more important things going on in the world but articles like this are part of the reason nobody pays attention.

Frankz on March 4, 2014 at 2:54 am

Poor Dears! 😉

If a liberal buys an iPhone at Wal Mart, does he/she believe in slavery?

Do liberals believe in the death penalty? Yes, they do, for the victims.

Liberals never address the real, actual, current slavery going on all over the Earth, 30 million or so estimated, mostly females, mostly sex slaves.

Hollywood produces fantasy, is a fantasy, I don’t expect anything else from them.

Pray Hard on March 4, 2014 at 10:13 am

**** ’em. The New York Magazine is for ‘tards.

Jack on March 4, 2014 at 11:39 am

New York Magazine hasn’t been even remotely funny since Mary Ann Madden retired from her post as editor of their New York Magazine Competitions (which was home to some very bad puns, riddles, etc., such as:
Q: What has 100 eyes but cannot see?
A: The Senate.
and “Emile Zola – Jacuzzi Whirlpool Baths” [in reference to hypothetical commercial endorsements]). They’re also the ones that, way back when, published an article by a certain Nik Cohn – a story that proved totally made up out of whole cloth – that nonetheless served as the basis for the movie “Saturday Night Fever.” Their other moment of infamy was when they published a subsection called “Ms.” (started by – you guessed it – Gloria Steinem) that would later be spun off into its own magazine whose rotting corpse is still found every so often in newsstands.

And another nitpicking: Until c.1897, The Times had a hyphen between “New” and “York.” And some of their early publishers would have spun in their graves over what the Ochs / Sulzberger families have done to the paper.

ConcernedPatriot on March 4, 2014 at 2:11 pm

You’re right Debbie in that you consider it a badge of honor in regards to the liberal rag New York Magazine. Little Johnny Chait and other liberals who work at libmags like Time, News Weak, The Rolling Stoned etc. have zero sense of humor. These are the same defective individuals who love Obama to the point of it being psychotic. They love all things Oscar (including the boring hosts)and the other award shows and if someone makes fun of either then the girlyman claws come out. Somewhere in the deep recesses of Chaits tiny little mind (probably next to that blue image of Da Wun) he knows that your column was the sharpest take of the whole dumb affair. Again his lack of a sense of humor prevents him from saying that plus a acute case of the Obama vapors. You know what they say Debbie, If you don’t piss off the dimwitted liberals then your not doing your job. Keep up the good work.

Ken b on March 4, 2014 at 8:23 pm

Most movies coming out these days are crap. They are worthless. I despise Liberals completely. Occasionally, Debbie will find something decent.
