Weekend Box Office: Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit – Villains are Christian Russian Terrorists in Dearbornistan – HUH???

By Debbie Schlussel

In the new “Jack Ryan” movie, terrorists trying to set off a nuclear bomb in America are CHRISTIAN terrorists based in a church in Dearbornistan, Michigan. HUH???

Tom Clancy hated the Hollywood movies based on his books. He said, “Giving your book to Hollywood is like turning your daughter over to a pimp.” And so it goes with “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” in movie theaters today. The movie, however, is not based on any particular Clancy book, but on the “spirit” of Jack Ryan, the main character in many of Clancy’s thriller novels. But it’s the worst Jack Ryan movie by far–no, by a Grand Canyon-sized chasm. The other Jack Ryan movies were decent. This stank.

jackryanshadowrecruit

It’s not news that Hollywood will do anything to avoid showing Muslims as terrorists. It did that with at least two of Clancy’s works. In his “The Sum of All Fears,” Islamic terrorists detonate a nuclear bomb in the US (at the Super Bowl) to drive the U.S. and the Soviet Union into war with each other. In the movie of the same name, under pressure from the HAMAS unindicted co-conspirator in terrorism, the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), the Muslims were no longer. Instead, they were neo-Nazis. (Director Phil Alden Robinson wrote CAIR, “I hope you will be reassured that I have no intention of promoting negative images of Muslims or Arabs, and I wish you the best in your continuing efforts to combat discrimination.”) In Act of Valor” (read my review), the terrorist attacking the United States with thousands of homicide bombers is not Muslim, but a Russian Jew. Clancy co-wrote a novel based on “Act of Valor’s” original script, and there was no “Jewish” terrorist, just one who is Russian and implicitly Muslim.

And in today’s “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” a terrorist cell based in the Muslim capital of America, Dearbornistan, Michigan, is not an Islamic terrorist cell in a mosque, but a Russian terrorist cell based in an Eastern Orthodox church, which aims to detonate a nuclear bomb in America. And the key villain in the movie is a Russian Christian billionaire (we’re shown scenes of the guy in church), played by Kenneth Branagh, who wants the bomb to affect the U.S. stock market and dollar. Are you kidding me–a Russian Eastern Orthodox terrorist cell in Dearbornistan, the city which is majority Muslim, has a Muslim, Hezbollah-supporting City Council President, and Arabs as a majority of its City Council? That’s how far Hollywood is willing to go to avoid portraying terrorists as they usually are in the United States of America: MUSLIMS. There is as much chance of a Russian Eastern Orthodox terrorist cell emerging out of Dearbornistan as there is in Beirut, Riyadh, Tehran, Mogadishu, Minneapolistan, or Cairo.

The Christian-Russians-as-America’s-terrorist-enemies narrative is beyond tiresome. How many Christian Russians have blown up planes, buildings, and other installations in America? Answer: none.

And, aside from the stupidity of the Russian Christian terrorist plot line, the movie is just awful. It gave me a headache. The movie was slow, tiresome, and boring, and made up for that by playing loud “the villain is gonna get ya” music for virtually the entire movie. The movie was also disjointed, confusing, and involved almost no suspense, but for two brief scenes. It was just stupid.

This movie is supposed to be a “prequel” that explains the early years of Jack Ryan, but is really just a reboot, since Ryan’s “early years” take place after his later ones. Chris Pine is fine as Ryan. In fact, he’s pretty good (though he’s no Harrison Ford), but has a terrible script to work with.

Jack Ryan is studying economics in London when 9/11 happens, and he decides to join the Marines. He’s badly injured in Afghanistan, and while rehabbing, Kevin Costner tries to recruit him to join the CIA. After initially resisting, he joins, and ten years later, he is in a job at New York’s financial center, trying to trace financing of terrorism. He’s now married to the American medical student who was his physical therapist (Keira Knightley–whose weird American accent makes her sound like she’s speaking through permanently gnashed teeth). She is a doctor and doesn’t know he’s a CIA agent. Soon, Ryan is in Russia to investigate the Russian billionaire who is financing terrorism and plays a cat and mouse game to avoid being killed and to get secret information of where the money is going. Miraculously and with no evidence pointing to it, he suddenly uncovers a terrorist plot against America involving the ridiculous Russian Eastern Orthodox terrorist cell based in Dearbornistan.

Believe me, I’m making this sound much more interesting than it is. It ain’t. This movie is a confusing mess of a bore.

Skip it, and you’ll have missed nothing, other than the subliminal sounds of Tom Clancy turning over in his grave.

Yet another of his daughters has been turned over to the Hollywood pimps.

I suppose our relations with Russia will not be threatened by putting them in a bad light, and we have never ever had to be diplomatically cautious with them. I seem to remember hearing about a little thing called the COLD WAR years ago. We were not cautioned to hold our tongues about the Russians then, and we shouldn’t have to hold our tongues about the Muz now.

Lisa on January 17, 2014 at 12:28 pm

Can they get any more far out with these movies? Yeah, Orthodox Christians are the villians.

Is it cold up there Debbie?

bupkin on January 17, 2014 at 12:40 pm

Back in the years right after the USSR ceased to be the USSR, foreign policy advisor to all things Democrat in the White House, Ziggy Brzezinski wrote a book about the foreign policies of the USA.

In this book , at one point he writes that after the USSR falls the BIGGEST enemy of the USA is the Orthodox Church.

It is just ME AGAIN on January 19, 2014 at 12:39 am

Christian Orthodox terrorists?

Debbie, I know why they wouldn’t write in Jewish settler terrorists in their place!

You’d have given this movie four Bin Ladens. And your rating is quite generous already.

Only in Hollywood’s world are Islamic terrorists pure fiction.

NormanF on January 17, 2014 at 1:01 pm

Although it’s interesting that they have the villains based in Dearbornistan, a place everyone knows is Muslim. Is it possible they were pushing the envelope & saying indirectly that they know the terrorists are really Muslim? (i.e. indirectly trying to circumvent the politically incorrect censorship)

Little Al on January 17, 2014 at 1:02 pm

Of course I meant politically ‘correct’ censorship.

Little Al on January 17, 2014 at 2:03 pm

I’m surprised that the villains were not Christian pro-lifers living in the South and led by a former governor of Alaska and VP candidate. Or a former “Republican” President of the USA. Or better yet, the leader could be a female columnist, blogger and opponent of the Islamification of America who resides in the Detroit area who is Jewish and proudly so. I am copyrighting these ideas in case they try to steal them for the next crappy movie they will make blaming Christians and/or Jews/Israelis and/or American conservatives.

Concerned Citizen on January 17, 2014 at 1:03 pm

Debbie would also point out – this is a dated, tired reboot of the Cold War meme.

Apparently Hollywood has decided to substitute Soviet Communists with Russian Orthodox Christians.

Its not believable! I’ll say this about Vladimir Putin – he doesn’t mess around making Islamic terrorists look good! He kills them.

And I guess that’s what has Hollywood all upset! Go figure.

NormanF on January 17, 2014 at 1:06 pm

    What’s not to believe?
Ain’t them pesky Christians one of the most notorious groups on this planet. With their plotting of peace and brotherhood. Scary’ scary people thy are.
    Watch ’em!

theShadow on January 18, 2014 at 2:23 am

Why even bother to make the film? It sounds like hardcore nonsense.

Worry01 on January 17, 2014 at 2:41 pm

I have a solution to Hollywood’s obsession with not wanting to offend Muslims, or any group for that matter. Simply invent names of fake cities, states, countries, and “religious groups.” Thus, the villain operates his terrorist cell out of Middletown, East Virginia; he originates from the nation of Tomania; and his “religion” is Apothacarian. Okay, maybe this idea is dumb, but it sure is a lot less dumber than a story with Russian Eastern Orthodox terrorist operating out of Dearborn, Michigan.

Ralph Adamo on January 17, 2014 at 3:04 pm

It would be easier to see a movie about Amish terrorist groups plotting to blow every single power plant out, as electricity is a evil thing created by the “English” than to see a movie where The Religion of Peace© is seen as the bad guys.

Rodrigo Veleda on January 17, 2014 at 3:07 pm

The Villains are ALWAYS Christian Russian Terrorists in Dearbornistan.
And most especially during the Russian Olympics.

Wake up America. The future is now and it’s not you 😛
Are you feeling guilty yet?
Good

Frankz on January 17, 2014 at 5:21 pm

Dear Debbie…

Shouldn’t your rating be something like this…

FI-I-IVE MA-A-AR-XES!
FOUR B’RAK OBAMAS
THREE BIN-LADENS
TWO ARAFATS…

AND A PARTRIDGE IN A PEAR TREE!

If you can mock X-tians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, Wiccans, Animists, Pagans, Satanists, Skeptics, Agnostics and Atheists, why can’t we mock Muslims?

Oh… 9/11, right?

Whatever. This weekend’s verdict – ANOTHER NETFLIX BINGE-WATCH-ATHON! (And continue job hunt.)

Frankz on January 17, 2014 at 6:40 pm

Oh great another Hollyweird flick where the terrorists are either Whites, Christians, Jews, Conservatives, or Southerners. The nuts in California still live in their fantasy world where they don’t want to defame Islam and the real terrorists. Debbie you’re right in that this movie is just another one of Clancy’s books becoming a pimped out daughter. While I like Chris Pine (Ben Affleck sucked as Jack Ryan) I really don’t like Keira Knightly because she reminds me of Natalie Portman but without the talent. This movie just another reason I haven’t watched a Hollyweird award show in years and don’t intend to this year. These people are just too pathetic for words. I’ll skip this mess and go out and buy Clancy’s new book instead.

Ken B on January 17, 2014 at 6:44 pm

Movies like this I used to term “a recent release” meaning don’t waste the money seeing it in the cinema, don’t waste the money getting it as a new release video having to be watched within 24 hours but wait until it was a couple of dollars with three days to watch. But nowdays hardly anything deserves even that ranking, not this brown nose-ing Islam effort. This isn’t the first one either e.g. The Sum of All Fears (Clancy too) and Behind Enemy Lines from even before 9/11 were painting muslims as the good guys and eastern Europeans as the bad guys, then Hanks in Charlie’s War etc. Never watched them even on free to air TV, the thought of watching reputable actors performimg in them of their own free will for a buck making me feel nauseous.

Bronson on January 17, 2014 at 6:52 pm

Ah Hah!

I always suspected those pesky Russian Christians from Dearborn were up to something! Thanks to Hollywood, it’s now confirmed.

BTW here’s a news flash. Keep an eye on those Druids from Passaic NJ. If something happens in the future, don’t say I didn’t warn Ya’. Now it’s time for Turner Classic Movies.

The sad part is that Clancy’s books as they are would make great movies, with a scriptwriter who wanted to present the spirit of the books and not personal politics

alsacien aux USA on January 17, 2014 at 10:47 pm

Larry: You’re right on about Clancy’s books being great movies if only they stayed as close as possible to the actual plot/story-line of the book. Can’t recall the name of the novel, but I’d love to see a movie made of the one where Jack Ryan’s son (I believe it is) and another American anti-terrorism trainee, essentially, have to put down the gang of Islamonazis shooting up a shopping mall in VA. Particularly liked the idea of Ryan’s son placing a pig-skin football in the hands of a dying Islamo-PoS whom he’d just shot, telling him to enjoy Hell!
I know it’ll never happen, but stick to the book, Hollyweird movie-makers, and stop changing Islamonazi terrorists to “evil white Southern Christians,” et al. Morons!

jc15 on January 17, 2014 at 10:34 pm

I guess Christians were all that’s left. Hollywood sure wasn’t going to use the plot device of Tofu makers or papaya merchants.

This kind of trash I usually find at yard sales for .50 cents or less. Best deal is at a recycle cabin at our local dump.

Thanks for the review Miss Debbie. It’s only a matter of time until “perceived Christians”, are facing the Luciferians in the movies. The Christians, will be the bad guys , who will be shown to want to Take-Over the US from the leadership in DC. Then a follower of the Dog Star will present a plan to the President, who will like the plan and set it in motion. The “Dog Star men will stop the “evil” Christians plan. Americas threat is gone, and this Dog Star leader will be appointed the new Homeland security adviser/czar. Christians will always be under suspicion from then on. Go into hiding, and as the movie is ending, a new plot will be forming, it will be in the Bible belt, in the hills of Kentucky somewhere. Setting up the next movie.

Debbie, thanks for watching this dreck so I don’t have to. I’m a Clancy fan but have not and never will watch “Sum of All Fears”. Its the first Clancy book I read (got it in a box of hand me downs from a neighbor) and it hooked me.

I won’t watch this one either.

mark on January 18, 2014 at 10:27 am

It is probably just a dumb movie but what is annoying is that they would change the story line just to suit Muslim tastes when this is a Christian country with a Christian audience. Why do these Muslims get more say then? Is it a plot to spread Islam or are these movie producers really that cowardly?

The Russians actually seem to be trying to fight the Russian extremists. This is just going to make the movie look unrealistic and reduce possible sales revenue.

I think they should make a movie exposing the Muslims and let’s see if the little enclave of them we have now will start to riot and start killing people. It would be a good beta test.

I have a feeling they would keep their mouths shut.

bb on January 18, 2014 at 10:39 am

My family and I have simply given up going to movies. Why should we waste our hard earned money on the worthless propaganda that the rich neo-Marxist fascist pigs in Hollywood put out? Boycott Hollywood!

Cassandra on January 18, 2014 at 2:22 pm

Agreed, same here. Pay big bucks to see garbage while the entire audience is talking, texting, playing on their tablets, etc. It’s a waste of time and energy. I almost get in a fist fight every time I go, which is very seldom. Yeah, I could be that cop in Florida.

Pray Hard on January 18, 2014 at 3:37 pm

    Bravo Cassandra. 100% right

marc on January 22, 2014 at 11:56 pm

I won’t be seeing this one. To get just a glimpse of how abysmally stupid people are, go to a Yahoo or MSN article about Islam/Muslim atrocities. A large portion of the (libtard)posters will be screeching about Christians and Jews, utterly ignoring the fact that the article is about Islam. On the article about a “gay” Nigerian man being lashed, many of the posters were whining about Christians and Jews and the article plainly stated that it was sharia that got him in trouble, the judge was Muslim and he was sentenced in a sharia court. Maybe these Hollywood boneheads actually understand the American pubic very well.

Pray Hard on January 18, 2014 at 3:31 pm

DAMNIT ! ! !

I like Costner, I like Pine, and I like the Jack Ryan character.

Most of all I like theater popcorn!

I was just about to go see this flick — literally minutes away — when I accidentally came across your review. I’ve really had my fill of Hollywood vilifying Christians, Jews, and everyone other than The Real Bad Guys. They just can’t bring themselves to depict musloids as what they are: THE global threat to civilization.

So they vilify the groups that it’s politically correct to vilify . . . Christians, Jews, conservatives and Nazis. After all, to most of Hollywood those four groups are morally equivalent.

Screw it. I guess I’ll just go see Paranormal Activity 14.

Boydnar on January 18, 2014 at 6:08 pm

These fools in La La Land would never sell a movie ticket if they didn’t stir the pot. We could lump them in with the “Dog bites man” media and ignore them. When movie revenue becomes nil they’ll have to move from their ivory towers and slum it with all of us, ahem, regular folks.
Moonbeam will tax them into another state soon anyway. Look out Debbie! I’ve heard that real estate is cheap in Detroit, and there are plenty of vacant lots for them to build new studios. Hollywoodland, Part 2; everybody loves a sequel.

nadie on January 18, 2014 at 10:40 pm

The last one, (Sum Of All Fears) changed the bad guys to Neo-

Those Hollywood liberals seem to lack testicular fortitude.
They cannot offend Muslims because they might find their
heads severed from their necks.

Ann Coulter might call these cowards pussies!

Just want to add that it is estimated that Lenin’s and Stalin’s commies killed over 40 million Russian people because of their religion and the vast majority were Orthodox Christians…. estimated to have included in that number at least 1 million clergy, nuns, priests and monks… choir directors, church lay people and church educators…even the old ladies who cleaned the churches or made the bread for communion.

Why in the world would a church that has only recently been allowed freedom in Russia and is anti-war….be even interested in a violent act against the USA which gave it shelter and refuge during the dark days in the USSR??

The Russian Orthodox Church outside Russia has a cathedral and has its American headquarters in Washington, DC.

The story plot line of the movie IS PRE-POSTOROUS and insulting to ALL the Orthodox Christian people of the USA and the world! In fact, it is an insult too anybody WITH A BRAIN!

Just for a matter of information. DETROIT — Marygrove College, a private Catholic school, has established an interfaith prayer room, which will serve as a space for prayer for Muslim students. Marygrove’s president and staff, along with students and representatives from the Muslim community, celebrated on Wednesday Jan. 15, the grand opening of the room, reflecting the college’s diversity.

President of Marygrove College Dr. David Fike said the celebration of the interfaith prayer room is “symbolic” of our coming together as diverse communities and individuals in the journey of life.

Imam Hassan Al-Qazwini of the Islamic Center of America stressed the common spiritual goal of all religions.

“All roads lead to god,” he said. “We worship him in different languages, and he’s the one who understands all languages. By celebrating the grand opening of this chapel, we are celebrating our commonalities. And I’m sure our commonalities outnumber our differences.” .Since you indicated muslims and live in DETROIT.I hope will be useful information for you.. Catholic school, has established an interfaith prayer room, which will serve as a space for prayer for Muslim students…Why are Muslims at a Catholic school, and now they have the school bowing down to muslims demand.. I read here many times how America is slowly being taken away from and here is another grab to take over Catholic school..I am sure the demands are only starting.. Wasn’t sure where else to put this.. If wrongly posted.. In advance I am sorry… Thank you for all you do..

UPDATE:

I actually got a pass from the theater manager and saw JR: Shadow Recruit.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME. What a lousy piece of story-telling. Written and directed for 13-year-olds. I mean LOUSY. Unrealist. Childish. Insulting. It was directed by Kenneth Branagh AND I WILL NEVER GO SEE ONE OF HIS MOVIES EVER AGAIN.

Keep in mind, it’s not the money you’ll regret spending on this movie, it’s your time. You’ll want your time back. Branagh must be one of those directors who started out by directing music videos for MTV because he writes and directs for the brain-dead. The screenwriters, Adam Cozad and David Koepp also share in the shame.

That subterranean rumbling you hear is Clancy rolling over in his grave.

So now my Directors’ “Do Not See” list includes . . .

1) Oliver Stone

2) Quentin Tarantino

3) Sean Penn

4) Kenneth Branagh

“Maybe Gay Obama could at least author a guest column? For example, he could use his incredibly complex brain (he claims to be a “graduate” of “Princeton Law School”) to analyze the profundities and power relationships of the “Twilight” movies that he so enjoys.”

Wow. Anyone other than a 13-year-old girl who likes the Twilight movies is truly dain-bread and has no intellectual credibility whatsoever. It doesn’t matter what school he or she graduated from.

“In his “The Sum of All Fears,” Islamic terrorists detonate a nuclear bomb in the US (at the Super Bowl) to drive the U.S. and the Soviet Union into war with each other.”

I don’t know how it is in the book, but in the movie the source of the nuclear bomb is … the JOOOZ! Yep. It’s an Israeli nuke that was lost in the Sinai years earlier, discovered by Bedouin, and sold to those Nazis. (Israelis assumedly just forgot about that nuke. Yeah, right…) So ultimately it’s Israel’s fault that Baltimore is nuked.

I’d seen Op Center on TV many years ago, where they also portrayed Israelis in a bad light. Israeli “intelligence” in the US consisted of the President’s Jewish mistress, and there was a rogue Israeli agent armed and loose in New York City. Thinking this might be Clancy’s attitude toward Jews and Israelis, I never read the books. And the only Clancy movies I really enjoyed were “Hunt for Red October” and “Patriot Games”.

RiDC: That part is the same in the book. The bomb is an Israeli one captured by Muslims. Good point. DS

Raymond in DC on January 19, 2014 at 10:57 pm

Raymond, you make a lot of good points. One thing’s for sure: You know your Tom Clancy.

My personal favorite Clancy novel is “Rainbow Six” which I surmise was never adapted to film because Hollywood couldn’t figure out a way to mangle it in a way that would make it politically correct. The subject was environmental terrorism.

“Patriot Games” and “Red October” were both fair film adaptations, I agree, but of those two, I only genuinely liked “Red October.” To me, Alec Baldwin was a perfect Jack Ryan–coolly logical, subtly intuitive, and self-contained. Harrison Ford, whatever his merit might be in playing blustery and sentimental characters like Han Solo and Indiana Jones (apparent cynics but with gushy hearts of gold), not so much.

skzion on January 20, 2014 at 2:15 pm

I saw the new Jack Ryan movie and found it mostly unobjectionable (except for the points Debbie makes which I’ll discuss in a moment). It’s a classic spy story told in a style reminding me of Cold War movies in the fifties and sixties (like “Ice Station Zebra,” and “From Russia with Love” for example). Jack Ryan is a true patriot who is loyal to his wife, doesn’t use drugs, doesn’t swear a lot as if he’s trying to prove something, works on Wall Street where he’s comfortable making money, and doesn’t scorn those who argue that we need a strong national defense including a smart NSA and CIA (this last point is in sharp contrast to the Bourne movies where the CIA is assumed to be corrupt and fascist). From a conservative point of view, what’s not to like?

Also, an answer to the criticism that Hollywood butchers Clancy’s works might be that this isn’t a true Clancy work–it’s just a story involving a Clancy character. What happened with the adaptation of “Sum of All Fears” is disgusting, but there’s no original novel here to mutilate.

For these reasons, I found the movie fairly entertaining and it had enough support for my conservative values to make it at least pleasantly tolerable.

The issue of what Hollywood has done to Clancy’s works as a whole, though, is larger than the more modest goal of evaluating the merits of this single film. That’s why Debbie’s columns are so unique and admirable. She hits the nail on the head every time. She understands the significance of larger context. Where are our nation’s conservative intellectuals that they won’t grapple with issues like the ones Debbie articulates in her column? (In fairness, Kyle Smith at the New York Post recently beat up on “Philomena” for reasons having to do with larger cultural context. Good for him, even though Debbie does this every week for every film.)

As for the villain in the Jack Ryan film, it’s relevant that he’s described in the story as a Russian billionaire, and Russia is explicitly called a “modern Wild West” (of economic freedom). Presumably all the harm coming out of Russia in this case is due to the fact that the country is economically unregulated. So even with a fairly conservative hero, the film still couldn’t resist taking potshots at unregulated free markets.

I wonder what the outcry from liberal critics would be like if the film “12 Years a Slave” was altered from the original book so that it was no longer about emotionally driven situations from the South. “Don’t you dare alter the perfection of the original!” critics would shout in fury; yet they have little problem accepting the mangling of works of Clancy and Crichton until they are practically unrecognizable.

Burke on January 20, 2014 at 2:05 pm

Thanks for the review. I will not go to see this movie and will spread the word. Imagine during WW2 the movies afraid to portray the Nazi’s as villains?
