Paul Walker: Excessive Hype Over Mediocre Actor Who Was Good-Looking; James Dean Again

By Debbie Schlussel

Yes, it’s sad that Paul Walker, a very good looking actor, died in a fiery crash. I was shocked when I read about it in the newspaper, Sunday morning, mostly because it goes to show that life is short no matter who you are. I’m sorry he died and feel for his family. But the hype over his death and the beatification of this guy, as if he’s some sort of saint, isn’t just approaching excessive. It’s well beyond that. It’s ridiculous. And it’s all because of his looks, not his acting.

It’s James Dean, the redux. They drove similar cars and died nearly the same way.

paulwalker

As a movie critic, I’ve seen many of Walker’s movies. Many of them went straight to DVD. And one of those that wasn’t straight to DVD, “Takers” (read my review), had a horrible message. The movie applauded violence by bank robbers (one of whom was Walker) against police. It was a “Yay, Cop Killing!” movie. Walker was an average, maybe even substandard, actor. And Hollywood caught on. Yes, he had model good looks (though he looked better when he was younger and was approaching haggard-dom). But good-looking guys are a dime a dozen there, and Walker was cast in the Fast and Furious movies, but little else that was a hit. And the most recent Fast and Furious movie was an absolute joke (read my review). Walker was a B-list actor at the most. He recently played a character called “Raw Dog,” in some movie called, “Pawn Shop Chronicles.” Probably a bomb.

And the way he lived his life wasn’t exactly stellar. Yes, he raised money for charity. That’s what celebs do to raise their profiles. But he fathered a daughter out of wedlock, never marrying the mother, and was “dating” (euphemism) a girlfriend who was just a few years older than his 15-year-old daughter. At 40, at the time of his death, Walker’s girlfriend was 23, and they’d been “dating” since she was a 16-year-old and he was 33. That’s kinda creepy and just a few months difference from sex offender/pedophile status. Just saying. Hmmm . . . where’s Chris Hansen when ya need him?

He clearly lived a fast life. And, while it’s not always true that if you lead a fast life you’ll die early (Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are still with us), it’s a pretty good predictor that if you live a risky life, you’re putting that life in danger. He made a movie–several of them–as his star vehicle, the premise of which is all about risky driving in fancy fast sports cars at illegal speeds. And isn’t it ironic that this is how he died. Yes, I know that Walker was not driving. But he did drive a fancy Porsche sports car (just like James Dean) and you know that, being into fast cars and making movies about driving them, he probably drove at dangerous speeds. And if you get into a V-10, 610-horsepower Porsche to have your racing friend drive it, you know you ain’t gonna be going the speed limit.

Yes, I liked a couple of the Fast and Furious movies, particularly “Fast Five” (read my review), but that doesn’t blind me to the utter irony of the whole thing. And I’m amazed at how this B-list actor is the top of the news and hyped as such a great guy. I suppose I shouldn’t be.

James Dean is remembered as a good actor (and definitely was a good deal better than Paul Walker), but would he have been idolized and highly rated had he died after a full life? Oh, and he died driving a Porsche Spyder at dangerous speeds. Sound familiar? And, solely because of his death at a young age, his estate is still making gazillions off of licensed t-shirts, mugs, and other stuff with his face on ’em.

Reader Lisa:

Explain to me WHY people care that this kid from Fast and Furious died? Oh how shocking that a guy who starred in movies about DAREDEVIL DRIVING died in a speed-related crash??

Ok, its sad when people lose their lives, but people…he wasn’t Marlon Brando…I also read that his girlfriend is 22 or 23. And he started dating her when she was 16. Ewwwwwwww, cant find a gal your own age??

It reminds me also of the Kennedy’s. Daredevils…John John HAD to fly that plane in the wind and rain. Gotta have that rush. Didn’t one of them ski into a tree or something too? Not saying you cant enjoy life. But there is a limit. You make 6 movies about daredevil driving, and you surround yourself with those kinds of people. You know how guys are. Probably accumulated friends because he had a “dope” car. He wasn’t a passenger in a Camry, it was a souped up Porche. A guy driving that isnt going to drive it the speed limit. Something about art imitating life? He made all those movies and maybe surrounded himself with that type of lifestyle.

Exactly. That’s America. Our vain society worships, lauds, and mourns mediocrity, so long as it has a pretty and famous face on it.

And now we see the James Deaning of Paul Walker, whose most famous gig, these days, other than the Fast/Furious stuff was as the supermodel for men’s cologne (Davidoff’s Cool Water). Is getting oiled up and rolling in the sand acting?

Imagine what the world does when Kim Kardashian dies. Or her overrated, racist, nutjob sperm donor, Kanye West. Oy, perish the thought.

Yes, Paul Walker wasn’t Kim Kardashian level. But he was no Albert Schweitzer, either.

I looked at the wreckage and estimated the speed near 100 mph

My only thought was

“I am glad they didn’t take out an innocent bystander especially a child in the neighborhood.”

Cleaning up the gene pool? Just saying …

I just read:

“Santa Clarita, California (CNN) — Drag racing may have been involved in the fiery crash that killed “Fast & Furious” actor Paul Walker on Saturday, an investigator said Monday.”

I am glad he is gone. Society is better off without him.

Darrell L. Hicks on December 2, 2013 at 5:17 pm

I hardly can imagine a more detestable comment about a just-deceased person. Neither Walker’s career nor his private life did you any harm. Aside from the fact that he was a good actor — okay, not a great one, but a good one — he wasn’t even the driver.

Post your sadistic bile on Town Hall or some other like-minded site.

Okay. You can be dubbed the loser’s apologist.

      Congrats!

Let’s see who remembers you fondly, if at all.

Hey, could you possibly “Seek” another web site, or do you enjoy wasting bandwidth? Surely you are aware that Debbie is persona non grata at Townhall, Not So FOX(y)-News, and many other so called right wing and conservative outlets. Know why?

TRUTH, BABEE!!! NOBODY LIKES TRUTH, THE COLD, HARD, UNVARNISHED TRUTH!!! Debbie speaks more truth in one day than most pundits at Townhall, etal, do in a year. And you might wish to “Seek” to read the article again. Debbie expressed her clear cut condolences to his loved ones on his untimely death. This is Debbie’s Lair, and she can say what she wants.

Anyone who doesn’t like it, should not waste their time, my time or the other readers on this site, as well Debbie’s time, reading their dissatisfaction. Maybe you can go post it on that special page at Facebook where the Peanut Brigade resides, and get them to come here again, all two of them, and their 51,679 aliases. That was fun. I wouldn’t mind spending a night teasing the crap out of them again.

By the way, did you get “Seek” from that Britney Spears song? Don’t mind me, I’m just The Resident Dumb Blond(e). I STILL don’t know if it’s chicken or fish.

Oh, and if you want an education on why the human race gets its dander up about unvarnished truth, it’s in the Bible. Satan is the father of lies, and the God of this world. Quite unfortunate, but that’s Basic Training for ya. If you’re looking for feel good crap, most DEFINITELY, “Seek” another web site.

Alfredo from Puerto Rico on December 2, 2013 at 9:57 pm

I wasn’t begruding Debbie’s right to comment on her own site. Get real. I was pointing to the utter lack of class by a certain poster who wasn’t just bemoaning the abundance of attention to Walker, but actually celebrating his death. Paul Walker, by any reasonable standard of those in the public eye, was a decent person. Why don’t you spend some time in the limelight, pal? It would be a hoot to see what your reputation looks like.

For the record, I’m not much one for Britney Spears. Got it, schmuckface?

Seek on December 4, 2013 at 5:19 pm

I know exactly what you were doing, and I didn’t exactly have a huge problem with what Mr. Hicks said. His entire post was somewhat tongue in cheek, no? It was sort of in line with the commentary in Debbie’s article. This guy wasn’t exactly a household name, he lives a life of questionable moral fiber, doesn’t exactly contribute much with the possible exception of this charity work, which sounds like a great thing if the reports are true, and I don’t think Mr. Hicks really said anything all that wrong. I don’t think Mr. Hicks post was really “celebrating” his death, it was too tongue in cheek for that.

As for your other comments, don’t lecture me on what I need to do in order to gain perspective in this life. I’m probably old enough to be at least your father, if not grandfather and I can tell you THIS much. I don’t need to spend time in the limelight in order to know anything about my reputation, character, or anything else. If I want to see someone who I am NOT particularly proud of, or someone whom I have NO reason to have that many positive thoughts about in ANY way, shape, or form, I need only . . .

          look in the MIRROR.

And too bad you obviously spend your whole life so on edge you couldn’t see the humor in my Britney Spears comment, someone I also don’t think much of. If you and some others could lighten up a bit, we could have less tension around here. You didn’t need to go playing Debbie Schlussel Web Site Police. That’s why I chided you.

Lighten up, please. I have shared meals and joints with geeks, gangsters and everything in between in my life, rich, poor, name it. If Debbie thought Mr. Hicks comments was so bad, she could have smacked him, removed his post and/or banned him. She’s done it before to a bunch of others. Let her police her own web site, or maybe join us in policing the site the next time the Peanut Allergy Society/Muslim Defense League comes on here.

friendly 999 reaper on December 4, 2013 at 3:02 pm

Ever driven a Porsche? A Carrera GT is a fearsome, legitimate super-car. This ain’t your Daddy’s average rear-engine Porsche. This http://www.hoganwong.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/2005-Porsche-Carrera-GT-Rear-Fascia.jpg is a 2005 Carerra GT.

The Carrera GT is powered by a 5.7 litre V10 engine producing 612 hp. Capable on a Track of 205 mph.

Having driven a Porsche with all that weight hanging over the back end (motor and transaxle) it is a handful under hard acceleration to keep the read end from swapping places with the front end under any kind of heavy right foot maneuver. Standard daddy-class Porsche’s will come around you so quick you can’t blink that fast. A Carrera-GT is a like an Exocet compared to a rowboat Porsche.

So, since the car was new to Rodas and he had his pal and client with him, I highly suspect a little horsing around and wham! 612 horses swapped ends in a mighty blast of Oh Sh** and striking the pole in the middle of a powered up flat spin, literally cut the car in half bursting the fuel cell and fuel lines.

Tragic.

Jack on December 2, 2013 at 5:19 pm

How can you diss this guy, Paul seemed like a cool person to hang with, idk, but my favorite movie of his was “Running Scared” now that flick was nice.

Big D on December 2, 2013 at 5:47 pm

Yeah, that was an underrated flick. If I recall, Vera Farmiga (before she became well-known) played an abused Russian mob wife in that one.

Seek on December 3, 2013 at 12:05 am

I drive a 580 horsepower, #4,000 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor on the street, and have driven it at high speed on Gingerman Raceway. Trouble comes quickly if you are not cautious, and a good, experienced driver.

The Porsche had a MSRP of $448,000 USD, was rated at 612hp, and weighed ~#3,000 (empty).

Dale Zalaoras on December 2, 2013 at 5:51 pm

I’m fortunate enough to have never heard of him nor have seen his picture before this news item. He sounded like a real chump.

DS_ROCKS! on December 2, 2013 at 5:56 pm

I always thought he was very handsome but after learning about a 33 year old dating (dead @ 40) a 16 year old, it just made him seem like a super-creep to me. Why wasn’t his “romance” labeled like Doug Hutchenson & his now estranged, bimbo wife Courtney Stodden (I called what would happen there but I won’t be rewarded as the next “Miss Cleo”…a 2 day old baby could have come up with the same prediction)??

I wanna know why it was covered up, and covered up it WAS. Also, his ex-girlfriend is 28…if he was dating the 16-YO (now 23) for 7 years without marriage (LOLOL!!!!) that makes her pret-tay, pret-tay young too when they “dated”. I think this dead pervert liked ’em young. Gross.

Sorry, I call out females (especially teachers) for the same pervo behaviour so I am gonna call out this irresponsible drag-racer, too. He practically bragged about not marrying his baby-mama (what a man!). If you think I am harsh on him, don’t worry, I view the stupid, young girls even more harshly than the no-character men (using them) being no-character men.

I know he was super good-looking but NOBODY likes being used. I’m sure it’s fun at first but if one has dignity, it becomes a heavy burden to chuck it aside as the years roll on…

Skunky on December 2, 2013 at 6:08 pm

Honestly, after visiting your site, im more afraid of you than any “pervert”.

Dan on December 2, 2013 at 6:23 pm

Thanks Dan. I can only wonder of the age of the little girls and boys you like. I’m proud to be the opposite of you and I’m glad you pointed out the distinction.

I guess this is gonna be the thread where peeps pull out their skewed “religious” crap and try to be apologists for creepy behaviour. It’s a young thread right now and we already got a goon squad forming.

I have standards and values and I don’t use my religion to make excuses for the bad behaviour of others. You so-called religious frauds who do that give the anti-religious much grist for the mill they like to use against you and frankly, I am sick of sticking up for your lame arses because you pervert religion more than the stupid religious haters do. They are just suffering for narcissism, but what’s YOUR excuse???

John on December 2, 2013 at 6:15 pm

I have an important question: If Paul Walker is being “James Dean’d,” how would you explain the similar beatification of another mediocre actor, Cory Monteith of the TV series Glee, whose death was under different circumstances than Walker’s but you get the idea. What would that be called, if not “James Deaning”? Just curious . . .

ConcernedPatriot on December 2, 2013 at 9:00 pm

CP, you are correct (I checked, just to be sure): Debbie has not commented here about Monteith. I’ll go out on a limb and say that people who’ve been around here for a while should know that Debbie is selective in whom she criticizes. While I didn’t know who the heck Monteith was before he died, even I learned enough to decide that he was a sad case. What negative can one say about a fellow from a crappy home who struggled with drug addiction in early teen years, who then diligently sought help and turned his life around, who flew around doing low-profile individual charity work when he hit it big–and who then relapsed and died suddenly, which apparently happens often when someone who is off the sauce for a while does a hit that would have been standard before.

He didn’t “date” 16-year-olds or sire bastards.

I realize it’s easier to judge Debbie on what she writes rather than on what she doesn’t write.

skzion on December 3, 2013 at 5:33 am

The point I was trying to raise about Monteith (although, as you noted, his lifestyle issues were not identical to Walker’s, thus I asked whether there was another term other than “James Deaning” for him) was the “excessive hype over mediocre actor” part. Especially when you have his Glee co-star, Lea Michele, going uber-weepy as if on cue at the mere mention of his name, as if he were some kind of g-d. But this – and the inordinate attention paid to Walker’s death in proportion to other, more important items in the world – is what we end up getting when you have a “news”[sic] media that, due to the excessive mergers and consolidations over the last several years (i.e. ABC with Disney, NBC with Universal, CBS with Paramount, and I didn’t even get to Fox whose very name is a shorthand for the parent movie studio), has become all but intertwined and interlinked with Hollywood. And no room for anything resembling investigative journalism anymore (even though the liberal media, way before this trend of Hollywoodization of the news, had reduced “investigative journalism” to a self-parody).

ConcernedPatriot on December 4, 2013 at 9:01 am

This fellow went to a dining establishment in Solvang, CA with his enterage. A young female friend, recently orphaned at 18, waited on them. Paul walker talked to her only through his assistant. They seemed satisfied with the service, voicing no complaints. They totally stiffed her for the tip. They didn’t leave a red cent! He was a theif who treated those with less than he with disregard and contempt.

Matt on December 2, 2013 at 10:55 pm

Well Matt, it’s not really nice to WISH death on anyone, really, but I guarantee you, if all the people that pay attention to them stopped, . . .

you’d get your wish, figuratively speaking, but it would have the same effect. They’d go back to being nothing. It’s like Mariah Carey when she tweeted that selfie of her huge FAKE tits in that black lace bra in a dimly lit bedroom to her husband, . . .

AND her 14 MILLION FOLLOWERS!!! Mariah Carey isn’t the problem. It’s her 14 million followers. Same with the “K” Klan. What we really need to wish for is the death of American stupidity and gullibility. Just as I said 35 years ago when Social Security deductions went over 5%, greatest nation on earth, my ass. And if we are, that doesn’t say much for the world.

Big D on December 3, 2013 at 1:04 am

BigD, when you say “came back” on this web site, I hope that just means you were at work, and had to log off for a while. No sense leaving entirely. This web site is like a cross section of America, the world actually. You’ll find all types here, and you’ll also find that the internet is full of “tough guys.” It’s amazing how many people can kick Muhammad Ali in his prime’s ass, or Bruce Lee at his best, from behind his keyboard. Absolutely astounding.

You’re a smart guy, and a lot more than that, if you are the person that your posts seem to indicate you are. Unless you are totally playing us, I believe that BigD is the man behind the posts, word for word.

So, in the immortal words of Sly And The Family Stone(d), “don’t let the bastards get you down.” I have recently learned that is not original on Sly’s part, he used the quote from someone to make a point in the song.

So, I’m making this point to you. I don’t agree with everything Debbie says or her approach to everything. I also love my family and my friends. But I don’t agree with everything about their lives or everything they say. I love Rush Limbaugh, but I think he is blind to certain things, and I have disagreements with certain things he says.

As you go through life, and you land on certain lily pads in the great pond, lick up what you can, what is valuable, and leave what is not valuable to you. When you make the leap to other lily pads, because what frog can sit on the same lily pad all its life, do not forget you are always free to revisit lily pads you have jumped from. There may be things of value back there, and they may be worth revisiting.

So, here’s hoping “came back” meant you had to leave to cook dinner for the wife and kids, . . .

    or something like that.

I’m probably one of the youngest readers on Miss Debbie’s site, & therefore always kinda liked Paul Walker’s movies. I dug him in “Varsity Blues,” “The Skulls,” & of course, all the F & F movies. And while I also agree with Miss Debbie that Walker certainly was NO James Dean, I was never NOT at least MILDLY entertained by his flicks.

As for the manner of his death, while it most certainly is tragic, its also kinda stupid. When you race cars on city streets & ridiculous speeds, you’re just BEGGING for disaster. My favorite race car driver of all time, Dale Earnhardt Sr. was a LIFELONG professional racer. And died doing exactly that. The difference was, he was in turn 4 at Daytona, in a controlled enviornment, not on a damned city street.

Cicero's Ghost (NB) on December 3, 2013 at 9:23 am

Not having seen any of his movies, I had no idea who Paul Walker was until the last day of his life. James Dean’s acting in “East of Eden” was one of the greatest performances of all time.

James Dean stopped at a restaurant for a slice of pie and a drink in his 1955-356 Porsche. I think the restaurant was called TIPS (or SHIPS). It was the last thing he ate before dying in Salinas a couple hours later. The place is long gone but it was very near THIS crash site.

Debbie dear no wonder the screwballs over at Town Hall, Twitchy, etc don’t like you. You spring the truth on people like a bear trap or like Rosie O’Donnell on a plate of doughnuts. I did like the first two Fast and Furious movies with Walker but that was it for me. I even liked him in “Into the Blue” with the female version of himself Jessica Alba. I mean she’s cute but her acting sucks and she’s a flaming lib idiot. I read somewhere yesterday that racing buffs in Kawliferina considered Paul one of them. Debbie is on to something when she that if you live a certain life it may get you in the end. She also did mention that this is not always true. I mean look at her examples Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. When God said let there be light Richards plugged the lamp in and Jagger turned it on. Those two have been around a long time. To the idiot trolls crawling out of the wood work like roaches. If you cared to read (I know it’s hard for libtrolls) Debbie did offer condolences to Walker and his family. No one here wished him dead. Although his dating a 16 year old while he was 33 leaves me wondering about WTF was he thinking. What doofus parents would let their teenaged daughter date a much older man anyway. Oh nevermind. I guess money talks and rich perverts walk(and paw your young daughters). Paul Walker was a marginal actor that had a handsome face with questionable relationship skills. I feel sorry for his family but James Dean he ain’t. Not even close.

@Alfredo, no bro, I told you a while ago, this is never personal, lol. I “came back” after seeing my team (Saints) get destroyed yesterday. That was bad. I like this site, I learn things, and you also know I don’t agree with D.S. all the time, but she’s good people, but I still throw a jab or two her way when I don’t agree, but its all good, this is never personal.

One thing that stood out to me regarding this topic, and people who have accused and think that D.S is bigoted, she pretty much destroyed this pretty white male character, she discovered some things that should be noted and she didn’t hold back and that’s shows me she is balanced in her lambasting.

@ Skunky, your comments were germane to the topic.

Big D on December 3, 2013 at 12:57 pm

Exactly, and I sympathize on the Saints. They are one of my favorite teams. I remember Archie, even back in college. One of the first quarterbacks to get a mike put in his helmet for TV purposes, if I’m not mistaken.

Glad to hear we still have The Founder and Five Card General of B.U.A.N.

Alfredo from Puerto Rico on December 3, 2013 at 1:20 pm

Just read a story that Walker was browsing for jewelry in a jewelry store at the same time as a soldier who had just finished his first tour of duty in Iraq. The soldier was looking at engagement rings with his fiancée. The pair saw a ring set they liked, but it was way too expensive and boasted a hefty $10,000 price tag.

In comes Walker. The actor called the store’s manager and told him to put the ring that the couple was looking at “on his tab,” but to keep his identity hidden. He promptly walked out of the store. According to the store owner, the store never told the couple that Walker was the man behind the purchase, and nobody ever knew the story until now.

DTrain on December 3, 2013 at 1:52 pm

    DTrain,

    I don’t believe you.

This is TOTALLY OUT OF CHARACTER for Walker.

He was LIFE SUPPORT FOR A PENIS.

Darrell L. Hicks on December 3, 2013 at 5:36 pm

You’re a freaking delinquent.. Paul Walker happened to be a very good man in all areas. People do not just miss him because of his Looks? It even looks to me that some people are happy he is dead because they happen to be JEALOUS on his looks. everyone who ever met or talked to this guy said he was very down to earth and an all around nice guy and he actually seemed like a saint to me. He was actually leaving a CHARITY event just before he died. You should do some research on this guy before you start dissing him.. Dumb Bitch.

Vincent on December 3, 2013 at 3:56 pm

Vincent, PLEASE wake up and stop worshiping celebrities. Everyone with a functioning brain knows that celebrities, as Debbie mentions, do these “charity” events for publicity. It’s all “Me, me, me, look how good I am.” If Paul Walker were TRULY charitable, he would have have married the mother of his daughter and raised her in a nuclear family–instead of having a “girlfriend” his daughter’s age.

Oh, and truly charitable people do not encourage going 200 miles an hour in residential roads. Paul Walker was a grown up, shallow man-child that can exist successfully only in Hollywood, and who is worshiped by shallow people.

JM on December 3, 2013 at 4:07 pm

Awwwww, Vinnie. Don’t cry. I am sure there is room in your bedroom for a Paul Walker poster next to your “Chachi” from “Joanie Loves Chachi” poster. I know which one you’ll be kissing each night.

D’Train, I’m glad you know how to keep your eyes on “priorities”. You’re an example of the rotting of the American mind getting all misty over a Hollywood dude who could easily pay for an engagement ring for a poor couple but never wanted to purchase any rings for the YOUNG girls he was “dating” (even after he put a baby in one).

Sorry chumps, I *think* about the child denied a proper FATHER and the dopey Baby-Mama who saw soon enough she was good enough to knock up but not to marry.

Now what is easier and more noble to do…easily purchase wedding rings when you got the scratch or doing the right thing and marrying and providing a daughter with an intact American family?

You wowsers who are apologists for this cretin didn’t even care about his penchant for young teens either. Bet you if he looked like Bill Maher you would.

How very far America has fallen…

Skunky on December 3, 2013 at 4:15 pm

Hmmmmm…..Skunky, I wonder if you have ever studied the great men in America’s history (including the Founding Fathers). Many had mistresses, multiple families, children out of wedlock etc. If I’m going to edify these men for their part in making this nation great and overlook their sins, why would I want to come down hard on some Hollywood celebrity?

Yes, I wish he would have married his child’s mother. Yes, I wish his azz would have kept his hands off a 16-year old girl. Yes, I wish he would have married his girlfriend. But since when is mourning someone’s death condoning how they lived their lives??? So now everyone has to pass a litmus test before we express sadness at their deaths? GOD will handle whatever eternal consequences they have coming.

DTrain on December 3, 2013 at 4:49 pm

I’m so sure you cared about allllll those thangs, DTrain. That’s why you posted about some stupid engagement ring for a poor couple.

And I can go all the way back to Genesis to show bad behaviour. We are suppose to LEARN from it!

You led with what impressed you. And it didn’t impress me. At. All.

Skunky on December 3, 2013 at 5:51 pm

G Mac, you are truly why our country has gone so downhill. Are you serious? What is not ‘out of control” about a 40 year old teenager going 200 miles an hour on public roads? Also, that is sad if your nephew wanted to study marine biology JUST because a celebrity he never met did. Most normal teenagers decide to study subjects in college because they have good role models at home, were inspired by a teacher, love the subject, know what they want in life, etc.

But your nephew is inspired by a Hollywood star. It is not looking good for America.

I heard that Paul Walker had started munching on a bag of peanuts that he’d scored on a recent flight. Not knowing that his buddy, Roger Rodas, was critically allergic, Rodas immediately started convulsing from inhaling peanut molecules, slammed into a tree and they both died in a fiery maelstrom.

Once again – peanuts: Satan’s tools.

Sorry, and no disrespect to the memory of Paul Walker, but Walker is no James Dean. Dean was not just a teen idol, but was actually a first-rate actor. This is clearly evident in his best work, e.g., Rebel Without a Cause, East of Eden, and Giant.

James Dean’s remarkable talents are evident even in his earliest work. Check out this TV show clip featuring James Dean when he was just getting started in the movies, along with another very competent actor, Ronald Reagan.

Ralph Adamo on December 3, 2013 at 9:01 pm

For those who have popped up to defend Mr. Walker on the basis of charitable donations, this has been a favorite “mask” of those who seek to cover anything from slightly questionable behavior to downright nefarious deeds since the beginning of time.

Yes, athletes who are regularly criticized for performance enhancing drugs give millions to charity, visit kids in hospitals, etc. Major weight hard drug dealers and hit men fund community projects, hand out $100 bills as though they were pennies, and earn the adoration of many members of their communities.

The good works that people do, and the softness that may reside deep in the heart of someone who has rubbed out eleven people in cold blood does not excuse their bad behavior.

Debbie Schlussel, among other things, puts out a body of work that includes social commentary. I have stated it, and so have others, that she led off her column with complete coverage, INCLUDING CONDOLENCES, for this virtual unknown, but obviously beloved member of the Hollywood community.

So, having said thus, the next time any of the people who are complaining about this column turn their back on a favorite home run hitter or defensive tackle who just tested positive, remember a few things first. He may have lifted the spirits of a kid with cancer last month, or funded the building of a community playground in a ghetto neighborhood, perhaps flown overseas to help children with malaria in Africa.

Debbie covered all bases. Leave her alone, and go fix the rest of the world before attacking Debbie for her rightful commentary on this young man’s life. And yes, he was young to me, because he was plenty young enough to be my son.

Alfredo from Puerto Rico on December 4, 2013 at 9:38 am

Say what you will about Walker’s acting ability, but his charity was apparently genuine. He didn’t just raise money for charity; he started his own group in response to his personal experience volunteering in Haiti. I doubt the authoress or many of the responders here has so directly answered a call for help from desperate people.

He also didn’t have to anonymously buy a serviceman and his betrothed their engagement rings, but the Santa Barbara jeweler has confirmed that he did exactly that. If he were trying to raise his profile, he wouldn’t have kept it a secret for 10 years.

But, I guess some of us are happy only when being unchristian to others and speaking ill of our neighbors. If you’re going to do that, at least make sure you’re telling the truth.

Footwork on December 4, 2013 at 5:21 pm

This is in response to the above “negative” remarks concerning the tragic death of Paul Walker which were ignited by Debbie Schlussel’s uniformed opinion. While I will continue to support and admire her depiction of the classic liberal and by challenging them with truthfulness, she has lost some credibility with me when it comes to her knee jerk reaction and negative characterization of Paul Walker the man and not Paul Walker the actor.

Obviously there seems to be bewilderment without explanation concerning the driving force behind the attention and outpouring grief to Paul’s horrific accident.

Let me introduce myself. I am a conservative–registered Republican but classified as a conservative. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley; specifically Sunland Tujunga. I worked for the founding partner of the first and largest entertainment law firm worldwide for 13 years and thereafter other celebrity-based industries. I have come face-to-face with countless celebrities in business and private sector. I am probably the most cynical person when it comes to Hollywood idolatry; in fact, I describe myself as being a “reverse” snob. However, it is because of Hollywood that many were able to become acquainted with a super star “off screen.”

Paul Walker grew up in Sunland, my same home town. If you are familiar with its location and history you will know that Sunland is identified as being non assuming and tucked away from pretense and notoriety. The best way to describe my own childhood environment would be in comparison to small town Mayberry, with a God fearing and pro-American population grounded in traditional values. Although the town has changed considerably it is still the same simple town where Paul was raised and where his father still resides.

It is unfortunate that you have all jumped on Debbie’s misinformed bandwagon that assumes the mourning of Paul’s passing is nothing more than the loss of a super star celebrity–with good looks. You obviously have not read the commentaries by his friends and colleagues who actually knew the man behind the flawless good looks. Have you even bothered to get inside the story of WHY this man would become headline news as far away as South Africa–after all, others have suffered tragic deaths but why the big hoopla over one star that many people didn’t even know existed and who others considered a mediocre actor? (Although I encourage you to see the movie “Hours” where Paul plays an entirely different role from a fast driving crime fighter)? After all, Paul was not a Brad Pitt who to no one’s surprise would attract the usual adoring groupies mourning the loss of a handsome iconic movie star married to one of the sexiest women in the industry. No; Paul was everything that Hollywood is NOT. In fact, in one of his interviews he referred to Hollywood as “garbage” and I challenge you to find any derogatory stories concerning him in the tabloids or other publications–either credible or perceived as credible–during his career.

Sure, Paul sowed his oats in his earlier years; he was a guy–a great looking guy. But he also was transparent when reflecting on the fast and furious lifestyle he led but not embarrassed to condemn some of the choices he made. But it is significant to note that even then he remained a “genuine” person that related to the importance of family and hard-working generations which were and still are the backbone of this country; in other words, the retired man across the street sitting on the porch engaging with family, friends and neighbors. Paul himself was a modest man–he didn’t seek self-gratification or individual glory. He didn’t boast of what he personally gave back to the world, both physically and monetarily including his unselfish good deeds that touched so many people.

Paul wasn’t a touchy-feely Oprah Winfrey; he didn’t pat himself on the back and publicly boast “hey, look at what a generous and compassionate person I am” while monopolizing on loosely using God’s name to substantiate the definition of a “good” person.

If you know any aspect of legitimate Christianity, you would know that humility and heartfelt giving is an indisputable attribute. As a conservative Christian on the outside looking in, based on your comments along with Debbie’s, you have validated the very same accusations made by liberals of conservatives which is being hardened, non-compassionate and closed-minded. Perhaps if I didn’t know the real Paul Walker I may react the same as you; particularly because I am so emotionally detached from Hollywood and celebrity worship. But Debbie’s commentary and some of your remarks has taught me an important lesson. Not to assume that because someone is associated with an industry that is a breeding ground for the moral-less majority who mimic a lifestyle that is robotic, non-thinking, glory seeking, immoral and despicable, does not automatically make them swimmers in Hollywood’s cesspool–even though I can count the few exceptions on one hand. The entertainment business only corrupts if we allow ourselves to be corrupted; entertainment in itself is not the culprit, it is the willingness to sell your soul by compromising your values to be on top which does not describe Paul Walker.

In closing, Debbie’s comparison of Paul Walker to James Dean is outrageous. How can someone make that kind of comparison without knowing either person intimately and lumping them together. Why; because they both liked cars–fast cars? My dad had a Corvette in the fifties that he drove as intended, fast. Does that make my dad another clone of James Dean? The contrast between the two is as distant between the continents of North America and Africa. Shame on Debbie for her irresponsible assumption.

Paul Walker was an endangered species–he worked for, but was not a part of mainstream Hollywood; he valued family and humbly appreciated his success without taking credit. We grieve for his untimely passing and will miss him–yes, even for his entertaining roles in F & F that the entire family could enjoy together. But mostly for his role as a man of which are becoming more and more scarce.

Donna Currie on December 4, 2013 at 10:56 pm

I have noticed the extreme outpouring of dismay over the death of this young man. And I have noticed that there is mention of his charitable work being sincere and diligent.

Ms. Currie, your name is also quite familiar, perhaps because I spent a long time working in the legal profession, perhaps for other reasons.

Hey, cool, no problem on your comments above, but you got some things wrong. Where is the “superstar celebrity” you mention?

(i) It is exactly in part because he WASN’T a superstar that gave way to Debbie’s article.;

(ii) Palestina Jolie is NOT a good looking woman. She is woefully thin and has had at least one set of implants during her career, prior to the DM. I have suspected her for a prescription junkie for MANY years, in part because her eyes are always pinned. Someone get that woman off the drugs, give her some Haagen Dazs and two Pastrami sandwiches, . . . every day for a month.;

(iii) Debbie did NOT compare Mr. Walker to James Dean. She referred to the beatification of this man as though he were a James Dean-like figure, despite his lack of a supporting body of work.

All things considered, sounds like Mr. Walker WAS indeed a pretty good guy in some respects. That doesn’t mean that if Debbie knew some of the things that may be true which are now coming out, that she need lay off her social commentary. This country has an epidemic of people that are “dating” way out of their age range. Just another example of the degradation of our society. And let’s not put everything Debbie said about him in his distant past. He started up with a 16 year old seven years ago. That’s not ancient history.

Alfredo from Puerto Rico on December 4, 2013 at 11:20 pm

Oh wow Alfredo. Is that the best you can come up with–dating somebody much younger? So if the girlfriend were 30 and dating Paul at age 47, would that too raise an eyebrow? It is still a 17 year span between their ages.

If you read through all the comments you would see that Paul knew it would be difficult dating a 16 year old but also explained that they fell in love. What is the formula Afredo for choosing WHO you fall in love with and avoiding WHO NOT to fall in love with? Let’s see; if you fall in love but your ages are not acceptable by society’s standards, you should turn away and pretend the feelings don’t exist (Let’s also not forget that at 16 her parents would have had something to say about her dating, but I guess it was entirely Paul’s responsibility); my reference to a “super star”– although I have no idea what you are talking about–makes Paul less notable because he wasn’t one; and he was a pedophile and should have gone to jail. Does it matter that she isn’t some cheap slut known around town? I don’t know the girl but from what I see, she is very simple–and she has stayed out of the publicity limelight whenever possible.

Thank you for correcting my “errors” and replacing them with proven grounded truth. The education has made me think more clearly–Paul’s death is a big to do about nothing; He is a convict who got away without punishment; when he began dating his girlfriend at age 16; Angelina Jolie’s beauty is a figment of my imagination as it is to millions of others around the world; I made a reference to a super-star but don’t seem able to find it; because he was NOT a super-star is why Debbie wrote her commentary (so if he were a super-star then the attention would be justified? I don’t get it); you are a narc which explains why you immediately identified Angelina Jolie as a druggie; you set me clear on the James Dean comparison; you are a nutritionist; somehow you recognize my name, however that is significant to the topic; and you did validate that Paul “WAS indeed a pretty good guy in some respects”. Wow you have a gift–very good.

I am indebted to you; next time would you mind also checking my spelling, vocabulary and punctuation?

At the end of the day, the passing of a person is tragic. I think we should all just let the person rest in peace without having to stir up all these arguments.

Kris on December 6, 2013 at 11:33 pm

I couldn’t agree more, but the James Dean comparison is a bit far-fetched. Dean was not only universally recognized as a film acting pioneer (his influence went as far as Egypt and Japan) who helped usher in more raw emotions and method acting techniques to the big screen, but died at 24 years of age and had already established himself, with East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause, and Giant, as one of the best young actors in Hollywood. He was, first and foremost, a serious artist who took his craft intensely serious. Paul Walker is a clown compared to James Dean.

Tyler on December 7, 2013 at 10:10 pm

Yes, and as was stated by myself and others when this same issue came up in previous posts, Debbie did NOT compare Paul Walker to James Dean as far as his acting ability was concerned. What Debbie clearly said in the headline, and article, was that there was a James Dean-ing of this young man. In other words, being built up to be the icon that he wasn’t.

A person that risks his life, and the lives of innocent bystanders, once – has probably done it multiple if not many times.
I can’t respect that, no matter how ‘good’ a person he may have been.
‘good’ people also drive drunk and kill others.
Am not against him, but he’s getting similar treatment as Nelson Mandela.
sorry no comparison.

rosswell on December 9, 2013 at 9:56 pm

There were no “innocent bystanders” – obviously you’re not familiar with where their accident occurred. Just a FYI ….

Mario on December 11, 2013 at 12:26 am

If someone on the street had been killed , say a mother pushing a baby stroller or a grandma or a crowd of people even, would you feel the same way? I mean we could all ask ourselves that.

This could have been a much larger tragedy.

I resent when a single individual’s penchant for taking risks intrudes on and endangers other people. Drag racing or not, the evidence of high speed seems quite clear.

Sorry for him but very glad no other lives than those two were taken.

rosswell on December 9, 2013 at 10:04 pm

The number of stupid comments people make is amazing, but I guess that’s not too surprising – those must be the same people who love to hear their own voices.

Mario on December 11, 2013 at 12:14 am

A quick FYI: it’s clear you aren’t familiar where the accident took place because if you did, you’d realize that your comments about a Mother pushing baby or Grandma walking Stuffy the dog, or a crowd of people lingering about are invalid and without merit. The street is within a light industrial/office complex – otherwise deserted, especially on a holiday weekend.

Mario on December 11, 2013 at 12:23 am

If they’d gone to a racetrack to do speed or car testing the outcome would’ve been different.

I will admit it is possible it was a car malfunction thus “no fault”.

It's not a racetrack. on December 11, 2013 at 1:00 am
