Detroit Bankruptcy Won’t Save City: Decades of Bankrupt Black Racist Leadership, Morals Undid Detroit, Won’t Be Fixed

By Debbie Schlussel

Since I am a fourth-generation Detroiter and live just four miles outside the city limits, many readers have asked for my reaction to yesterday’s bankruptcy filing by the City of Detroit. Longtime readers know that I’ve felt for most of my life that Detroit was already bankrupt–financially, morally, and otherwise. This just makes it official. Detroit’s mostly Black, mostly racist, mostly corrupt “leadership”–or lack thereof–led the city to this point, but it’s not politically correct to say this hard, unvarnished truth.

detroitdetroithouse

Detroit: Where the Weak Are Killed & Eaten

I was born in the City of Detroit, but I am the first in four generations of Detroiters who has never lived within the city limits (other than perhaps a couple months or so–if that–after I was born when my late father was doing his medical residency). I am the third generation of Detroiters who avoided the city like the plague and among three generations who were and remain afraid to go there because it’s a crime-ridden dump of a ghost town. The largest city in America ever to file bankruptcy should have filed long ago. This was a long time coming and very necessary to put Detroit on a path back to possible revitalization, though the odds are slim even with a successful emergence from bankruptcy.

A column I wrote on this site about Detroit’s race riots in the ’60s is now in a major textbook. And it’s not racist to point out that Detroit collapsed under the weight of decades of Black racist clowns running the city . . . into the ground. Charles Pugh, an openly gay fan of (anti-gay) Louis Farrakhan, was until recently the City Council President of Detroit. He apparently molested a teen he was mentoring and ran away from Detroit under cover of night. He was spotted in Seattle in hiding and was fired by Kevin Orr, the Emergency Financial Manager who is the only man in the last four decades with decency and common sense and the man who made the tough decision to file for bankruptcy. And he dragged Detroit kicking and screaming to that point. He’s from out of town and was appointed by the governor against the wishes of the majority of the mostly Black residents of Detroit.

While Detroit was sinking and burning, Pugh and a parade of other lunatics elected to “run” the city were focusing on different “priorities.” They accepted bribes and were deposed (see Monica Conyers, recently a resident of “Camp Cupcake” prison). They tried to name the Detroit half of the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel after Monica Conyers’ hubby, Marxist Congressman John Conyers, a fitting tribute because like the rest of Detroit and Conyers’ ideas, the tunnel is underwater. They enacted an “African Town” enterprise zone that would favor Blacks and Black-owned businesses because everyone knows that racism is the way to rebuild a city. They refused to allow the State of Michigan to take over Belle Isle and other Detroit parks and rescue them because they saw that as “Whitey” trying to take “our jewels”–jewels built by the White residents of ancient Detroit and driven to dumping grounds for dead bodies of murder victims, infested by drug dealers, criminals, and havens for late night gay sex and prostitution.

While Detroit was sinking and “achieved” its current estimated out-of-wedlock birth rate of near 90%, racist Detroit City Councilwoman JoAnn Watson–who begged for an Obama bailout of the City–was busy whining over and nixing a contract to pay a Black boxing instructor $10 per hour to teach Black Detroit boys how to box at a community center. Hey, he wasn’t “black enough” in her eyes because he didn’t live in the city. G-d forbid young Black boys who have no father figure or decent male role model in their lives should get one at $10 per hour.

Detroit is an infected swamp. It’s infected with crime, kids with no dads (and a bankruptcy will never fix that or erase that debt), people with no values, and a high tax rate on the few suburbanites left who still work there. The problem is that after emerging from bankruptcy, while Detroit will have a clean slate in its finances, it will continue to elect the same panoply of nut jobs, race merchants, criminals, and loons. That will happen over and over again. More Kwame Kilpatricks and Charles Pughs and JoAnn Watsons will return to “run” the city. That’s who Detroit votes for. And it’s an indictment of Black Detroit. Anybody who wants to create an atmosphere for jobs and businesses is viewed as an ally of “the suburbs” and an Uncle Tom (even though many of Detroit’s suburbs are now largely Black) and a racist swoops in to win the election.

The two Black men recently put in place to lead the city–men who are outstanding people and real mensches–were anomalies. Lame duck Mayor Dave Bing, who is basically a Republican in Democrat clothing, couldn’t do much. He’s not “street” enough and couldn’t make a move to fix things because of intractable city unions and an obstructionist City Council. Orr, as I noted, was not elected. He was put in place–appointed–by a White governor, Rick Snyder, who is viewed as the enemy. And, in turn, Orr, is viewed as an Uncle Tom, too. He is not in power because the City of Detroit wants him. But because it was forced on the city of Obamanation and abomination.

Bankruptcy is a good thing for the City. But Detroit will never come back until and unless it has an atmosphere of low taxes, weak (or no) unions, and a leadership whose agenda consists of something other than “Get The Crackaz!” As I noted, bankruptcy and the emergence therefrom will not erase generations and generations of young boys born to single mothers. It will not erase the hip-hop culture that holds the city and much of Black America (and, now, a growing portion of White America) hostage. It will not erase the bankruptcy of values and morals that dominates the city. Drugs and crime will continue in the city no matter how many more police are put on the street because of bankruptcy reorganization. The tax rate on those working and producing in Detroit will not go down via bankruptcy. It’s a legislative act of a City Council that will never change.

The real bankruptcy in Detroit began when White flight happened in the ’60s and ’70s–when my family and others ran away from the city as fast we they could because my grandparents and parents saw the handwriting on the wall, because they saw the riots in which people’s lives and livelihoods–particularly the lives and livelihoods of the civilized White people living in the city–were threatened. And until White people (other than hipsters living in fantasyland) feel safe enough to return to the city and live there–as they have in places like Cleveland, Washington, DC, etc.–Detroit will never recover, bankruptcy or not. We didn’t leave Detroit to get away from Black people (we moved into what was transforming into a largely Black neighborhood and suburb, where I still live today). We moved to get away from the destructive values that then began to grip much of urban (and largely Black) culture and now dominate it.

I have and have had many Black Detroiters as clients. I respect that many of them are very religious and G-d-fearing. But there’s a disconnect. I’ll have a client who tells me he or she goes to Church every Sunday and believes “the Lord” will take care of him or her. But this same person will tell me he or she has three or more kids with three or more different sex partners, none of whom they ever married. Did G-d and the preacher tell you to sleep around and raise kids who don’t have a father in their lives, don’t know how to act like a man, or–for girls–be treated by one? Did G-d tell you to teach your kids that it’s okay to live on welfare and listen to hip-hop glorifying drugs, murder, and otherwise despicable and anti-social behavior? That is the bankruptcy no one will ever fix because it starts at home. And the broken “homes” in Detroit–many of them–consist of womb donors who teach their kids that nutrition is Mountain Dew or red pop and education is learning how to get public entitlements and vote for Obama and other demagogues and corruptocrats like Kwame Kilpatrick (who would be re-elected today as Detroit Mayor if he were not in prison), no matter what they do.

You can trace this social decline in the City of Detroit in the history of just one house in the city, as I noted on this site a few years ago. A once-grand house in a once-fancy neighborhood in the city went from being owned by a U.S. Senator and prominent Ford execs in the early 1900s to a decrepit $7,000 house in foreclosure and involved in mortgage fraud by a Detroit cop in the early 2000s.

Contrary to popular belief, the death of Detroit is not about the death of the auto industry. It is about the racism of Black America. And the decline of Black morals and civilization in America’s once-most-glorious industrial city. It’s about a culture that is failing. And, make no mistake, White America now resembles this breakdown in Black America (on every level) more and more each day.

Those things will probably never recover. And Kevin Orr and Detroit’s bankruptcy can’t fix them.

Until Detroit’s largely Black population regains its moral and social footing–its values–there will be no rebirth for the City of Detroit.

It is the madness that is seen in Sanford, Florida and California. The left offers nothing but survival to its rank and file followers, if that.

Although I agree that Black racism, entitlement, selfishness and incompetence led to this, the role of the UAW should not be minimized. In the early days of Detroit’s decline, the UAW was involved. Coleman Young had a UAW (and Communist Party) background, and the UAW’s contract provisions discouraged auto makers and associated industries from maintaining or establishing a significant presence in Detroit. And of course, General Motors, the only major auto company still in Detroit is controlled by the Government and the Union. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be in Detroit.

Bulls-eye! Right on target post from beginning to end.

In a better world the local (what passes for news media) TV stations would be beating a path to your door, Debbie, in a race to be the outlet to have you give an on air reading of this post. That prospect is as huge a fantasy as the Democrat fantasy idealism that delivered Detroit to where it’s at.

So on it goes; truth goes begging for a widely distributed hearing.

JDAM ! Detroit is doomed and our tax $$$ will soon be going into the pockets of yet another round bailouts to “save” or “revitalise” ( hmm, weren’t the casinos supposed to do that… ?) Detroit. It’s not a 3rd world city, it’s Bartertown and 8 Mile is the DMZ.

templarwd on July 19, 2013 at 2:51 pm

Detroit can be save by renaming it Starnsville and making it part of an Atlas Shrugged theme park.

Seriously, don’t discount the impact of the bankruptcy, money will be a lot harder to come by and with less money there is less corruption.

If really want to think outside the box, though, regarding scary situations, imagine Saudi Arabia offering bailout bucks with strings attached with the intent to bring forth Islamic institutions.

I think you put bluntly what many of us believe. I’m a native of Southwest Detroit as were both my parents. It was a good, relatively safe place when I was born & up until the early 80s. By the time I married (another Detroiter), I couldn’t get out fast enough. Since then, every member of both of our families has fled. We didn’t leave because of black people (what people think white flight means). We left because of the crime, the drugs, the schools, the corruption, the taxes, the way people stopped caring about the homes & those who felt like they could destroy those who tried. It goes on & on.
I’ve noticed the disconnect & pointed it out to others as well. How can you be a “Gd fearing person on Sunday & ignore everything He says the rest of the week”? Crickets…You can’t claim to live by a code if you don’t, you know, live by the code! Pointing that out only shows more cognitive dissonance, it makes no sense.
Since leaving Detroit, I’ve lived in more than one city in more than one country & in some ways, it’s unique. Some other American cities are on the downhill slide toward being Detroit & it will not change until more people are as honest as you & more people are willing to hear the honesty rather than trying to kill the messanger

Video is pretty shocking,
“do it baby!”, If you can’t play the race card and you’re losing argument then play the sexist card?
The first one to do that loses in my book. She’s the one turning the meeting into a domestic dispute anyway.

Don’t know much about Detroit except what I saw in “Detropia” but I do know a haunted zombie castle when I see one.

So sail all leftist flag ships.

I don’t know your clients Debbie so maybe I shouldn’t say but it’s got to be tough being a parent in Detroit these days.

I’m a product of the St. Louis area, and believe me, everything that Debbie says here about Detroit blacks could be said about St. Louis blacks. A more corrupt, thieving, destructive, murderous bunch of people you’ve never met. I’ve experienced a lot of it first-hand.

The City of St. Louis actually has done a good job attracting new construction and business/residential development, especially aided by state tax abatements. But in the end, blacks terrorize and chase away law-abiding people; that’s why the downtown Galleria isn’t doing too well lately. City blacks also frequently board trains (the Metrolink system opened up 20 years ago) to travel to the suburbs and commit crimes.

Talk to any white from metro St. Louis if you think I’m making this up.

Bravo Debbie.

What’s sad is that I was born in Hartford, Conn and you could be talking about my former hometown. Today almost no one in my extended family even lives in the state of Connecticut let alone Hartford.

The problem isn’t racial as much as the fact that the “takers” take over. They are a bunch of uneducated ignorant thugs who think that the World owes them a living and won’t work. This includes white trash which are the worst of the bunch. They then elect a bunch of corrupt politicians who pander to the scum and promise them a lot of goodies. These slimy politicians then jack up taxes sky high to feather they and their pals’ nests and to pay for the goodies for the slime.
Businesses and hard working people start to flee which leads to taxes being raised even higher–so more flee. Meanwhile besides the deadbeats, the major supporters of these politicians are the public unions who grease the politicians who then after the election agree to outrageous salary and pension demands.

And there we are today. A city that has most of its money going to union people who barely “worked” for the city for 20 – 30 years and then get a pension and free health care for life for 30 – 40 years with many of them double dipping.

Of course this is not sustainable and Detroit is the 1st city of many that will be filing BK in the next few years. California is not too far down the BK road as well.

Great article Debbie–you are so right !!

Detroit’s current residents are who destroyed the city, and who will prevent the city from ever recovering. Who in their right mind would ever build a factory or high tech facility there and expect to hire the savages that live there? Those animals won’t even allow a grocery or department store there. Detroit is also a boat anchor around Michigan’s neck, which will continue to drag it down until the people grow enough balls to cut it loose. This schmuck we have for a governor doesn’t have the balls to try, that’s for sure. He thinks breaking the public employee unions is all he needs to do. That is like trying to cure cancer with a band aid.

RT on July 19, 2013 at 8:33 pm

I encourage you to read this article:

    http://www.nhi.org/online/issues/79/isurred.html

Also, read this book: “The Origins of the Urban Crisis: Race and Inequality in Post-War Detroit”

This will help you see that the people in Detroit today, “savages” you call them, are not responsible for what happened to Detroit. Years of white racist policy towards blacks in the housing market – both publicly (governmentally) and privately sanctioned, in the job market, and through education policy led to the collapse you see today. In essence, white-fueled racism against blacks created ticking time bomb and it was only a matter of time before it went off. You’ll see if you read that book. It was written by a University of Pennsylvania History prof who was originally from Detroit and whose family was part of the “white flight” from the area. Reading the book really enriched my perspective and understanding about what has happened to Detroit – an important understanding for all Americans. The interesting thing about the author too, is that he doesn’t take the common racist stance of “it’s the black people’s fault.”

Detroit encapsulates the main issues plaguing us to the very day – inequalities among race/class lines (although primarily racial lines) and the deindustrialization/anti-unionization of our country over the past 50-60yrs. A true understanding of Detroit shows us where we were and where we are going. A true understanding shows us that as great as we think it was back then, there were many cracks and fissures which stemmed from our societal ignorance in the area of race. For years, white policy kept blacks cornered in ghetto neighborhoods with little stable employment. Many blacks (and whites) came to Det from the south for the promise of employment, and blacks found that they there was the possibility for better paying employment and a better life than in the south. But there were still many roadblocks to their upward mobility, and many of those roadblocks are still there today. It is easy for us as white people to look and blame, we don’t understand what it’s like to not have privileges. WE take it for granted. Our society gives it to us the moment we are born because we look a certain way and are born into a certain area/class status. We need to have compassion, put ourselves in other people’s shoes with EMPATHY, and ask the question, “how can I help to make this better,” “How can we work together understand and take steps to a better day?” That is what is going to get us out of this mess. We are all in it together. As MLK said, “Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness.”

and also, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter.”

Let’s not forget that we have the ability to accomplish many great things together as human beings. We have to inspire each other and move forward together!

    Anyway, I hope this helps.

alison on September 15, 2013 at 1:23 am

I have already seen a few video news clips somhow blaming GM,Ford, and Chrysler and of course white flight as the REAL reasons for Detroit’s bankruptcy. These video clips insinuate that if white people had just stayed and continue getting robbed by the criminal in the street and in public office, the tax revenue would have not dried up. The car companies get dumped on for making lousy crappy cars where the Europeans and definately the Japanese moved in to bring quality cars for the wealthy and cheap economical cars for the less wealthy.

I feel that the media is just trying to continue the race baiting by now blaming white people for leaving since the media assumes they are racists for not wanting to live next to them. Funny how a lot of these media top earners live in exclusive neighborhoods with probably armed security and/or quick 911 response through alarm companies. However they would be the first to cry foul if the city governemnt would setup low income housing in their neighborhoods especially using the often misused “lowering property values” arguement.

I have counseled numerous young black males who have confessed to me that what drove them from the Church was the ministers having sex with their church going mothers. There is often a disconnect between what the preacher says and does in all racial demographics, but the frequency of this revelation by so many young men to me makes me think its part of the problem. Many black churches are also the hub of training to receive various forms of government help. Once I attended a major black church in LA. I was stunned that most of the rooms during Sunday School were devoted to various strategies to get on assistence programs, and others to racial empowerment strategies. The empowerment of the gospel and conviction of the Holy Spirit was evident in the music, but otherwise sadly lacking.

Great article, Debbie. I was in Davison, Michigan about 15 years ago and asked the hotel clerk about Detroit. She said that you don’t drive into Detroit unless you have VERY SPECIFIC directions to your destination. Needless to say, we didn’t drive into Detroit. It’s very sad. I blame this on the liberal welfare system. They replaced fathers with government checks, and the rest is history.

Very good article. Never been to Detroit myself. I don’t doubt what you wrote. New Orleans, also is in much of the same shape. they do have jazz tradition though. It’s a matter of time for them. I can’t say that I blame you for not living there, Miss Debbie. It was like I heard say on the radio, “…if obama had a city, it would look like Detroit,…”.

William on July 20, 2013 at 12:58 pm

Debbie, we’re of similar age and I agree with you totally about the spread of destructive values to white youth. Only three decades ago the hip hop culture, single parenthood, and welfare dependency were largely confined to the urban black neighborhoods. I fled St. Louis City to get away from it. I came to western Oregon in the late 1970’s and am dismayed to see that the same destructive culture that that I fled is taking root in the white community. The goal of many young white girls is to drop out of school, get pregnant, and then get on welfare. Guaranteed Section 8 housing, WIC cards, Food Stamps, medical, and subsidized everything else. Just find a sperm donor to reap the goodies. The goal of many white boys is to drop out of school, have casual sex, avoid work at all costs, smoke dope all day, and when not stoned play video games on an iPad or SmartPhone. The government colossus of assistance is destroying the work ethic of everyone it touches. Being “cool” in America is more important than being responsible.

Yours is a very good description of America in decline. Very sad but true. Militarily the USA may be still a superpower, less so financially. Morally it is drowning.

Liberalism is a mental illness. I live outside Philadelphia in a county that once was solid Republican but is now being taken over by Democrats (who are already getting rid of long term people in the county government to put in their Democrat stooges). We’ve had a big influx of people escaping primarily Philadelphia because of the poor schools, crime and taxes. Philly’s been run (into the ground) by Democrats for 60 years. And what do they do? They vote Democrat. It’s like they’re the zombies in World War Z. They want to spread the plague. Eventually, this county – the richest in Pennsylvania and one of the richest in the country – will be totally controlled by liberals/Democrats and run into the ground.

This is why any bankruptcy of Detroit will do nothing. It will still be controlled by mentally ill liberals (I know I’m being redundant).

Concerned Citizen on July 20, 2013 at 1:40 pm

Debbie you are correct in your assessment of the causes and consequences of Detroit’s decline. You are correct that Detroit will not turn around until there is a change in Black morals and culture – which may take decades, if ever. So for us the moving van arrives on Wednesday. We will leave the suburbs for the west. We do this, in part, due to the fact that Detroit will have to come after suburban money to solve their financial problems. This financial problem is a cancer on all of us- it will spread unchecked until the host is dead financially. So we will take our tax dollars to a safer environment. This is on the heals of 2 of our 3 children having left the state. So for us it represents 9 people with jobs and tax base going elsewhere. Good luck -don’t wait too long to get out.

LiveFree on July 20, 2013 at 2:37 pm

I think we’re all just being racists here, blaming Detroit’s decline on the morals of black people. I think the heart of Detroit’s woes are the fault of Canadian drug cartels, just like U.S./Mexico border cities’ are the result of Mexican drug lords and their cartels. On the Mexican border we blame Mexicans, whereas on the northern border we blame the black victims instead of the white drugs lords in Canada. I rest my case, we’re all a bunch of racists.

CornCoLeo on July 21, 2013 at 9:09 am

Even as a teenager back in the seventies I used to speak out against the promotion of welfare in the black community because it just encouraged bad behavior from our women to keep having unplanned pregnancies just for more government money, bringing the government into your household telling you how to live. People would say I was crazy, but this is the logical result of government intervention into peoples lives filling their heads with racial propaganda. I fear with the current WH occupant the entire nation is headed in this direction so stay tuned.

The hard part for me is the notion that these imbeciles believe what they say, but then again they don’t come across as smart enough to know the difference.

SOME QUESTIONS & ONE LINERS.

Whatever happened to CIVIL SERVICE instead of UNIONS for Municipal Workers?

My Dad & I argued: Dad said Detroit could be saved – I said Bulldoze 75% of it so it could be saved.

I believed Detroit Treasurer’s: They said Back Taxes / Liens would be waived; Surprise! Cost us $7,500 to keep the property.

Our Renter, Black retired GM skilled worker, saw some young Black kids on the side of their newly renovated rented house and they were hurling rocks against the new siding. He looked at me and said, there are Black people and there are n*****s – those are n*****s in that house.

What does one say to the family of Mom’s 80 year old Church-worker friend who was RAPED on her way to Church??? Or, to a bare-breasted woman who is on your front porch screaming for help? OR, TO A BLACK NEIGHBOR WHO CALLS YOU AT 2:00 AM because her drugged-up son is beating on her door asking for money?

As an infamous T-Shirt once proclaimed: DETROIT WHERE THE WEAK ARE KILLED AND EATEN.

Liberal policies have caused horrific damage to Detroit starting back about 50 years. What makes this so tragic is that Detroit was once a great, fantastic city in every respect. From about 1920 and on into the 1950s Detroit was the wealthiest city in the world. It had the highest per capita income, the highest percentage of home ownership, the highest per capita value of real estate, fabulous parks, museums, wonderful schools, fine public buildings and homes, a great theater district, was an industrial powerhouse and more. By the mid 1950s its population had grown to 1.86 million and it had the largest department store in the world (Hudsons). In the 1950s Detroit’s schools were the finest in the country. Liberal policies caused people to leave starting in the early ‘60s and have continued, until today it is below 700,000. The people who left were those who were financially able to do so with the result that although Detroit lost more than half its population it lost 85% of its wealth. The school system, which was once considered one of the best, is now the worst in the country, crime is among the worst and much of the city looks like a bombed out war zone. All due to Democrats and their liberal left wing policies.

Yeah Im going to gripe about this article when the focal point is “Its the Darkies fault that Detroit is a craphole city.” Um I don’t live there, but I believe it was the auto industry that destroyed detroit, by taking jobs elsewhere. Wah Wah Wah, its the Darkies fault. Knock it off, What is it the whiteys fault, because “they” damn near destroyed America, with their wall street greed, huh huh, give it a rest.

btw the Black corrupt politicians had great teachers. hmm

Listen you harpy, you need to watch what you type when addressing me, address me with some decorum, Skunky. Enough of your vile puke spewing from those fingers, to think someone who can write so well uses it to spew foolish rantings that show nothing but rudimentary thinking skills. Sad.

You are better than that. Oh btw, Gerald has handed your ass to you several times. Your vitriol doesn’t make you sound smart trust me. Huh? What? Zimbabwe? Damn ask someone where theyre going they want to tell you where theyve been. Skunky at least try to make sense, follow the thread and stop with the tangents.

It’s up to you. You gotta long way to go.

Skunky on July 22, 2013 at 8:32 pm

Hahaha nice one Slinky, seems the white man is always Tue fault of all the problems. I see these people stretch and bend their silly ass arguementative to blame the white man for every flaw in the world. Seems no one is to blame unless your white to these race hustlers who have fooled enough of their constituents to believe this crap.

I am sorry I meant Skunky. Not trying to say say Apple is better than Android but this HTC One web browser sucks and have play peek-a-boo with lowereing the virtual keypad to see what is being typed on the comment box will cause some errors.

Blaming blacks for the plight of Detroit? Now thats rich! You mean to tell me that Whites in Detroit or in other city don’t share some responsibility? Yeah, always blame it on the black man, why? Because we whites don’t have to critcally think about why; its just easy. How about capitalism? Creative destruction?
What about the 3 car makers and their poor management decisions over a long period of time? What about globalism? Naw, that’s too difficult of a position. If you’re from Detroit, lived in Detriot……its your fault….now deal with it!

clark Washington on July 23, 2013 at 12:37 pm

Who has been in power in government in Detroit? Sure the foolish liberal Whites had their part but overall the power brokers in Detroit have been black. Seems your quick to blame everyone but the city government because had Detroit been managed better, there would have been more companies to come to Detroit. Yes the big three contributed but overall it the policies of the government that exacerbated the problem by kicking the can further down until the can went over the cliff.

Mario on July 23, 2013 at 3:00 pm

I am not American. I even haven’t been to the USA but maybe it would be easier to speak out loud what many US residents may only think of. To me the conclusion from this (very good) article is plain and clear. The blacks (is this word not prohibited yet in your country?) as a society have not grown up to run a city or a country. If statistics is a respected science, that conclusion comes to my mind. All people deserve respect but different races have (statistically) different levels of IQ and social inteligence. If you disagree, please read “The Bell curve” or name a couple of black science Nobel prize winners (excluding peace and literature, which have too much to do with politics, not science)…

donni James on August 7, 2013 at 4:40 am

You can’t criticize blacks without them crying racism. You can’t tell them anything. You can’t say black people are being destroyed by out of wedlock childbirth, thug culture, or any other nonsense that is detrimental to them becoming self sufficient Americans. They will only cry foul or point out that every other ethnic group has its bad seeds. They never address key issues that continue to afflict their communities. They continue to regurgitate the same nonsense generation after generation

Does anyone think Detroit will ever recover? I currently live in Australia and cant believe the government would allow Detroit to become like a third world country – if not worse!!!

Australia would never allow for that to happen; it would destroy the economy. I’m shocked at how cheap a house is – 15 grand? I’m wondering if it’s worth buying 3 or 4 and holding onto to them for a long time – 10 or 20 years doesn’t worry me as I’m only 25 and can afford it.

Jasmine on September 3, 2013 at 5:59 am

I have to say that your article is incredibly misogynistic and racist. But it’s not your fault. It’s years of societal influence that have led you to your positions – the positions largely shared by most metro Detroit people. I, too, am from metro Detroit and also have family that left in the 80’s due to violence and their neighborhood going down the tubes. However, I really encourage you read “The Origins of Urban Crisis: Race and Inequality in Post-War Detroit.” It’s written by a white man, and I’m saying that because that fact seems to matter to you. He is a scholar and also originally from Detroit. His family left too. He is now an esteemed professor at U of Pennsylvania. Look there for the actual historical facts about what led to the breakdown of the city. Everyone wants to blame the African-Americans.. i see it everywhere, but it isn’t accurate or fair. Blaming them is like yelling at someone for falling after having the rug pulled out from under them. The truth is the African Americans were never allowed to truly develop a foundation of power and ownership in the city while it was thriving. Many depended on the white-owned industries for employment (and even then, it wasn’t good employment like the white people got easliy). As the nation started moving industry overseas (to exploit cheap labor), the first people to lose their jobs were, more often than not, black people – they were less valued. One statistic in the book shows that young black men (in their early 20s) in 1960 Detroit were the most unemployed bracket at over %10 unemployment. Their white counterparts had a rate of around only %2 unemployment. To boot, blacks were totally discriminated against, not only socially, but institutionally and through government policy – which restricted them to live in certain areas and made it nearly impossible for them to get FHA (let alone private)-backed mortgages or money for housing improvements. Anytime a black person lived in an area, the real estate score for that area would drop, it would be dropped officially by city appraisers. So, in a way, no wonder whites wanted to move (or attack/revolt) when a black family moved into their neighborhood. But, can’t we see that all of this stems from racism?? African American families were trying to move-up in the world, just like anyone else. I mean, the Civil Rights Movement came to life because these people were tired of being treated like second class citizens. They deserved the same rights, privileges, and dignity as anyone else. However, through social racism and institutional/governmental racism, they didn’t have a fighting chance. The time bomb that was Detroit after WWII was not created by the blacks, even though everyone still wants to blame them for it all. We really need to open our eyes and hearts and realize what really happened in the past. It’s too easy to think of everyone down there as immoral and thugs… these people are actually good people, but what would happen to you if there was no hope. NO jobs, broken down neighborhoods, an inferior educational system and seemingly no future. Put yourself in their shoes for once, without your privilege, without your whiteness. What has happened to Detroit is a crying shame. But I do have hope, and it begins in our hearts. With compassion and commitment to figuring this out and working TOGETHER for the common good and to be careful and cognizant of our past mistakes.

The link above is to an article which explains redlining in the housing market – a huge reason why black Detroiters and many other blacks were kept from moving toward a better life. It continues today! We need to REinvest in our inner cities. We need to REincorporate or REALLY incorporate blacks into the economy. They need the ability to own, live, and work freely just like any of the rest of us. This is America. Can we please start living up to our standards of freedom and prosperity for all? The government of this country could set the foundation for solving so many of our problems – through regulation, fair taxes, investment, restoration, and actually putting our tax dollars back to work in Smart ways here at home instead of filling the pockets of military contractors and wasting resources spying on their own citizens. Can we please unite over that sentiment? We are all here and we all want the same thing. We want to live a good life, feel hope in our future, do something meaningful while we are alive, etc. We want to feel safe, healthy, and be free of fear. We all want it, but all of us are dealing with different life circumstances and we see things from our perspective. Some people have been so shit on for generations, particularly African Americans, that who can blame them if they are jaded and pissed off to the core about it?? I can’t. Being mad at them and blaming them for everything is just a continuation of the same diluted thinking that was behind racism, Jim Crow laws, and all of the institutionalized racist policy that followed. We have to come together, or else this nonsense will continue forever. We have to realize that, in the great words of FDR, we have nothing to fear but fear itself.

It’s the same old story. You can alway count on crime and destruction of property wherever there is a high concentration of blacks. That’s not racist, look around, that’s just a fact

the black race destroyed the city of Detroit is the reality

Detroit’s problems solely lie with too great a dependence on automobile manufacturing. Many cities around the country relied heavily on manufacturing and mills, yet when those industries died quickly, it forced those cities to change course early. Not so with Detroit. Detroit is still heavily in bed with the UAW and The Big Three, even though globalization makes it impossible for automobile companies to support local manufacturing. As corrupt a mayor as Coleman Young was, name me a past mayor or mayoral candidate who would have had the guts to heavily invest in Biomedical engineering or software engineering fields in the 60-70s? The UAW and automotive companies would have had chewed them up and spit them out.

All the suburban vs. urban chatter is ridiculously parochial. Race issues and crime are not insurmountable. They exist is other cities, sometimes even worse, like Chicago, yet those cities thrive or are on the upswing. Those living in nice Detroit suburbs like Birmingham, W. Bloomfield Hills, Rochester, Grosse Pointe, etc. need to realize no one outside the tri-state area can name any suburbs of Detroit, they just know Detroit, and that its a dump, and therefore Birmingham residents, from their perspective, live just outside a dump. Bragging about a suburb of Detroit is like bragging about how nice your town is just outside of Sadr City, Iraq. When the vast population of people outside Detroit start to think of themselves as Detroiters again, things might start to change. Sorry for the rant, I am a Detroiter, born and raised, but I live in New England now, and I view the Detroit situation much differently now that I am no longer in the thick of it.
