Muslims, Arabs, Lefties Upset That Paul Ryan Influenced by Pro-Israel Ayn Rand

By Debbie Schlussel

I’ve read several Arab media attacks on Paul Ryan because he’s said his biggest influence was libertarian author Ayn Rand and her book, “Atlas Shrugged.” Their ire is not because of Rand (nee Rosenbaum’s) unflinching support for free market capitalism. It’s that Ayn Rand was proudly pro-Israel, even though she eschewed Judaism and her birth into a Jewish family. Echoing their rage about this is the crowd of self-hating, anti-Israel JINOs (Jews In Name Only) at organizations such as J Street and MondoWeiss. Check this out from MondoWeiss’ Philip Weiss, a guy who–if this was 1941 Auschwitz–would be wearing the badge, “Uber Kapo” and happily pushing us into the ovens even without the lure of an extra cup of potato gruel. And, as you read those, know that Paul Ryan probably has no idea Ayn Rand ever said any of these things (but I hope he finds out and agrees with her).

Oh and here’s something about Ryan’s intellectual idol, Ayn Rand. She said Arabs were savages and culturally undeveloped.

Ayn Rand on Israel (Ford Hall Forum lecture, 1974)

Q: What should the United Sates do about the [1973] Arab-Israeli War?

AR: Give all the help possible to Israel. Consider what is at stake. It is not the moral duty of any country to send men to die helping another country. The help Israel needs is technology and military weapons—and they need them desperately. Why should we help Israel? Israel is fighting not just the Arabs but Soviet Russia, who is sending the Arabs armaments. Russia is after control of the Mediterranean and oil. Further, why are the Arabs against Israel? (This is the main reason I support Israel.)

The Arabs are one of the least developed cultures. They are typically nomads. Their culture is primitive, and they resent Israel because it’s the sole beachhead of modern science and civilization on their continent. When you have civilized men fighting savages, you support the civilized men, no matter who they are. Israel is a mixed economy inclined toward socialism. But when it comes to the power of the mind—the development of industry in that wasted desert continent—versus savages who don’t want to use their minds, then if one cares about the future of civilization, don’t wait for the government to do something. Give whatever you can. This is the first time I’ve contributed to a public cause: helping Israel in an emergency.

Another Ryan hater, anti-Israel atheist Lebanese Muslim As’ad AbuKhalil a/k/a “Angry Arab,” claims that Rand said, during a 1980 appearance on Phil Donahue’s syndicated television talk show that Jews are civilized and Arabs are savages.

Uh-huh, and 9/11 and homicide bombings at Israeli pizza shops, hotels, and bars, and beheadings of sleeping babies on the Jewish Sabbath, etc. prove otherwise, don’t they?

I don’t understand the problem.

“Jews are civilized and Arabs are savages.”

How is this NOT TRUE? I like it myself.

This Ryan has my attention…

“Another Ryan hater, anti-Israel atheist Lebanese Muslim As’ad AbuKhalil a/k/a “Angry Arab,” claims that Rand said, during a 1980 appearance on Phil Donahue’s syndicated television talk show that Jews are civilized and Arabs are savages.”

Shame on Ayn Rand for insulting savages.

I_AM_ME on August 22, 2012 at 3:56 pm

I don’t need to spend a great deal of time on this…

If an Arab “likes” something, HATE IT.

If an Arab “dislikes” something, LIKE IT.

That way, there is no need to clutter your mind with the details of their current OFFENSE. The Arab world spins from one offense to another and it always offended about something.

“Oh and here’s something about Ryan’s intellectual idol, Ayn Rand. She said Arabs were savages and culturally undeveloped.”

300 years ago they were savages, 30 years ago they were savages and today are still savages. That is proven every day with honor killings, beheadings, rape, etc.

I don’t know much about Ayn Rand but for her interest in Capitalism (which I like) so this was very interesting. I really liked what she said about Arabs and Israel. She pithily bottom-lines it. I haven’t read her books…yet.

I know that some good, Christian Conservatives are annoyed with his interest in Ayn Rand (like Gregg Jackson and Alan Keyes) because they are serious about their religion and don’t like that she was an atheist. I at least assume that is so and understand that from their personal point of view. Personally, I am not a hard-liner in that matter. I don’t know much about her to form a strong opinion.

But I sure like her pithy take on Israel and Arabs! 😀

Skunky on August 22, 2012 at 4:01 pm

Skunky, if you want to know more about Ayn Rand, the best way is to read what she wrote.

Ayn Rand poured what she believed in into her fictional works. The least daunting works, which are early ones, would be We the Living and Anthem. The first work takes place in the Soviet Union, and is as close to autobiography that Ayn Rand gets. The second work could be viewed as a 1984 before there was a 1984 by Eric Blair/George Orwell. In some respects, it is even more disheartening. 🙂

I would personally hold off on her more substantial works until you have Ayn Rand’s shorter early works. After that, feel free to plunge into architecture with The Fountainhead. If you survive that page laden thing, dive into Atlas Shrugged, which tells a tale of railroads, the loathsome state, and of course John Galt. Atlas Shrugged, even though it is a novel, serves as a tract of her mature thought.

    Worry01 on August 23, 2012 at 6:18 pm

Ayn Rand – a Jew who abandoned her heritage and embraced Atheism, but supported Israel – is a lot preferable to the JINOs who proclaim their Jewishness (to highlight their differences w/ Christians) – but oppose Israel.

Only thing Ayn Rand missed in her analysis – the ‘Islam’ factor. While practically all Arabs may be Muslim, that doesn’t imply that non-Arab Muslims – from Turkey, Pakistan, Iran, North Africa, Afghanistan, Malaysia, Indonesia et al are not savages.

Infidel on August 22, 2012 at 4:07 pm

    Islam retards civilization.

On the other thread, I told you how knowledge is dangerous to Islam. When Ali Sina began studying Islam seriously, he became repelled by it and eventually left it altogether.

Islamic societies are morally and culturally backward because enlightenment is a dangerous thing and the mullahs/Islamic clerics know it. The spiritually educated Muslim is a contradiction in terms.

You can’t have people start asking questions. You know as well as I do, the day that ever happens Islam the way it is would be finished.

Steve Gardality on August 23, 2012 at 3:02 pm

My late father (Jewish) was born and grew up in the Levant. He had no problem recognizing the savagery that exists under the surface in Arab culture. I remember decades ago watching with him a story on TV of a funeral in Syria for some terrorist Israel had killed. It was a mob of thousands, with the requisite old women wailing for vengeance, death to Jews, etc. He could only shake his head and throw out a few choice epithets about such a people.

Raymond in DC on August 22, 2012 at 4:19 pm

I don’t care much for Ayn Rand’s extreme libertarianism but she’s spot in her support for Israel.

As Debbie would note, libertarians following her are today pro-Arab and pan-Muslim. They don’t take America’s security seriously enough.

And if Paul Ryan’s fault is that he’s pro-Israel, more honor to him. Let the Jew-hating Arabs, JINOs, Lefties and libertarians rage all they want!

NormanF on August 22, 2012 at 4:21 pm

So, Ayn Rand speaks the truth about Arabs, Muslims and Israel. That’s good. But, is there any truth to the allegations that Ayn Rand supports a philosophy of pure selfishness? I get the impression that she supports the total Lazais Faire system of “free market” economics, which in it’s purest form would mean absolutely NO regulation of business or economic activity by the government. This would put her far to the right of Romney and Ryan if it is true. Is that what we want? I tried reading Rand’s book, Atlas shrugged, years ago but got bogged down in it and didn’t finish it.

RT on August 22, 2012 at 4:22 pm

    RT,

William Buckley, me and most mainstream conservatives are not comfortable with that kind of philosophy. Human nature needs checks and balances.

Individuals, businesses and society need some regulation up to a reasonable point. A laissez faire society has never existed in the real world and I think Rand lost sight of it.

The libertarian dream is politically unattainable – the party has never done well in US federal and state elections.

I’m more for the Golden Mean in life and that suits most people in this country

NormanF on August 22, 2012 at 4:33 pm

    RT,

The only business regulation the government should be involved with protection against fraud and pollution, and unfortunately because of the terrible Jim Crow system, regulation against discrimination as well.Regulation beyond that is rent-seeking,which NEITHER Romney nor Obama will do anything about.

The free market(which means free from force or fraud)works wonders if the gov’t keeps the hell out of it.

A disgusting example of rent-seeking is the gov’t imposed taxi medallion system that creates taxi monopolies/cartels.

Scott on August 22, 2012 at 11:04 pm

Had there been no Muslims, Libertarianism would probably be fine. That philosophy pretty much maximizes the freedoms that every individual has, including the rights of people to enter and leave any country as they please.

Biggest problem w/ that is that it allows Muslims to take advantage of it and Islamize large sections of Western societies where they were previously non-existant. And once they have that majority, or power, they can use that to destroy the very Libertarianism that enabled them to get there.

Personally, even though I’m not an Atheist, the Libertarian philosophy appeals the most to me. For all their claims on values, Conservatives, w/ all their scandals – both political and personal – stand discredited, and Liberals were always quasi-Socialists to begin w/. I prefer the Libertarian approach – minimize government intrusion into the lives of citizens.

I however, don’t currently endorse it b’cos Muslims are perfectly capable of taking advantage of it and subverting a country using that as a vehicle, and then destroying it once it has served its purpose. But in their absense, I think it would be just fine.

Infidel on August 22, 2012 at 5:17 pm

Human behavior needs to be policed. Otherwise we’re living in a “Lord Of The Flies” world.

Islam is like the flip side of libertarianism, you can drink, gamble, sleep around, rape, steal and murder to your heart’s content as long as you’re helping Islam.

Sina wrote the very worst Muslims he met were who were the most religious. They were complete frauds and hypocrites. Thus, it comes as no surprise the foremost proponents of a laissez faire society are the Islamists.

If you think they live by any rules themselves, I have the Al Azar University in Cairo to sell to you. As you pointed out yourself, Muslims cotton to libertarianism because its what they do themselves when no one is looking at them.

NormanF on August 22, 2012 at 6:00 pm

      Norman,

You don’t know what you’re talking about.Islamists HATE personal liberty with a passion.

Scott on August 22, 2012 at 11:06 pm

        Really?

Then how the 9/11 Islamic terrorists patronized a strip club and Nidal Malik Hasan bought beer and stuffed dollar bills into a silcone enhanced skank’s clothes?

When it comes to personal freedoms, pious Muslims are world champs.

They simply don’t want you and I to have them.

NormanF on August 22, 2012 at 11:19 pm

          Norman,

Don’t confuse hypocracy for belief in liberty.

The fact that the 9/11 murderers engaged in behavior that they fanatically preached against doesn’t make them supporters of liberty,it makes them hypocrites.

Scott on August 22, 2012 at 11:28 pm

Compare Rand’s comments with those of the other prime libertarian, Murray Rothbard. Professor Rothbard never wasted an opportunity to denounce Israel and “the Jewish lobby.” His disciples, which include presidential candidate Ron Paul, talk and write like they’re cut from the same cloth.

Seek on August 22, 2012 at 5:20 pm

In this case, I stand with the late Ayn Rand’s. Islam is the epitome of backwardness socially and economically. Any society that challenges the static and retrograde notions of Islam is viewed as an existential threat that must be destroyed at the first opportunity. Islam may conceal its true intentions for a time, but the very crudeness of the religion means that its mask frequently slips off revealing the true ogre beneath.

NormanF on August 22, 2012 at 6:24 pm

Norman and Scott, it’s not hypocrisy. They were doing it as a cover, taqqiya at it’s best. That’s the real meaning of taqqiya, to pretend to LIVE as an infidel so as to overcome them from within. It’s not simply stating a falsehood although that may be part of it.

Italkit on August 23, 2012 at 2:29 am

Understand this is not a defense. It’s very easy to tut tut about hypocrisy and what awful sinners they are but please understand the depth of the evil they are doing. We all do hypocritical things from time to time. If this were just hypocrisy, I don’t think they’d be capable of doing the things they did. The ability to overcome moral revulsion in the cause of belief comes from a much deeper well of moral certitude and that is what the world is dealing with. Calling it mere hypocrisy trivializes it.

Italkit on August 23, 2012 at 2:37 am

She was also a strong anti-Communist, aiding in helping to identify Communists and remove them from Hollywood.

These days, when that philosophy is making a resurgence, in the form of OWS, and the overtones of the Democratic Party, perhaps Ryan will also learn about that aspect of Ayn Rand’s life.

Little Al on August 22, 2012 at 6:15 pm

It is amazing how little it takes to get Muslims shrieking in horror. Don’t they know that Romney will be “business as usual” if elected?

Have they forgotten Barak O’Bama’s famous pledge? “Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel and it must remain undivided.” Less than three months after taking office, Muslims didn’t have to worry about that anymore.

Dear Muslims: Please don’t panic over anything Paul Ryan or Mitt Romney say on the campaign trail. Campaign promises are not binding contracts. If elected, you’ll find that they’ll be your friend just like Barack O’Bama and Joe Biden.

Sincerely,

Excellent post. As a Libertarian I believe in freedom of religion, which includes the right not to believe. Some of my favorite Ayn Rand quotes:

“Government ‘help’ to business is just as disastrous as government persecution… the only way a government can be of service to national prosperity is by keeping its hands off.”

“The smallest minority on earth is the individual. Those who deny individual rights cannot claim to be defenders of minorities.”

“We are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission; which is the stage of the darkest periods of human history, the stage of rule by brute force.”

This just came across my desk. I have share it with everyone.

Yea, what the angel said

Obama goes to Heaven?

When Obama died, George Washington
met him at the Pearly Gates. He slapped
him across the face and yelled, “How dare
you try to destroy the Nation I helped
conceive?”

Patrick Henry approached, punched him
in the nose and shouted, “You wanted to
end our liberties but you failed.”

James Madison followed, kicked him in
the groin and said, “This is why I allowed
our government to provide for the common
defense!”

Thomas Jefferson was next, beat Obama
with a long cane and snarled, “It was evil
men like you who inspired me to write the
Declaration of Independence.”

The beatings and thrashings continued as
James Monroe and 66 other early Americans
unleashed their anger on the radical,
socialist, leader.

As Obama lay bleeding and in pain, an Angel
appeared. Obama wept and said, “This is not
what you promised me.”

The Angel replied, “I told you there would be
72 VIRGINIANS waiting for you in Heaven.
What did you think I said? You really need to
listen when someone is trying to tell you
something!”

Another excellent post, Debbie.

Ayn Rand was spot on concerning Israel, the Arabs, and–as Little Al pointed out–on Communism. I also hope that Paul Ryan finds out about Rand’s stances on those issues and agrees with her on them.

JeffE on August 22, 2012 at 10:18 pm

It doesn’t matter how much Ryan goes on about Ayn Rand,he is a conservative,NOT a libertarian.

The most fundamental aspect of libertarianism is personal liberty, aka ownership of your own body. Ryan and other conservatives who are sometimes mislabeled as libertarian, don’t believe in personal liberty.

In a debate with a Democratic congressman, who wanted to legalize marijiuana,Ryan wouldn’t budge. That’s not how Ayn Rand or other libertarians view illegal drugs.

Like most conservatives,he picks and chooses what personal liberty he will accept(things that he approves of).

Scott on August 22, 2012 at 10:41 pm

Don’t get all caught up in excitement over Ryan’s supposed pro-Israel views.

If elected,he in all likelyhood would be a loyal soldier to Romney. And if Romney as expected does things like calling for a halt to settlements,Ryan will either stay silent or join in on the attack.

Scott on August 22, 2012 at 10:51 pm

What are our choices? Just as it sits, for the average person, here they are: 1)Vote for Barack Hussein Obama, and,in my opinion, get four (or more) more years of worse than what we got the first four. 2) Vote for Romney/Ryan, New World Odor choice #2(Or #1, I don’t know, I haven’t been invited to the Bohemian Grove lately)3)Vote for an independent candidate as a protest vote. 4)Don’t vote, and don’t bitch, or bitch, it’s your choice guaranteed by the first amendment, at least for now.
As an addendum, which might be more important than these obvious choices, we could pray to God for our leaders and candidates and our nation(s) (Not leaving out Israel) as God instructs us.
Choice #2 and prayer seem to be the most sensible route to me right now.

RT on August 22, 2012 at 11:04 pm

There are a few things that can never be done, no matter how hard you try…

Go back in time.

Rearrange the order of the alphabet.

Create sentient life with a basic chemistry kit.

Get a roomful of libertarians to agree on anything.

That said, Ayn Rand was spot-on on the backwardness of Arab-Islamic societies vis-a-vis that of Israel.

While I agree with Norman that there should always be a check-and-balance on personal freedoms, there cannot be a restriction without setting the boundaries of any given behaviour. This is where the libertarian philosophy dovetails into traditional conservatism (aka classical liberalism).
