NY Daily News, NY Post Credit Schlussel for Breaking Napolitano Lawsuit Story

By Debbie Schlussel

As readers know, two days ago, I broke the story about New York’s top Homeland Security cop James T. Hayes’ explosive employment discrimination lawsuit against Department of Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano. Today, two of New York’s three major newspapers published the story. Both of them got it from me (the New York Post was considering an op-ed I wrote about the matter, and I gave permission to the editor to forward it to the news staff), and both of them ultimately gave me credit and links to my site. But only the New York Daily News’ reporters did the ethical thing and made sure I got credit within the article in the print edition. I called and e-mailed the New York Post reporter, Bruce Golding, and his editor to complain, and in response, they belatedly gave me credit within the online article at 10:47 a.m., after the article had been published online for over 10 hours and the print edition cuts me entirely out of my story. They’ve promised to “make it up to me,” but I’m not holding my breath (since I don’t know how you can possibly make up to someone breaking their big scoop and cutting them out of it, now that the cat is out of the bag and already old news, by their doing).

NY Daily News, NY Post Credit Schlussel for Breaking Napolitano Discrimination Lawsuit Story

I work very hard on this site and on the stories I break here. Getting written recognition and credit in the mainstream media when they use my work and tips from stories I break is the lifeblood of the site, as it helps generate more traffic this way. There is no incentive to work hard to research and break stories, if I’m just going to be ripped off without credit. Everyone at the Department of Homeland Security knows I broke the story, as they’ve been coming in droves to this site to read the story for more than two days. I would like to particularly thank New York Daily News reporter Reuven Blau, a top-notch investigative reporter and a real mensch, who made sure I got credit for my scoop. Today’s New York Daily News notes in its story, written by Reuven Blau, Joseph Straw, and Rich Schapiro:

ICE Director of Public Affairs Brian Hale blasted the suit, which was filed in May and first reported by the blog, debbieschlussel.com.

Today’s New York Post story, in which I was finally given credit, reads:

The lawsuit, which was first reported yesterday by blogger Debbie Schlussel, identifies the woman as Dora Schriro, who was later appointed by Mayor Bloomberg as commissioner of the city Department of Correction, a post she still holds.

Wrong. In fact, I reported the lawsuit on Wednesday. But close enough, I guess. In any event, at least I finally got credit. I know for certain that with the New York Daily News, I don’t have to fight for recognition and make a federal case out of it. Thanks, Reuven.

Good job Debbie, This clownitano will soon be gone.

What is it with those J-school types?
Professional jealousy?

They afraid you’re gonna take to many of their readers away and lose business?

ebayer on August 10, 2012 at 11:49 am

The NYP is a headline story on Drudge, and at least the bold blue link crediting Debbie is highly visible.

You know Michelle Malkin and the usual suspects are dying to write and comment on this story (especially since it is on Drudge), but are so childishly holding a grudge against Debbie, that they will try to blacklist the story on their sites.

Fox News tries to bury it way below in their headlines and does not credit Debbie.

John M. on August 10, 2012 at 12:00 pm

I saw Debbie’s name yesterday on a FoxNews.com article on this topic.

    Dina K on August 11, 2012 at 9:27 am

One of the commenters from the NYP pretty much sums up what I’m afraid of in this case:

“Ha ha ha… men have done this to women since the beginning of time. BFD”

This labor law attorney in St. Louis has the most comprehensive website I’ve seen covering labor law:
http://www.timslaw.com/articles.htm

ebayer on August 10, 2012 at 12:17 pm

The BFD to me is that the head of ICE used her influence to get her girlfriends a job. That IS a BFD and she should have to answer for that as well as the other lawsuit issues with the employees under her supervision.

Very important story. I’m proud of Debbie and yes she gets ripped off all the time. I am hoping this story will be covered on network television. Not holding my breath tho, they’re shills for Hussein and his admin.

BTW, Obama quietly slipped another $1.3 billion to the Muslim Brotherhood controlled Egyptian govt.

whatutalkinboutwillis on August 10, 2012 at 12:38 pm

Debbie, I have a question for you, are both the New York Post and New York Daily News are going to forward this story in their papers this weekend or did they already posted in their papers today?

The reason is because I happen to live in the New York, NY metropolitan area, and I wouldn’t mind spening $0.50 cents for both papers to read the story that you broke out here on this blog of yours 48 hours ago.

“A nation is defined by its borders, language & culture!”

SR: It’s in both papers’ print edition, today, but only the NY Daily News print edition gives me credit. DS

Sean R. on August 10, 2012 at 12:47 pm

I assume you haven’t bought either paper in a while, the news is 75 cents and the post is up to a buck on weekdays..i read both and only the news mentions this site

tim on August 10, 2012 at 1:33 pm

Thanks Debbie, as soon as I log out of my computer, I’m going to buy both the NY Post and NY Daily News in my area to read the stories that you explained here on Wednesday. This is going to be worth $1.00 I’ll spend on these two papers.

“A nation is defined by its borders, language & culture!”

    Sean R. on August 10, 2012 at 1:42 pm

The Blaze cites the New York Daily News, but says it was “first reported on the blog debbieschlussel.com” with a hyperlink.

Road Warrior on August 10, 2012 at 12:50 pm

Good job, Debbie! Proud of you!!!

Keith Brock on August 10, 2012 at 1:18 pm

DS I am glad you publicize these things because the regulars here know how hard you work on this site alone and we appreciate that and we know we can trust you.

The other frauds like to make it seem as if you’re nuts and always automatically complain about people stealing your material. Well here is bona fide proof that it does indeed happen and the idiots trying to discredit you are liars.

And they NEVER break any story or have the expertise you have. They are just Myna Birds and are the sorts who think Jihad Darrell and pompous bores like Thad McCotter are the “real deal”. If they read your hard work that would see their thinking is lazy and idiotic.

Don’t let the know-nothings bully you into thinking you’re huffing gas if you like this site. They are the dopey ones!

And that Bill Hallowell of Beck’s site did it recently so there are THREE bona fide examples just this summer!

Skunky on August 10, 2012 at 1:34 pm

Great job, Debbie! I doubt it would get national attention via Drudge Report. Oh, well.

Bob on August 10, 2012 at 1:35 pm

Never mind! I just saw the Drudge Report now. I’m surprised with that, consider that you rail against Matt Drudge on several occasions, Debbie.

Bob on August 10, 2012 at 1:38 pm

Kol Hakavod! And the NY Post article has been picked up by The Drudge Report and the link to your name is being viewed by 33 million readers today.

Mike on August 10, 2012 at 1:59 pm

Great work as usual, Debbie. Glad the NY Daily News took the high road in immediately crediting you for breaking the story.

DS_ROCKS! on August 10, 2012 at 2:00 pm

Even Fox gave Debbie credit!

From the FOX News Story:

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/08/10/napolitano-favored-female-pals-for-jobs-lawsuit-claims/

“After the suit was first reported by blogger Debbie Schlussel, DHS issued a statement knocking down the claims.”

I_AM_ME on August 10, 2012 at 2:24 pm

Hahaha! Look at that “BIG SIS” photo they have up of Janet over at Drudge. I laughed so hard I nearly had to change underwear. Is she Frank Luntz’s twin or not?!

whatutalkinboutwillis on August 10, 2012 at 2:45 pm

It’s something of an open secret out here in Arizona that Napolitano is from the island of Lesbos. Not that that matters much, but it does add something to the charges she favors women over men.

Ralph Adamo on August 10, 2012 at 3:34 pm

Great job, Debbie. Had this lawsuit concerned a white male relegating female staff to the bathroom or using sexual insults against a woman or minority, this would have been plastered all over the MSM. Frankly, it is damn spooky that networks and the MSM are fearful of even reporting stories critical of Homeland Security and usually appear to accede immediately to their requests.

Mike on August 10, 2012 at 4:03 pm

Good job. If the story was left to the media they would have covered it up.

Rob on August 10, 2012 at 4:05 pm

Mazal tov Debbie! Boy would we be breaking out the Manischewitz tonight! I sincerely look forward to some DS TV interviews, too. Could you start up again with the “Debbie Does Politics” videos you used to post? You were cute like a button in those.

A1 on August 10, 2012 at 4:07 pm

A1, you pervert, shut your pie hole. I wish Debbie would ban your ass. I don’t know why she doesn’t. Maybe your long presence on a sexual predators list makes her sympathetic.

skzion on August 10, 2012 at 4:44 pm

Skzion, if we have to put up with the tunnel-vision perversions of A1 I at least now get to enjoy you having a go at him. I love it…and appreciate it! 😀

Skunky on August 10, 2012 at 5:16 pm

        Thanks Skunky. 🙂

skzion on August 11, 2012 at 12:55 pm

I also note that the Drudge Report is carrying the story as reported by the New York Post online edition (with the wrong date of first publication, i.e., Thursday, rather than Wednesday, when Debbie’s story originally appeared):

http://www.nypost.com/p/news/national/homeland_homegirls_Se5i5dCvDQc84CE9rSpvBM?utm_medium=rss&utm_content=National

There are also many other websites picking up the story now, and also including proper attribution, so Debbie’s breaking story as a genuine scoop is intact, and getting appropriate media recognition.

Ralph Adamo on August 10, 2012 at 4:07 pm

Glad for you, Debbie.

The verdict is in on the legacy of Customs v. INS case:
They were BOTH completely F’ed up agencies who, when merged together into ICE/HSI, have formed a super-F’ed-up government monster that will never be tamed.

Sleep tight, America.

Congratulations, Debbie. Hopefully James T. Hayes’s lawsuit against Janet Napolitano–as well as a second lawsuit against her as reported by Fox News via “StillShakingMyHead”–will be successful.

JeffE on August 12, 2012 at 12:00 am

“Citizen”:

Customs was America’s oldest law enforcement agency, and was eliminated by idiotic politicians and bureaucrats in 2003 after 214 years of service to this nation. Its shattered parts were then merged with INS to form ICE and CBP. It bore no responsibility for 9/11, which saw the destruction of the Customhouse at 6 World Trade Center, yet paid the price for the megligence of the CIA and FBI, both of which were rewarded for their incompetence with increased authority and larger budgets. I proudly served as a Customs inspector and Customs special agent until I was shanghaied into DHS. Two things we can agree on. One is how bad INS was, and the second is how screwed up DHS and ICE have been since their creation over 9 years ago, with no prospect of improvement in sight.

ICEd on August 12, 2012 at 3:42 am

97% of top HSI management is former Customs worldwide and has been for the past 9 years. Managing, creating policy, promoting and auto-stimulating at every turn. Isn’t time the legacy boys in blue recognize that it is their continued legacy in charge that failed DHS. It’s not the work, its the lack of leadership. INS was screwed up no doubt but Investigations were a tight group of folks despite the other three parts of the immigration turd. As long as legacy Custom insiders hold on to power, every bit of stupidity and wrongheaded policy and action belongs to them.

Migraaah on August 13, 2012 at 7:25 pm

The thing that must have HSI s**ting their collective pants is the mention of the career path in the 2nd lawsuit. Many agents believe that the career path is an artificial tool to promote people who senior management wants to promote while suppressing the careers (through strict application of the career path) of those not in favor. People who couldn’t get 15s at HQ; people who want to leave HQ as 14s, but can’t due to the fact that HQ won’t force transfer any field-promoted 14s to HQ to backfill those who have already completed at Lear 18 months, those who were denied promotion in the field to 15 without an HQ tour leapfrogging over those who did an HQ stint, those who didn’t even complete a full 36 month HQ tour and were returned to the field as 14s while others languished 4, 5 and even 6 years at HQ – all of these aggrieved people are going to have a field day now that the floodgates are opening. We are a disgrace, and it is now on display for all to see – disgusting.

StillShakingMyHead on August 12, 2012 at 10:34 am

Agree that the career path guidance was only selectively applied, but the public and readers should note this guy was an agent all of ten years then files suit because he was passed over for jobs like ASAC??? I know men, women, and minorities with twice as much experience that were passed over for promotion as well. The filer of the second suit should look in the mirror and at his own resume if he wants to know why he was passed over. No mysteries, this is not an experienced agent. Then again, neither was Jim Hayes.

Phil on August 13, 2012 at 1:24 pm

Customs wasn’t perfect, but it worked pretty well, as evidenced by the many investigators from other agencies who came over. Merging Customs and INS was like mixing half a glass of fresh milk with half a glass of spoiled milk, which only results in a full glass of spoiled milk. The problems at INS were carried over, which is not a knock against INS agents, many of whom were welcomed over to Customs over the years before 9/11, and were great investigators. However, the political nature of immigration enforcement continues, to the detriment of the enforcement mission. Many legacy Customs investigative authorities are also being picked at by the FBI, ATF, DEA, etc., like jackals circling a dying animal. Good luck to those who are trying to do the right thing, because it’s an uphill battle with politicians, the media, the public, and sad to say, our own management.
