Axl Rose, Guns ‘N’ Roses Rock Israel Tonight; Ignored Calls for Boycott

By Debbie Schlussel

Add Axl Rose and Guns ‘N’ Roses to the list of performers with a conscience, performers who just say no to anti-Semitic boycotts of Israel. Despite calls for the band to boycott Israel–and nasty anti-Israel comments on the Guns ‘N’ Roses site by Jew-haters (which were well responded to by GNR fans), the band traveled to Israel and will appear tonight at Tel Aviv’s Ganei Yehoshua Yarkon Park. Since Israel is seven hours ahead (of the Eastern Time Zone), they should be taking the stage in a few hours (they are notorious for going on really late). They last performed in Israel in 1993 but are now back in the Jewish State.

Nineteen years after his last performance in the Holy Land, Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose is now back in Israel. Following his arrival at Ben Gurion airport this morning, Rose and the rest of Guns N’s Roses will perform in Tel Aviv on Tuesday night as part of the city’s Summer Rock 2012 music festival.

“I’m glad to be here again,” the 50 year old Rose told Mako, an Israeli news website. Rose’s last appearance in Israel was with Guns N’ Roses on their “Use Your Illusion Tour”, in May 1993. This time around, Guns N’ Roses’ Jewish guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal will be performing in place of Slash, the band’s former guitarist who left the group in 1996.

According to Israeli media reports, Rose’s requests included a private gym to be built in his suite, nine rooms with scented soaps, the best masseuse and chiropractor in Israel, and a bouquet of six red roses and six white roses for every room.

Hey, its good for Israeli business. And while I’m not into scented soaps, Israel has all kinds of fantastic olive oil soap made in Haifa, Israel.

Yeah. But it ain’t Guns w/o Slash! Just bury the Dadgummed hatchets already, Kids!

The Reverend Jacques on July 3, 2012 at 12:09 pm

Little Billy Bailey (I think that is his real name) is unfortunately, still an asshole. Imagine Ringo touring with a group of musicians and having the nerve to call it The Beatles!

Tasso on July 3, 2012 at 12:34 pm

Slash’s real name is Saul Hudsen. His mom is African-American and his dad is British-but not Jewish. One of reasons for Slash’s animsity towards Axl is Axl’s constant use of the word ‘ni**er’ (even though he knows of Slash’s heritage). Axl is a bloated pig of a rock star singlehandedly destroying Guns’N’Roses with his erratic behavior, constant tardiness and love of firing longtime band members on a whim. He could care less about boycotts, he just wants $$$$.

L: My cousin grew up with and went to school with the Hudsons. She told me he is Jewish, etc. Thanks for the correction. But I don’t care why Axl is there. He’s there. He could boycott but isn’t. DS

DS: We’ll your cousin’s an idiot.

Rose never gave a rats arse about PC. He’s stuck it to all the favored groups just because he could. Isn’t that what rockers are supposed to do?

Elvis Costello, Roger Waters, Annie Lennox, Gorillaz and all the other Jew-hating musical “stars” can sit and twist. BTW, just noticed that most of the Jew-haters are British. Makes sense. The Brits have always been Arab-loving, anti-Semites.

Adam on July 3, 2012 at 1:27 pm

Say, don’t tar the Brits with the same brush. Paul McCartney and Pet Shop Boys are every bit as British as the ones you’ve named, and each has played in Israel. And while Madonna, another performer before the Israelis (and a personal friend of Bibi), is an American, she’s also an expat over there.

    Go Axl!

Seek on July 3, 2012 at 2:24 pm

Not ALL Brits are anti-Jewish, but I forgive you for thinking so when I recall the boycott-advocating union & academic scum along with the BBC.

Has anyone explored the mental sickness of people who hate Jews?

brickwood on July 3, 2012 at 6:29 pm

BTW: remember when Gorillaz and Damon Albarn boycotted Israel after Turkish thugs attempted to ambush and murder Israeli soldiers enforcing the UN-approved blockade of Gaza? Well, he took the band straight to Damascus, where Gorillaz happily played for Assad’s bloodthirsty regime:

What is wrong with these people?

Adam on July 3, 2012 at 1:56 pm

Axl Rose is one of the most mentally ill “rock stars” going. It’s such a pity. Some people just go down that road and never come back.

Still, it’s great to hear anyone supporting Israel. If you’re a good person I can’t see why one wouldn’t.

I like to hear who is pro and anti-Israel. Axl may be nuts but he has nothing on the nutters who openly hate Israel.

Thanks for naming names Adam. I always like to know…

Good for Axl & Israel…another Indiana musician.. 😉

Jesse Wininger on July 3, 2012 at 2:26 pm

I’d hardly say that Axl Rose—at this stage in his career—is performing just for money. More likely, he truly enjoys performing because show-business is in his blood.

Also, although Slash isn’t a Jew, the group’s former drummer, Steven Adler, is a Jew, and he accepted an award on behalf of the group for its induction into Cleveland’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame a couple of months ago.

I also find it encouraging that many of the great pop acts resist the attempts to boycott Israel, and proudly perform there. For example, I hear that Red Hot Chili Peppers and Lenny Kravitz will be performing in Israel later this season.

(Of course, the world’s greatest classical musicians are always performing in Israel, as it is one of the world’s great centers for classical music, but the anti-Israel crowd doesn’t bother to urge them to boycott Israel, not just because those musicians wouldn’t listen to them anyway, but also because much of the anti-Israel crowd isn’t cultured enough to know or care about classical music.)

Ralph Adamo on July 3, 2012 at 4:51 pm

    Well said, Ralph.

brickwood on July 3, 2012 at 6:32 pm

Alex needs money! I remember him say he would never play for Jews.

Douglas on July 3, 2012 at 6:53 pm

I recently realized that boycotters and other people who oppose Israel and side with the “Palestinians” are simply garden-variety antisemitic racists. Not because of the somewhat tortured progressions of logic I’ve seen here and there that seek to establish this equivalence, but simply because the wealth of accurate information on Israel and its history that is now universally available means that those who oppose Israel have made the intellectually dishonest choice to ignore or distort reality for reasons involving their own subjective personal agendas. There is simply no way that any rational and responsible person, once in possession of the facts, could conclude in good faith that the properly moral option is to attack and degrade Israel and its people. This form of deliberately unfair and one-sided perception is nothing other than racism.

Mathias on July 3, 2012 at 7:12 pm

Hi Mathias – you said it better than I could.

brickwood on July 3, 2012 at 8:20 pm

Rose gets a bum rap for his confrontation with a black security guard at his concert. The individual in question had been needlessly roughing up some kids in the front area, on the main floor. Rose saw what was going on an lost his temper. It ain’t right, but that’s what was going on. I’ve never heard a thing about the other stuff. Slash is awesome, and has been touring on his own. I really don’t think they ever have to work again after their early successes. They like to perform. I’m just glad to see they’re playing again.

samurai on July 3, 2012 at 7:15 pm

That’s not Guns N Roses. That’s Axel with some other dudes. But still metal/hard rock, whatever you want to call it, is SUPPOSED to be about bad-assness. The entire ethos is telling everyone else to f off – “I’m here to kick ass and chew bubblegum and I’m all out of bubblegum”. If any band doesn’t play a gig in Israel, or any other country, for a boycott or whatever, they’re pussies and should never be described as a rock stars again.

Matt on July 3, 2012 at 8:33 pm

I’m not much of a Guns N’Roses/Axl Rose fan, but I am glad that Axl Rose and his band are performing in Israel and he/they deserve credit for that.

JeffE on July 3, 2012 at 9:47 pm

Great! Axl always follows his ideas and his heart ;)And he’s nor racist at all.

lucky on July 3, 2012 at 9:50 pm

A gig is a gig. Would love to see Israel let alone perform there. Why people boycott a free country but ignore the rape & murder around Israel continues to mystify me.

P. Aaron on July 3, 2012 at 10:38 pm

An addendum of sorts to Ralph Adamo’s post…

RHCP’s original guitarist was Jewish.

Hillel Slovak. z”l. Still original badass in the Uplift MoFo Party Plan.

The Reverend Jacques on July 4, 2012 at 1:08 am

Debbie you are a very cute person and I like you. Also lots of British Jews stop being Jewish and then deny they ever were. I bet your cousin was right about the Hudsons. I’m pretty sure Kate Middleton falls into the British/formerly Jewish category via her genius social climbing mum. If Carole Middleton had gone into Physics we’d probably have commercial time travel. And Prince William could hardly complain given that his own maternal grandmother started out Jewish.

A1 on July 4, 2012 at 2:19 am

Looks like the perv A1 is testing the waters again.

skzion on July 4, 2012 at 10:12 am

Actually, since I do like GNR (November Rain and Don’t Cry are among my favorites), I’m glad that I don’t have to cringe every time I listen to them. Wish more groups were like them.

Infidel on July 4, 2012 at 4:56 am

Metal-washing –

Here’s Guns N Roses’ rendition of Hatikvah followed by
“Don’t Cry For Me”

Really cool even if you’re not a heavy metal music fan!

NormanF on July 4, 2012 at 6:00 am

Gotta give them credit!! They stood up to the radical hate-filled left-wing bigots!

Dave on July 4, 2012 at 9:46 am

While playing Israel maybe they could call themselves “Guns’n’Moses”. There’s a company that sells t-shirts that say that so there would probably be some sort of copyright issues.

CornCoLeo on July 4, 2012 at 10:21 am

Oh, actually there’s another band with the name “Guns-n-Moses”, so I guess Guns-n-Roses couldn’t use the name no matter what.

CornCoLeo on July 4, 2012 at 10:25 am

THis is the least I would expect from Gunsandroses. If he fails Israel what does he expect fromm non Israelis????? I am a Christian myself but I applaud guns and roses for their decision.

G. R. Scharoubim on July 4, 2012 at 12:03 pm

Bottom line… GNR ain’t GNR without the chemistry of Axl, Izzy, Duff, Slash and Steven, for whom we should pray that he be granted the serenity to accept the things he can’t change, the courage to change the things he can and the wisdom to know the difference.

And no offence: “Chinese Democracy” sucked.

The Reverend Jacques on July 4, 2012 at 12:21 pm

… although I wonder: did Axl keep Buckethead? That dude’s sick on the axe!

The Reverend Jacques on July 4, 2012 at 12:22 pm

Thanks 4 publishing this— Pure banging rock with balls–Axel Rose is unlike the herd, the lemmings, the Lilliputians. Goes where he wants, says want he wants, and communicates with whomever he wants, not just a bunch of namby-pamby pabulum loving moonies.
