Sexist NBC Liberal Hypocrites Get Away With It on “Today Show”

By Debbie Schlussel

It has to be said: liberal NBC is getting away with what few employers could–with what NBC News constantly attacks other businesses for doing.

I’m not among those crying over now-former NBC “Today Show” host Ann Curry’s axing after barely a year on the job as “co-anchor.” She made $10 million her first year and stands to make another $10 to $20 million in her exit package. After her tearful exit Thursday Morning, she’s laughing all the way to the bank. She’ll collect most of the dough owed her, without having to wake up at three in the morning. Plus, she has a new deal that allows her to sleep in and cover puff stories on a whim. Nice work if you can get it. But, still, it bears saying that NBC liberals are getting away with something that would never fly in conservative circles: apparent sexism of sorts. As readers know, I’m no feminist. But I gotta call a spade a spade. And you won’t hear a peep about this from the feminist militants who typically whine loudly about this stuff.

Hypocritical NBC Sexism Keeps Warmed-Over Bloviating Liberal Matt Lauer Around

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

NBC is blaming Curry for a slight drop in the ratings and the first loss in the ratings to ABC’s “Good Morning America” in a long time. But she was only there for a year, and Matt Lauer is a snide, arrogant, balding, ever-less-watchable bore and uber-liberal harangue artist, who certainly bears a good deal of the blame in the ratings slide. And yet, he was rewarded with a new, long-term $25 million per year contract and given no criticism or blame. Instead of putting this on him, they blamed it on the woman, when, in fact, Curry did a workmanlike job as far as hosting “Today” goes. She was a newsreader on the show for 20 years, having been passed over to co-host the show at least once. And when she finally gets it, she’s dumped after a year, not Lauer. And since “Today’s” audience is dominated by women, it would help to have a younger, hotter guy than aging, stale liberal bloviator Lauer. They probably should have kept Curry, and definitely should’ve dumped him. (His only decent interview ever was handed to him by a nutty Tom Cruise, who basically did a monologue while Lauer sat there and took credit.) Yes, she is an unabashed liberal, but a lot more bearable and significantly less smug than Lauer.

And, in what is usually used by trial lawyers as a clear sign of sexism and ageism, instead of replacing Lauer with a younger, more handsome male replacement, NBC is apparently replacing Curry with a woman nearly two decades younger: the always sullen, usually awkward, duller-than-wet-Q-tips, crappy former lawyer Savannah Guthrie. If this happened in the regular workplace, the newly-fired and replaced employee would have excellent evidence of gender and age discrimination. And that’s not to mention that Curry is part Asian while Guthrie is just a plain ‘ole White chick (as is Lauer, minus the chick part, or maybe not minus it). Hey, where’s the minority affirmative action at NBC that they constantly whine about when it looks like it’s missing at other companies?

But regular employers and non-liberals have to face a different set of rules–hypocritical rules and double standards which NBC News and the “Today Show” regularly join in imposing on them. NBC will never face the discrimination complaints and lawsuits filed every day by lawyers against innocent small business owners making legitimate business decisions and struggling to survive, even though–as in this case–there is a much clearer case that mega-media conglomerate NBC discriminates far more openly and deliberately.

Maybe NBC should change its name to the National Hypocrites’ Network. Do as we say at the Peacock Network. Not as we do.

“Matt Lauer is a snide, arrogant, balding, ever-less-watchable bore and uber-liberal harangue artist…” – and that’s on a good day (rimshot, please). But seriously, he seems to be following very much, behind-the-scenes, in the footsteps of his even more snide, arrogant, ever-less-watchable bore and uber-liberal harangue artist predecessor (notice the term “balding” was not used in this case), Bryant Gumbel – during whose run as host there was much flak from the press in 1989 when Jane Pauley was dumped as co-host for the ultimately short-lived Deborah Norville.

Yet even in message-board forums, blogs etc., which are liberal left-dominated, there are those who smell ageism in the dropping of Ms. Curry and the double-standard thereof.

ConcernedPatriot on June 29, 2012 at 4:21 am

In addition, the dumping of Curry follows on the heels (no pun intended) of NBC’s New York flagship, WNBC (Channel 4), dropping Sue Simmons as co-anchor of their newscasts after 32 years, ostensibly because her $2.5 million-per-year was too “pricey” for new NBC owners Comcast (while her longtime co-anchor, Chuck Scarborough, remains with the station, despite earning a comparative “pricey” salary). However, not only sexism, but ageism and (gasp) racism have been whispered at as probable causes (Ms. Simmons is 69, and African-American). Yet another example of liberal-left NBC and its stations getting away with something they would have harangued other businesses for – the “do as we say, not as we do” syndrome.

ConcernedPatriot on June 29, 2012 at 4:27 am

Appreciate you are not a feminist, but I don’t -think- sexism was involved here. I think it was the sort of thing Donald Trump would do on “The Apprentice”–you are in charge of a project and things go south, you are gone.
It is like the mentality of businesses… you were the only worker in the building when it blew up? It doesn’t matter that a tsunami suddenly came out of nowhere; you were there and it blew up so you got to go (not trying to imply Trump here). I don’t think it matters much who would have been the new co-host–the mentality, I think, is: there is a new co-host and the show drops in ratings, get rid of new co-host.

MH on June 29, 2012 at 5:18 am

Wanted to add something. I think an example of what I was talking about is movie studio heads. Think Rich Ross, former Chairman of Disney. Although Disney has successful movies after he became Chairman in 2009, he left the position in April after two movies flopped. Think also Mark Canton (Columbia Pictures) and Andy Albeck over the flop “Heaven’s Gate” (United Artists). Former Disney head of production Nina Jacobson was fired after M. Night Shyamalan left Disney, taking his film “Lady in the Water” with him (fired while she was still in the delivery room after giving birth), but she went on to produce “The Hunger Games”.

MH on June 29, 2012 at 5:43 am

MH, Ms. Schlussel is making a huge point about HYPOCRISY – irrespective of whether it was or was not good business sense to set Curry aside. The point is that NBC, its employees and fellow liberals like to look at the physical, gender, and color make-up of OTHER companies’ employees and then make pejorative allegations of those companies and their managers as being racists, etc…, based on the appearance of their employees. Liberals and liberal organizations such as NBC are the ones to cry foul and claim pre-meditated and racist tendencies of companies just for hiring and promoting those people the company believes will do the best job. Your examples of Trump, etc., are mute. Ms. Schlussel didn’t write her column today to blast companies for firing females or Asians, or even males – but to point out the hypocrisy of the Left of always pressuring other companies to prove they are not racist or sexist by forcing them to hire people into positions that the companies may not want to hire or promote just to avoid law suits.

    Dina K on June 29, 2012 at 12:18 pm

Dina K: “Your examples of Trump, etc., are mute”? Like the button on a remote control? “mute”?
You really missed the point. Reread. Rich Ross, etc. Race, gender, etc. is irrelevant–if business goes bad, and there is a “new guy in charge”, guess who is likely to get walking papers? Andy Albeck is a example.

MH on June 29, 2012 at 3:09 pm

Sorry, professor: “moot” – is that better – I know the difference; fast typing can lead to typos – big deal – read the greater message – the hypocrisy is the point, not the hiring/firing based on management’s desires, as you are pointing out. The POINT, MH, is that NBC is by their own liberal standards, a racist organization by virtue of the outcome of their firing Ann and replacing her with a Caucasian. That’s all libs look at – outcomes, and then they decide that there was a pre-conceived and purposeful action to deny minorities high positions. By the way – you are a real ass for trying to embarrass a person for a typo instead of dealing with the issue.

        Dina K on June 29, 2012 at 3:15 pm

That wasn’t a typo, you used the wrong word. A typo occurs when you hit the wrong key or miss a key altogether. I’m just sayin’…typos result from poor command of typing, not poor command of language.

Richard on June 29, 2012 at 3:27 pm

Hey, MH, your second silly reply to me only solidified the fact that you are arrogant and disrespectful and unable to actually critically analyze.

          Dina K on June 29, 2012 at 3:54 pm

@Richard: I was thinking and pronouncing the word ‘moot’ in my head, but typed “mute” instead; hence, I mis-TYPED – that is a TYPO. U and MH belong in preschool together sniggering at people who are not as “cool” as are the two of you.

          Dina K on June 29, 2012 at 4:01 pm

Dina, you made a common mistake and we ALL make them…with spellings and those pesky words that sound the same but have a different meaning. We all make them and I will do the same thing soon.

What is most important is that you got the point CORRECT.

MH was not using the correct analogy. But you were SPOT. ON. Thanks!

Skunky on June 29, 2012 at 4:30 pm

Dina K: You used “mute”. You discredited your own post, but calling it a “typo” just makes it worse. You are not even interacting with the names I supplied that illustrate that it is a common business practice, not sexism, behind the Ann Curry firing. The nail in the coffin is your choice of name calling. You have invalidated whatever you were trying to say. It would have been better to have reread what I wrote, because you completely missed it.

MH on June 29, 2012 at 9:04 pm

MH here is a word YOU misspelled in your last post…

          basicallyy

It’s basically. Do you want people coming on here and pointing it out to you in a silly, unhealthy way like a kooky mental fixation? NO! Give it up. We all make grammar and typo mistakes and will continue to. If you keep up your silly obnoxiousness (as you totally miss the point of the thread…SG may have taken over for AC but Matt “The Reverse Chia Pet” Lauer still has his job with a FAT contract…even thou’ HE is the reason no one wants to watch!!! He’s the one that made them fire AC and the cause of the poor ratings!!!) Every time YOU post you’ll be called on your misspellings and typos.

Skunky on June 30, 2012 at 1:13 pm

MH, Dina may have meant “moot” but her point to you was a valid one.

Liberals like to shout it out but don’t walk it like they talk it. DS was right-on when she pointed out the reverse chia pet is prolly the main reason the ratings are down but the dumb broad got the boot. Blame it on the girl. The fact is the problem (in total) is NOT Ann Curry but more so ML. But he is left at the helm. The ship continues to sink….

Skunky on June 29, 2012 at 3:21 pm

Skunky: why are you defending someone who whose response consisted of “mute”? She didn’t make a valid point and you have both missed it.

MH on June 29, 2012 at 8:35 pm

MH because Dina made a common mistake and her point was way valid than yours. Sorry, yours did not fly and Dina told you so earlier today. Fail.

Skunky on June 29, 2012 at 9:14 pm

Skunky: “fall”? Like in the season? The “fail” is that you sided with someone who said used “mute” as a “valid” argument and then basicallyy ignored the fact that you missed the point. You both have. How about looking up some of those names, Skunky? Do you really think sexism is in play when a woman’s replacement is–a woman?

MH on June 30, 2012 at 12:22 pm

MH do you have a sight problem? I properly wrote FAIL the first time NOT Fall! DUH!!!! What did you fall on your brain????

Give it up MH. Go comb your Donald Trump wig. Dina set you straight the first time when she had to school you in what DS meant because you did not get it on your first read. RIF!

Instead, you took the DUMB position that it was about Donald Trump and what he does on his stupid show. Ah, NO! Go read Dina’s first response to you and take a pill so you can get over her typo. Or call your shrink because you’re a nutter!

Skunky on June 30, 2012 at 12:52 pm

Skunky, I think MH (interesting initials, think about it) should “basicallyy” “mute” herself. To not do so would be a major “fall.”

Italkit on July 1, 2012 at 1:26 am

Skunky–“Are you blind?” when you have been the point from the beginning? Straw man arguments and now name calling? You’ve lost the argument. That’s what happens when a person name calls.
Still claiming the illogical “mute” posting was valid, all while trying to maintain an untenable position, I see.
Your straw man arguments and emoting didn’t work, and your name calling lost the argument. I expected better from you, Skunky.
I do want to admit I did make an error in misreading “fall”. The monitor had displayed it other that what it was. I would expect you to do the same, but I don’t think you shall. Skunky, you’ve lost the argument, and straw man, name calling arguments isn’t going to change that.

MH on July 1, 2012 at 1:48 pm

I suppose you could look at this another way: By retaining Lauer, they are not doing the obvious liberal thing by getting rid of the white male.

Daring, I guess.

Still, the show sucks, and probably has ever since Dave Garroway and J. Fred Muggs left.

Red Ryder on June 29, 2012 at 9:04 am

While I am not bald yet, don’t criticize Lauer for being bald. Willard Scott has been bald for 56 years, and we here in Washington, DC love our native son Willard. Nicest guy you would ever want to meet.

Jonathan E. Grant on June 29, 2012 at 10:06 am

Jonathan I remember Willard Scott, the ONLY real and nice person on that show…EVER! I rarely watch TV but I do miss the joy and friendly spirit of Willard Scott, bless his heart!

Alabama Pride on June 29, 2012 at 10:52 am

NBC/MSNBC is a rather White place considering how often they excoriate others for having a lack of minority representation. Also, the women on that news operation, with some exceptions, tend to have quite subordinate roles compared to the men.

It just proves that behind the progressive rhetoric many leftists are quite reactionary at heart. Their antics are more of a pose designed for career and social advancement.

I can imagine the following only somewhat exceeds the reality of the situation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjxY9rZwNGU

Worry on June 29, 2012 at 11:06 am

I don’t blame Lauer from being bald. I’m bald and I have been told I look like Avery Brooks did in Star Trek DS9. What I do blame him for is for being a leftwing ,liberal democrat suckup, girlyman. Old lite the loafers Matt should’ve been the one to go not Ms Curry. Sure she was also a stooge for the liberals and a suckup to all things Obama but look at this from her stand point. The “men” over at the Nothing But Clinton channel are just blaming her for the slide in the ratings when the toady Matt should shoulder some of the blame. Instead they give the buttkisser a new multimillion dollar contract. I betcha the men(are there any)who watch Today will like the attractive but dullsville Odummer rah rah girl Savannah Guthrie when she takes over. I have to ask is there any interview challenged younger Obama ankle biters that could take Lauer’s place? And where are the silver backed fembots on this. Oh that’s right this is NBC after all and not “Faux” News. My mistake.

Ken b on June 29, 2012 at 11:07 am

EXACTLY right, Ms. Schlussel. No one is more boring and insufferable in his pretentiousness than Matt Lauer. It is difficult to watch him, so I don’t. Ann Curry was not the problem. The producer and programmers need to go as well as Lauer. Also, it is correct that liberals are always looking at people’s skin color and gender when assessing whether OTHER people and companies are racist – based solely on the outcome as being some kind of proof of initial purposeful ill-intent. However, as in the case of the Today Show, they didn’t replace Curry with another person of color or minority ethnicity – they went with who they WANTED – should we then conclude, as liberals always do, as you mentioned, Ms. Schlussel, that this NBC act proves, by virtue of outcome alone, that they are indeed a racist network? I am fed up with of liberal hypocrisy.

Dina K on June 29, 2012 at 12:07 pm

I enjoyed DS’ summation. Especially her go at the reverse chia pet Matt Lauer. What a crashing bore that POS is. Ann Curry is one of the most dumb and hypocritical idiots going (she complained about “first class” air accommodations but still indulges in always buying a first class seat. STFU Ann and enjoy what you can afford w/out your dopey Liberal phoniness!) but DS brought up a an awesome point…Matt Lauer, the effete freak should have been shown the door not Ann Curry.

When he was still “hair-in-a-can”, Lauer had a nice little scandal going when he first got married because even thou’ he is faggy (not in a gay way…just effeminate like a metrosexual) he was womanizing here and there. Under rug swept that went but I never forgot. Just as I don’t forget about Bill “Loofah Boy/Falafel” O’Reilly. Really NBC…if women like the reverse chia pet they are hiding that they are lesbionic. He’s as manly as 15 year old’s uunicorn-ridden pink bedroom! Try harder.

I have a different opinion on his silly interview with that sneaky bastard Tom Cruise. I don’t like TC for many reasons (he’s a fraud and uses Scientology to hide his frauds) but I did like that he could call the glib Matt Lauer glib…because that idiot IS. And the smug girly man had to take it. I also like a tiny chunk of what he said about psychiatric pharmaceuticals…too many people are on them and too many Drs prescribe them. However, when ensconced in his total Scientology argument he and his dumb message is nutty.

Feminists are frauds. They will sell their tiny souls out to gain something and will happily do a “Lewinsky” to gain something. Hypocrite nutters!

Skunky on June 29, 2012 at 1:31 pm

NBC can’t lose Matt- He is their super Liberal puke. Remember when Matt was dating the Black man turned woman through sex change operation??

Maybe she wanted out.

After all it is television.

Nothing is real.

“And yet, he was rewarded with a new, long-term $25 million per year contract and given no criticism or blame. Instead of putting this on him, they blamed it on the woman…”

Excellent observation, Debbie. Yesterday I’d read an article on the firing, but the inequity of the firing didn’t occur to me until you pointed that out.

That is indeed funny, once again, the silence of the liberals and feminists on what should be an outrage in a normal, non-progressive world.

DS_ROCKS! on June 29, 2012 at 4:53 pm

The reverse Chia Pet has more estrogen than most ladies but he still has that roving eye…and that ginormous contract!

It’s disgusting, but I’d always heard that TV execs ask ONE important question about a potential female host or news anchor–would most American men want to *bleep* her?

Liberals apparently don’t ask those kinds of questions about the desirableness of male hosts. Or do they?

Looks like NBC took a survey of American men, and found out it’s Guthrie, not Curry, who is center stage in their fantasies.

Aurora on June 29, 2012 at 9:50 pm

Wimpy liberal mens with big black-framed glasses may find Samantha Guthrie attractive, but real conservative men don’t.

Ann Curry… yawn.
Al Roker… Al Borer.
Matt Lauer…. Matt Liar.
Today Show…Yesterday Show.

Whatever.

Bob on June 30, 2012 at 10:07 am

I agree with Debbire’s point about NBC’s “Do as I say not as I do” behaviors. But I recall reading that Ann Curry’s favorite role model is Helen Thomas. I have no use for Curry or Lauer. And rgarding some others that were mentioned above such as Sue Simmons: OMG! Immediately after 9/11 she mugged a disgusted face into the TV cameras every time anything patriotic or sympathtic to the USA was said or shown- clearly displaying which side SHE was on. This was one of the first times I realized how anti-American the media was. And the dasterdly Al Roker. The day after 9/11, he and Peter Jennings ran a TV special in which they gathered high-school aged kids in a TV studio and preached to them that the USA was bad, muslims had no choice but to be violent against America and that the kids should learn to love islam and hate the USA. Having spent 9/11 near ground zero and suffering my own personal shock – I was horrified to see the hate spewed by Roker and Jennings. Roker used to be everyone’s favorite weather guy
(including mine). In a flash, he revealed how corrupt and hateful he was. I am no longer stunned at the antics of these multi-millionaires who can, as Debbie says, cry Boo-Hoo all the way to their bank accounts. Meanwhile, many of us struggle to pay the ever growing left-wing taxes that these anti-American media millionaires happily cheer on.

What did this poor woman do to enrage them this much? To spread this much slander and destroy her whole career, because she wasn’t bubbly enough during the stupid cooking segments? http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/television/ann-curry-bashed-nbc-news-president-steve-capus-weak-cooking-segments-celebrity-interviews-article-1.1105700

I say “poor” because no one who does their job at the best level they can, deserves to be treated this way and have a whole career thrown away because management made a poor decision. It’s not like she was unknown at NBC. If it wasn’t a good fit, say goodbye, wish her well and get on with the new hire.

Italkit on July 1, 2012 at 9:53 am

“the discrimination complaints and lawsuits filed every day by lawyers against innocent small business owners making legitimate business decisions and struggling to survive,”

Are all discrimination complaints and lawsuits against small businesses frivolous? Do only large, megacorporations discriminate?

I thought I saw a solicitation for work representing plaintiffs a few days ago in one of your posts.

I can tell you, small businesses do discriminate, and do violate the law. I’ve seen it. They are probably much more likely to do it because they don’t understand their obligations under the law, and they are far less careful in how they handle personnel actions. Of course, they are far less likely to have sophisticated and expensive management side labor or employment counsel advising them on how to do things and how to avoid problems.

It’s hypocritical to suggest that small businesses don’t discriminate, or that all lawsuits are against small, struggling innocent business owners. They’re not always so innocent. A person seeking plaintiff’s work should know that.
