MLK, Jr. Cha-Ching

By Debbie Schlussel
The name, Martin Luther King, Jr., is worth a lot financially. And I can understand his family’s desire to protect its value and carefully license it out for the best financial opportunities.
But let’s be clear. They’re not doing this out of any sense of public service or for any noble cause. They’re doing it for the same reason Jimi Hendrix’s family accepts millions in royalties for him, each year: CHA-CHING!
If they were really doing this for anything other than financial greed, they wouldn’t be doing this:

The family of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. has charged the foundation building a monument to the civil rights leader on the National Mall about $800,000 for the use of his words and image – an arrangement one leading scholar says King would have found offensive.

mlkmonument.jpg

The memorial – including a 28-foot sculpture depicting King emerging from a chunk of granite – is being paid for almost entirely with private money in a fundraising campaign led by the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation. The monument will be turned over to the National Park Service once it is complete.
The foundation has been paying the King family for the use of his words and image in its fundraising materials. . . .
“I don’t think the Jefferson family, the Lincoln family … I don’t think any other group of family ancestors has been paid a licensing fee for a memorial in Washington,” said Cambridge University historian David Garrow, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his biography of King. “One would think any family would be so thrilled to have their forefather celebrated and memorialized in D.C. that it would never dawn on them to ask for a penny.”
King would have been “absolutely scandalized by the profiteering behavior of his children,” Garrow said.
According to financial documents reviewed by The Associated Press, the foundation paid $761,160 in 2007 to Intellectual Properties Management Inc., an entity run by King’s family. Documents also show a “management” fee of $71,700 was paid to the family estate in 2003. . . .
In the 1990s, the family reached settlements with USA Today and CBS over their use of King’s “I Have a Dream” speech without permission. . . . But historians and the National Park Service said they are not aware of any other case in which builders of a national monument had to license the image of their subject.

And it’s not just me and David Garrow who think this is objectionable.
It’s also Black commentator Cynthia Tucker, Editorial Page Editor of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The project’s organizers have also been subjected to the exquisite torture of dealing with the King family, which has demanded tribute even as fund-raisers have struggled to raise $120 million for construction. The Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation recently disclosed that it had paid the King heirs $800,000 to use their father’s image and likeness in its fund-raising.
Never mind that the King memorial will be the first built on the National Mall commemorating a black person. Never mind that the memorial will represent widespread national recognition of King’s contributions to American democracy.
And never mind that the revelations of this extortion may well curb the enthusiasm – and close the wallets – of potential donors. While Henry Johnson, president of the foundation, went out of his way to say the money paid to the Kings was not a problem, one major donor asked that its funds not be used to pay the King estate.
“We think the memorial is an important and overdue recognition, but we really don’t want to get involved with relationships with the family and their estate,” Rebecca Rimel, president and CEO of the Pew Charitable Trusts, told reporters. Pew has donated $1 million.
If news of this latest money-grab is surprising, it shouldn’t be. King’s heirs have spent their adult lives turning their father’s legacy into a profit center. No books about King may be written, no songs about him sung, no museums dedicated to his memory unless money is paid to those greedy, grasping King children.

The whole thing reminds me of the Rosa Parks story–the real Rosa Parks story you never hear about her greedy family which didn’t know her when she was alive.
While the entire cadre of civil rights movement race merchants constantly trot out the name of Rosa Parks and the images of her refusing to get up from her seat on the bus, they ignored her poverty and destitute state during the last decades of her life.
When a story ran in the Detroit papers about how Rosa Parks was broke, frail from illness and aging, and about to be evicted from her apartment in a bad section of Detroit, no-one in the civil rights trade could be bothered to help her. Nor would any of Rosa Parks family members bother to help her.
Instead, two wealthy Jews–you know the evil Zionist Jew crackers, Max Fisher and A. Alfred Taubman, gave Rosa Parks a fancy apartment, rent-free for the rest of her life, in a luxe development on the Detroit River. They also gave her regular, generous stipends for food and paid for her to be cared for and have live-in help.
But, at Rosa Parks funeral, suddenly all the race merchants–Farrakhan, Sharpton, Jackson, Jeremiah Wright–were there to show they were down with the Rosa Parks legacy, so down with it that they couldn’t bother to help her when she was alive. Ditto for all of Parks’ family members. It was the White Zionist Jew interlopers who took care of her.
It was with this in mind that I laughed to myself each time I read cover stories in the Detroit papers about Parks “beloved” family members fighting over the rights to her estate, so they could make millions licensing out her name and image. You know, the same name and image none of ’em refused to set foot near, when she was alive, sick, and about to be kicked out of her home.
Yup, “cha-ching” is the universal sound that brings the families of deceased civil rights leaders to their sudden “nobility” and righteousness, once their family members are but disintegrated remains.
Yes, greed is good. But only to a point.

Debbie, when I worked in radio, FOR NPR MIND YOU WHEN MY BRAIN WAS NOT IN FULL DEVELOPMENT…one of the first stories I did was to cover an event at a local school in Greenwich, CT. This was after three students put a racial code in the Greenwich High School yearbook.
At the event…ROSA PARKS. I was following a reporter from WTNH-TV New Haven named Sally Ann Moely (who now does weather at WNBC Channel 4 in NYC) and we did a semi-presser with her. I was maybe a foot away from her.
It’s incredible a woman who had a small frame and I think she was in a wheelchair, seemed larger than life. If only I knew about her poverished state. Maybe that wheelchair was a clue.

The only possible way Kings relatives could be looked at as anything but blood sucking parasites is if they donated ALL the money to a worthy charity. But they aren’t doing that. Disgraceful.
Funny you mention Parks as well. Me and a friend had that exact discussion after the story broke when she died. Living in poverty she is mugged by a lowlife and who does something to help out? The evil white man, not the justice bros. I read that Dingell actually got her some kind of assistance as well. I can’t believe I actually wrote something positive about a dumocrat.
[S: NOPE. DINGELL HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. HE MIGHT HAVE TRIED TO TAKE CREDIT, BUT MAX FISHER AND A. ALFRED TAUBMAN WERE THE ONES WHO FUNDED HER AND KEPT HER IN COMFORT FOR THE LAST 2.5 DECADES OF HER LIFE. DS]

Michael ( Martin Luther ) King Communist
Alan Stang Covered the CompleteStory
http://www.alanstang.com/index.php?/site/comments/mike_martin_luther_king_jr_uncelebrate_today/
Most Americans recognize that shakedown artists like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are working an immensely lucrative racket, sponsored by the conspiracy for world government and implemented by the nationís Communist government schools. Train white boys ñ honkies ñ from kindergarten through high school and college to believe they are guilty of ìracism,î and when they are grown they will collaborate in shaking themselves down. Hey, if it ainít broke, donít fix it, right Jesse?
Because of intense, lifelong brainwashing, not enough Americans yet understand that Mike (Martin Luther) King, Jr., is an even bigger fraud; that in fact everything we have been told about him is phony, even starting with his name, which his father changed to enhance their career in religion. As part of the uncelebration of the phony holiday inflicted in his name, here again is our annual rendition of the facts.
There are five aspects of the King career: his Communism, his violence, his plagiarism, the fact that he was a sexual predator who made Bildo Clinton, the Arkansas rapist, look like a cloistered monk; and the fact that he did not believe in Christianity. We shall look at each, but first letís consider the holiday itself. Where should such a holiday come from?
Complete Story http://www.jesus-is-savior.com/Wolves/mlk_jr-exposed.htm
Martin Luther King Jr.’s real birth name was Michael King Jr. Although his father later decided to rename Michael to “Martin Luther” King Jr. (after martin Luther the reformer), there was never any legal name change. Michael King Jr. was born and died as Michael King Jr.
1. Martin Luther King Jr. was NO Christian. King propagated a social Gospel of ecumenism (which is still strongly followed today by African Americans), but King certainly did NOT preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
2. Martin Luther King Jr. was NO Baptist Preacher. Many of King’s doctrines were way out in left field. He denied the bodily resurrection of Christ and believed that spirituality could be gained through “religious experience” as he termed it.
3. The “social justice” which Christianity Today praises was nothing less than a continued Communist conspiracy to destabilize America. This “social justice” has spawned feminism, homosexuality, gay-marriage, abortion, and a host of other evils in America. Freedom without moral restraint is no freedom at all and can only lead to certain bondage. The social justice which King propagated was not just a fight for equality amongst African Americans, but was largely a campaign to morally bankrupt America. Communism found a willing servant in Martin Luther King Jr. Today, America is largely Communist. Unbeknownst to most Americans, Karl Marx’s 10 planks of the Communist Manifesto have been fulfilled already in America. For example, the 10th plank called for the creation of a public school system. The 5th plank called for a central bank. Communism’s ultimate goal is the total destruction of America’s sovereignty, economy, land ownership rights, Bill of Rights, U.S. Constitution, and Christianity.

Okay, so I can take back the first good remark about a dumocrat I’ve made in about 22 years. I was lied to by the Detroit Free Press, or News. I forget which one.
On a side note, a friend of mine, who married a great black friend of mine from work had a bit of somewhat unknown info. During a visit with his new in-laws, her parents told him that it wasn’t very publicized but that the whole bus trip was set up. She was chosen because of her appearence, clean criminal record, and timing. The other people on the bus were all in on the operation so when she did her thing they’d have her back. He told me this just with the two of us present and I told him, as I looked him in the eye deciding he was serious, that I’d never heard that before. If I’d heard it from any other white guy I’d dismiss it as some conspiracy b.s. designed to defame Parks, but I had to admit it made sense and he REALLY didn’t have a reason to make that up. Her actions still had an effect but she wasn’t exactly taking her LIFE in her hands by doing her thing. Anyone hear what ever happened with the white guy that wanted her seat? I’ve never heard a thing.

Johnny V,
While you’re at it, please send us your investigation of Noah, who gets all this credit for building an ark, yet was a drunkard who cursed his own sons! And please do an expose on King David, the one who was called “a man after God’s own heart”, yet he was a murderer and an adulterer? And I can’t wait to see what you have to say about the emanicipator himself, Moses, who was a murderer and a fugitive on the run from Egyptian authorities. Where is your hit job on this alleged righteous man called Lot, who was willing to give his own daughters to a crowd of men to be raped? And I can’t wait to read your report on those pesky Israelites, whom God called His “chosen People”, yet all through the Old Testament they engaged in what today would be called genocide and war crimes against the indigenous people already occupying the “promised land”. Where is your expose on Jacob, later blessed to be called Israel, who was a trickster and a scoundrel? And what about our man Peter, the roughneck fisherman whom in one instance Jesus called out as Satan and then went on to deny Christ three times? Yet he has been called “the rock” upon which the Christian church was built. Has this Alan Stang guy investigated him?
Where is your expose on Jesus the Christ himself? Didn’t he say “The first shall be last and the last shall be first”? Didn’t He say, “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get to Heaven”? Didn’t He tell a rich young ruler to sell all he had and give the proceeds to the poor (surely a radical redistribution of wealth!!!)? Didn’t He tell a parable in which all the laborers in the field were to get the same pay, regardless of what time they showed up for work? Wow. According to what your worldview, surely this man must have been some sort of radical communist agent of Karl Marx!!!
My point is this. Dr. Martin Luther King was a very flawed man (and I believe his flaws may be at the root of the King family troubles today. “The sins of the father….”) and anyone can be made to look very bad if someone wants to do a smear job on them (and I’m still amazed by these folks who vigorously attack MLK and claim communist conspiracy, but say nothing at all about the absolutely dreadful and unconstitutional treatment of certain Americans that led to the Civil Rights movement). But all throughout history, God has used very flawed men (and women) to do great things and I believe MLK Jr. was no exception. As for what his family is doing now…that’s another issue entirely! Oh well, King David has some crazy-ass kids too!

If I would ever become famous as a national icon and made millions from speeches and appearances, I would stipulate in my last will and testament that none of my surviving relatives and their descendants, lawyers, or trusted associates should ever use my image, my speeches, my writings, works, charities, and whatever for profiteering and shall not have any right/license to my likeness or my works in order to make money.

Bobby's Brain on April 22, 2009 at 1:02 pm

Alan Stangs article on MLK is one of the finest exposes of the fraud known as MLK. I still today cannot believe people fall for the phony BS that is circulated about MLK being some kind of saint and one of the posters here even tries to equate him wuth Jesus Christ.(JibberJabber)
The whole myth surrounding this communist sexual predator is unbelievable. They are still naming things with his name and it is an utter disgrace.
When the seals are removed from his papers in 2027 maybe they will revoke his Holiday and remove his statue too.To not do so is to continue to honor a scumbag that deserves no accolades.

ScottyDog on April 22, 2009 at 4:27 pm

I’d heard for a long time he had numerous white mistresses that his wife ignored for the cause.
I still don’t believe the government did anything to get rid of him but monitor him. Jesse Jackson however…

samurai on April 22, 2009 at 5:32 pm

ScottyDog, your post just proved my point. Some folks love to enthusiastically vilify MLK Jr. but don’t say a damn thing about the horrid conditions (especially in the South) that led to the rise of an MLK Jr. Hmmmm…I wonder why? Then as I began to examine the most vehement of MLK Jr. haters on the Web, I saw why. I noticed they all seem to have ties to some of the more “extremist” sites on the Internet (neo-Nazi and neo-Confederate sites, WAR, Stormfront, White supremacist sites). Hell, our favorite Nazis at Stormfront even have their own MLK Jr. site, and this Alan Stang’s writings are prominently featured on David Duke?s Website and Stormfront…interesting. Notice how the same folks who hate MLK Jr. tend to hate Black folks as a whole? And isn’t it funny that these sites claiming MLK Jr. was a communist seem to have no problem with National Socialism based on racial supremacy…in other words, Nazism. Hey, let’s not live under Stalinist regime, let’s live under Hitlerism! Wow…what a choice. Satanic murderers all. So ScottyDog, when these “amateur Internet historians” on certain sites hate my guts based on the color of my skin, please excuse me if I’m suspicious of anything they have to write or say about MLK Jr. or any another Black person. That’s like me looking for objective information on Hugh Hephner on a radical feminist site…it ain’t happening.
And yes, the FBI has tapes that document King’s illicit affairs. But given what we know now about the sexual deviancy of J. Edgar Hoover, I’m sure he labeled MLK Jr. a sexual predator because King actually slept with women instead of dressing like them…

JibberJabber on April 22, 2009 at 7:44 pm

I think this is a great example of “poetic justice.” What more fitting tribute to MLK’s legacy than this–the MLK family–cha-ching–cashing in off idiots who would pay for this! What hogwash!
Look at Jesse Jackson and others who self-proclaim themselves to be the heirs to the MLK legacy–don’t they all use the formula of… charge racism (whether legit or not) + claiming the MLK legacy–> to extort money from victims wherever they trod?
Oh, and they have their love-childs along the way too–in keeping with the tradition. As observed by other posters, for all MLK’s great leadership and oratory skill, MLK had some serious flaws which now generations later are rotting out the legacy like maggots infesting a rotting corpse.
