VIDEO: Apple Stores Won’t Sell to Iran or Iranians (Steve Jobs Lives!)

By Debbie Schlussel

While many Iranian Americans are assimilated and harmless and secular, many are not (check out the pro-Khomeini/Hezbollah Iranian Shi’ites all over Dearbornistan and Dearbornistan Heights). And even some who are secular have cultural loyalties and frequently go “back home.” And so you have to admire that Apple–unlike other computer hardware and software companies–is really taking the Iranian embargo seriously. Contrast that with the whore Carly Fiorina, who got around these laws as the failed head of HP by forming non-American subsidiaries to sell to Iran. Steve Jobs may be gone, but his principles live on. Don’t forget that he was smart enough to disavow any Muslim and Arab heritage of the sperm donor who abandoned him. And–as reader Gerald pointed out–that Jobs refused to sell porn apps. Now, there’s this, which is how EVERY American company should operate in putting the country’s best interests and the laws ahead of the might dollar:

The thing is, there are many supporters of Iran who are not Iranian, don’t speak Farsi, and don’t have Iranian surnames. They are Lebanese Shi’ites who speak Arabic, etc. And there are many Jews and Zoroastrians who are of Iranian descent living in America, who have Iranian surnames and speak Farsi. And yet they don’t comprise any threat of taking their iPads to Iran. So, perhaps the law and the way it’s enforced should be changed. Still, I applaud Apple for taking it seriously.

More details here.

So, how long until the lawyers and the lawsuits get going? 3-2-1 . . . . The Farsi litigation jihad troops are gettin’ ready. Cha-ching.

Three cheers for Apple for being a good American corporate citizen. Steve Jobs would be proud.

Debbie,
These are American citizens who were denied the purchase because of a misinterpretation of the law. At which time did they state they would send these ipads to Iran? Very sad and Steve Jobs would not have approved.

chuck on June 19, 2012 at 4:58 pm

As someone who deals with import/export laws, Apple is right. They can get into trouble from the Department of Commerce for selling goods which likely to be exported. If an employee has a reason to suspect an item may be exported, they are legally obligated to refuse the sale.

Fred Taub on June 19, 2012 at 5:04 pm

I can speak well of Apple.

My Mac Mini got screwed up and they re-installed the operating system at no charge!

And whatever I needed, they shipped me on time.

Apple makes good products and stands behind them.

NormanF on June 19, 2012 at 5:13 pm

Good for Apple. It is refreshing to find a company that does not try to skirt the law regarding exports to Iran. General Electric had to be body slammed repeatedly before giving up its trade with Iran.

    Worry01 on June 19, 2012 at 5:34 pm

I agree Norman about the quality of Apple products, and this is good news, Debbie. (And I could use some good news for a change; couldn’t we all?)

I recently purchased my first smartphone, and got a top-of-the-line 4S from Apple. It truly is smart. I can press and hold a button and a microphone pops up. I can then ask Siri (the name of the smartphone) a question, and it usually understands what I’m asking and replies in writing with the answer. Who was the vice-president under Andrew Jackson? No problem, up pops the answer. What is the 3 divided by 119 to the 7th power? No problem, Siri answers correctly.

I then asked, “What is the capital of Jerusalem?”

I have to tell you that I was expecting some phony “politically-correct” type of response, but no, I am happy to tell you that up popped the answer: “Jerusalem, Israel.” Israel!

I responded back to Siri, “You’re pretty smart, Siri.”

Siri just said, “Thanks for saying so.”

    Smart, very smart.

I am an Iranian who has many many apple products and I live in US. I am one of the 1% top paid people in US and I live on Visa! I have many Iranian friends who work in Apple, guess what Apple give them free mac to work with. It is just an idiot racist person like you who refuses to sell items to an AMERICAN citizen!

Mary on June 19, 2012 at 7:31 pm

Mary isn’t a very Islamic name.

The real question, Mary, is why you are working at all in the USA on a Visa given that the US is at war with Iran. Naturally, you should never be allowed to become a US citizen.

We just can’t escape what must be our goal: no Muslims in the US, then no Muslims in the world.

    Imagine a world without Islam!

skzion on June 19, 2012 at 8:13 pm

Ether you’re a troll account or you’re just that stupid.

There was no racism involved here, so shut up. Ether deal with it or get the f*** out of America.

(And this is coming from a black man. Yeah, what you got to say about that??)

What? Mary are you serious or are pulling our legs. Mary, Debbie Schlussel does NOT work for Apple, if you want to fire you’re ammo, fire you’re ammo at the folks who at Apple Company, NOT DS, she’s only the messenger who’s giving out proven facts stories on what’s going on both in this country and across the world, etc.

Got my first Macbook in 2007 and never looked back. Great product. Reading the Steve Jobs book at this time as well. Good book. Kind of large but the man had a heck of a life. Good article.

samurai on June 19, 2012 at 8:56 pm

I export goods and also can not EXPORT goods to Iran or Cuba but its a sad state when we are refusing to sell goods to AMERICAN CITIZENS who happen to hail from those countries. We say we want migrants to assimilate and this girl seems to be but is treated this way? Sad, and Sean DS may not work for apple but she is applauding this, I wonder if apple stores in Miami are refusing to sell to anyone they suspect are from Cuba

Tim on June 19, 2012 at 9:15 pm

Timmy, I would be happy to enforce a ban against any country that is a genuine threat to the United States. Do you support the Iranian regime? Also, do you really place Cuba in the same threat league as Iran? Come now Timmy, or is it Khalid? lol

Worry on June 19, 2012 at 10:04 pm

There is a ban against selling to those country’s NOT to american citizens who happen to be natives of that country, if it is law it should be enforced with both country’s. Yeah i point something out and you assume a khalid? grow up

Tim on June 19, 2012 at 10:16 pm

What part of the story did the young lady said she was going to take the product to Iran? This is stupid policy. I could be Iranian man trying to buy Apple products then and take them back to Iran. All I need to do is speak ENGLISH or just ask someone to buy the product!!! There is no way to police the policy. Steve Job would say “ Idiots”

Simpson on June 19, 2012 at 10:35 pm

You do what you can, Simpson. I remember all the scrap iron we sold to the Japanese, just to have it shot back at us during WW2.

    Joel-Confederate Son on June 20, 2012 at 12:05 pm

Mary is probably Maryam, a very popular Iranian name.

Karen on June 19, 2012 at 11:20 pm

You are correct. Also, using the name Tim is a rather unimaginitive mask as well. My favorite one is Simpson with his very poor English syntax. It amazes me that so many of these characters do not realize that I.P. addresses can be traced by the authorities. If someone is doing illicit things, it is pretty foolish to whine openly about the inconvenience. Islam is indeed the religion of squeals and whines.

That last sentence was magnificent, Worry,

skzion on June 20, 2012 at 1:22 am

Worry, where here in the world in my post do you think i am whining about inconvenience to me? i am well aware that they can trace an ip address and I’m pretty sure stating an opinion is not illicit activity. Go ahead think of me as khalid all you want. I admit using my real first name wasn’t very imaginative though

Tim on June 20, 2012 at 7:13 am

Gee Timmy, are you looking at the responses I give to others? Was a nerve struck, or did just a bit of restless eyeball syndrome happen to you? For such a secure guy, you are quite excitable.

        Worry01 on June 20, 2012 at 7:08 pm

We are not at war with Iran. Congress hasn’t said so. We do have a blockade around Iran and cannot do business with people in Iran. I can’t imagine that would affect any individual living or going to school in America.

I will bet you that the young lady could get approval by asking as flooding Iran with satellite receivers and Internet capable devices is probably high on the Dept. of Commerce’s list of desirable activities. In fact they might even buy it for her…

The problem with Iran is the Religion, not the people.

dave on June 20, 2012 at 2:17 am

Well, I don’t recall the Cold War being declared by congress. And I guess we weren’t at war with Libya either.

Leaving all that aside, Iran is definitely at war with us, so we are at war with it.

I really wish I could edit my reply. Of course there are people in Iran who are “The Problem.” I didn’t mean that all Persians are friendly. But we have the same problem here.

Put me in a room with “Rev. Wright,” “Jesse Jackson,” “Al Sharpton,” “Louis Farrakhan, http://bit.ly/M2AMts” or “David Duke” and I would be one unhappy camper. And I feel that way about most Politicians.

dave on June 20, 2012 at 2:29 am

Evan, why would you say something like that? You don’t know me.

dave on June 20, 2012 at 2:32 am

In my city, near the place where I once worked, I noticed that there is a Persian Christian Church. I tend to be more trusting of Iranians who’ve jettisoned Christianity for Judaism or Zoroastrianism than of those who’ve remained Muslim.

If we were mindful that the threat to us was Islamic, the law would have been changed to recognize that. For instance, Iranian Zoroastrians, Jews and Christians are not a threat to America or Israel. Pakistani Christians or Sikhs or Hindus are not a threat to America or India. However, this gets more fuzzy in the case of Arab Christians, but aside from them, most non-Muslims in Muslim countries aren’t Jihadi time bombs waiting to explode.

I do wish Apple would slowly start moving more of their manufacturing back to the US, and get more aggressive about their PC/laptop business, since Microsoft is dropping the ball w/ that boondoggle called Windows 8.

But yeah, I’m becoming more of an Apple fan these days.

Infidel on June 20, 2012 at 2:55 am

    Dear Infidel,

    I can’t stand this ignorance.
I’m not taking the sides of Muslims as I wish that damned religion would have never come to Iranians. But, how can you say Iranians who are Muslim are a threat? Islam doesn’t hate America, and neither do the Iranian people. It’s those few who follow the Iranian regime. Like I said before, more than 95% of Iranians want this regime gone. Iranians are very peaceful people. Look at our history. Have you heard of Cyrus the Great?
Please do some research before you just generalize things.
I’m sick and tired of the disease that is ignorance.

Ace on June 20, 2012 at 11:47 am

Oops, I meant to say I’m more trusting of Iranians who’ve jettisoned Islam for either Zoroastrianism, Judaism or Christianity.

    Joel-Confederate Son on June 20, 2012 at 12:25 pm

There’s a big difference between selling to Iran or to people you suspect will trans-ship your goods to Iran, and selling to people who just happen to be from Iran. There are tens of thousands who fled Iran after the Islamic Revolution in 1979 who settled in the US, including many Jews. The former mayor of Beverly Hills is a Persian Jew. Should they too be denied access to Apple products? I say no. (Full disclosure: I’m a (very minor) Apple stockholder.)

It’s good that Siri knows that Jerusalem is in Israel. Neither Google nor the State Department seem to know that. Since Jobs’ untimely death Apple seems, if anything, to be growing closer to Israel. Apple recently made a major investment there, buying flash RAM company Anobit. Their people are all Apple employees now, and the core of Apple’s first overseas development facility. But Israel still doesn’t have an Apple Store. Their products are imported exclusively by iDigital which (surprise!) is owned by Shimon Peres’ son.

Raymond in DC on June 20, 2012 at 7:27 am

Hey Suzan,

There are many of us in Canada who would welcome Debbie and her message. Unfortunately we also have stupid people like you and Luka M. who think it’s okay to behead people.

Jack on June 20, 2012 at 10:44 am

This is ridiculous. How do you people applaud apple for this act of prejudice and racism?
It’s in the constitution that people are free to speak any tongue they want. Just because they were speaking Farsi does not mean they wanted to illegally export sanctioned goods to a sanctioned country. By this assumption since many people speak Spanish here, one can only assume that they might be wanting to somehow export goods from the US to countries such as Cuba or Venezuela, so they should be refused sale of all sanctioned goods!
This is ridiculous!
You guys should be ashamed.
This is a text book example of American ignorance.
If you guys actually do some research you’d find that the majority of the Iranian people (I’m talking 95% +) do not approve of the Islamic government over ruling them, (hence why they protested a 3 years back but unfortunately got shut down).
Why do you think there is so many Iranians in America? They immigrated here to get away from that government. Sure, some go back and forth once in a while to visit their family who may still be there.
These sanctions are supposed to hurt the government not the people!
There are many extremely successful Iranian-Americans who contribute greatly to this country and you guys should be proud to have them around.
In hopes of less discrimination around the world,
Peace….

P.S.

Ace, I agree with you in you’re statement that a good majority of the folks in Iran are anti-Ahmadinejad, dude, none of us, including Debbie did NOT say that Iranians/Persians like yourself are terrorists and support the regime in Iran. And the samething can be said for a good number of arabic people, many of them don’t support hamas, hezbollah, Muslim Brotherhood, etc. (I’m talking about a good number of non-muslim arabs, and yes a few non-muslim arabs support islamic jihadism). As I’ve said to another poster last night dude, if you want to be pissed off, be pissed off at Apple Company and not at Ms. Schlussel or any of us here, last I checked I’m not on the Apple Company payroll and neither is Debbie herself. And yes, there are some Persians/Iranians in this country who have done some good contributions to our society, I’m not disagreeing with you on that buddy. So just chill out, relax and UNDERSTAND where we are coming from with our views!

W/ all due respect – or not – that’s a load of hogwash. Islam is very much anti-US – in fact, it’s anti everything that’s not Islam. Iranians who are not Muslims are not anti-Americans. But Iranians who are Muslims are anti-Americans.

Cyrus the Great was not a Muslim – he was the ruler of the Median empire that embraced the religion of Zoroaster. Don’t conflate him w/ the Muslim savages who populate Iran today.

If the bulk of Iranians were to throw off Islam and become Zoroastrians, which was their original religion, I’d believe you. But anybody who remains Muslim is not to be trusted, and is an enemy. As it is, the last time Iranians tried having their ‘Green Revolution’, as Debbie pointed out here, they were actually split b/w one group of Mullahs and another, not b/w Islam and apostasy. Also, Pew polls have indicated a high degree of support among Iranians for both Hamas and Hizbullah.

Go to someone else w/ that lovely bridge b/w San Francisco & Marin County that you’re trying to sell. We’re not buying!

Infidel on June 20, 2012 at 2:17 pm

The problem here for Apple is that the laws are somewhat vague… If an Apple employee suspects that there is a chance the hardware may be exported to Iran then they are required to deny the purchase…

This is due to the fact that the prohibited nations (Iran, Cuba, North Korea etc) are not above sending people to purchase the items they want to Apple Stores…

BUT, this is unfair towards Apple because how do you define that there is a chance that the hardware will be illegally exported?!… Are Apple employees supposed to be clairvoyant?!…

Apple, most likely, instructed its personnel not to sell to any Farsi speaking customer just in order to be on the “safe side” of the law… It’s a bit of a broad comb but I can see Apple’s side of things… They don’t want to be hit with multimillion fines by the government…

The part that really pisses me off is that I have seen actual Iranian tourists purchase Apple products in Hong Kong and China… The US government should have another look at these laws!…

Hans on June 20, 2012 at 3:16 pm

I agree and disagree on this matter. Yes, if the people speaking Farsi are American citizens were denied the purchases of Apple products, then that was wrong. However, seems Apple is the few companies trying not to skirt the import ban on certain countries like Iran. Unfortunately many US companies in the interest to make a dollar will sell highly sensitive material to many countries even vehement anti American ones.

Mario on June 20, 2012 at 3:50 pm

Hans brings up an interesting point, you now have high school graduate geeks, who are not known for people skills, making legal decisions based on a CYA corporate guideline.
BTW, I love Apple, won’t buy anything else and have been in their stores before coming to Israel. We have one reseller here. I don’t know if they check i.d.’s to see if the person lives in Ramallah and might send the product to Iran but aside from buying online in the US, it’s so easy to get around the issue outside your borders. Look at this list and ask, So, is it impossible for Iran to get iAnything?? http://www.apple.com/choose-your-country/

Italkit on June 21, 2012 at 10:10 am

This is outrageous. Do you realize you are supporting racism and prejudice? Against both Muslims and Iranians. There is no reason for you or anyone else to assume that people of Iranian decent or of an Islamic faith are anti American. This is just plain discrimination. If the U.S. government wants to enforce its policy against Iran that’s fine. They can enforce that through the airport and travel laws. But no one, of any decent should ever be denied sale of anything. This is how discrimination begins to be justified. I honestly wonder how many of you, who’ve decided to to come out here and state your opinions, have a college degree. If you don’t understand something well enough, then please keep your opinions to your selves.
