Much as Obama didn’t want to do anything, he ran the risk of having his presidency defined like Carter did, re his inability to stand up to the Iranians. He chose what to him was the ‘lesser of two evils’.
Also, the NYT coverage was particularly shameful. They ran a big article Friday about why the pirates weren’t terrorists, and later on in the article discussed that the captain was probably joking around with the pirates making them laugh. Incredibly they kept this on their web site even after the captain risked his life attempting to escape.

I disagree. The French have been going after these pirates for a long time and yet they still go after French boats.
What needs to be done to perhaps deter this sort of thing is to hold the one guy that was captured just inches over the water in full view of the others and let the sharks slowly go after him. I believe the Russians and French just captured some other jihadist Pirates. This should be done to all of them.
I know this will work because in the 1980s when Russians and Americans were being kidnapped in Lebanon the Russians did something similar to Hezbullah cretins they captured. The Americans did not. After a while only Americans were being kidnapped.

And sure enough I called! Islamic terrorists! Nevermind the fact that no intelligence service has linked the pirates to any terrorist netowrk and that no pirate crew has made an ideological demand…
These are criminals. If you see them solely through the lens of being “Muslim terrorists” you’re never going to be able to solve the problem of piracy because you’re always going to misinterpret its causes. This is greed, not religious fanaticism.
c f: The US did the smart thing. It looked or the least dangerous way to resolve the situation rather than reacting in a hasty and half assed way, but when it was clear the situation was going to escalate the SEALs acting quickly and effectively. It’s hardly a bad thing.

And I’m not even sure how you concluded that killing a handful of poor blacks (without being read their rights or given a fair trial) is a success?? What about the pirates’ families? Who I’m sure also live in squalor due to the Imperialist US. It is all our fault that they are uneducated w/ no job opportunities and probably hungry too thanks to the white man raping their people & pillaging their land. After listening to the pathetic reporters at the news conference yesterday, their questions about the Seals’ actions and the killing of the ‘pirates of Penzance’ sounded like a typical liberal news media attempt to somehow ‘defend’ the poor pirate, look to blame our great warriors for misjudgement. Example, ‘ Why did the Navy feel the Captain’s life was in danger?’ Answer: He had an AK-47 aimed at his head. Duh! Now the great Messiah Obama is being credited for taking out the ‘pirates’… those magical, sea-faring gold-seekers. The best answer for the ‘ Where are you taking the 4th pirate who gave himself up’ question…. HE’S GOING TO DISNEYWORLD! Are you saying that the US Navy does not have all of their technologies, including satellites, at their disposal to locate one ship in a large area, not to mention relying on word-of-mouth, reconnaissance, and hi-tech communications and surveillance skills? The fact you SAID it about the US Navy is stretching credibility.

In fact I think that these wastes of humanity the press calls “Pirates” would have never dared gone after a U.S. flagged vessel while Bush was in office. They are testing America’s resolve the way a toddler pushes their parents to see just how much they can get away with.

Considering the value of the cargo of even the poorest of these merchant vessels one would think they could afford to carry sufficient trained armed personnel to repel these pirate attacks.
In particular, the land of guns, the USA, should have the wherewithal and know how to to protect its own merchant men and women.

Back when George Bush was President, whenever our military won a battle against Arab terrorists (That’s what these Somali Pirates are.) the bad-guys would say: “Now you’ve made us REALLY mad!”

Being a pirate in the 21st century is in fact pretty darn good indication of being a Muslim.

Shipping companies mandate unarmed crews to reduce insurance costs. Hopefully these policies will change in the near future.
We need a repeat of the Barbary Pirate wars. The mother ships should be sunk, and on-shore support networks should be neutralized.

DS: It’s not a distinction without difference. The motivating factors are entirely different an conflating one with the other only shows ignorance while interfering with a serious solution to the problem. I will spell out real simple for y’all:
The pirates. Want. Money. That’s it. They will attack whoever has the money. That includes Western targets, but also targets from Arab and Muslim nations (the biggest grab they’ve had so far was a Saudi tanker).
Terrorists, like those who attacked the US on 9/11 and continue to target US soldiers and civilians in Iraw and Afghanistan, are driven by ideological motives. They want a Western withdrawal from what they consider to be Muslim territory.
That difference in motivating factors and tactics means that the what works as a solution for one is not necessarily a good solution for the other (notably pirates will likely be more susceptible to cost/benefit calculations as well as the general establishment of rule of law while while terrorists won’t be).
There are some common solutions, to wit clamping down on the illegal arms trade, but the overall tactics aren’t going to be the same. To try one last time for simplicity… if you treat a flu patient like someone who has food poisoning you’re not going to be giving the most effective treatment, even if the symptoms look similar.
Actually, I agree with Tim Jansing. We’re going to need an anti-piracy campaign with a strong land based component. Unfortunately that means the army’s going to have to be ready for another round of my being spread thin even as a draw down happens in Iraq.

Can you imagine what the media would be saying if GWB had sent the U.S. Navy after some poor helpless foreign citizens who were just out to provide for their families in the only way left to them, thanks to U.S. imperialism. Like the poor prisoners in gitmo, these “pirates” are not enemy combatants, they are common criminals and deserved to be tried in the courts of the U.S., not executed by the commander in chief of the U.S. Military. Where is the outrage???
