Many of Debbie’s fans write that these comments prove that Poles are anti-semitic. But look through them… How many of them are really xenophobic? Not so much… Schlussel’s post also shows only these facebook comments, which are anti-semitic… but they’re small part of total. Most of them says about ignorance and insolence of Debbie Schlussel.

I’m still waiting to see one Polish comment that acknowledges the Polish role in helping to kill Jews, and/or acknowledges the Polish role in hundreds of years of discrimination against Jews.

sorry for my English which is not my native. These 300 entries is a sample of society, is only a small portion of people who have heard the lies propagated by Debbie, people who react emotionally. The rest of the Polish nation had never heard of Ms. Schlussel and will never hear about she.
Writing such letters here on FB or Twitter I think is a big mistake. This increases the fame of this lady, who we know is the margin in her country (only seven thousand “Like” on FB among 300 mln Nation).
Polish state should force Ms. Schlussel in front of court. There, she should prove the lie about the murder of 3 million Jews by the Poles.
It makes no sense to recall here how the Americans treated the Africans, Indians, slavery, rapes, murders, violences, and the scale of this behaviours. You can not compare it to behaviour of the Poles in relation to its citizens such as Jews are from 700 years. Among every nation we can find bad people, among Polish as well.
Incidental cases of which you speak has occurred. Their number does not differ much from such incidents in other countries.
The same was true with the Jews, its citizens themselves in the Warsaw ghetto, send people to die by sold them to Germans, it’s true. I can’t do to convince you to change your mind if could not do it an History, a teachers, a books. But trust me, I know story of my family and Nations, not from books nor propaganda.

I’m from Poland and I have to say that I’ve never really tried to defend my nation in these silly, hating games. I’ve always thought: “Everybody has a right to say whatever he/she thinks”.
I agree, there were Poles who worked at camps, there were Poles who took a part in killing Jews. As much as I, young Pole and a lot of my friends, would like to change that fact, history will remain the same. We can only learn from our ancestors’ mistakes.
But in Junior High I was taught really important thing: there is no such a thing as only good nation or only bad nation. There were Poles who killed Jews but there were also Poles who saved them, often sacrificing their own lives. War is something that drags out from people the most horrible as also the noblest things. Poles were no exception.
I admit – there are Poles that are just silly or full of hate to everybody and they will send to you these images. Maybe it is caused by our complicated history or maybe they are just like that. But the truth is – they are only a minority in whole society.
I don’t really know you and I have a feeling we wouldn’t like each other if we ever met but I understand that you have some kind of grudge after your family was killed here, in Poland. I can only say: I’m sorry for your lose. But does that change anything? I will never see you apologizing me for accusing me being anti-Jew simple from the fact that I’m a Pole, will I?
But I have to congratulate you for being so good at manipulating. I can’t really believe that pictures you posted here were the only messages you got. You picked only those which suited your vision of Poles. Well, I’ve browsed all 359 comments (to date), and I’m not impressed by anyone on any side.

The key issue is whether Poland and by extension the Polish people are being condemned for complicity in the Holocaust.

One has to be very careful about the language one uses; for if the real situation was a small minority of Poles complicit in the German Holocaust, and add to that the violent intimidation and extortion imposed by the conquering Germans upon the Poles, then add to that further the fact that many Poles helped Jews and fought against the Germans for the Allies — then we may not have a situation where blaming Poland and by extension the Polish people is not only incorrect but grievously wrong.

A more precise calculus has to be established, based upon numbers and types of Poles who did help the Germans; juxtaposed to the numbers and types of Poles who did NOT help the Germans and who risked their lives to resist. And this more precise calculus has to be based on reliable historiographical studies, not pulled out of thin air as nearly every post here, on both sides, reflect.

I notice, for example, that a defender of Debbie’s, someone named “Miranda” above, was asked repeatedly what she meant by the glibly promiscuous term “many Poles” — and she never answered the question. That seems telling; for that is the CRUCIAL question.

Anti-Semitism was rampant in Poland, as well as in other Eastern European countries, well before the Nazi invasion. My parents lived in Poland, and my father’s relatives unfortunately did not meet any Poles willing to risk their lives for them. Thus his parents, brothers and nieces died in the Holocaust.

My parents told me a lot about their lives in Poland, and it was not idyllic. My father was hit in the face walking on the street because he looked Jewish, and, after the war, when my parents returned from their self-imposed exile in the Soviet Union, their property had been confiscated.

I spoke Polish when I was very young, but my parents did not allow me to speak the language after we left Poland. Although I have forgotten the language, I remember the stories. I have since met many Poles, and my family has Polish friends and German friends. But somehow I cannot bring myself to visit either country. Maybe it will take another generation.

I’m not sure if Debbie has been to Poland, that is not relevant to the discussion. But I can tell you -I- have been to Poland, and have observed with my own eyes what is going on. There is some serious hate going on.

I have also heard accounts of visiting students from Israel who went to Poland on trips to visit the concentration camps and the way they were treated.

Where there is smoke, there is fire.

Stop trying to cover up what happened to the Jews at the hands of the Polish people. Do you identify yourself more as a Pole, or as a human being? If you identified yourself as a human being first, your nationalism would not interfere with THE TRUTH. No one is saying all Polish people are bad. From reading all these comments, you guys better clean up your act. Attacking Debbie is the lamest thing you can do.

If you identify yourself as a Christian or Jew then you would sympathize with the truth, not attack it. Shame on all who deny the truth, your time is coming.

Gross estimates that approximately 250,000 Polish Jews returned home at the end of the war. In his chapter “The Unwelcoming of Jewish Survivors,” Gross describes how returning Polish Jews were subjected to a wave of violence and hostility, with up to 1500 murdered either individually or in pogroms.[1] Often they would find their property occupied by non-Jewish Poles or taken over by the communist government, which nationalized much of the Polish economy. According to Gross, the expropriation of Jewish property continued a trend that occurred throughout the war years, with non-Jewish Poles acquiring the property of Polish Jews who were sent off to extermination camps, and in some instances, carrying out the killings themselves. According to a Piast Institute’s online summary,[2] Gross concludes by writing that some Poles, especially in rural areas, participated in the Nazi wartime effort to annihilate and despoil the Jews, and this was the cause of postwar anti-Semitism in Poland. The fear of punishment for their own crimes, according to Gross, was what drove them to continue attacking Jews after the war.[4][5] Historian David Engel describes the following quote as a “summation of [Gross’] basic thesis:”

We must seek the reasons for the novel, virulent quality of postwar anti-Semitism in Poland not in collective hallucinations nor in prewar attitudes, but in actual experiences acquired during the war years…. Living Jews embodied the massive failure of character and reason on the part of their Polish neighbors and constituted by mere presence both a reminder and a threat that they might need to account for themselves.[6]

1. Among the claims that Ms. Schlussel made are:
– Poles murdered millions of Jews
– Camps located in Poland were “Polish” and Poles run them

This is evidenced by those quotes:
“Poles murdered millions of Jews, they maintained several death camps, and they wiped out almost all of both sides of my family, as well as those in hundreds of thousands of other Jewish families.”
“Just taking orders when they helped round up Jews and helped man gas chambers.”
“Polish police all too easily took their place in helping run and operate the death camps.”

2. Those are specific accusations and Poles want Ms. Schlussel to answer for THEM. Don’t write about some Poles killing Jews, pogroms, Jedwabne and szmalcowniki…We know about those, but what we want here is Ms. Schlussel substantiating her claims that Poles killed MILLIONS of Jews and that they MAINTAINED/RUN/MANNED/OPERATED concentration camps (and I’m talking about voluntary cooperation, which is implied by Ms. Schlussel, not about occasional kapos who were recruited among prisoners, including Jews).

3. Ms. Schlussel is visibly unable to offer any proofs for those claims. In fact, they are wild, erroneous and historically inaccurate. They are serious accusations and they are LIES. Ms. Schlussel doesn’t try to discuss the facts and ignores the many Holocaust historians and Jewish and Israeli officials who have spoken against the phrase “Polish camps”.

4. The fact that we are protesting here, doesn’t mean that we are unwilling to discuss Polish anti-Semitism. I, for one, read both Gross’ books – Neighbours and Fear (about Jedwabne and Kielce massacres), many other Holocaust-related books and I can’t stand Polish anti-Semitism. I’m also pro-Israeli and pro-American. However, even Poles like me are incensed by Schlussel’s gratuitous attack. In tone, content and style of “arguments”, Schlussel’s first post is akin to anti-Israeli propaganda on some Islamic websites. And this includes the imagery. Equating the Polish national symbol to the Nazi flag is as obscene, and stirs the same emotions among Poles as equating the Israeli flag to svastika would stir among Jews.

So back to the crux of the issue, what does Ms. Schlussel (and her supporters) have to say about her claims that Poles killed millions of Jews and operated concentration camps?

A country bears the burden of what happens WITHIN its borders. Sorry, I’m not going to just IGNORE that 3 millions Jews were MURDERED in Poland. You have to have a VERY large level of complicity for 3 MILLION people of a particular religion to be murdered in a country. Again, I think it’s unbelievable that 3 million Jews were murdered in Poland, and all these posts can focus on are stupid side-issues.

Many of your families, your neighbors, your friends live in homes stolen from Jews in the Holocaust, and live off wealth stolen from them! Only two-thousand Jews now live in Poland. Gee, I wonder why?

There’s no excuse for antisemitism, and the amount of it I have seen on here is ridiculous and shameful. Shame on Poland for having such a corrupted attitude. I have not seen any other Poles apologize or acknowledge that the antisemitic comments and emails are wrong! What a poor reflection on a country and a culture!

Is there any reason that at the Poland football matches there are always so many Nazi flags being waved by the fans? One thing I know is, if someone tried to do that at an American game, they wouldn’t be doing it for very long, it would be stopped.

Face it, Poland has alot of work to do to mend fences, for the ones that are willing to do so.

I have traveled to Poland, met great people there, don’t get me wrong. In fact, my great grandmother is Polish, so to hate Polish people would be stupid. But the level of hate I am seeing is very stupid. If the reaction was normal that would be OK, but there is way too many antisemitic and tit-for-tat type comments from Poles on here and especially on Facebook.

Polish citizens have the world’s highest count of individuals awarded medals of Righteous among the Nations, given by the State of Israel to non-Jews who saved Jews from extermination during the Holocaust. As of 2011, there are 6,266 Polish men and women recognized as “Righteous” to this day, amounting to over 25 per cent of the total number of 22,765 honorary titles awarded already.

It is estimated by one study that hundreds of thousands of Poles concealed and aided hundreds of thousands of their Polish-Jewish neighbors.[4] Many of these initiatives were carried out by individuals, but there also existed organized networks of Polish resistance who was dedicated to aiding Jews—most notably, the ?egota organization.

In German-occupied Poland the task of rescuing Jews was especially difficult and dangerous. All household members were punished by death if a Jew was found concealed in their home or on their property. One study estimates of the number of Poles who were killed by the Nazis for aiding Jews, among them 704 posthumously honored with medals, as high as tens of thousands.

Altogether, in the town and its environs 415 Jews (including 60 children) were saved, in return for which the Germans killed 568 people of Polish nationality.” Several hundred Poles were massacred with their priest, Adam Sztark, in S?onim on December 18, 1942, for sheltering Jews in a church. In Huta Stara near Buczacz, Polish Christians and the Jewish countrymen they protected, were herded into a church by the Nazis and burned alive on March 4, 1944. In the years 1942-1944 about 200 peasants were shot dead and burned alive as punishment in the Kielce region alone.”
