Poles helped Jews, they risked their lifes. My grandma protected 2 jewish family, her husband and doughter (my grandfather and aunt) were killed by Germans because of that. And now she is blaming for anti-Semitism.

My grandma told me that polish families feared germanish mastery and some of them revealed that they helped Jewish people and convicted Jews to death at the same time. They did it for own safety and that was wrong, but it was MINORITY. Most of Poles helped Jaws so I don’t understand why do you write this false information.

We are proud of our history and it’s hurt when someone blame us wrongfully. Don’t be suprise that Poles write unpleasant things because you attack on our national consciousness.

Mrs. Schlussel, have you ever heard about Yad Vashem? Yad Vashem honors non-Jews who saved Jews during the Holocaust, at personal risk, as the “Righteous among the Nations”. Among of 22,000 people honored with the title of “Righteous among the Nations” 6,000 of them are POLISH. That’s almost 30%.

Mrs. Schlussel, have you ever heard about Irena Sendlerowa? Irena Sendlerowa smuggled 2,500 Jewish children out of the Warsaw Ghetto and then provided them with false identity documents and with housing outside the Ghetto, thereby saving those children from being killed in the Holocaust.

Mrs. Schlussel, I’m not saying that all of the Poles were good and rightful people, but majority of them was, even though in Eastern Europe death was the punishment for helping Jews, whereas in Western Europe the punisment for the same thing was imprisonment or some “silly” fine.

And here you come with your nonsense about the Polish people. To be honest I don’t care about what some old fucked up lady has to say, because we Poles know what really happened during the World War II. I’m only concerned about the fact that some ignorant people could think that what you’re saying is actually true.

All these emotions are unnecessary. Debbie caters to a certain audience and audience has expectations which Debbie satisfies. It’s a closed loop. Just like UFO “experts” and their fandom. It does not matter if she believes what she writes.

It’s easy to target Poles, because Poland had within its borders majority of Jews before WW2. But even according to ADL, Poland is not at the top of the list of anti-semitic attitudes in modern Europe. And this is just according to ADL surveys, where more reserved ethnicities simply will not tell how they really feel.

At the end of the day – Debbie put out a good provocations, got the response she needed, her crowd likes her more than before, her job is more secure.

I wish we could all just go about our daily lives and move on solving real problems instead of digging in old graves….

Hmmm, you know why my Jewish grandmother who was born in Poland refused to ever speak Polish when she moved to Canada in the 1920’s? It was because of the shitty way that the Poles treated her and other Polish Jews while she was growing up. She did not have fond memories of being a Jew in Poland where a good deal of her family were murdered in Auschwitz. And with all of the garbage that Poles have been sending to Debbie, I see things haven’t changed much.

@Karen, I am deeply sorry that no good person from Poland could help your family. But please, at least notice that some of the nation was trying to help Jew’s. And who was trying in Spain? France? Ukraine? Where were they? Why do you accuse the nation that at least WAS TRYING to help someone? It was impossible to help every person in need – sorry that your family experienced bad things. But do not accuse whole nation. Many people helped and even lost their lives/families because of that. I must say right away, I’m proud to be Polish. I love my motherland like crazy, but that doesn’t mean I’m ready to blindly believe that we haven’t made any mistakes during our long history of misery. Yes, misery played a huge part in the history of forming our country, our nation. I don’t claim that we are perfect, because I don’t believe in simple classification on the good and the bad ones. And though I know that some of Poles during the II World War haven’t be exactly brothers to the Jews, I refuse to calmly accept that sort of historical lies you’re spreading. Debbie! It makes me laugh that you claim that Facebook took your post down to tell Poles to stop attacking you. The truth is that a lot of people reported the post as abuse towards ethicity and therefore facebook deleted it.
Anyway, I have said it countless times before on your facebook fan page that Poland was very welcoming towards Jews when other counties were hunting them down (and this will be in history books). When other European countries burned people for following different religions etc., Poland was a safe haven for them. I suggest you read the “Poland A History” by Adam Zamoyski. The Jewish population in Poland multiplied each time there was an anti-Semitic witch-hunt in other countries. Intellectual, political and religious liberty was present in Poland as long ago as the 1500s. The freedom to practice any religion without suffering discrimination was enshrined in our constitution. Arians, Muslims, Jews, Protestants and everyone seeking freedom were welcomed. Poland was the most multicultural country in Europe, the most cosmopolitan and liberal. Anti-Semitism was brought upon firstly by the partitions of Poland by Prussia, Russia and Austro-Hungary. All the other nations were artificially removed from Poland in the 20th century by the Nazis. Statistics of the Israeli War Crimes Commission indicate that less than 0.1% of Polish gentiles collaborated with the Nazis (this is less than in other European countries). Grouped by nationality, Poles represent the biggest number of people who rescued Jews during the Holocaust.
So, there were so many Jewish people in Poland because that was the only place in Europe, where they found hospitality. Poles are not attempting to hide Jedwabne or any other crime that polish citizens have committed towards Jews – our former president publicly apologised for Jedwabne. Also, it is true that among many thousands of posts on your fan page, there were some anti-semitic ones, too. But in my opinion you angered people because she offended their nation so they responded by offending yours. Still, I believe there aren’t many true anti-Semitic people in Poland, there is, however, a great bunch of patriots who will fight to death for honour.
Please, I am pleading with you to answer our questions – the polite, intelligent debates we are trying to have with you to defend the memory of our grandparents. My granddad was a partizant fighting for his country, his brother was killed in Katyn by the Soviets, my great-uncle was in the army in September 1939 and fought to defend Warsaw – they would all be turning in their graves if they read your articles. Have you heard of Joseph Nitchthauser – a Jew who was raised in Poland and moved to Brazil? He has written articles about Poland and how polish people helped Jews. I believe your granddad was not Aaron the confidant who everyone is talking about. But who was your gradfather? Was it Benzion Schlussel? If so, did he not come to the US in 1893? Is your story made up? If not, then I am very sorry about the tragedy of your family, but our families suffered, too. Yet, Poles remained in majority of cases, simply human in the times, when people turn into animals just to survive.

Any factual sources of information would confirm that most Poles have either helped Jews during holocaust or kept quiet and only tried to survive themselves. Our grandparents fought for their country and freedom, many of them received the Order of Righteous Among Nations for helping Jews (more polish people than any other nation). Your article stating that most Poles were eager Nazi-helpers is a spiteful, hurtful lie that attempts to walk all over our pride and the memory of our ancestors. Even the Poles who collaborated with Nazis have later been found to have had German origins in many cases.
I would not be surprised if all this commotion has been created by you on purpose just to gain fame and publicity and surely, you did that just fine. If you do not mind being hated by Muslims, Indians, gays and now Poles then fair play to you for reaching your goals.

Even as an attorney and MBA graduate you don’t necessarily have to be competent in history science. The more so even as a MENSA member (that means your IQ is skyrocketing) you also don’t have to be wise. Your emotional intelligence seems not to exist at all. While looking into your public career, one can only say that you are just famous, and nothing more. Plus, you are overwhelmed and obsessed by HATRED against Poles and Poland.

I can understand your family’s terrific experience in Poland during the WWII. But bearing in mind your blind passion when you are mentioning a great number of your family members who suffered all the worst, allegedly from Poles and easiness you throw the accusations at the nation, I strongly doubt whether you’ve ever put enough effort in honest investigation of each case. Even if you know for sure who is to be blamed for slaughtering your family, it’s only a particular fate. Extending such accusation over the entire Polish nation as being complicit in Holocaust is an evident proof that you are the moron, whom you are referring to on several occasions and not those who also consider Mr. Obama’s wording “Polish death camps” as historically untrue and insulting.

History science is not something for stupid amateurs. It requires extreme effort to be made while endeavoring to find real (and well documented) evidences, gather reliable stories, seek for trustworthy people, instead of prejudices. Especially, when it comes to extremely delicate relationship between Poles and Jews. Of course, I am not to say there’ve never been ugly events, pogroms, bans on civil rights and freedom to work being imposed on Jews; also that there’ve never been anti-Semitism in Poland. All of those gloomy things were to observed here and there. But there are thousands of light years far from the swill you run on Poles. How come there could had lived 3 million Jews in Poland? Were they forced to come in by the Poles? Opposite, over centuries Jews usually were kept being expelled from another European countries, where they suffered genuine anti-Semitism. And in Poland they could had counted on at least peaceful treatment. Looking only at XX century, how one could otherwise explain a essential participation of Jews as soldiers, even officers, in the Polish army after WWI (war with Bolsheviks in 1920) and during WWII – see hundreds of Jewish graves with David star on in Monte Cassino cemetary, Italy. Yes, in every nation, American included there are people and incidents that need to be condemned. But this is drastically different from the accusations you dare to cast at Poles. You know nothing and think unreasonably.

Poles had never facilitated erecting, managing, maintaining any concentration camp. All of them were made and run by Germans (not Nazis as you love to prattle). Bear in mind that more than 90% of Germans strongly and willingly, without any coercion, supported Mr. Hitler. They all felt extremely proud in killing Jews. And this was not only a matter of executing orders. They really liked doing it very much. Hitler’s propaganda was extremely effective even within the nation that co-created European culture. As a would-be conservative you should be much more pessimistic about human nature, without humiliating just Poles. Yes, some Poles were also murderes and took advantage over Jewish properties once they were forcibly abandoned. However, have you ever made the slightest effort to do reliable research in order to count their share in Polish population? No way, its beyond your stupidity, prejudice and hatred against Poles, under overwhelming influence of some other monors, like – for instance – Mr. Jan Tomasz Gross, who also hate Poles, regardless. On the other hand have you ever noticed that more than 6 thousand Poles have been granted by Yad Vashem with Righteous Among the Nations Award, which was given to those who saved Jews during Holocaust. The population of Poles amounts to almost half of all of the grantees. So, it was not only Mr. Jan Karski. Also, take into account that death penalty was inevitable not only for those whose managed to hide Jews but also for offering them a small piece of bread. If you necessarily want to blame somebody for anti-Semitism do it against Mr. Roosevelt (your former president) or Mr. Winston Churchill, who both didn’t want to hear from said Mr. Karski about Holocaust that was brought about in Poland.

There were probably more reasons why Germans (I repeat – not only Nazis) built so many death camps in Poland. But one is obvious – Poland is located in the very middle of Europe where there is relatively shortest or even distance to and from the West and the East, the South and the North. Cannot you see it on the map? Another reason being related to German’s far-reaching aim which was to exterminate all the nationalities – Jews first, they considered useless such as Slavians, Gypsies (general category of sub-human) or hostile like Christians, priests.

To summarize I have no hope whatsoever that you never ever will get wiser and apologize for the harm you’ve done to Poles and Poland but I strongly oppose if you ever take any stand on Polish affairs in the future. Play only with your Muslims, at will.

I like Debbie’s columns very much. It is true many Poles participated in the death camps as capos. I’m sure many Poles saved many Jews as well. My country held slaves, for which we still pay today. But one thing is certain, we all need to take a deep breath and face the FACTS. Then, maybe, we can move on and not repeat the horrors of the past.
