Obama Tacky: Prez Who Whines Against CEO Perks & Salaries/Urges Belt-Tightening, Buys Gauche $3,500 Swingset for Daughters; UPDATE: Swing Set is $10,000?!

By Debbie Schlussel
**** SCROLL DOWN FOR UPDATE: Obama Swing Set Might Have Cost $10,000 ***
As I’ve written over and over again on this site, the Obamas have no sense of decency or self-discipline. They just don’t have any sensitivity to what the rest of America is going through. And they’re not the “regular people” the press keeps telling us that they are.
President Obama whines on about and rails against high salaries and perks of CEOs and tells us all we must tighten our belts. Yet, he sends his kids to a school that costs him about $55,000 a year (where they dine on roast Atlantic salmon and cheese and crackers), and Mrs. Obama just hired a hifalutin designer to re-decorate the White House residence to the tune of $100,000.
But their latest purchase in this era of tough times for most other Americans is the new swing set the Obamas bought their daughters, to the tune of $3,500 plus. It’s also their tackiest.

Obama $3,500-Plus Swingset: Spend As I Say, Not As I Do

To most Americans, a $3,500 swing set–let alone anything for $3,500–is far out of reach. While most American kids don’t even have swing sets, those who do generally have something far more modest than this showy display. For all of Mrs. Obama’s bragging to the press how her girls are going to have to make their beds and will be treated like regular kids, it was all bunk. Her kids got a swing set befitting the spoiled kids of rich elitists she claims they aren’t.
And it’s just plain tacky. When your country is suffering, when people are losing their jobs and homes en mass, their investments are plummeting, and you are telling Americans to do more with less and tighten their belts . . . you rub their noses in it by buying your kiddies a backyard toy for nearly four grand?! Talk about hypocrisy.
Gauche to the nth.
I believe Americans should be able to do and spend with their own money as they please, but since Barack Obama is telling us otherwise and taxing us to death, he should take a little of his own advice–like cutting his spending and not purchasing the swingset of gazillionaires.
The Obama purchase of the Rainbow Castle Package 4 is excessive for liberals who are taxing everyone else to death and telling us to eat cake, while tightening our belts. It’s not only hypocritical, it’s a bad example.
Even more glaring is the fact that instead of pointing this out, the mainstream media fawns over this swing set, gushing about what great parents the Obamas are for buying this monstrosity. You know, the same media yelling and whining and screaming about anyone else with money actually spending it on anything.
Play the politics of class-envy and hate the rich . . . but only when they’re not surnamed Obama.
**** UPDATE, 03/06/09: Reader Mike writes that the press is low-balling the cost of the Obama swingset, and that it apparently costs $10,000.

You are way off about the price of that swingset. I’ve priced them out. There is no way that cost $3,500. (I know, I bought one from rainbow a few years back) That set shown has to have cost way over 10K.
For what its worth.
Mike

$10,000 for a swingset for his kids in this economy, while he’s telling everyone else in America to tighten their belts while he taxes them to death?!
Whoa, that’s chutzpah.

I guess it started with Maria Antoinette. These people never think that they have to follow the same rules as the rest of us, and they are so egocentric that it never occurs to them that they should at least maintain some kind of appearance of subdued living.
Their egos make it impossible to empathize with the rest of us. The press is a combination of big egos themselves, or a desire to identify with those having big egos. They think if they write glowingly of Obama somehow it will rub off on them like osmosis. The overwhelming majority of the press is second-rate or third-rate with nothing to distinguish them, so they look for form over substance.

Oh come on. While you’re criticizing Obama for giving his children a swingset, you totally forgot that Sarah Palin spent 150,000 dollars on her wardrobe.

ghibli92 on March 5, 2009 at 9:00 pm

The Obamas can have a fancy-shmancy swingset for their daughters. What’s hypocritical is they berate others for living like they do.
Its typical of liberals: one rule for them, another rule for every one else to live under.

NormanF on March 5, 2009 at 9:00 pm

Ghibli, that was excess to be sure. The difference is the Right doesn’t tell people how to live their lives. The Left does and when they live better than regular folks, the media doesn’t draw attention to it.

NormanF on March 5, 2009 at 9:05 pm

Debbie, As usual you go to far. Housing is important, and this is only 1/2 the price of a new house in Detroit. So he is saving 50%.

PatinAtlanta on March 5, 2009 at 10:02 pm

Debbie, I think I know what’s going on here. In the old Soviet Union, the wealthy few were mostly Party bigshots and their small cliques. In a way the obama crowd wants to emulate this. They aren’t offended by wealthy people as long as there aren’t too wealthy and the source of the money is political control and not a free market enterprise. We are going down a rat hole, and the loss of economic freedom is just the beginning if Obama has his way. BTW, as in the early USSR, Jews will be both the architects and the main losers in this left wing scheme.

All I can say is aaaagggghh. Seriously. I don’t even know what else to say. And it’s been less than THREE MONTHS.

PollyPrissyPants on March 5, 2009 at 11:06 pm

This is exactly how the Ruling class operates in a Communist State. The Obama Nation is the worst crisis that our nation has experienced since the Civil War. The moron masses just don’t get it. As a result, the economy will get much worse before it gets better. It will only get better when the Obama Nation is defeated.

“Can you smell the crap ‘The Barack’ is cooking?”
Just like the phony excuse that they wouldn’t get their dog from a shelter or get a mutt because one of their daughter’s is hyper allergenic. Yeah Right? After he said he supported animal rights group call for getting rescued dogs or shelter dogs. Well that is ok for the small people.
KING HUSSEIN COBRAMA said he was against earmarks as well but supports the 8500+ earmarks in the omnibus bill. The “alleged” President as Alan Keyes call him.

Let’s not forget that these “common people” also indulge in $100.00 a pound imported Japanese beef and command performances by washed-up ’70’s funk bands. Comparing these communist usurpers to Marie Antoinette and Louis the Last is entirely accurate…now all we need is a Maxmillian Robespierre to take care of Barry and Shelly.

Typical obvious problems other than money
1 The set is from rare redwoods. This set caused a lot of damaging defforestation to build
2 Parts and accessories are from fossil fuels used to make plastics. what were they thinking
3 The wood is stained with volatile Organic compounds which are toxic for human life.
Obama is an enviromental disaster waiting for new places to pollute daily. Shall we aks him what he was thinking when he tried this stunt?

That thing is nicer than some of the houses I have lived in. Liberals are famous for looking out for you and telling you whats best for you. If he really wanted his kids to grow up normal he would have sent them to public school in DC.I was really looking forward to the kids high school days in the White House, a whole bunch of Hondas and Toyota with loud exhaust and tinted windows with speakes blaring on the south lawn of the WH. Pants down below there butts and smoking blunts and secret service getting a contact high. That is the cover of Life Magazine I am waiting for.

Mark on March 6, 2009 at 8:39 am

I’m not sure you’re using “belt-tightening” right. The CEOs who are being condemned for luxury are those taking public money! That’s wasting our tax dollars. But all other CEOs are encouraged to spend their money and not to save it in the bank. This is straight from Republicans as well as Democrats. Obama, Ben Stein, and I implore you to buy as much playground equipment, cars, and other things made in the USA! Save a few more American jobs. Thanks Obama. The American workers who made that swingset and the American company that hires them and the American investors in that company are doing better as a result.

JPRS on March 6, 2009 at 8:53 am

How you can even use him sending his children to school as a bad point is beyond me. There is a difference between practice what you preach and being excessively frugal with your money. Unless you’re expecting him to donate 90% of his finances to charity then there’s nothing wrong with him spending some of it on his family. He is the president of our nation, and part of that role is to maintain a good image. It would look worse for him to toss his kids in public school when he has the money for better, not renovate the White House (which every president who’s ever lived there has spent money on, by the way), or deny his kids toys if he can afford it. He’s maintaining his image and keeping his family happy, he’s not buying gold plated toilet seats and golf courses. Spending money on your family is not the same as frivolously throwing it on worthless overpriced garbage like so many CEOs do.

King Noodle on March 6, 2009 at 9:26 am

Boy,is this petty. Obama should have denied his kids a swing set? Who knows what they paid for it? It was paid for with their money.
Good for them.

John Steele on March 6, 2009 at 10:46 am

I really have no problem myself with this playground equipment. My pastors kids played with the Clinton kid at her house. I hope school kids come over and play outside.
This is many times more beneficial than a big screen or video games. It is a hundred times more utilitarian than squeezing Michell into 3,500 dollar dresses.

I wonder why “Mike” would email, and not post.
[JS: I KNOW HIM, AND HE HAS A VERY LEGIT REASON. DS]

John Steele on March 6, 2009 at 11:29 am

Debbie, Given the rising rates of obesity and diabetes among kids today, I think President Obama is sending Americans the right message:
Get your kids from out in front of the doggone computer/TV/Playstation and make them play outside!!! I don’t care if it’s using a broomstick as a bat as I had to in my youth or if it’s on a $10,000 playground set…keep your kids moving and physically fit! $10,000 is a small investment compared to a lifetime of medical bills due to obesity-related illnesses.
Plus, outside play encourages social interaction, negotiation, healthy competition, and cooperation, much more so than staying inside all day playing video games and watching TV.

JibberJabber on March 6, 2009 at 12:16 pm

>> encourages social interaction, negotiation, healthy competition, and cooperation
Golf does, too. Can ‘rich’ executives head back to the golf resorts now..? And, it employs people.
Is Obama going to get that message out?

ohboyohboy on March 6, 2009 at 2:43 pm

Oh I have to make one more comment! The liberal media are something else. They could not wait to write and mock Bush. But when Gore the Bore was out making movies about global warming, they forget to point out that his nice mansion in Tenn. used more resources then probably 10 to 20 regular homes. While Busheys Crawford Ranch is a very efficient energy friendly.

ohboyohboy on March 6, 2009 at 2:51 pm

John S.
I really don’t think the rich ever stopped going to golf resorts. The owner of my company is still taking his weekend excursions to them. But then, he didn’t take any “Stimulus” money either, so he has no reason to lay low. And last I looked, most golf resorts are still open for business.
That contraption that the President bought for his kids looks quite a bit like one I see at the park near my house. And that makes sense. The President and his wife can no longer just scoop the girls up and take them to the local park without causing massive traffic jams, major access problems for the public, and a media frenzy.
So it was better to just buy the kids a playground set if they like to play outside rather than the hassle of taking them to a park. Of course, Obama haters will go into a tizzy over anything he does just like the Bush haters did poor George, so more power to him. Obama, take care of your girls as you see fit and let the criticism come…

JibberJabber on March 6, 2009 at 3:25 pm

JibberJabber >> really don’t think the rich ever stopped going to golf resorts
I guess I read different news accounts then? So, what recession? Since YOUR owner is able to go.
Obama can buy 3 swing sets, I don’t care. But he should not concern himself with what free Americans do with their own money (legally). I’m sure he’ll refrain from using his bully pulpit to be the class warfare judge? We’ll see.

John S. on March 6, 2009 at 4:48 pm

” The difference is the Right doesn’t tell people how to live their lives”
HA!
You people on the far-right do nothing else EXCEPT tell people how to live their lives. That’s your whole reason for living right there.

No Pasaran! on March 6, 2009 at 6:38 pm

OBAMA is (again) the “do as I say and not as I do” (elected) President.
OBAMA should focus on trying to SAVE the children, yet to be born but living nonethless inside their Mothers stomachs, instead of allowing them to have a drill instered into their heads and their brains sucked out while they are SCREAMING/DYING, instead of allowing ABORTION 24/7 with NO restrictions. Yes, it is a TERRIBLE visual picture but it happens – in America – to our most helpless.
WHO of us knows what God’s intent was for that child? Could this girl, or boy, of been the one to cure Aids? Cancer? To sing a song that lifted our spirits? To write a Poem and stays on the tongue? To build a business employing thousands of American Citizens? To be a Teacher improving the lives of Americans? To stop a bullet meant to harm a child? To rise into Politics by working for EVERYONE honestly…and fairly. To write a column that allows those to post, to read, educate, and to vent.
Only God knows their purposes…and it was NOT to allow them to grow, and live, just to die…helplessly.
God bless them…all.

Awww Yes!
LET THEM EAT CAKE!
I am sick of all this BS already! This has been the most embarrassing administration. If all that’s happened would have been predicted 2 years ago, I would have said the person was clearly mad. It is maddening! I agree that the children should go to private school but one that cost 55k a year? Is that per child? I am sure there are plenty of private schools in DC that are less than half that. It being paid for with Obama’s money is not the point. They are demanding and stealing our Grandchildren’s money that has not even been made yet and this is the image he wants for the rest of us?
What about totally dising on our Allies in the UK by sending that Bust back? That belonged to the People and it was not his to give! He insulted PM Brown by giving him DVDs? Denied the UK press from having a press conference? Why? Was he afraid they might ask him some tough real questions? You bet!
The American people need to come together and stop this madness real soon!

Holly on March 6, 2009 at 7:30 pm

well, if he paid for it with his own money (unlikely) he stimulated some ones economy. But more than likely he got a “deal” or “free donation” or we paid for it.

ender on March 6, 2009 at 9:37 pm

We have nearly the same Rainbow Playset we purchased for approximately $4,200 in 2001 ($500 more if the company set it up – we did that ourselves).
Originally we were checking pricing on taking the family to Disney World that year (we had 6 kids at that time). When that was cost prohibitive, we settled on the playset which turned out to be a great investment considering we had 2 more children.
In any case, if that picture shows the Obama’s exact playset, I don’t think it would cost $10,000 unless there is a cost difference between Detroit metro and Washington, DC.

I’d hate to be your kid, I would be deprived of every enriching environment i deserved. SO WHAT IF HE WANTS HE KIDS TO HAVE FUN AND NOT WORRY ABOUT ALL THE CRAP THE COUNTRY IS GOING THROUGH. You, ma’am, are a complete self-absorbed moron.
