How Bad is the Economy?: The “Canned Protein Index”

By Debbie Schlussel
How bad is the economy? So bad, that this is making a comeback and they can’t can it fast enough. Glad I keep kosher and can’t consume this. Still, I’m also glad that other people find an economical way to get their protein in these tough times. At least, I think it’s protein.

SPAM? No – its not kosher but for many Americans in hard times, it will stretch their food dollars.

I wouldn’t worry too much YET. When you do a blog about Ramen Noodles flying off of store shelves then you might have a cause for concern.

Have been to Hawaii and go to any 7-11 or convenience store and they have this fried Spam on rice dish like sushi. Not a spam fan. Had to try it out. All I can say is glad there was enough rice to drown out the spam.

Greetings:
Well, I am an “Army brat”, and I grew up on Spam.
Mama would roast it whole in the oven, or slice it up and fry it in a skillet.
I liked it when she served hot slices of Spam with spaghetti mixed with melted Velveeta cheese.
Mmmmm, boy!
Sometimes, she’d cut up the Spam and mix it into the spaghetti and Velveeta.
We also ate it in sandwiches, cooked or uncooked, with or without a slice of Velveeta cheese.
I no longer eat Velveeta cheese, but I still buy the individually packaged slices of Spam in our PX.
I either use it for sandwiches, or I nuke it in my microwave, and eat it with a package of microwaveable Uncle Ben’s rice.
Today, when eating a Spam sandwich, I have to add a squirt of mustard.
But, when I was a boy, I hated mustard, and would only put catsup on my food.
They don’t serve Spam in our mess hall.
Thank you.

It may have more to do with Obama – Hawaii is THE leading consumer of Spam.

in the first Gulf War the Iraqi POW’s ate this Spam stuff up like crazy. Don’t think they figured out what it was (just like the rest of us) but when your a starving “army” you eat what ever is tossed at you.
