World’s Most Famous Failed High School Jock Gets New Sports Card Series

By Debbie Schlussel
Yes, I know, his high school hoops team went to the Hawaii state championship, but it wasn’t that he was all that on the court. If it were, he’d have gotten a basketball scholarship.
Still, now, I’m gonna have to rethink my patronage of Topps (I have a Wacky Packs collection), since they now think photos of some guy’s high school basketball games are worthy of a sports card series:

The Topps Company, Inc. today unveiled a Barack Obama commemorative trading card series which pays special tribute to President-Elect Barack Obama and his historic achievements. . . .

obamatradingcard.jpg.jpg

“The presidential election of Barack Obama is a milestone event destined to be written about and discussed for generations,” said Topps CEO Scott Silverstein. “Through the medium of its familiar trading cards, Topps is proud and honored to offer consumers with a one-of-a-kind keepsake of this remarkable moment.”
The Topps 90-card series documents, in nearly 200 color photos and fact-filled text, Obama’s only-in-America life story, beginning with his humble childhood and culminating with his incredible rise to the White House.
Each of the 90 cards comprising the Barack Obama Inaugural Edition tell a different and compelling story of his life — from his childhood in Hawaii to his college days at Columbia and Harvard … from his job as a community organizer on Chicago’s South Side to his election to the U.S. Senate in 2004…from his whirlwind presidential campaign to his rousing victory speech on election night. Poignant relationships with his parents, grandparents, wife, children and other family members are featured, as well as those with political figures and global leaders, in photos and words, many culled from Obama’s own speeches and writings.

The series also includes:
* Newsworthy appearances of influential public figures such as Oprah Winfrey, Caroline Kennedy and Bruce Springsteen
* A “first dog” redemption card which entitles fans to receive a printed Topps card featuring the to-be-determined White House pup
* A rare Obama card pictured in his Punahou High School basketball uniform — within a vintage 1978 Topps basketball card design
* Foil stamped inaugural parallel cards
* Silver foil sticker parallels which include powerful slogans and quotes as well as photographic imagery
Each foil-wrapped pack contains six premium-quality cards, plus one sticker, at a suggested retail price of $1.99 per pack and is available now in stores nationwide.

Already trading at e-bay.
Better name for this: Wacky Packs, All New Series #10.
Strange, but these “poignant photos” aren’t included in the Topps series. Damn. . .

No Rashid Khalidi cards either, since the video is still “unavailable.”

In other silly Barack-Obama-As-Faux-Sports-Star news, the Brooklyn Cyclones will change its name to the “Baracklyn Cyclones” on June 23 and give away Obama bobbleheads. Pathetic.

President George H.W. Bush (41) played 1st Base on the Yale Baseball Team, and I don’t remember Topps releasing a commemorative set for him. This Obama-worshipping is beyond creepy.

Aside from the irritating PC nature of all of this, is the degradation of the concept of ‘history’. Now, ‘history’ includes only PC milestones, past and present. Textbooks only present incidents that either illustrate the march towards PC, or illustrate barriers that had or ‘have’ to be removed in order to achieve PC.
This carries over into the present. ‘Historic’ things are those that move towards PC. History used to mean history, i.e. a reconstruction of what happened and why, and let the chips fall where they may.
Now, it is like Stalinism; history is just the march towards PC, past and present, just as in the Stalinist Soviet Union (sic), history was the march towards Stalinism.

The inauguration of the first black president of the United States is a big deal and everyone wants to cash in on the occasion. Capitalizing on such a good opportunity to make money is very American.

LoveAManInAUniform on January 14, 2009 at 5:24 pm

Any bets on how soon this hero worship will give way to serious disappointment?

Red Ryder on January 14, 2009 at 5:47 pm

Maybe it’s the B-Schooler in me, but I don’t see it as “PC” or “hero worship”. It’s good old fashioned American marketing and capitalism. Everyone (such as Pepsi and Topps) is trying to ride Obama’s popularity wave and make a buck off his election.
Yes, some of this stuff is definitely a little over-the-top. But given today’s economic climate, if this “Obama-mania” marketing frenzy creates and/or maintains some jobs and puts a little money in the pocket of some creative entreprenuers, then more power to it…

JibberJabber on January 14, 2009 at 6:15 pm

But can we really separate the means from the end?

c f on January 14, 2009 at 6:27 pm

Yes, I know, his high school hoops team went to the Hawaii state championship, but it wasn’t that he was all that on the court. If it were, he’d have gotten a basketball scholarship.
I know, LeBron James is an awful basketball player since he didn’t get any scholarships either.
[C a/k/a DEBBIE HATER: HELLOOOOO . . .? IF LEBRON DIDN’T GO PRO STRAIGHT FROM HIGH SCHOOL, HE COULD HAVE GOTTEN A FREE RIDE WHEREVER HE WANTED. IT’S NOT LIKE THE NBA WANTED TO DRAFT AND SIGN BHO RIGHT OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL . . . OR EVER. NICE TRY, NO CIGAR. DS]

Last November I was in Prague and on my last day there I visited The Museum of Communism. What were so striking about it were all those statues and posters of Joseph Stalin and his Czechoslovak flunky (named) Klement Gottwald which were pictures of such adoration with the accompanying cult of personality. I never thought that I would see that same cult of personality here in America.

Ripper on January 14, 2009 at 7:36 pm

chitown85, are you really as stupid as you appear? LeBron James was picked 1st in the NBA draft and signed for $90 Million. Since you seem to be (willfully?) ignorant of the rules; you can’t get a BB scholarship once you sign for $90 million to play BB. LeBron was highly recruited, Barry O’Crap was not.
I can’t wait for the public displays of outrage at the failure of Barry O. No doubt the cards will be burned, the bobble-heads smashed, coins sold to pay for food, and the media gasping to keep the S.S. Obatanic afloat.
It’s not so much PC, as it is “cult of personality.”
The best part of all this schlock being sold, is that it drains money from those who support him. Once again, they show why they were taken in by the left. If it were not so serious, it would be hysterically funny.

Mark L. Jackson on January 14, 2009 at 7:48 pm

The contract was for shoes, which made him a pro. Just to be clear.

Mark L. Jackson on January 14, 2009 at 7:50 pm

Oh yeah, and he played in 2 High School All-Star games. The NCAA stripped him of any eligibility for breaking the rule on only playing in one.

Mark L. Jackson on January 14, 2009 at 7:53 pm

After this we now know for sure that some companies will do anything and I mean anything to make money. Even support a no nothing, do nothing empty suit.

MdDeeDa on January 14, 2009 at 8:12 pm

new Sports Illustrated has basketball-bama on the cover, from the headline (the audacity of hoops-still laughing at that)it implies if you play basketball then you should be president. President elect Michael Jordon anyone?
Wasn’t Michelle’s scholarship tied to her brothers sports scholarship?

ender on January 14, 2009 at 8:49 pm

That sure is a nice finger PEBO is showing. Really shows his intelligence.
Now all that has to be done is show he was born in Kenya, open all his records to show he is still an Indonesian citizen, still is a Muslim, and is going to try to get Sharia law in the US like there is in Europe.

The white man MAKING MONEY off some Black man’s accomplishment and YOU’re complaining???
The whole magazine industry is recuperating now with all those Obama covers…and if Detroit’s Big 3 could come up with a Barackmobile then MAYBE they could make some money too.
Face it, Barack’s bigger than the Beatles…and maybe even JC!

Even Trojan condoms is selling Obama Condoms. Maybe that will solve the illegitimacy rate in the inner city. You think? Uhhhhhhhh, NO!

If I remember right, LeBron’s going pro stemmed from two things: the money to go pro was too lucrative to turn down and, due to his grades, he wasn’t exactly getting inundated with offers from powerhouses like Duke, North Carolina or Kentucky.
That being said, looks like the world is really going overboard with its Orbamasm.

Miss Schlussel, Et Alii:
Where’s the bubble gum?
Aren’t sports trading cards included with bubble gum?
That’s how it was when I was a kid.
You bought bubble gum, and five (05) baseball player trading cards were included.
Later, they included football player trading cards.
I don’t remember seeing any basketball players featured on bubble gum trading cards.
Hey, us kids want bubble gum!
(Once, at a church picnic, I won a bubble gum contest for blowing the largest bubble.)
Back in those days, the Braves were in Milwaukee, and the Dodgers were in Brooklyn.
Thank you.

Does ICE have any SAC openings? JibberJabber is ICE SAC material for sure. Of course Marcy Foreman’s relatives will get first preference. In that case, Bully Barnette’s days abusing an Official Government Vehicle in his patronage job, HMFIC in charge of the Numero Uno bureaucratic boondoggle, the Tactical Intelligence Center, at Stennis Space Center in Mississippi, may be numbered.

bonzerwolf on January 14, 2009 at 10:32 pm

Debbie, I also collected (and still collect) Wacky Packs. If you are missing any, or might want to trade, let me know.
Re: “rethink my patronage of Topps”, yes, I agree. this basketball card is yet another example of sheep to the slaughter. People seem to have completely stopped thinking for themselves. And it’s getting out of hand. The feckless fawning, the servile toadying is completely insufferable. Rush is right, they are actually treating him like the messiah (I’m hesitant to actually capitalize the “M”) incarnate.
We can only hope he blunders enough to allow a conservative to correct this madness in 2012. (although, I’m not going to hold my breath.)

Ripper !
I notice that you are one of the commentators
that has a fairly good knowledge of history.
You are absolutely right about Obama as a Cult
of Personality ! There is nothing that failing
public schools, a film industry dominated by
queers and Commies, and a Liberal press can’t
accomplish !
Welcome Big Brother !

Hawkins on January 14, 2009 at 11:25 pm

Hawkins
Thank you very much. Yes I have been a history buff ever since I was in 1st grade and I like to make historical analogies.
Face it, from pre-K through Graduate School, schools are dominated by leftists, liberals, and Marxists.

Ripper on January 15, 2009 at 8:31 am

I love it!
This guy is so overlyhyped it’s going to be a quick, hard fall. I just feel he’s an empty suit. Cute speeches with catch phrases won’t solve a thing.
Oh,here’s a prediction I’ve been telling everyone:
In 2 months the economy will be declared the best economy of the last 50 years. The media is doing all they can to set up Obama as a savior.
Sure the economy is bad right now, but if I listened to the news I would hide under the bed right now. It’s really not that bad, just a well needed market correction.
The more I see ObamaMania the more I am glad he got elected instead of McCain as this will be the best thing for the conservative movement for the next 20 years.

Jeff_W on January 15, 2009 at 8:55 am

Well I guess Obama will be the 2nd U.S. president to be issued on a TOPPS trading card.Back in 91 Topps had George H.W.Bush in the Desert Storm trading card sets. Now if I can only find my angle to making some bucks off Obama…capitalism at it’s finest.

Chiefscotty24 on January 15, 2009 at 10:10 am

thanks for the info, Debbie. I order one of the 6 pack of cards. couldn’t have done it without you, kiddo!

greenlynn on January 15, 2009 at 11:18 am

Greenlyn, did you read my info? Order a 6 pack of Obama condoms. Then you can tell me you couldn’t have done it without me. I want my props!
