Hilarious: Obama Makes Predictably Absurd Appointment (First of Many)

By Debbie Schlussel
Yesterday, when Michigan Upper Peninsula blogger Orlin Bowman told me that Barack Obama appointed Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm and former Democrat Congressman David Bonior to his economic advisory team, I though Orlin was joking.
Sadly, he was not.
As you may know, the Governatrix Gran-HO–as I like to call her–has presided over the transformation of Michigan to the point of one of its worst economic depressions ever. Yes, Michigan is in a depression, NOT just a recession. And, while some of it is due to the failure of the auto industry, a good deal of it is because of her rampant tax-raises, spending, and hundreds of millions of dollars she’s giving to Hollywood bigwigs to come film movies here, then leave with our money.

What’s next–appointing Ahmadinejad as head of Homeland Security? Well, he’s gonna be talking to him, real soon.
Read Orlin Bowman’s brief, on point remarks about the Obama Gran-Ho appointment. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is just south of Canada, and was once likely to be part of it. Maybe Orlin is considering secession.

Didn’t you know the minute she opened the proceedings that finally got Kwame to take a plea and resign that there was something in it for her? You don’t seriously believe would do the right thing without something in it for herself? Someone said yesterday “Putting Granholm on an economic advisory panel makes as much sense as putting Colonel Sanders in charge of Chicken Welfare.”
Just keep her mole-ness off the Supreme Court!

Gran-ho? No one can ever say that you are biased in favor of MOTs. She has been abysmal and I wonder what the other participants at Obama’s economic conference today are thinking about her presence and The Beard’s.

I think that he has a dual objective on his economic team, both political and economic. Based on WSJ coverage, it does sound like he is collaborating with some individuals who are very experienced, and basically as competent (or incomptetent) as the Bush bailout people – e.g. Summers, Rubin, etc. I’m wondering whether Granholm and Bonier are there for show, or for the base. It looks like the Bush bailout socialism will continue; e.g. more handouts to incompetent auto companies. I am certainly not happy to see so many people out of work in Michigan, but the car companies themselves have much of the responsibility, and bailing them out will just either postpone the day of reckoning, or establish the rule that taxpapers make up the profit of unprofitable companies.

You mean all that blather from Jeff Daniels didn’t help Michigan’s economy?

I think Gov. Granholm will make an EXCELLENT economic advisor to President-Elect O’Bama.
I can see it now: “DON’T DO THAT!!!! We tried it in Michigan already and the results were AWEFUL!”

More stimulus checks are coming. Increasing the EITC (Earned Income Tax Credit) for people who dont work or work little, so they pay a negative tax. So we give people a check for being a warm body. One trillion dollar deficit coming. More indebted to Red China. I guess they will buy our debt if we give them more our jobs.

I live in Michigan and concur with Debbie on Granholm. Newspaper industry also is in the tank.
After four years of Obama, I think it will be a very long time again before anyone’s elected president without at least 10 years as a senator or at least one term as governor.
Brace yourself for who could end up being the worst. president. ever.

Granholm has done nothing for the Michigan economy, and will screw up what is left of a working US economy. Granholm’s idea of saving Michigan was trying to create a few hundred low paying jobs while hundreds of thousands of high paying manufacturing and high tech jobs left the state. Even if Granholm knew something about business and free enterprise, I don’t see what she could have done about the fleeing Michigan auto industry. The auto industry isn’t just fleeing high taxes and regulations and unions, it is fleeing a workforce that has no work ethic and thinks they are owed a living. And the manufacturers would not be allowed by the government to hire other work forces, other than who they have been using in Flint, Pontiac, Detroit and Lansing. Equal opportunity and affirmative action laws would prevent this.
When I worked in the Buick plant in Flint, I saw that the same things that were going on on the streets of Flint were happening right on the factory floor: prostition, gambling, drugs, alcoholism and fighting. There were even murders in the plants, about one a year. There is no way you can build a quality product in this kind of envirionment.

Hey Deb,
In the event you have to make the case to someone who doesn’t believe you, here is an independent source.
According to the Cato Institute 2008 report card for fiscal responsibility of state governors, Granholm got a score of “D.”
Here is the link:

I do not always agree with Cato (I think that they do not understand the power of irrational forces), but I think their economic analysis is the best.

All of us in Michigan remember well what Gran-Ho said in her first state of the State message, “…and in 5 years, I’m gonna blow ’em away” Well it is slightly past 5 years and she has definitely delievered. Michigan’s economy has been blown away.
You can surely bet that Granny will give BHO some nifty little slogans to use for her little gimmicky type ideas–like the special breaks she doled out to the movie industry to get something to come here. Funny thing that she had just jammed a revolt generating tax increase on service businesses just prior to that in order to fund her expanding budgets. She finally backed down.
Yes, the idea that Gran-Ho merits BHO’s appointment to his team— is like MarySJ tagged it here–“Colonel Sanders in charge of chicken welfare.” To grow the economy, she will propose to pluck our wallets clean for more state welfare.
Her plan will be likely be called, The States re-investment act or the American renaissance plan–or some other dumb ass misnomer. That’s Gran-Ho’s MO.

Obama is going to “rescue” Michigan by pouring money into the auto industry because: Auto industry=unionized auto workers=mandatory union dues=PAC contributions to the Dems.
