Wknd Box Office: Bridesmaids, Meek’s Cutoff, Potiche

By Debbie Schlussel

I’m bored with the movies.   It’s yet another weekend of dreck debuting at the theater, with the worst being the man-chick version of “The Hangover.”

*  “Bridesmaids“:  I guess the new definition of female equality and civil rights for women is the equal opportunity for women to act like pigs.  And that’s what this is–the chick version of “The Hangover” (read my review).  Absolutely disgusting.  And it doesn’t work.  Plus, it’s already been done.  It’s called “Sex & the City.”  Yes, parts of this movie are really funny.  But most of it is just ugly chicks making me cringe, including and especially the morbidly obese huge fat lesbionic chick who mauls the Federal Air Marshal.  Wooooof.

If you’re entertained by bathroom humor, you’ll simply love this.  There’s a whole scene of women having mass diarrhea and vomiting attacks in the middle of a bridal salon.  Not funny, but pretty gross.  Oh, and of course, the mean chick–the villain of the movie–is the rich chick, ‘cuz, you know, Hollywood always has to play class warfare.

The story:  Kristen Wiig is a failed business owner/baker who wastes her life in perpetual loserdom and userdom, being used as a sex object by Jon Hamm, while her best friend, Maya Rudolph, gets engaged.  Soon, Wiig begins losing Rudolph as  her best friend, to the evil ways of beautiful, rich Rose Byrne, wife of Rudolph’s fiance’s boss.  And her life gets even worse, losing her job, apartment, and everything else.  With disaster after disaster, every event leading up to Rudolph’s wedding is a mess filled with gross jokes and disgusting humor. In the meantime, Wiig meets a nice cop who wants to date her but she disses him.

You don’t have to be a prude to hate this.  It was just sick.  Bleeeeeechhhhhhhh.  And that’s why I’m sure it will be number one at the box office.  There’s no accounting for good taste in America.

*  “Meek’s Cutoff“:  Normally, I like a good Western and American Old West period piece.  I’m not sure what the point of this was, other than to show that Americans were evil people who tormented American Indians.  We follow a bunch of settlers using a tour guide through the Oregon desert.  They are thirsty and looking for water, while also abusing an Indian who is their prisoner and can’t speak their language or communicate in any way.  The end.  The reason for this movie (other than hating America)?  Beats me.  Stars Michelle Williams and Bruce Greenwood.

*  “Potiche“:  This mildly-entertaining comedy starring Catherine Deneuve is a blatant feminist manifesto that is very dated, beyond its 1970s setting.  Deneuve is an aged trophy wife whose lout of a husband is cheating on her.  He gets taken hostage by striking workers,  and she takes over the family umbrella factory, giving the workers all the rights they demand, at the counsel of her former fling, the Marxist Mayor of the city (Gerard Depardieu).  In French, with English subtitles.

Catherine Deneuve once used to be voted by critics the most beautiful woman in the world.

A Marxist film out of France? I’d have given that one all Marxes.

This is kind of stuff belongs in a Sixties period film. No one cares about the New Left anymore.

Is it me or do they make museum-piece films in Europe?

I could have told you Bridesmaids would be a flop. Every couple of years they try to make a female version of a popular male movie and it is terrible. Two different senses of humor and two different audiences. The previews show nothing but cliche jokes and toilet humor. I assume Chelsea Handler fans will love this movie.

Good film review DS, but I gotta disagree with you a little about one of the scenes in “Bridesmaid”, where the plus-size girl sorta flirts with the FAM, I think that woman looks attracting, some men are attracted to plus-size women Debbie (that includes me). Other than that, I agree with your review and to me those films don’t exactly impress me!

Bridesmaids was given 4 out of 4 stars by a Grand Rapids Press reviewer.

Dr Dale on May 13, 2011 at 8:31 pm

    it deserved 4 stars.

it was a well-done, quirky comedy. there were some scenes that centered around the gross, but if you couldn’t laugh along with it then there’s something wrong with you (IMHO).

the story didn’t feature the grossness; it was more about the interplay of various female archetypes that were perfectly acted and flat-out hilarious.

i also found it a bit touching in that the story’s theme was two lifelong best friends’ struggles to stay connected into adulthood.

schlussel, get out of the movie review bidness.

I’m not sure what kind of movie reviews they do in the MSM, but there’s no accounting for good taste in America.

NormanF on May 13, 2011 at 8:46 pm

Saw priest today. It was as advertised. I found it to be very enjoyable and entertaining. I have no clue what movie the critics were watching.

It was some good ol action and violence with just enough storyline to keep you entertained.

Brads3wood on May 13, 2011 at 9:54 pm

Are poop jokes funny to anybody over the mental age of 4?

And am I the only one that finds movies where chicks behave like pigs isn’t the least bit attractive in any way?

I can’t even tolerate movies where men behave that way. Mostly because it’s about as funny as studying your 8 year old brother. It’s just not interesting to an adult mind.

Maybe I need to start getting hammered on booze before seeing some of these flicks. Sort of like how drunks are the most boring people in the world to a sober guy… maybe these rotten movies are only tolerable when you are sauced.

One can easily tell the state of a civilization just by its artistic output.

If people can’t, they should. Or else!

My verdict: I’m going to play Civilization V instead.

Then… TORRENT!

I am so annoyed that “Meek’s Cutoff” was not good. I. too, love a great Western so I thought I may like it. It sounded a tic like “The Donner Party” but the truth is when the director (a female, so that may be the problem) and the actress (Michelle Williams) was interviewed on NPR’s “Fresh Air”, they both could not really say what it was about.

At least if you’re gonna be cryptic, use Peter Weir’s “Picnic At Hanging Rock” as your guide. I won’t bother with this one.

Hey Rev., what is this Torrent you speak about regularly?

Skunky on May 14, 2011 at 10:33 am

Skunky: Torrent – as in BitTorrent – is a P2P protocol for sharing files, just like Limewire and GNUtella. It’s where I get my movies, tv show episodes and tunes. For free. Sorta.

I don’t want to condone stealing, but it’s there. And I share what I download.

Google “The Pirate Bay” for an example of a Torrent site.

Last time I checked, I haven’t seen any star or mogul crying destitution because of P2P. Then again, I may be wrong.

Happy Nakba Day!

The Religion Of Peace & Peaceableness in Israel launched terrorist attacks with cars ramming at high speed. One woman was killed.

Yup, this is how they show their sorrow over Israel’s creation.

Peaceful protests are showing just too much restraint.

If there isn’t violence happening, it ain’t Islam!

NormanF on May 15, 2011 at 12:15 pm

Yup, and at the MSNBC site, they’re blaming Israel for defending its borders.

Occam's Tool on May 15, 2011 at 2:36 pm

What do you expect from MSNBC, there employees at GE/MSNBC/NBC haven’t paid any type of income tax in two years and the Obama administration gave them a tax-exempt and also Obama gave GE a 3 billion contract two years ago pertaining to “green jobs” (which is a scam to itself).

Occam’s Tool, I’m really not surprised that the author and posters on MSNBC’s website are blaming Israel to protect themselves from the arab and muslim invaders who wants to waste them and eradict them. It’s clear to me that the writer and posters on MSNBC are “dhimmi’s” and apologizing for the muslim terrorist that commits crimes against the israelis on a daily basis!

Sean, your writing is a blessing, man. Keep up the good work.

    Occam's Tool on May 16, 2011 at 12:32 am

We have the spectacle of people mourning the existence of another country by threatening its existence.

People seriously believe Middle East peace is possible?

I have some homes in Majdal al Shams to sell you if you actually believe in that hokum.

Even President Obama’s Middle East envoy all but admitted with his resignation it is not going to happen this year.

NormanF on May 15, 2011 at 9:10 pm

Debbie, could you review more G stuff, please? Is African Cats any good?

Occam's Tool on May 16, 2011 at 12:33 am

Sean, the obese lady in Bridesmaids looks like Rosie O’Donnell. How you can find that attractive is beyond me.

DonkeyDonk on May 16, 2011 at 9:12 am

DonkeyDonk, since you mentioned Rosie O’Donnell, come to think of it, she does look a little like her, and Rosie O’Donnell is very unattractive (not because of her weight or her politics) looking.

But other plus-size women look alot better than Rosie O’Donnell, and there are some men who are attracted to plus-size women (that includes me), not all men are attracted to women who look like “stick-figure” with the body of a 10 year old child. To me that looks disgusting, one mans opinion. I prefer women with some weight on their body and voluptous looking!

Sean R. on May 16, 2011 at 10:08 am

Sean, you and I see eye to eye on this one when it comes to a woman’s looks. I too would much rather be with a woman with some “meat” on her and not some wafer thin stick that even my 5’6 frame could snap like a twig!

And if people don’t think there are big women out there that are pretty damn hot looking, then they’re blind or really shallow.

    Squirrel3D on May 16, 2011 at 2:17 pm

I’ll have to see “Bridesmaids.” There’s nothing wrong with a chick-bonding flick. Yes, it has its gross moments, as do almost all Judd Apatow-inspired comedies. So what? The whole point of humor, gross or otherwise, is to shoot holes through common pieties and pretentions. Plus Kristen Wiig is hot.

Seek on May 16, 2011 at 12:38 pm

the frau and i saw bridesmaids last night and it was hilarious…

howard roark on May 16, 2011 at 12:58 pm

Slightly off subject. I have been to two weddings in Texas and in both (high class affairs, lots of money) the women had to say that the man was the head of the marriage, house and their lives. The message that the woman was distinctly second class. Have you’all seen anything of this nature in your neck of the woods? (the religion was Methodist, they are usually liberal)

david7134 on May 16, 2011 at 9:08 pm

Bridesmaids was terrific. Debbie, you really need to get a sense of humor.

A: And you really need a brain . . . and some taste. DS

In a broad sense, Americans did torment the Native Americans.

They treated them the way most of the world treated the Jews for the past 2000 years.

But that only applies if you condemn a whole group of people for the actions of some.

Dances with Hooves on May 18, 2011 at 12:51 am

It’s clear anyone who liked bridesmaids is dumber than odumba. Women aren’t funny. Sorry gals.

Santorum2012 on May 19, 2011 at 7:20 am

I disagree with you on Bridesmaids. I thought it was hilarious.
