What to do When a Mosque Moves in Next Door: Free Speech Patriot of the Year

By Debbie Schlussel

Betcha anything the leaders and congregants of this mosque, the Jaffarya Center of Amherst, New York, won’t denounce HAMAS or Hezbollah.  They probably proudly support both groups.  And that’s why the First Amendment exercise of the mosque’s neighbor, Michael Hieck, is especially laudatory and fantastic.  Welcome to good, ole’ American Freedom of Speech, Muslims.  Sadly, I bet they wouldn’t allow this in Dearbornistan.  Only Swastikas and Hezbollah signs go there.

An angry upstate New York man says there’s not a prayer that he’ll remove a nasty sign prompted by a feud with the mosque next door.

“BOMB MAKING NEXT DRIVEWAY,” reads the stenciled message on the front lawn of Michael Heick.

The message outraged many residents of Amherst, a Buffalo suburb where Heick is upset by the Jaffarya Center’s proximity to his property and its bright lights.

The sign is more a poke at town officials than a political statement, he insisted. And local authorities can’t order him to take it down, because the message is protected by the First Amendment.

“The place is too close,” Heick griped to the Buffalo News. “I don’t care what people think. It doesn’t matter what people think.” . . .

Mosque officials complained the sign was offensive and could instigate trouble against its worshippers.

“I would really think it’s an incitement of hatred against Muslims,” said mosque board of trustees member Syed Jaffri.”

Really? How ’bout the incitement of hatred against Jews and Christians that you read in your Koran and Hadith, every single day? Will you denounce HAMAS and Hezbollah, Syed Jaffri? Probably not. But that’s who’s inciting hatred.

So pathetic that none of these mainstream media reporters have the guts to point those things out and ask him when he will denounce those.

Three cheers to Mr. Heick! I love his sign because, again, while they may not actually be building the bombs, I guarantee you they celebrate HAMAS’ and Hezbollah’s bombs and won’t condemn those.

I would add another sign, which reads:

HAMAS Martyrs Recruitment Center. Kill a Jew or Christian, go to Paradise.

People have died to preserve his right of free speech. Actually, however, it’s a case of his neighbors not being particularly useful.

By the way, I have yet to read of a recent attack on a Mosque by outraged Christians, Jews, or atheists.I went ahead and looked up the Wikipedia site on terrorist attacks 2010, figuring that any Mosque attacks on the US would definitely be listed in the left leaning Wikipedia.

There were none listed, and no Mosque attacks I could find on the web (not done by Muslims themselves, overseas. I don’t count Shia on Sunni violence here.) done by Christians or Jews.

Good stuff…I wanted to see how many of those big bad Christians and Jews strapped some bombs on and slaughtered countless numbers of people…hmmmm – couldnt find ONE case…but gee there were an awful lot of MUSLIMS in that group….wait, cant be – theyre the religion of Peace!

Outstanding action by Heick. Muslims think that they have First Amendment rights to their canonical texts (Sira, Hadith, Koran)? So do non-Nazi Americans.

I object to wikipedia as being characterized as “left leaning”. I am wikipedia. Extensively dominated by “Liberals”, yes…no wait…they are the same.

I agree with Mr. Heick, he’s entitled to keep that sign up on his property, this is still the UNITED STATES of AMERICA to muslims and you muslim apologist-dhimmi’s (mainly leftist and some rightist).

To Syed Jaffri, are you going to denounce and condemn what the koran says about christians, jews, and other infidels? The koran claims that jews, christians, etc. are pigs, and other vile and disgusting words under the sun, and also wages jihad on infidels (us non-muslims and muslims who are anti-islam). Mr. Jaffri, this is the USofA, we all are entiteled to our own 1st amendment rights, and Mr. Heick is exercising and taking advantage of it! Also Mr. Jaffri, the 1st amendment is to protect speech that you find offensive, hateful, hurtful, tasteless, etc., we DO NOT need any type of amendment within the bill of rights to protect speech that you love, and our founding fathers decided that when they wrote the US constitution after the American Revolutionary war in 1776. Just keep that in mind all of you ignorant muslims, and also you ignorant left wingers as well!

For 13 years I lived in Tompkinsville on Staten Island (actually Ward Hill, but nobody refers to it as that any more). Whenever anyone would ask where in Thompkinsville I would say “Across from the Bomb Factory” (One of the largest mosques in NYC is on Victory Blvd in Tomkinsville). People usually looked at me a bit confused at first until I explained “You know, the mosque”. I always enjoyed that.

Had I not been renting I was going to hang an Isreali Flag outside on the rear of my kitchen in full view of the parking lot of that mosque. Sorry I never did, although I am sure my landlords would have had a problem with it and that wasn’t worth the rewards of pissing off the bomb makers.

Too bad this country (along with the conservative movement) is always too slow to respond. Islam is winning and barring a huge cultural change here in America we are lost.

John on May 13, 2011 at 4:54 pm

John, you also have to wonder that it’s not just liberals, leftist/progressives who are pandering backwards to islam, it’s also some conservatives who also are pandering to islam.

Nowadays, pandering to islam is non-partisan, and the response is always a little too slow. Now I also want to know when CAIR and other pressure groups are going to go after Mr. Heick for holding a sign up at his property and exercising his 1st amendment right(s)?

I love his sign! Made my day to see this picture.

Today I saw a stunning 15 minute video exposing radical Islamist leaders in Nashville, TN, who have been accepted as moderates and embraced by that city’s civic and religious leaders and media.

The video shows a prominent Nashville Muslim leader indoctrinating Vanderbilt University students and Nashville mosque members with his extremist and anti-American views.

The exposed radicals were able to gain teaching positions at Vanderbilt and Tennessee State University, where they indoctrinated students in hatred for America, Jews and Christians.

Nashville’s progressive rabbis and the religion reporter for the city’s major daily played major roles in giving these radical hate teachers good housekeeping seals that allowed them to pass as moderates. I know that Debbie has exposed these types repeatedly but I will never comprehend the absolute stupidity and hypocrisy of such sacroreligious imbeciles as these so-called rabbi’s.

This film is based on a six-month investigation, and features actual lectures by Vanderbilt’s Muslim chaplain and spokesman of the new Islamic Center of Tennessee, Awadh Binhazim, which include extremist, hateful and at times bizarre teachings.

Among these:
1.Muslims should work to institute Sharia Law in the U.S.
2.Muslims should not become Westernized and must confront the West.
3.The Torah and the Bible have been falsified by corrupt rabbis and priests.
4.Islam doesn’t allow for personal choice.
5.Islam demands that homosexuals be put to death.
6.Muslims discovered America before Columbus.

#6 is actually hilarious!

“Our investigation,” Jacobs said, “established that Mr. Binhazim’s non-profit organization, Olive Tree Education, had until 2007 promoted on its website the writings of Anwar Al Awlaki, the Yemeni-based Al Qaeda leader who’s had a hand in the Fort Hood shooting, the Christmas Day attempted airline bombing over Detroit, and the attempted Times Square bombing.”

Olive Tree’s Outreach Director Amar Razali promotes Awlaki as an Islamic scholar “Of Exemplary Level”on his blog to this day.

“Alarmingly,” Jacobs said,”Mr. Binhazim and other leaders of the Islamic Center of Nashville mosque are promoted and legitimized by Nashville’s interfaith leaders, government officials, and media outlets.”

I have disagree here. I agree with most of the criticisms of Islam that have been posted here (and I can add additional criticisms myself). HOWEVER, bomb-making is a felony – a very serious felony. It seems to me that sign could be slander. It’s the same as if he put up a sign saying “child molesting is taking place next door”

I’d applause a sign that pointed out the legitimate dangers of Islam such as Sharia Law, hatred of the West,anti-Semitism, approval of terrorism, etc. But I don’t believe the 1st amendment allows slander.

S: He has nothing to worry about. The sign is clearly humorous, made in jest. He’s covered. If they sued him, I’d represent him (provided I could find a NY licensed attorney to make a motion to have me admitted pro hac vice–for the purposes of representing him in that case). . . and win. They have no case here. DS

Scott on May 13, 2011 at 7:15 pm

I’m not an attorney, but I believe Scott is correct about Heick’s sign. It’s better to cite some of the many Islamic teachings that threaten us all and that are almost certainly being promulgated at the mosque than to accuse the local Muslims of criminal activity, which could easily lead to a lawsuit. It’s far wiser to post a sign that says, for example: “Islam teaches that Christians and Jews should have to pay a tax from which Muslims are exempt, and to do so in a state of humiliation” or “Islam teaches that Christians and Jews are blasphemers” or “Islam teaches that polytheists, such as Hindus, should be killed if they do not convert to Islam,” or “Islam allows enslavement and rape of women.” These assertions should be backed up by citing specific passages in the Koran or in the hadith collections which are the basis for such statements, as opposed to making presumptions about alleged criminal activity within the mosque.

commonsense on May 13, 2011 at 11:18 pm

Debbie: Even if the mosque does not have a case, this will not necessarily deter the Muslims there, or elsewhere, from filing a lawsuit, with the intent to hurt the defendant financially and intimidate him. There is no guarantee that Heick can find a lawyer who will represent him pro bono or at a rate he can afford, and even if there is a verdict in his favor, the plaintiffs may well appeal, or resort to other legal tactics calculated to keep Heick in protracted litigation, ruining him financially. I maintain that what he’s doing is leaving him vulnerable to courtroom jihad. Let’s not forget that these Muslims have access to virtually unlimited funds, courtesy of Saudi Arabia and wealthy Muslims already here who have prospered from the opportunities our country has afforded them.

commonsense on May 15, 2011 at 2:28 pm

People have the right to denounce Islam. Once Sharia is imposed here, things will be very different.

Incidentally Barry Rubin points the huge anti-Israel crowds that turned out in Egypt today are the young, hip, Facebook crowds that drove the Egyptian revolution back in February.

They may look and dress like us but they are very extreme in their hatred of the Jews, Israel and America.

What Michael Hieck is doing is very mild and he is not calling for any one’s death. Why the outrage?

Again, why does Islam need protection? I’d sure love to know!

NormanF on May 13, 2011 at 7:16 pm

The muslim spokesman is worried it may be an “incitement to hatred”. Boy, they’ve really learned the PC lingo well. So in other words, if you say something they don’t like, you may be responsible for ANOTHER person’s actions. I guess then you can be sued civilly.

David Lanham on May 14, 2011 at 1:13 am

Laughing at the sign, but “commonsense” is correct. Let them justify the koran on nonmuslim passages.

Laughing at them seems to make the sputter in indignation and unable to live with the truth. Islam is a relegion of full of hate.

Remember when we laughed at ethnic jokes about every nationality, religion, and backgroud. Lets start on the hypocrisy of this religion.

viewfromarockingchair on May 14, 2011 at 8:30 pm

I read recently that (thankfully) tourism in Egypt is way way down and with no tourist money coming in their budget problems put the US’s to shame. So let’s hope everything collapses there right quick.

luagha on May 14, 2011 at 9:04 pm

The sign makes a point in a humorous way. The Jaffarya Center should explain why it is not like other groups, since their co-religionists here and abroad engage in terrorism and other pretty heinous activities. Is it really obligatory for victims of Islam to parse each and every entity which proclaims itself to be Islamic before expressing their suspicions or fear? Rather, is it not the Jaffarya Center’s responsibility to do so after all that has happened over the years? Would anyone assume that a “former” gang member would achieve immediate social acceptance simply by not openly engaging in criminal activities? Dormancy does not equal innocence. Also, fear and prudence are not the equivalent of common decency and empathy when discussing a group’s lack of militant activity in Islam. In the end, we are judged by our thoughts, words, and deeds, and not simply by our deeds(actions). A man may think or even say that he wishes to kill or harm his wife, but never carries out this intention. Does this failure to act represent virtue, or simply a cowardice on the part of a husband who fears the consequences of such an act? This man is not repentant and sorrowful for his thoughts and words, but simply calculates that satisfying his desires would lead to consequences that would exceed any transitory emotional benefit. If a situation arose where carrying out such a crime would entail little or no risk to the perpetrator, as in a natural disaster, remote location, or ocean cruise, this calculation of self-interest would bear another answer.

worry01 on May 15, 2011 at 4:47 am

This is ridiculous. First, no where on the man’s sign does he mention the Muslims or their mosque. He does not give an address, AND there is a driveway on both sides of his property. So, the Muslims are simply assuming by their OWN sense of guilt the sign is referring to them.
We are getting quite tired of PC protecting every sick, depraved statement that issues from the followers of Islam virtually every day, directed at Christians and Jews. And these words of hatred and filth are protected by the ACLU, CAIR, Jesse Jackson, AL Sharpton, JIMMIE CARTER, B.H. Obama…as long as it is Jews and Christians who are attacked, it seems the entire world is ok with it. But let one man , Christian or Jew fight back, and all hell breaks loose!
I say, Fight Back, Christians and Jews! We have had enough!!

Christian Granny on May 15, 2011 at 6:56 pm

Kudos to Mike Heick for what he did!!! If slander is an issue, change it to ‘Terrorist ideology taught here’ or something along those lines, to make it more accurate. As for Muzzies, they’ll sue, regardless of whether or not they have a case.

It’s not just the bombmaking or the recruitments. A mosque is nothing like a church, a synagogue, a Buddhist monestary, a Hindu temple: they have to play full blast w/ loudspeakers, from their minarets, the ‘call for prayer’ – the muezzin, 5 times a day, including @ odd hours like 4am. If one is a light sleeper or has other sleeping difficulty, imagine being woken up by that ugly sound @ that unearthly hour!

Regardless of the original purpose, the fact remains that Muslims who live in the vicinity today can set their alarms or other such reminders, and go there, w/o disturbing anybody else. But that’s not the only thing this is for. It’s for reminding all Muslims, whether they take it seriously or not, to get ready to pray. And it also gives the entire locality the aura of being a Muslim area, regardless of how many Muslims may actually reside there. In practice, it gets followed by more Muzzies settling in the area, and crime going up, property values going down, and so on.

If this was on Mr Heick’s personal property, what he did was a stroke of genius, and the city has no business telling him squat. Like Samurai, I hope that Mr Heick is a 2nd Amendment supporter as well and owns a gun, since there will be enough Muslims out to kill him.
