WTF?!: Dearbornistan Jury Requires Terry Jones to Pay “Peace Bond” to Hold Protest; Bond is $1; Jones Refuses to Pay, Arrested!

By Debbie Schlussel

It’s official.  We’ve lost America.  A Dearbornistan jury just found (at about 6:42 p.m.) that Pastor Terry Jones must pay a “peace bond” of thousands of dollars in order to hold his planned protest in front of the Islamic Center of America mosque in Dearbornistan. But District Court Judge Mark Somers charged Jones only $1 in bond, which he’s refused to pay, and has now been arrested and put in jail. Huh? I told you Jones wanted to be a martyr. But he shouldn’t even have to pay $1. Free speech is free, thus the adjective in front of the word, “speech.”

As I write this, it is just over two hours AFTER the time that Jones was to hold his protest, but, instead, he’s been on trial for prior speech and future speech in one of the most unconstitutional trials I’ve ever seen (I watched much of it on live feed broadcast over the net).  The protest was to take place at 5:00 p.m. Eastern, today, and now that won’t happen, as the judge, Judge Mark Somers, just returned to set the amount of the bond. He set it at $1, which Jones refused to pay, so he’s been arrested and put in jail.  The whole thing is one humongous outrage.

Jones had said he would come back and hold his protest, originally planned for today, next week.  And, again, it’s clear to me, he just wants to be a martyr.  Neither he nor a colleague from his church who was also on trial today wanted to poll the individual members of the jury.  The judge repeatedly offered them to preserve several objections for appeal,  appeals they likely would have won, ultimately.  But they declined each time.  They didn’t want to win this.  They just wanted to be martyrs, and it sets a bad precedent for the rest of us. And with their refusal to pay even the $1 bond, that’s clear, even if it is out of principle. Still, they shouldn’t have been required to pay one red cent. And the fact they were arrested for refusing to pay is an outrage. I wish I could represent them, but alas, the Jewish Sabbath is about to start for me.

Regardless of the small amount of bond the judge imposed, it’s a very sad day in America that there was a trial at all, and more so, that a jury said you have to pay for the privilege of exercising your First Amendment speech rights if you burn a Koran.  Say good-bye to our freedoms, slowly but surely. Free speech is no longer free, even if a judge says you only have to pay $1.

I recall from somewhere…maybe holy scripture, that Patrick Henry’s exact words were “Give me librium or give me meth.”

Terry Jones has successfully exposed the politics in Dearborn by demonstration.

He’s (TJ) the artful dodger, allowing the ship to sink itself for all the world to witness, then jumping on a plane and heading South.

McDhimmi, your anti-Schlussel cyphers are lame.

And you’re not contributing anything to this thread.

Islam is a very real threat to our freedom. What happened in that court Friday sir, is not a figment of our imagination.

This kind of reminds me of the pictographic puzzles that were under the bottle caps on plain wrap beer. Anyone else remember those?

Jones had his Civil Rights violated and now is due damages. A total disregard of the Constitution by these nutcase prosecutors. Will there be a federal investigation of this matter? If Blacks or Muslims were jailed based on intent rather than execution of a crime all hell would break out.

Terry Jones needs an astute attorney like Debbie Schlussel to guide him, otherwise our country is toast – literally & physically. My namesake made $Millions$ illegally from the pockets of Islam, until he too was physically set aside shortly before FBI was going to grab him.

“MG”: Unfortunately for him, he hired crappy, incompetent attorneys at the anti-Semitic, hypocritical Thomas More Law Center. They deserve each other, as they are phony and in this for the money, just like Terry Jones is. DS

Real courage in the face of Islam is rare.

Let’s sum it up: we have to respect them but they don’t have to respect us.

    That about says it all.

To karen naim:

peace and respect: The Koran are two books, both written by Mohammad. The first may purport peace but the second, which few get around to reading and it was written after Mohammad married his 6 year old wife, promotes killing all infidels and all non-believers of the Koran. Nothing more, nothing less, don’t forget it.

So if you don’t believe and practice the Koran, you could be next to be dead.

Dear Debbie,

You’re right. Now what? What can anyone do about this aside from avoiding the smell? File a lawsuit, write letters to the judge…?

Where is the ACLU? They saw fit to defend the right of neo-Nazis to hold a rally in Skokie, IL in spite of the presence of many Holocaust survivors. The fact that such a rally would cause unrest, disruption and emotional pain to the citizens of Skokie didn’t bother them. The fact that neo-Nazis openly support a declared enemy of the United States (aka Adolph Hitler) didn’t bother the ACLU.

You would think the ACLU would defend Pastor Jones. He might be a nutty guy, but certainly no worse than neo-Nazis.

Are all the lawyers scared to take this case? Maybe their personal safety and lust for future money on less contensious cases keeps them away from Terry Jones and the future of the USA.

To Skunky, Julie Michael & Amy, First skunky, I am american, born and raised, happily married, mom to many and secure in my role as teacher of right and wrong to my children. I do get it, I see that it could have been handled differently but wasn’t. Do I agree with the prosecutors office, not for a minute. They should have just allowed the pig to speak and let him go away. Now, he wants to sue us, represented by an ambulance chasing law firm out of Ann Arbor. Yeah, he will probably win and we will pay for it. But, after all is said and done, we dearborn residents will go back to the way we always have been. Living happily amongst our neighbors from all over the world, PEACEFULLY. Julie, I didn’t say anyone had to be held to a higher standard than a child. Muslims in Dearborn have done nothing wrong. The majority of muslims here work hard, own businesses, pay taxes, send their children to school and are deeply religious. Again, we all live here Peacefully. We get along. We have the same common interest. Michael, yes, I have read both, she was 9, she was married at that age ,by her father, if you have read even one, you would know that marriages were made then for political purposes, allegiances with tribes etc. she was 9, she didn’t have sex at 9, she was promised to him at that age. Alot of other cultures have done the same for centuries. What about the Romanians, Greeks, Jews???? Amy, whoever you are, thanks but no thanks, you make the rest of us with brains look stupid. So, Debbie’s a Jew! Big deal, are we not all allowed to have our opinions however we worship. People, that was my point all along. Respect for your fellow man. Peace, love and happiness to all.

Since when is calling attention to the murderous-dictatorial nature of Islamic jihad ‘controversial’?

It must be the mustache.
