American Spectator Cites Koran, NYTimes’ Kristof, Friedman on Islam; “Muslims Peaceful, Not Jew-Haters”

By Debbie Schlussel

Who needs the liberal, lying New York Times, when you can read the American Spectator citing the liberal, lying New York Times Tom Friedman and Israel-hating, pan-Muslim Nicholas Kristof as ultimate authorities in the Mid-East?  Oh, and by the way, who needs CAIR Action Network and the Koran, when the American Spectator is now citing the Koran as proof Muslims aren’t violent?  Yes, really, the American Spectator is now lecturing us from the Koran and the writings of Nicholas Kristof and Thomas Friedman.

islamiccrescent.jpg

The American Spectator, back in the day, was respected by conservatives as a fun, insightful, irreverent magazine that was not only conservative, but also pro-Israel and saw the light on the Islamic threat.  My late father used to enjoy subscribing, but was dismayed by the fact that editor R. Emmett Tyrell happily employed the openly anti-Semitic Joseph Sobran (whose father was reportedly a Nazi; Sobran’s one of Ann Coulter’s idols), Pat Buchanan (whose mother was a German supporter of the Nazis), and Taki Theodoracopulos as columnists (and despite the fact that the creepy Tyrrell was rumored to have had dalliances with female liberal media forces).  But, now, the magazine is no longer relevant.  And it’s not only jumped the shark, it’s welcomed on board a number of liars, fabricators, and out-and-out morons to write for it.  You just can’t believe anything you read there (and I rarely read it because I prefer fiction with a better plot and far better writing).  The Sobran/Buchanan/Taki multi-orgasmic view of the Islamic world and denial of anti-Semitism has taken over the place.

That might explain why Spectator “writers” are now citing the Koran and  doing the bidding of the CAIR Action Network, in lecturing us that Muslims aren’t violent because the Koran says so.  That might also explain why the site is now denying that the attack on Lara Logan–in which Muslim assaulters shouted, “Jew! Jew!”–is anti-Semitic.  And it might explain why the incompetent writers and propagandists who now populate the stench there are reporting as “fact” that the Logan assailants were “Mubarak thugs,” when there’s absolutely no evidence.  In fact, they link to a report from CBS as proof, when the CBS report says no such thing.  Apparently, the American Spectator geek squad is not only stupid, but blind.  I guess they missed the many anti-Israel signs in Tahrir Square.

John Guardiano, some “analyst” (always a BS title) I never heard of, cites the Koran and the New York Times’ Thomas Friedman and Nicholas Kristof (fan of Islamic terrorist Sami Al-Arian and all things Muslim), as his arbiters of truth. Frickin’ hilarious.  And, oh, so sad.  Now, the left-wing Israel-haters of the uber-liberal New York Times are the ones AmSpec looks to for fact? Then, why read the American Spectator, when you can read the Times in the first place? Hey, maybe next, the Spectator will cite Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi. I hear Keith Olbermann might not be happy with his new gig. Perhaps he should call John Guardiano with the facts. Check this “wisdom” from this moron:

Some on the Right are trying to discredit the protesters with unfair and unwarranted charges of misogyny and anti-Semitism.

But in fact, we can say with near certainty that the thugs who violently abused and violated Logan were anti-protesters sent into the streets by Mubarak precisely in order to disrupt and discredit the Egyptian uprising. . . .

Egyptians are not asking for Palestine or for Allah. They are asking for the keys to their own future, which this regime took away from them. They are not inspired by “down with” America or Israel. They are inspired by “Up with Egypt” and “Up with me.” . . .

And these were not “Muslims” who did this (chapter 5, verse 2 of the Qur’an says: “do not let your hatred of a people incite you to aggression”). These were barbarians.

He quotes with approval extensive portions of both New York Times’ lefty Friedman and anti-Israel/pan-Islamic Kristof’s columns. Yeah, that’s who I trust on the Middle East . . . only if I’m a moron.  Ditto for the Koran.

As his proof that the 200 Muslims who attacked Logan were operatives of Mubarak, Guardiano cites some Kapo token Spectator Jew, Aaron Goldstein. Goldstein’s “proof” that the attackers were Mubarak “thugs masquerading as protesters”? Well, he links to the terse CBS statement announcing the assault–a statement which says no such thing, doesn’t mention Mubarak, and says absolutely nothing he claims.

It’s bad enough that one of the Specator’s most prolific bloggers is the creepy Robert Stacy McCain, who used to e-mail me in the middle of the night, sending me disgusting photos of himself coming out of a pool in a Speedo bikini (warning:  ick!).   But, now, it’s not just creepiness that’s infected the American Spectator.

It’s the Koran and the New York Times’ most liberal columnists . . .  now the ultimate authorities at creepy Bob Tyrrell’s magazine.

My late father is turning over in his grave.  And wanting his money back from the many times he contributed to R. Emmett Tyrrell’s pleas to help keep this abominable publication going.

Debbie,

John is being countered by another writer in the AmSpec, which happens to be fairly pro-Israel and no longer publishes Taki, or Pat Buchanan. Giardiano is also not anti-Israel, he’s simply Pollyannish on this issue.

OC: Stop making excuses. The fact that they published this garbage at all negates any “countering.” That’s a total BS excuse. Is it a conservative publication that is pro-Israel or is it a forum for all views? You can’t have it both ways. Taki and Buchanan wrote for AmSpec for decades. That they were finally dumped is no excuse for the decades the Bob Tyrrell welcomed those Nazis with open arms. I’m appalled that you’d make excuses for this. Guardiano isn’t “Pollyannish.” He’s an Islam-apologist and fan of far-left liberals from the New York Times, one of whom is openly anti-Israel and a fan of Islamic terrorists like Sami Al-Arian. Wake up, man. DS

Fair ’nuff. But I still like Aaron. OK, so John’s an idjit. Tyrrell isn’t perfect. But he still publishes George Gilder quite a bit, for example.

Your intensity is inspiring. Guess I’m just tired.

And I have noted that the writing isn’t as good as it was when I was a college kid. Hmmmm…maybe time to cancel.

      Occam's Tool on February 17, 2011 at 9:43 pm

It doesn’t matter if they do other pieces that may have good conservative content; if they display anti-Semitism, or excuse Islam, then it’s not “American Spectator”, it’s “American Defecator”!

CornCoLeo on February 17, 2011 at 1:23 pm

Like I said… bad as the Left is – parts of the Right have also been taken over by Islamists.

My guess is the once great American Spectator is where you get many of those seminar e-mails from. Its not just lefties who are clueless morons about Islam.

We can now add a publication that like National Review, once had better days.

NormanF on February 17, 2011 at 1:24 pm

Debbie – I disagree with how you keep referring to Muslims as “new Nazis.” There is nothing new about them – remember they literally WERE Nazis back in WWII.

H: Try my archives. I’ve written plenty about how they were the original Nazis. But just because they were part of the original, doesn’t preclude me from calling them “the new Nazis,” too. DS

Hopewell on February 17, 2011 at 1:37 pm

This is why I love you, Deb. You believe in two things so uncommon in journalistic circles these days…facts and truth.

First, the remark that these people do not care about anything but their government. I heard on an all news station (WTOP) an interview with a female protestor who stated, “First we get rid of Mubarak and next we free Palestine.” There were anti-Israel and anti-American signs in the crowd. One of the main agitators and beneficiaries of the overthrow of Mubarak is the Islamic Brotherhood, which hates not just Israel, but Jews anywhere. Just like Hitler wanted all Jews dead, so goes the Islamic Brotherhood.

Now, let’s turn to the rape of Lara Logan.

Up to the attack on Lara Logan, there were other sexual assaults taking place during the demonstrations. They were not by Mubarak’s people, but by others in the crowd. That is why Ms. Logan had a contingent of security people around her. However, the press, as to not offend the partial owners of their various networks and stations, made no mention of these sexual assaults. They merely covered up the violence by the crowd, because they wanted to continue to portray Islam in a wonderful light.

Of course, just ask the acid damaged faces of the girls in Afghanistan whose only crimes were attending schools to read and write about how Islam treats women. Ask the Filipina slaves, err, I mean maids in Saudia Arabia who have been raped repeatedly about how Islam treats women. Ask the women in Pakistan who are not even allowed on public streets about how Islam treats women (yes, I know about Bhutto being Prime Minister, but most women there are not allowed to be without a male relative, and only when covered from head to toe in a chador).

In 1967, when the Egyptians were planning to drive Israel into the sea, the Egyptian Official radio broadcasts told Israeli women to get themselves ready to entertain the Egyptian troops.

Going back further, in 1929, the Jewish community of Hebron, which had existed for thousands of years, was attacked without provocation. Virtually every single woman was attacked and raped, and then mutilated and murdered.

As I stated before, some will say Christianity is no better than Islam. You are wrong. Jesus never told his followers to rape and murder in his name or in the name of the Lord. Was violence perpetrated in the name of Christianity? Absolutely. Jews were treated like garbage. However, the religion never taught hatred, only those that miscontrued Jesus’ words.

Now, contrast that with Mohammed. He was an angry, twisted illiterate, who married and had sex with an eight year old. He preached hatred. He taught that a lie was acceptable to trick people into a peace, whereupon you could lull them into a surprise attack. He taught that you could rape your enemies wives and children. He taught that others who were not Muslims were lesser people. That is essential to the religion of Islam.

Wake up, and think for yourselves. Read the unedited (not the heavily sweet, edited version taught to public school children) translation of the Koran and other holy books of Islam. It is nothing but a dangerous cult that teaches the hatred, degredation, and murder of “non-believers.”

Modern terrorism was begun by Muslims. And no, contrary to the journalism reports, Menachem Begin never targeted civilians, and gave a 15 minute warning to British prior to the explosion of the military headquarters at the King David headquarters. He was not a terrorist. He, nor any of the other Jews, targeted civilians, unlike the Arabs did in Hebron, or Safed in 1929, or in Jerusalem in 1929 or 1948 or at the various kibbutzim throughout Israel’s history.

Before some of you get soft on Arabs, remember 9/11. Remember the killing of the British, the Spanish, the French, and the Germans and Russians by Islamic terrorists. Remember the terrorist attacks in the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, China, Argentina, India, etc., etc. that targeted civilians.

Wake up.

I’ve long ceased to rate journals or organizations based on whether or not they are Conservative or Liberal. That made sense during the Cold War and pre- 9/11, but certainly not since. I judge them purely on whether or not they are pro or anti Muslim.

In fact, I’m willing to entertain Liberal journals or organizations if they are right on just one thing: Muslims (& Islam!) If I see one that is on the same side as us on this one issue, it won’t matter so much that they may be totally opposed to me on Taxes, Regulations, guns, trade, school choice, etc. Reason being that not just the GOP, but so much of the Conservative movement has been contaminated by pro Muslim advocacy that we just can’t afford to be choosy any more.

pea-brain poster clint essentially makes my point.

I chalk it up to simple economics.

The proliferation of the internet is crushing, replacing traditional forms of media namely newspapers, magazines, and so fourth.

The financial pressure to monetize on-line operations are critical to the survival of “existing” media. And survival and profit appears to trump adhearance to philosophy.

In this case, the anti Israel, Jew hatred, koran peaceful, blame it on Mubarak regime, fits into many widely used narratives that certainly have their believers. Search Engine Optimization(SEO) whores understand the power and use of stearing traffic.

I think it all boils down to a conscious decision on the part of the AS to go ahead and “take in” some of the traffic that will throw the key stroke to go to the site reguardless of whether or not it is right, true, or conservative…its a money decision.

Cite some examples of (“Loud mouthed,”ignorant” Jew drag-queens are so fucking annoying. If you CAN NOT prove her wrong, then we all must conclude she is right. In that case GO F.CK yourself. Obviously the fact she is Jewish is another problem you have with her. Please cite some facts on how that is important.

Now you also called her a Drag Queen. Please post a recent photo of yourself, so we can see what your idea of an attractive Drag Queen is.

The article suffered from cut & paste and really is a gray piece that doesn’t say anything new, nor does it really in the end, make a point. AmSpec’s editors should’ve sent the writer back into the field to try again.

The ME for the most part (Israel excepted), has a problem with women, western, or their own.

I like AmSpec really. Blame the editors for being lazy.

P. Aaron on February 17, 2011 at 2:44 pm

I haven’t looked at the AmSpec for years. It’s irrelevant. Bottom line is that it’s hard to find a right-thinking publication of any kind these days. The NR is fairly squishy. I cancelled my subscription to the WSJ. Got tired of the Islamopandering. I don’t watch Fox News. Contentions is confused (see Alana Goodman, ridiculous dupe). I won’t read the Weekly Standard with Kristol in charge. I won’t touch Townhall as long as Pat Buchanan is there.

Aside from Debbie, I read Melanie Phillips, Caroline Glick, Michael Totten, Michael Ledeen, Bruce Bawer and Mark Steyn.

Curious, I know Kristoff and know of Kristoff, who he hung out with to get ahead, what he did to get ahead, how he made his name in the East, China, how he sold out, how he put others in mortal danger with his reporting and blamed it on other journalists, time and time again, how he used Americans with serious psychiatric and drug issues (but lots of trust fund money hanging out in the East, who also sold out), who hated America with a vitriol that was ahead of its time. I know what he did in places like Hong Kong and India and China and Pakistan back in the 80’s and 90’s… yes, I know Kristoff very well, and he fits into the NYTimes very well.. no one has ever outed him… he walks a very fine line, but he is extraordinarily racist, and plays that racism well. Whatever he writes: Consider the source.

Anna on February 17, 2011 at 5:44 pm

Playing both sides against the middle: One of the early things Krisoff did in his career was understand that without money he was going nowhere, and information parlayed to the wrong people brought in more money/bargaining positions than information provided to support freedom of the press and true US democracy. E.g., He sold a particular ethnic group fighting for human rights down the drain, pretending to be so pro-democracy, and supporting democracy in China, he used to feed intellgence information to others to feed to other government agents, e.g., Islamic influences in the Far East. So fact gathering trips through “Asia” ostensibly funded and resourced to present to human rights groups, lo and behold – would end up in “other governmental places” first, to be handled. They were observed, and considered traitors to the people they were claiming to help.

Anna on February 17, 2011 at 5:56 pm

So when a “journalist” spends a liftime selling out, this is part of the way they are expected to payback. By writing the enemy’s propaganda. He’s had long long practice.

Magazines have gotten so bad that we forget sometimes that the purpose of a political magazine is to enlighten, not to have excuses made for it. If excuses need to be made for it, it is not worth reading, because it does not enlighten.

Needless to say, if it supports enemies of an enlightened society, such as Muslims, it does the opposite of enlightening.

Little Al on February 17, 2011 at 6:13 pm

Great article Debbie.

To you ASpec types: Did you ever heard of abnegation? Islam makes a distinction between the Medina and Mecca periods of Muhammad. Can you guess which period the Muslims Favor?

Doc Holiday on February 17, 2011 at 7:37 pm

Yup. Islamic jurisprudence holds if verses in the Koran contradict each other, the later verses supersede the earlier ones.

The Koran became fanatical and extreme after Mohammed triumphed over his enemies and felt strong enough that he longer needed to practice taquiyyah and pretend moderation to win them over. This is historically how Islam has behaved.

It is moderate when its weak and extremist when it is strong. The logic of Muslim mind works in the opposite direction from that of the Western one and without exception they always view the Western desire to compromise and engage them as a sign of weakness.

They don’t compromise with their own domestic opponents. In Libya, the regime ran over protesters with a fire truck and in Bahrain they shot sleeping demonstrators dead with live ammunition. This is the real Islam when no one is watching them.

NormanF on February 17, 2011 at 8:15 pm

Lots of faux-Conservatives are stepping out with their faux-Conservatives ways a lot lately. I love it when I smell the first whiff of dhimmitude and hypocrisy and a Lefty point of view from them…the stench always tells the evntual truth.

Kristof is the consommate archetype of a hypocritical Liberal. True Conservatives know what a (ahem) skunk he is. I just wish I was a butterfly-on-a-wall when his Lefty commrades are betrayed by that odious butt-munch, professionally and personally. It’s like the sun coming up and going down (Liberal hypocrisy) each day…you know it’s gonna happen, you just have to wait for it. When Liberals are hoist by their own petard is what warms my heart most!

This is why we come here. I know DS knows her stuff (from Stern show), I know it’s a rare person who knows it like she does and I know we are gonna get the truth here. I like that we learn what Conservatives should be smoked out from here. If we don’t like that crap from the Left, why would we want our side to do the same?

Sellouts. Bill O’Reilly, Michael Smerconish, John Batchelor, Michael Medved, Charles Gasparino and so, so, so many others. I want to know who the hell they are!

Skunky on February 17, 2011 at 10:47 pm

Who is Tom Friedman?

I realize he’s a columnist for the NEW YORK TIMES, but beyond that, who is Tom Friedman? What makes his opinion any more important than anyone else?

I don’t get it! Tom Friedman says: “Israel should…” and everybody gets their panties in a bunch.

There are over 2 million homeless people in Cairo. If a few thousand Egyptians protest against government corruption and poverty, there’s a million men “on call” to join in. It takes a LIB media to tell us that it’s a “Democracy movement”.

Everybody is trying to push their own political agenda out of mass discontent driven by POVERTY and CORRUPTION. I’m not talking about mere economic hardship like we experience here in the United States. I’m talking about POVERTY accompanied by homelessness, malnutrition and squalor. While the elites of the Muslim world plunder the entire world via the OPEC cartel, these people bear witness to massive corruption while they suffer in extreme poverty. It doesn’t take much to get them to gather together and address their poverty. They have nowhere to go and nothing else to do.

Mubarak has resigned and the Egyptian protests should have died out by now. Now Egypt’s middle classes have joined the fray. Do you know why? I can tell you: A captain in the Egyptian army enjoys a better standard of living than an Egyptian physician. I kid you not! This situation exists throughout the Muslim world where the military plunders and the middle classes get the leftover crumbs.

Any news media “columnist” with half a brain knows this but they won’t tell you about it. That’s because it’s easier to blame the world’s favorite scapegoat: The Jews.

Even in oil rich OPEC nations, people are getting tired of the hoarding of wealth by their country’s elite. While anti-Semitism is manifest in these Islamic cultures, I can’t help but notice that the primary focus of the public protest is NOT against Israel, but rather the ruling elite of these countries.

Perhaps, we’re seeing a certain wisdom starting to grip these Muslim nations, but the LIB media doesn’t want to tell us that. Rather, they want us to continue to believe what President O’Bama does: the key to ending strife in the Islamic world is a settlement between Israel and Palestinian Arabs. Well don’t look now, but the masses protesting in the streets aren’t advocating for the Fakestinians. They’re protesting against the corrupt elite of their respective countries for hoarding the wealth of their nations and leaving them with NOTHING; no economic growth, no jobs, no homes, no clean water, no wastewater services, no food, no nuthin’. They live in their own excrement with nothing to do and nowhere to go except a Mosque where they’re told that it’s all “the Jews” fault.

I don’t discount the manifest anti-Semitism that permeates these societies, but I have a feeling that the people protesting in the streets are getting wise to who is really responsible for their poverty. Therefore Debbie, if you don’t mind me thinking outside the box a little, allow me to advance the thesis that what’s going on in the Muslim world may not be all bad.

When the rage is focused on the government and ruling elites, it’s not focused on Danish cartoons, “the Jews”, flushing Korans down the toilet (Remember that one?) and all that other crap our LIB media has thrown at us all these years. Unfortunately, old habits die hard and the LIB news media can’t report about anything in the Muslim world without their knee-jerk response of “But what about Israel?”. In my humble opinion, that thesis is old, tired and irrelevant to what I’m observing.

I’m not arguing against your thesis regarding the nature of Islam. I’m just saying that in addition to this, Muslim regimes have been ignoring the internal economic development of their respective countries for decades and the people are fed up with it. If you listen close enough, what these Muslims are really saying is: “It’s the POVERTY and CORRUPTION, stupid!”

That begs the question: Is it ALL bad?

There is NO Santa Claus on February 17, 2011 at 11:06 pm

Skunky, wishful thinking is a powerful aspect of human nature. We’d like to believe every one shares our values and wants freedom and democracy.

That’s not true in the Middle East today any more than it was true in Weimar Germany in the early 1930s.

When you follow what is behind the events there – the best organized, popular and extreme elements are the Islamists. True liberal parties are weak to non-existent in the Arab Muslim World. To extrapolate from this – if democracies arise in the Arab World, they will be extreme anti-American and anti-Israel. That after all represents the true feelings of the masses and any leaders who emerge from them will give them what they want.

What we are not going to see there is an American or European style secular democracy but at the best along the lines of the Turkish AKP Islamist regime – that is rabidly anti-American and anti-Israel. That example alone should disabuse people of the notion there is such a creature as a “moderate” Islamist. Nope – they are all the same. And even the Russians, not exactly friends of America, are alarmed at what is going on over there.

The Sultan Knish – Daniel Greenfield wrote tonight that what is likely to result in Egypt is either a military dictatorship or a Muslim Brotherhood dictatorship. Whatever the final shape of the regime that emerges there is going to be – its going to be nothing like the one projected for it by moronic MSM reporters and Obama Administration officials who either through design or sheer incompetence, seem determined to eliminate the few friends America still has left in that part of the world.

Occam’s Tool is one of the only true gentlemen, and true conservatives that post there. Most of them are Ron Paul maniacs, and sadly are allowed to spout their filth daily against conservatives like him. Recently the so-called “moderators” who had never appeared on the scene previously, started showing up to warn me of my “name-calling”. And what was my name calling? I called the above poster, “Clint” the scum that he is as he constantly attacked me and called me vile foul mouthed names every day. I always wondered if “Clint” was one of their regular authors. AmSpec is NOT conservative and belongs in the cesspool with the rest of the rags that allow anti-semites a regular voice there and antagonize Bible believing Christians theirs.
