Good News Or Just a Blip?: Rap Sales Took a Dive in 2007

By Debbie Schlussel
Yo, Yo, Yo. Good news . . . for now. And I hope it’s a trend. But knowing you can’t underestimate bad taste in America, I’m not so sure.
Rap sales fell tremendously in 2007. While all record sales were down, they were down for the rap “genre,” more than any other:

This year’s record drop in album sales (15%) was reflected in slumping sales for every musical genre Nielsen SoundScan tracks in its year-end report.
Rap suffered the biggest drop, 30%. R&B fared best if you subtract the rap results that are part of its total: It was down about 6%. Rock, the top-selling genre (SoundScan has no pop category), fell 12.5%, and country fell 16.3%, Christian/gospel slid 14.3% and Latin was down 15.6%.

I’m Down Wit’ Dat’, My Bruthas.

Now if only the mental defectives that sing this stuff would be reduced by similar numbers. Cascading effect.

I think you have to look at illegal downloads/filesharing to get an accurate picture. Considering it promotes illegal behavior, what should the “artists” expect?
Secondly, I think the line between R &B and rap is maybe not clear.
But I think it is a sign that rap “artists” didn’t make as much money, or at least their labels didn’t.
Would be curious to know how “Christian” rap/hip-hop fared, supposedly this genre is set to explode like Christian rock (even cleaner than Country) has the past few years.

Sure, rap sales are down but so are other genres, even uber white country and rock. Downloading has caused a consistent decline in record sales since like 2002. any moron who hasn’t been hibernating for the past 5 years will tell you that.
So all you rap-haters, don’t get your draws wet yet because rappers are making more money than ever before. Hip hop is a billion dollar industry – always has been and even more so now.

Great news, I hope it leads to the extinction of RAP otherwise known as second grade level atempts at rhyming.
I hope this brings back the Rock and Roll music of the 1970’s.

Well, my “draws” (lol) are dry and covering my butt like they should. My only “bling” is my wedding ring and if I wore a ball cap, it would be on bill forward (idiots).
We’ll still be listening to The “uber white” Beatles long after the rotting corpses of crotch obsessed hip hoppers have decayed into sub-culture dust. Downloading or not.

Uhh classic white conservative, can’t debate sensibly so he resents to racist stereotyping. Surely even you know makes you look like fucking stupid. Who said anything about “bling” or caps? On another level, who’s to determine how people choose to wear their hats – something white kids copy anyway?

Ummm yeah, that’s why rap music was the top selling genre for 10 straight years – and its also mostly bought by white kids. Besides, the only reason Beatles and all those other artists still sell is because old people buy their records, not download them, stupid.
And yes, i know what you’re saying so don’t come at me with that lame shit, kay?
I thought so.

Emperor on January 5, 2008 at 4:46 pm

The “emperor” has no clothes. Why would something so “lame” get your blood pressure up so much?
You sound a little sensitive about the whole thing, what with your profanity and “classic white conservative” schtick.
I didn’t say you said one damn thing about “bling and caps”. I brought it up because the stereotype is TRUE (and part and parcel to the demise of the dumbed down culture it represents); and despite your painties in a wad outburst and charges of racism (weak), the hiphop culture is comical to the extreme. That’s right; I laugh at you clowns (white or black).
Make all the excuses you want. Your hating on “the man”, drug worshipping, woman bashing culture is circling the bowl. “Kay”? Thought so.

I think this is a function of the fact that Rap/HipHop people are more tech-savvy than their counterparts.
The average country fan couldn’t switch a computer on, let alone rip an MP4A file.

HA! Dream on, Grandad.
You gotta get hip to the scene, Daddio.

By their own admission the “uber-white” Beatles got rich by copying the American R&B and Motown tracks they heard as kids in the late ’50’s.

Hey, it looks like we’re on to the real reason for decreasing CD sales: crappy music!
