Pity: GWB Critiques Future Son-In-Law’s Marriage Proposal . . . in “People”

By Debbie Schlussel
Poor Henry Hager. He proposed to Bush daughter, Jenna Bush, and she accepted. But, now, he has to read President Bush’s critique of his approach . . . in People Magazine?!
I’ve written on this site about how I think it’s sad that many men no longer ask their future fiancee’s father for his blessing/permission. I think it’s a charming tradition and one of the good things from the past.
But I’m thinking twice, if the father in question is President Bush. Hager asked for Bush’s permission. And then had to read about it in People. A private moment exposed to the public by the classless preppy millionaire Prez:

He kind of sidled up to me and said, ‘Can I come and see you?’ We were sitting outside the presidential cabin here, and he professed his love for Jenna and said, would I mind if he married her? And I said, ‘Got a deal.’ [Laughter] And I’m of the school, once you make the sale, move on. But he had some other points he wanted [to make]. He wanted to talk about how he would be financially responsible.

Well, caveat emptor. I guess this kind of thing is expected when you buy into–no less, marry into–the Bush family, where “manners” don’t exactly jibe with their station in life.

Sounds like a responsible young man. Too bad he’s got a boor for a future father-in-law.
