Neil Diamond, Pedophile?

By Debbie Schlussel
By now, you’ve probably heard the news that Neil Diamond disclosed that he wrote his hit “Sweet Caroline” for Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, because of a LIFE Magazine photo of her on a horse when she was . . . 9(?!) and he was 25(?!).
The story–which belongs in People Magazine–was on the new People Magazine telecasts, last night: NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams and The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.
Says Diamond:

The star explained how he had been a “young, broke songwriter” when he saw a photograph of the president’s daughter in a magazine.
“It was a picture of a little girl dressed to the nines in her riding gear, next to her pony,” he recalled. “It was such an innocent, wonderful picture, I immediately felt there was a song in there.”
Years later, holed up in a hotel in Memphis, he would write the words and music in less an hour.

I like Neil Diamond’s “America,” which has sadly become an anthem to illegal alien advocates and the open borders crowd. But I’m wondering: Is it just me . . . or is there something weird about a guy who is in his mid-to-late 20s writing a song about a girl that young, featuring these lyrics (remember Kennedy was 12 when the song came out, but was between 6 and 9 when it was written)?:

Hands, touching hands, reaching out
Touching me, touching you
Oh, sweet Caroline . . . .
And now I, I look at the night, whooo
And it don’t seem so lonely
We fill it up with only two, oh . . . .
How can I hurt when holding you
Oh, one, touching one, reaching out
Touching me, touching you
Oh, sweet Caroline

Neil Diamond gave the second largest divorce settlement in U.S. history ($150 million–at the time it was the largest, but now Michael Jordan’s, just over $150 mill, is #1) to his second ex-wife, Marcia Murphey. Maybe she had something like this on him . . . ?
Just wondering.

What a strange revelation!!
Filling up the night with just the two of us (“We fill it up with only two”) can only be a romantic reference. No way this is not perverted.
There was always something creepy about the guy, and now he explains it for us.
Odd that he should be spilling his guts on this, and more odd that Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg should be appreciating the revelation.
But then, the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree, I guess…

Red Ryder on November 21, 2007 at 3:30 pm

I say he should have been casterated as soon as Kennedys discovered he was dreaming of sexual things with Caroline..
Pedophiles like him can often get away with this lind of thing because of their fame..ie Jacko..

Neal Winsor on October 2, 2014 at 4:11 pm

um… your suggestion that a guy is a pedophile because he writes an appreciation of a young girl is just crazy. was it robert louis stevenson who photographed naked girls in victorian england? was he accused of molesting them? if someone writes about or has pictures of dogs, is he involved in bestiality?
i like this site, but sometimes — and surely in this case — the perception is just unhinged.
[SB: UM, SORRY, BUT WRITING THAT ABOUT A GIRL WHO’S IN THE SINGLE DIGITS OF AGE IS CREEPY. AND FYI, WE AIN’T IN VICTORIAN ENGLAND. BUT IF STEVENSON DID THAT TODAY, HE’D BE BEHIND BARS. AND YES, IF SOMEONE WRITES A SONG ABOUT HAVING SEX WITH HIS DOG THAT RAISES SOME PRETTY SERIOUS QUESTIONS. HAVING A PICTURE OF A DOG IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THAN WHAT IS IN THE LYRICS OF THIS SONG. SPEAKING OF UNHINGED, IF THAT WAS YOUR DAUGHTER, BETWEEN 6 AND 9 YEARS OLD, HOW WOULD YOU FEEL WITH A SONG LIKE THAT WRITTEN ABOUT HER BY A FULL GROWN ADULT? I GUARANTEE YOU’D BECOME UNHINGED. IT’S BEYOND CREEPY. DS]

Not a pedophile. More like a liberal idiot has-been who is trying to regain some media attention by claiming that he wrote his most famous song after seeing a picture of a Kennedy kid. Years after.
Yeah, right.
This smells about as true as Hillary Clinton’s claim that she was named after the guy who climbed Mt. Everest. Perhaps not as easily refuted, but this story sounds like self-serving crapola.

RepublicanPatriot on November 21, 2007 at 4:02 pm

StillBreathing–
I believe you are referring to Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, aka Lewis Carroll (Alice in Wonderland). In fact, he was widely thought of as a pedophile, but this was later seen to be a complete–if well-meaning–distortion of his life, based on Victorian “morals.”
In that strange society, it was better to be thought of as “pure” in not having affairs with adult women (although he actually did), and confining himself to “appreciating” young virginal girls.
Saying that, the guy was still very odd…
At any rate, as Debbie says, these Victorian glosses have nothing whatever to do with Diamond’s problem.

Red Ryder on November 21, 2007 at 4:07 pm

OH, he did not write that song for her — give me a break. He’s just making it up now to get some attention. It’s pretty desperate if you ask me. Pathetic, yes, but a pedophile? No. Just an aging has-been who’s run out of ideas on how to get his career resurrected.

AmericanJewess on November 21, 2007 at 5:21 pm

First, thanks to Red Ryder, who reminded me that it was Lewis Carroll.
Neil Diamon did not seem to have said that he wrote the song about Caroline Kennedy. He saw the girl’s prettiness and years later, used the name. And if he dedicates the song to her — I mean, comparing this to Beethoven’s Fer Elise is a bit much, I agree — but if he used the name, I don’t see even a slight objection.
Neil Diamond is a real person. It is just over the top to semi-accuse him of a crime against humanity for …. oh, well, maybe the songs are a kind of crime; but that’s not what you mean.
I don’t think we are even slightly undermining civilization by saying, “Oh, no harm done.”
I was once on the Long Island Railroad, sitting near a woman who was talking loudly and endlessly about the constant threat of rape. Even thinking about this makes my middle-aged, male spine tense. As Freud might have said, “Somethings a guitar is just a guitar.”
The upper-cased intensity of your expression about this reminds me of that experience; but more important to the work you do, it undermines your credibility om issues that are far more important than Neil Diamond’s aesthetic sense.
[SB: I ALWAYS USE UPPER-CASE LETTERS IN MY RESPONSES TO COMMENTS. IT’S THE ONLY WAY I HAVE IN THIS BLOG PROGRAM TO DIFFERENTIATE MY RESPONSE FROM THE ORIGINAL COMMENT. NO EMOTION IS MEANT BY THE CAPS. ALSO, HE DIDN’T USE HER BEAUTY AND NAME YEARS LATER. HE SAYS THAT HE WROTE THIS WHEN SHE WAS THAT YOUNG. IT BECAME A HIT A FEW YEARS LATER. I’M BEGINNING TO AGREE WITH AMERICAN JEWESS THAT HE WROTE THE SONG ABOUT SOMEONE ELSE OR NO-ONE AT ALL, THEN DECIDED TO RIDE THE KENNEDY BANDWAGON TO GLOM HIMSELF ONTO THE HIGHLY OVER-RATED FAMILY OF AMERICAN “CAMELOT.” KINDA LIKE HILLARY CLINTON CLAIMING SHE WAS NAMED AFTER SIR EDMUND HILLARY, EVEN THOUGH HE ACHIEVED HIS FEAT–REACHING THE SUMMIT OF MT. EVEREST–TWO YEARS OR SO AFTER SHE WAS BORN. DS]

StillBreathing on November 21, 2007 at 6:19 pm

As you may have realized, I meant the quote to be, “Sometimes, a guitar is just a guitar.”
I like that.

StillBreathing on November 21, 2007 at 6:26 pm

The image could have set his imagination going in a direction that really had nothing to do with that 9 year-old or any 9 year-old.
Maybe with the presidential election upon us, he’s (or People’s editors) exhuming some remnant of Camelot glamour – dredging for his own unique contribution. Isn’t glamour (or a strange definition of it) what the Clintons represent to those who like to be wowed by them?
The “America” video was nice. Good memories. Thanks. Happy Thanksgiving.

Jeremiah on November 21, 2007 at 7:17 pm

Forgot to say: with revelations about Pete Townshend surfing kiddie porn, and Elton John’s recent acquisition of “art photography” of very scantily clad children, an inquiring mind should want to know what’s up with Neil.

Jeremiah on November 21, 2007 at 7:23 pm

Debbie, thanks for the great memory of the “America” clip. Have admired and welcomed Neil’s music for, well, many decades. He has written some wonderful and inspiring orchestral pieces (“African Trilogy” comes quickly to mind). Some have recorded just the instrumental versions of his music and they are beautifully done. That said, I dearly hope that the reference to Caroline Kennedy is taken out of context and not true, but, as you say, if it is, it is disturbing. Too often, people we admire turn out to be not so admirable. Sadly, it brings to light the truth that we are all, at best (and worst), human. And without God uppermost in our lives, we are most reprehensible. Obviously, with failed marriages in Neil’s past, all that show biz glitter is not necessarily what it appears to be.

Floyd R. Turbo on November 21, 2007 at 7:47 pm

Debbie, I bet we never see talents like Bette Midler, Barbra, Neil Diamond or Barry Manilow again. The culture has shifted, and the era of the uncloseted SuperJew is probably over. Happy TG.

Now, if he could just tell me what he was thinking when he wrote “Longfellow Serenade.”

barrypopik on November 21, 2007 at 8:11 pm

So, Sweet Caroline was inspired by a prepubescent Caroline Kennedy…what’s next Neil, the frightening revelation that “Cracklin Rosie” was hatched from a longing gaze at a photo of Rose Kenendy? I think I’m beginning to understand that “Solitary Man” lyric, Neil.

Southernops on November 22, 2007 at 8:49 am

I’m shocked, shocked I say, that you would equate a 25 year old man’s, ahhh, interest? in a 9 year old girl as anything except divine. Did not The Prophet (may Allah bless his camels, or something) marry a 6 year old and consummate the marriage when she was but 9? Did not our Prophet (may Allah grant him eternal piece (oops..)) urge fathers not to let their dauhters have their “first blood” at home? Your obvious Islamophobia is showing. How dare you apply infidel, crusader, ummah standards on matters such as this. I’m calling CAIR. All eighteen members…..

Always_Right on November 22, 2007 at 8:54 am

Wait, did Hillary Clinton really claim that she was named after Sir Edmund Hillary? She was born in 1947- he didn’t climb Everest until 1953.

This is the same guy who wrote “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman, Soon.” Read those lyrics. There is no context required. Neil Diamond is a pedophile (or at least, a pederast). I am an attorney and a father of two daughters, and if I saw this douchebag within two miles of my home, I would gun him down like a rabid dog in the street. Oh, and he can sue me for slander or the like. His lyrics are published all over the internet. Do you hear me Neil Diamond!!! Go ahead and sue me, you PERVERT!

dpzer on April 12, 2010 at 3:35 am

So on that basis you must be a murderer and deserve the death penalty.

Maffi on May 1, 2013 at 9:07 am

dpzer – I can guarantee Diamond won’t sue you, because yes he is indeed a paedophile. He has never sued Brice Taylor, who wrote a book several years ago called “Thanks for the memories” in which she alleges that Diamond is a paedophile who likes to shoot kiddie-porn videos.

” Now, if he could just tell me what he was thinking when he wrote “Longfellow Serenade.” ”

That one’s easy:

Ride baby Ride!!!!!

Ur all sick. Neil diamond is a perfect human being in every sense!!! FULL STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Trev on July 10, 2012 at 2:51 am

I came here after hearing Diamond’s song “Girl You’ll be a woman soon” for the first time, which I have to say, alarmed me.
I’m a singer. I’m an adult man. No way would I sing that song. It’s creepy.
Disturbing stuff.

Preponderance on March 13, 2013 at 5:24 pm

Sweet Caroline was proudly sung even though everyone now knows it’s origin.

I hope we can marry sweet young girls soon like the ancient Judeans of the desert southern kingdom did (maybe not the rich northern Israelis) and thusly can wake from this 150 years of feminism.

… Why is Jew and Israeli used interchangeably? Not the same thing, never was, not even when the old testament was written.
Israeli = Rich, nice land, more eglitarian with women.
Judean = poor, bad land, but can marry very nice young girls, master (ba’al) of the woman, rped girls get kept by man (oh sorry, the word used for describing the capture by force of cities and manipulation of swords and other non-willful instruments couldn’t possibly mean the same thing when dealing with a female child).

MkEv on April 26, 2013 at 3:40 pm

Came here randomly after reading Brice Taylor’s book… Thanks for the memories.. Those lyrics are very disturbing. Hope this guy gets prostate cancer or Hemorrhoids for hurting innocent kids against their will.

Ciao

Cassie on May 28, 2013 at 2:27 pm

You are a sick woman. They did that to sell the song. He later claimed that it was a publicity stunt to sell the song but it WAS NOT written for her and you are a bitch for calling someone a pedophile without reason. YOU oviously were sexually abused and perhaps wish he would find you attractive but you are not. I mean you are less than average in a photoshopped picture so shut up! How dare you. There is nothing creepy aout him he is a nice man.

Tatiana on April 21, 2015 at 1:10 am

Hmm. Lately there’s been revelation of a top US celebrity who is into children. I wonder.
