I hope to hell that you have a gun and that you know how to use it. If you don’t, consider buying a Mossberg short-barreled 20 guage shotgun with a pistol grip for inside your home. You don’t need to aim very well with it to hit your target. That’s what I have, and I feel very secure with it and my four dogs–three of whom are huge.
For outside the home, there are probably others who comment on this blog who can suggest a good handgun. I chose mine on the basis of how easily I could load the clip–which is probably not a good basis.
