Wonder “Woman” & Bat”woman”: Most Chick Superheroes are Masculine in Comics

By
Many are up in arms that a new, “retooled” Lesbian Batwoman will soon be on the pages of comic books. If you think this is the first lesbian your daughters and sons will be stung with in comic books, you haven’t been paying attention.
Most comic book heroines are VERY masculine, especially those drawn by DC Comics, which also publishes Batwoman comics. They are basically men with long hair . . . on a ton of steroids. They may not be openly lesbian as Batwoman will be. But they are definitely butch and don’t look a thing like women. No femininity involved with these she-male monstrosities. Is that what you want your kids learning that a woman should be like? And is blurring the genders such a great thing? Hardly.

Take Wonder Woman, one of our fave superheroes (when she was actually a woman). Look at the photos we’ve posted from Wonder Woman over the decades and Wonder Woman, now. She used to be a woman. Now he/she/it is a . . . ?
Feminine Wonder Woman, Then . . .

Masculine/Steroidal Wonder Woman, Now . . . .

Which one would you rather see your daughter emulate, your son date?

Like snap-shots through time, those images are quite revealing. An underlying message to young girls seems to be that “you are powerful”, “you are invincible”, “you don’t need a man”.
It’s kind of sad really that there are actually grown women who also believe that child’s fantasy. They believe that this facade called civilization, built by men, just somehow appeared by magic and that it will last forever. You know the ones, the “we are all equal” crowd. They don’t understand the world’s current problems because they don’t understand the nature of man or woman.
They don’t understand that her strength is actually made perfect in her weakness. That what normal men find so desirable about her is her femininity. That a decent man has an innate desire, a hard-wired instinct, to protect and care for her. On second thought, maybe they do know all of that, which makes it even more disgusting.
My personal belief is that God’s greatest gift to man was woman. He is nothing without her. There would be no Bach, Newton, Einstein, etc. etc., without her. And, I don’t want to drop any names here (Stern), but she deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
I would guess that this Lesbian Batwoman trend will only increase as we spiral toward the end of days.

Also to Marcubius it is you who does not understand the nature of men and women. Women are not weak by nature in fact only weak natured men like weak women. Also being a strong woman does not mean that you do not like men. Wonder Woman has been shown with many men. As for civilization it was built by both men and women. In fact before the patriarchal and agricultural revolution happened in history society was largely matriarchal. The world’s current problems are precisely because of men like you. It has been the patriarchal ideology that has caused more wars, problems and evil then any other phenomena in the world. You equate femininity as weakness and a desire to protect women when in reality in nature animal females typically tend to be strong and able to fight for themselves. They men typically respect women because they can hold their own. The Norse who were a Pre Christian people for instance had many warrior females and respected them because of the fact that they could hold their own with men. Only weak typically Abrahamic men want a weak woman in order to make themselves feel strong. As for Lesbians in comics this is nothing new. In Japan for instance they have gay characters in comics and in cartoons all of the time.

Someone I used to respect, and who would also have an interest in this topic, recently said that what makes us great is Capitalism. To that person I would say; you need to know more. Capitalism is great. But what makes us great, what makes us who we are — different from all others, are the people who developed Capitalism. And no, they were not women, Muslims, Mexicans, Africans, or Eskimos:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capitalism#History_of_capitalism
If we don’t start waking up from our PC-induced coma and real soon, things are going to get alot worse for everyone. We had better start recognizing just who we are before our time runs out.
Also, I would say that I love women. Their femininity is wonderful and necessary. It is needed for the harmonious functioning of the family unit but it will not work for governing a nation. Especially a diverse nation. What makes women so special and precious is in fact their tolerance, their kindness, and their compassion. Women are wired this way for a very good reason but that reason is not for the ruling of world affairs.
Women are vitally important but when men, specifically Western men, allow them to exceed their natural roles then we will have problems. We are to blame not them.
And before all of you radical (Western of course) feminists get unhinged ask yourselves this question: Of all the women on this planet, you have more freedoms, more material possessions, more influence, indeed, even pampered in comparison to all other women on earth. Why is that? Did you obtain all of that through your own power? Or is it because of how your men feel about you?
If I can shock some of you awake, then I’ll settle for that.

mucas:. did you really say all that? talk about white trash.

danny on June 4, 2006 at 4:27 pm

Yes danni, the white trash that keeps your @ss afloat. I’ve also prepared something for you to read. This is something you need to study very carefully. There are a few good attorneys left:

Now if you can emulate him you’ll have something worthwhile to say rather than just critique everyone else.

Mucaus:So I’m going to emulate or i’ve nothing good to say?As far as a critique of your wisdom on all .we will stay with the white trash advice given free on the PC.boy you.

Dr. Zaius on June 4, 2006 at 11:58 pm

One more thing for which we can thank the feminist movement. After all if women are convinced that women can do anything that a man can do, than it’s natural that a women would want to beef up like a man.

czekmark` on June 5, 2006 at 8:48 am

Marcubius, I take issue with some of your comments. Firstly, not all women are tolerant, kind and compassionate. Those are juvenile stereotypes meant to… ahem… keep a woman in her place. In fact, the very owner of this blog has more balls (proverbially speaking) than many men. Have you ever visited a Liberal website, blog, etc.? Between the whining, the tantrums, and the all around ungentlemanlike behaviour, is it any wonder (pun intended)why the once “feminine” Wonder Woman has sprouted muscles? The fact that you, in order to feel manly, must surround yourself with tolerant, kind, compassionate, female wallflowers is of little substance in a world, wherein, the supposedly macho, Lone Texas Ranger Bush stated on National television that Islam (an anti-semitic religion founded by a pedophile)is a religion of peace. How kind, compassionate, and tolerant of him! Fortunately for us, Debbie’s intellect doesn’t have to filter itself through Marcubius’ world.

siggy’s-slippers:as , you are one that can add to this site. And we all know that my indorsement means all.But islam (is) the religion of peace and bush has been more pro-israel than any past U.S.A.leader with the shit comming down. brace yourself for hillery or whatever. But the trick is to folow little israel and not stand on stage holding hand with Arrafat’s wife

danny on June 5, 2006 at 9:05 pm

Democrat’s hold hands with the people that back terror.Since 9/11 bush and his large born again voter’s have stood out to back little israel.for that his party will and should get all the votes.freud’s-slipper’s is one good writer. Now I’ll go kick the dog and have the littel woman bring me a beer.

danny on June 5, 2006 at 9:14 pm

For the record, I’ll take a woman capable of standing on her own two feet any day of the week.
Those of you hoping for a return to WW’s earlier “man-dependent” days might want to reconsider your notions of what fantasy consists of.

Codemorse on June 6, 2006 at 1:45 pm

Danny, it would be more impressive if you kicked the little woman and got the dog to bring you a beer.
… 😉
For those with no sense of humor — I’m kidding!

Freudianslippers on June 6, 2006 at 6:03 pm

“Marcubius, I take issue with some of your comments.”
You should have, most were said tongue-in-cheek. First, I am on a woman’s site here whom I admire, have spoken highly of a self-proclaimed Lesbian Feminist — Tammy Bruce on this site and elsewhere. And would vote for Michelle Malkin for President over a Bill Clinton in a second.
Your responses were interesting though. “white trash” not withstanding.

Marcubius on June 7, 2006 at 3:02 am

By the way, I still haven’t been able to ascertain who danny is. I have been assuming that it is “Eminem’s Revenge.” That would make sense. Whoever you are, you have strangely been allowed to curse me with profanity for reasons that seem bizare. Everytime I have mentioned anything to do with the illegal alien problems here in the U.S. I get insulted or cursed yet Debbie seems to agree with what I have said. THAT is strange! If you are instead Jewish, I thought that your objections were possibly due to PC reasons, hence the link above.

Marcubius on June 7, 2006 at 10:02 am

One last clarification: The “Someone I used to respect” comment was not Debbie, I meant everything I said about her and more. I think she is wonderful. Rather, it is someone who knew or had access to information or people, about our current problems. This person wavered then went backward rather than forward. Had access to a person with enormous grasp of our problems and still chose to not listen. Personal agendas got in the way.

Marcubius on June 7, 2006 at 10:14 am

Debbie,
What comics did those images come from? And does anyone know where I can pick up some old-school comics like those?
Thanks
Matthew

Matthew on January 8, 2009 at 1:09 pm

Matthew,
The last Wonder Woman image comes from a series called Infinite Crisis, which can be picked up in TPB form. The second to last Wonder Woman is, I believe, a George Perez rendition (though I could be wrong, could be Phil Jimenez who draws quite similarly). His run is also colelcted in TPB. Actually, most everything you are looking for is collected in some form or another in TPB or hardbound collection. The first three can likely be found in various Wonder Woman Archives collections which are easily available through Amazon. Warning, the Archives collections are a tad on the pricey side. DC has been experimenting with a line of smaller, cheaper Golden Age collections called Chronicles, but I don’t believe there has been any featuring Wonder Woman.
As for the comics companies drawing more masculine women, I’ve never really thought about it. Personally, it would make more sense for the characters to be beefed up somewhat in order to lay a smackdown. Wonder Woman, especially in recent years, has been emphasized as an Amazonian warrior that can stand toe to toe with Superman. In that regard, a dainty Wonder Woman wouldn’t cut it visually.

Robert on January 9, 2009 at 3:56 am

Now as for regards to homosexuality in comics…
I’m not opposed to the idea of tasteful representations of homosexual characters in comics. My problem is, by and large, the representations are crude and lascivious, geared towards a predominantly male audience that has little desire for honest depictions of homosexual males and more interest in fulfilling their juvenile fantasies of being surrounded by georgeous lipstick lesbians.
Your example of Batwoman above is one. But, you forgot to mention that she has a lover, the new version of The Question, former GCPD police detective Renee Montoya. Now because their relationship is on again/off again, Montoya can often be found bedding down other equally georgeous lesbians, usually after a long day of binge drinking.
It’s not surprising that comics, especially DC Comics, would be willing to sell this garbage. The comics industry has been tanking for years and DC especially has been a perpetual runner-up to Marvel Comics. Bizarre lesbian antics, on-panel rapes (Identity Crisis #2, Dr. Light rapes the wife of the Elongated Man)…..oh, my favorite moment was in an issue of The Outsiders, written by Judd Winick. I can’t remember the issue number, 30-something, best I can remember, but half the issue was dedicated to a post-coital discussion by one of the characters rationilizing her desire to whore around with whomever she pleased. I think the series was actually canceled shortly after that.
As bad as this all gets, there is one thing to keep in mind. Little kids don’t really read comics anymore. At three bucks a pop, and with other sources of entertainment, comics readers are usually somewhere between 17 and 30. Little kids certainly aren’t picking this stuff up at all. And with prices set to increase to four bucks a pop in 2009 (Marvel’s Ultimate line of books is already there), you can bet your sweet bippy that the audience will get older still as only people with a steady and reliable source of income will be able to afford them.

Robert on January 9, 2009 at 4:34 am

“No femininity involved with these she-male monstrosities.” Remarks like these prove that you haven’t even bothered to look at the comics these characters are in. If you actually read Batwoman in Detective Comics, you would see that the character is very much in touch with her femininity. I find it hilarious that you’re implying that a character loses female qualities if she becomes powerful. Furthermore, if you’re indicating that the images of Wonder Woman by Jim Lee and George Perez resemble “men with long hair . . . on a ton of steroids” I’m sorry, but you have no grasp of anatomy. I would choose the independent Wonder Woman types over what you perceive to be the apt way women should act.

Sandman on February 8, 2010 at 10:51 pm

Honestly I don’t see where you getting, you make it sound like WW is some bodybuilder woman who shaves her mustache every day.

It seems a bit sexist to have a “amazon warrior” not have some muscle definition.

People complain how she looked then for basically looking like a whore, now people like are complaining she looks too butch. WHEN WILL IT END.

Hard-boiled on February 16, 2010 at 6:07 pm

It’s ok. They’re just cartoon characters. That big ol’ Wonder Woman won’t be dating little Jimmy anytime soon.

Captain Rescue on April 16, 2010 at 9:51 pm

Ah yes and now Debbie’s Abrahamic misogyny reels her ugly head. First of all none of the pics you show depict these women as looking like “men with long hair.” It depicts them looking strong and physically fit. If you saw a woman at a fitness show they would look like Wonder Woman and Batwoman as would any female warrior in antiquity. Women can become very strong without steroids.
