Responding to Schlussel Expose, Charity Navigator Downgrades Hannity Charity: Freedom Alliance Rating Now Only 2 Stars (“Needs Improvement”)

By Debbie Schlussel

(bumped up by Debbie’s site administrator)

We’re finally starting to see the rest of the world come to realize what I originally reported on this site:  that both Sean Hannity and Freedom Alliance are defrauding donors to their scams, er . . . “charities.”  And now, as a result of my work, a major charity evaluator–a charity evaluator whose rating of the group I exposed as completely flawed–has woken up downgraded Freedom Alliance, slashing its rating in half.

freedomallianctwostars

freedomconcerthannity

A few weeks ago, I blew the lid off of the fraud that is Sean Hannity’s Freedom Concerts and the scam “charity” known as “Freedom Alliance.” I showed you the organization’s tax returns and how Hannity lied to his audience when he told them a $30,000 sponsorship by Boca Java would fund a whole year’s college scholarship for the child of a fallen American soldier.  I showed you that, in fact, Freedom Alliance has NEVER paid for the full year’s tuition of a college student.  Not even close.  And I showed you the pitifully small amounts–$200 here, $165 there–that Freedom Alliance gave to soldiers who lost three limbs and an eye or were totally blinded with their face blown up.

And since then, after I followed up and reported the accounts of TWO insiders, witnesses to Oliver North telling Sean Hannity to stop spending hundreds of thousands of dollars of the concert revenues on private planes–money that was secreted through the bank accounts of Premiere Speakers Bureau, the conservative amen crowd (no different than Obamabots) has been largely silent, unable to refute what I’ve written, with Hannity and Premiere refusing to disclose the financial records of the concerts.  At first, like Obama’s brainless, hypnotized minions, they attacked me and echoed the empty denials of the malefactors here, declaring that a “debunking.”  But if the debunking of con artists and frauds was actually “debunking,” we’d have no need for prisons.

But now, as a result of my investigation, Charity Navigator–which many of the smirking apologists for Hannity (most of them as fraudulent as he is and, yes, that includes Fraudkin and Big Follywood) cited–has downgraded Freedom Alliance from a “Four Star” charity, to a “Two Star” charity, meaning it “Needs Improvement” and “Underperforms Most Charities in Its Cause.” And, frankly, even that rating is charitable.  As I noted in my piece, Charity Navigator’s original Four Star ranking was baloney.  It was bogus, and involved a silly, inept number-crunching formula which counted Freedom Alliance’s millions of dollars spent on cronies and consultants as actually going to the intended recipients of the charity.  I’m glad that, after my work, Charity Navigator sorta woke up.

As I noted then:

In investigating Freedom Alliance and its tax forms, I learned that the organizations which evaluate charities are entirely worthless. Freedom Alliance is certified as “Best in America” by the “Independent Charities of America.” It is also rated a “Four Star Charity” by “Charity Navigator.” Both of these “ratings” are posted prominently on Freedom Alliance’s website, misleading donors into believing they are donating to a worthy cause, when in fact they are mostly donating to a black hole of expenses. Even Charity Navigator notes in its strange, illogical, and mostly inaccurate Four Star rating that Freedom Alliance has a fund-raising “efficiency” of only nine cents on the dollar. And, in fact, Charity Navigator’s ridiculous rating formula robotically crunches numbers in a way that considers the money spent mostly on consultants, postage, and printing as having gone to the wounded soldiers and kids of fallen soldiers, when in fact that’s not where it went at all. It simply can’t be taken seriously.

Well, now Charity Navigator wants to be taken seriously and has revoked its baseless Four-Star baloney. Like I said, glad this lackluster charity evaluator finally, partially woke up.

charitynavigatorfreedomalli
charitynavigatorstars

But you know who still hasn’t woken up and doesn’t want to be taken seriously?  The many prominent conservatives in the apologist crowd, who cited the original, bogus Four Star rating in their phony defenses of Hannity, the con-artist charity, and their concert scam.  Not one has noted the downgrade.  Not one.  And maybe that’s because they’ve all taken money for ads for Vannity’s new book on their websites and whored themselves out to appear on his book tour (the cost of their travel, including Fraudkin’s and Paulnut/anti-Semite Erickson’s, reduces the amount of money–the non-existent “profits”–Vannity said he was going to “give to charity” to the troops, via the Two Star/Needs Improvement Freedom Alliance).

And in one, case, Fraudkin’s, it’s the only primetime outlet she has left on FOX News on which to pimp herself, since she’s in a petty woman-scorned feud against Bill O’Reilly (one of her many such petty feuds against myself, Ann Coulter, and many other conservatives to whom she rightfully feels inferior). Fraudkin demanded an apology from me for telling the truth and being able to read a tax form, neither of which, as she’s amply demonstrated, she’s competent to do. I won’t demand an apology here, because none will be forthcoming from these haughty phonies and liars, and even if it did it would be as relevant and important as an ant urinating. (Fraudkin didn’t apologize to the two AIPAC lobbyists she repeatedly attacked in her anti-Israel, anti-Semitic rants. I can’t expect better treatment from the selfish charlatan.)

Oh, and by the way, Freedom Alliance quietly erased all references and links to Charity Navigator from its site, despite using the bogus, now-downgraded rating from the group as a defense for its waste and fraud, just weeks ago.

I’m still waiting for the financials on Hannity’s private planes and the millions in profits Duane Ward and Premiere made from the Freedom Concerts, all while Hannity knowingly lied to his audiences telling them all the profit would got to the troops.  Nope, the profit went to his cronies.  And by the way, I now have evidence some of the profit may have gone into his pockets.  Plus we already know that hundreds of thousands remained in his pockets as concert revenue went to pay for his private planes and fancy accommodations for his posse.

Stay tuned for that, as I have a lot more on Hannity, the Freedom Concerts, and the Freedom Alliance coming up.  This isn’t going away.

For now, ask  yourself:  why would anyone give to a charity that even Charity Navigator now says, “NEEDS IMPROVEMENT”?

Needs Improvement?

How about Need Full Criminal Investigation complete with Indictments?

goldenmike4393 on April 5, 2010 at 3:01 pm

I agree. This looks like tax evasion. Funny, Hannity talks about Tim Geithner as being a tax cheat. Hmm. This needs to be criminal investigated to see if he funneled money to other “businesses.”

Antoinette on April 5, 2010 at 7:42 pm

So sad. Sean used to say there is no dirt on him. This looks so bad. Thanks Debbie for telling it as it is.

    PoserIndex.com on April 6, 2010 at 3:57 am

Good ol’Debbie kickin ass and posting names.
Damn they must hate seeing you on the caller ID.
Keep it up.

ender on April 5, 2010 at 3:13 pm

really waiting for the financials; the tax forms do not look good for Vannity but a real balance sheet and annual income/expense statements are required to nail this puppy down Debbie.

If the foundation has funded scholarships, then the liabilities side of the balance sheet will have funds appropriated for those future accrued liabilities.

Vannity should release income/expense and annual balance sheets IMMEDIATELY – along with accountant’s notes to the tax return(s) you have published.

Kinda odd that hasn’t happened, huh?

dowdaytrader on April 5, 2010 at 3:17 pm

Thanks for the updates Debbie.

My son is an Army Officer and his wife is/was a Hannity fan.
I’ve sent them your posts and was looking forward to this and other updates.

Thanks a million

OK Hannity and Levin (a Hannity drone) and North cronies…time to face reality. Your icon is a CONcert con acting in CONcert with a cabal of complicit cronies.

Debbie has shown you again who has credibility. How long before you wake up and clean house. We need people with real credibility and integrity–not fakes who talk a good game but use wounded troops as a ruse to feather their nests.

Shame on you Levin–you suck up fraud! Kiss Sean’s a– some more you phony jerk!

BB on April 5, 2010 at 3:25 pm

I totally agree BB. One thing thats really been eating at me lately, something totally off topic but regarding mark levin. There was a man arrested in my state today for threatning patty murray. Mark Levin gets his listeners all riled up, angry, furious and then gives them congress mens numbers I know rush did it recently also. I find it obsurd they don’t take any blame in this especially levin. If you listen to levin you would think the democrats want to kill us. Of course people are gonna threatin them. They get off scott free its unbelievable. My life is a lot more pleasent not listening to him anymore.

tyler on April 7, 2010 at 12:50 am

Thanks Debbie!

Please continue to pursue this….Vannity has to explain this to the wounded soldiers!!!

Paco Marquez on April 5, 2010 at 3:39 pm

I can’t wait for Fox news to report on all of this. I’ll be waiting for that about as long as I will be waiting for muslims to give up islam.

I also can’t wait for Fox to downgrade his show, put him in another time slot, or better yet, just fire this now Infamous American, not a great American. I hope Greta starts to beat this dirtbag in the cable news ratings.

Jarhead on April 5, 2010 at 3:40 pm

Every day last week greta did beat him in the ratings. On a normal night oreilly get around three and a half million and hannity and greta each pull in two. Last week greta was at two point three and vannity was around one nine or two million every night. I have been trying to spread the word about this fraud but arguing with fox news supporters is damn near impossible like debbie said they are exactly the same as obamabots. There is no difference. I had drones tell me to commit suicide, jump off a bridge, called me a liberal and a liar. To bad the truth is on our side and they are brain dead drones. I don’t even bother anymore its useless.

tyler on April 5, 2010 at 5:54 pm

I am enjoying every word of this Debbie. It’s obvious that many on the ‘right’ react in a visceral manner when being criticized by others on the right. Debbie ain’t no David Brooks.

I can understand their not wanting to hear it or face the an ugly truth, but would the other commentators & published observers prefer to be lumped in with Hannity?

Hannity himself would be better served to identify the problems and work furiously to clean this up rather than demonize (or have his friends) the messenger.

P. Aaron on April 5, 2010 at 3:40 pm

P.S.
Sean Hannity: 2 Stars.
Debbie Schlussel: 5 Stars

P. Aaron on April 5, 2010 at 3:41 pm

Thanks DS. I always appreciate the TRUTH and Hannity has changed the way he plugs his dopey book on his radioshow.

I am at least glad MM has a row going with Bill O’Reilly. He is a POS who tries to bully the women on his show (and I don’t mean in a feminist way…he is truely a bully!). I used to listen to his now defunct radio show and just couldn’t stand how he treated Lis Wiehl (whom I did not EVER agree with). It’s funny how he thinks NO ONE REMEMBERS his sexual harrassment suit, loofah and all. He’s a fraud too!

Skunky on April 5, 2010 at 3:44 pm

Here is a link to an article on the charity along with an excerpt from the article…

http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/joe_conason/2010/03/31/freedom

“The gold standard is the American Institute of Philanthropy, whose grading of Freedom Alliance in recent years has been dismally low. AIP doesn’t post the grades of the worst charities on its Web site, but in December 2009, according to CREW, the organization got a “D,” the same as in December 2008 — which represented only a slight improvement over the “F” it received in both December 2006 and December 2007.”

Great Job! You go Girl!
Keep there feet to the fire so they can’t weasel out of the reality that you exposed. i.e that Vannity and his charity are a total and utter fraud…
I never thought to look up their tax returns to see if what Mr. Vannity claimed was in fact true…I guess it’s true that one can “Learn something new every day”…Who would have known that somebody could be this Vain?
Who wants to give to this front of a charity now?

Who cares? on April 5, 2010 at 4:00 pm

Looks like Sean has more troubles.

“Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed complaints with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) against Sean Hannity, his Freedom Concerts, the Freedom Alliance and Lt. Col. Oliver North. Copies of the complaints were also sent to the attorney generals of the states in which concerts are scheduled to be held this summer.”

Hey there…wanted to thank you for the link/info, even though I cannot stand CREW, I’m glad I have the link.

Diamond Girl on April 5, 2010 at 5:53 pm

Hey Debbie…

Excellent work, I thank you so much for the update, I’ve posted your link elsewhere as well, that would be AWD (Angry White Dude) along with twitter next up…I know those on the right who are fighting you…they don’t come anymore conservative and fair than me, but the truth is the truth,I don’t care which side of the aisle you are on…sad to see the attack on you, I really am.

Diamond Girl on April 5, 2010 at 5:40 pm

Well, looks like Hannity’s lawyers have nothing to say now. Great work!!

While financials of all operations are important, they are just a first step. As you suggested, all financial records of the concerts including records of receipt, proof that all receipts are recorded and properly deposited, with records evaluated by forensic auditors, details of expenses, to make sure that they are not overstated, and similar data for the airplanes, etc. etc., is needed also.

The lack of integrity and independence of the conservative establishment is really on display here. They have always been a bunch of hacks, and regurgitated Republican press releases without critical thought just as they regurgitated the Freedom Alliance scam releases.

Even their campaigns against illegal immigration, such as they were, were phony. Fine to campaign regarding Congressional votes, but meantime, at all times, even in business downturns, illegals are sneaking (less sneaking now and more brazen) across the border, having babies here, and almost none of them talk about this, much less provide serious analysis about world events.

I’ll choke the next time I hear a hack like Kyl or Boehner on one of these shows. They should stick to their gold commercials and eHarmony.com, and leave political work to other, more capable people.

Little Al on April 5, 2010 at 5:54 pm

The risk re expenses is not only that they are disguised receipts for Hannity’s cronies, but that some may even be fictitious.

Little Al on April 5, 2010 at 5:55 pm

Nice to have an investigative journalist like Debbie, exposing corruption. My understanding is every widow automatically gets $400,000, plus other benefits, in some cases pensions and so on. I think that’s enough compared to the average person but if you want to give, just locate a widow through the public records and send her money. Why even go through a charity?

dougx on April 5, 2010 at 6:09 pm

This fraud Hannity stole my Conservative Underground tag line along with many other phrases. If you can’t patent it or lock it up, Sean might take it anyway.

AMERICA BETRAYED on April 5, 2010 at 6:17 pm

Thanks Debbie. I am an unapologetic conservative who, because of putting issues above politics, left the Republican party and became a registered Independent. I have always liked Hannity but because what is “right” is more important than what is “popular” I have to commend you for your work. It is disheartening that an avowed conservative would act like a raging liberal in feeding his ego in this way. It is shameful and should be illegal. I like Sean but this has to be exposed or at least answered in an honest, forthright manner. I always thought the premise of this charity was the most patriotic thing a man could do, but this reveals an ego maniac preying on the most vulnerable and most needy. I hate to say it but “Thank You” for exposing wrongdoing WHEREVER it occurs.

Greg on April 5, 2010 at 6:35 pm

Excellent work, Debbie. As for the apologies, well, those are only good if the person behind it, learns their lessons and changes their ways going forward.

Though I have to admit, it is rather disheartening to see someone like Hannity (and by this I mean how he is portrayed as conservative)be exposed. It is necessary, but disheartening because my liberal friends will tell me how all conservatives are frauds.

Penelope27 on April 5, 2010 at 6:55 pm

Excellent work! Once again you were first to break a national story and once again the main stream media is not giving you proper credit. Hannity, Beck and Palin are all about the money, not the the cause. Conservatives have elevated these three to sainthood, just as the liberals did with their “Messiah” OBama. Unfortunately, the majority of voters in this country are easily fooled. I can honestly say that America’s best days are behind us. It’s been a great run. I was most fortunate to have lived during the best of times, which are quickly coming to an abrupt end.

Bonzer Wolf on April 5, 2010 at 9:22 pm

Debbie, How do you find this dirt? Do you ever sleep? Hannity started out with such a noble idea. I remember him saying, with conviction, “I’m not taking one dime for my self; all the money is going to the charity”.He was almost believeable. His greatness justcarried him away. Who will you expose next? My head is still reeling from your eulogy of Walter Cronkite…

Dana on April 5, 2010 at 11:37 pm

The link to Charity Navigator is a mind blower. Looks like little Debbie helped these “guardians” to get religion! You still have to wonder why they give ANY stars to support these schmucks who wrap themselves in the flag dipped in the sacred blood and guts of real heroes in order to line their fat wallets.

Hannity, Levin and North– a troika conjured in hell …parasitic fungi feeding on the sacrifices of TRUE great Americans.

BB on April 6, 2010 at 12:40 am

As for Charity Navigator…all they do is rate the financial performance of a charity, they do not rate the effectiveness of any of the programs or services. Many charities in today’s difficult climate are having significant financial problems but are delivering important services to their constituents. So would that rate them a 2 or less?

Rating a charity goes FAR BEYOND just its financials. In fact, those who need more money are very often the most effective in serving the people who need them. Just look at many food banks, women’s shelters etc.

While I do not condone what is going on with Hannity in any way, I also think that Charity Navigator only gives a slice of the picture of a charity and that is not fair either.

sueb on April 6, 2010 at 3:56 am

SUEB, you have a fundamental misunderstanding of the issues involved. The purpose of asking for financials and related data is to measure the efficiency of FA, and the honesty of that charity’s representatives in reporting that efficiency.

Out of one dollar given, how much of that dollar reaches the stated objectives of the charity? This is a separate question from the good work done by this or any other charity. Sadly, with FA, there is a related question of whether all receipts are reported, and are any expenses overstated.

With food banks, women’s shelters etc., doners are entitled to ask the same questions. What if someone contributed $1,000 to a food bank and only about $90 of that amount was used to purchase food for needy people? And what if the food bank was saying that every penny was used to purchase food for the needy people? What if some of it went for salaries of executives making $500,000 p/y?

Really, the more noble the objective, the worse the inefficiency (to put it mildly). Financial statements and their backup are crucial in measuring this type of efficiency.

Little Al on April 6, 2010 at 5:20 am

I am not seeing this reported elsewhere. If there are other sites, I would love to see a link.

Thank you

By the way the only stations I could think of that have gone from CBS to Fox were WJBK Detroit, KDFW Dallas, WITI Milwaukee, WTVT Tampa. I know I may have forgotten a station or two…

There is a site Blacklisted News which I turn to as well as blogs like Give Us Liberty, Canada Free Press, American Grand Jury, etc. which give REAL NEWS, NOT CONTROLLED CORPORATE GLOBAL BANKSTER MEDIA CRAP!

BernardL – what part of ‘scamming people into believing every cent goes to helping these families’ don’t you understand? Debbie has detailed quite extensively Vannity’s scam. Why don’t you read all of her posts before spouting off your ‘I Love Hannity’ crap.

As to Debbie being proud of her work, I’m pretty sure she is. There are many of us who are also very proud of her work. At least here we get the straight scoop with no PC nonsense, no lies and no partisan BS. Debbie is definitely an equal opportunity smack down machine where all sides get it when they do stupid stuff like Vannity has been doing. Keep up the superb work Debbie. I can’t wait for the next installment about this now Infamous American.

Jarhead on April 6, 2010 at 11:30 am

Thank you for staying on this investigation. In addition to revealing Hannity to be a Kevin Trudeau like figure, you also exposed the group think mentality of the faux conservative internet community. Now, I know when “American Spectator” and “Media Research Corporation” do an “investigation,” they are simply parroting back something from a press release.

You have shown courage to stand up to the onslaught of mindless criticism and name calling from so called “conservatives.” While you have presented the facts in the case, they have simply rallied around a charlatan necause he buys a few ads on their sites.

The others (Bozell, Frum, Tyrell, et al) call themselves “conservatives,” but I now know that Debbie Schlussel is an honest and peincipled conservative thinker.

Thank-you for pursuing this story and exposing Hannity. His self-righteous, self-promotion is sickening. This scam is an insult to all of the legitimate charities that perform the hard work for their cause.

I hope you and CREW can share information on this mission and expose these shameless, greedy, self-righteous, thieves.

For your next investigation I hope you would look into the “foundations” politicians establish that from a legal standpoint operate like a charity, but function as cash cows to their cronies.

jcgrim on April 6, 2010 at 1:41 pm

Forgot to add that it may have been the attention brought by Debbie’s article and the CREW and VoteVets complaints that caused Charity Navigator to realize that it had not updated its scoring to reflect the 2008 tax return.

DannyG on April 6, 2010 at 2:46 pm

DannyG – It’s hard to believe that Charity Navigator made a mistake and did not update their results. Aren’t they supposed to be a reputable source of information that everyday people can count on for accurate information? I’d say that they knew, and maybe they were even in cahoots with Vannity in suppressing this information.

Jarhead on April 6, 2010 at 3:00 pm

Debbie, great work as always. its amazing our news is so very bought and paid for. the truth? millions of well meaning fans of his have no clue about any of this…there was a event in pittsburgh and Hannity brought in the crowds and everyone swooned, it was sad…they are decieved…

LP on April 6, 2010 at 3:16 pm

Debbie I actually semi-liked Hannity, so it is a sad thing. But the truth doesn’t play favorites and you have shown yourself to be a journalist with much integrity. Hannity needs to invite you on his show and straighten this out with you, that is the only way he will earn my respect back.
I really wish FOX would invite you on – they have much to gain by having a relationship with you.

C on April 6, 2010 at 3:19 pm

What is sad about this is that it will give liberals a chance to bash conservatives and bash patriotic Americans as frauds. They will not seperate the ideas from the corrupt charity efforts of Hannity and the like. Very sad.

C on April 6, 2010 at 3:21 pm

North, Levin and that gang are just not beleiveable…Along with those other people he has on his show.

LP on April 6, 2010 at 3:24 pm

Jarhead,

I doubt that Charity Navigator is in cahoots with Freedom Alliance. More than likely, it was a bureaucratic screw up, since Charity Navigator — according to their website section on methodology — manually transcribes the data from the tax forms of 5500 charities.

My guess it was the comments folks posted to their site that were inspired by Debbie’s article that made them realize they hadn’t updated the data.

DannyG on April 6, 2010 at 3:26 pm

DannyG – I wrote they might be in bed with each other. My point was that they probably knew but never updated their website.

Jarhead on April 6, 2010 at 3:31 pm

How can anyone take that smarmy Hannity jerk seriously??? Reminds me of a failed game show host.

offer schlomi on April 6, 2010 at 11:05 pm

Charity Navigator still is based 100% on number crunching they just update 2008’s return numbers and the numbers crunched to 2 stars. The problem still is the PROGRAM EXPENSES are not really going to the intended charity purpose. I think the site is somewhat helpful but you do have to look a little more at the 990 for those that try to manipulate the numbers as this charity has. They don’t want to use subjective criteria but even just the number crunching and the manipulation and the numbers no longer add up to 4 stars.

martin fee on April 8, 2010 at 8:02 am

I noticed on his show last night Hannity saying that all of proceeds of the book he is currently promoting are going to charity. It was said late in the show and almost mumbled as an aside in his mutually fawning interview with Pawlenty – not the usual self-aggrandizing promotion with which Hannity usually announces his supposed charitable deeds. I wonder if Debbie’s work is getting to him and he is now trying to do something to deflect the criticism.

S: Even that statement by him is a complete lie. There are no proceeds:

This is NOT being reported much in the rest of the media. I thought it would be, but it isn’t. I sure hope it’s not saved and then unleashed in the fall to hurt a conservative candidate somewhere (due to a relation to Hannity).

It really needs to be resolved before the elections really gets going.

BobHaze on April 8, 2010 at 9:28 am

What have you done little debbie to donate to charity? Why don’t you release YOUR records since you should be under the same scrutiny. You allege, you reveal!

Proud to be an Idiot & Apologist: I didn’t lie about a charity and secretly collect millions in free private planes, etc., while claiming to my gullible (translation: morons like you) listeners that it’s all going to wounded troops and dead troops’ kids. My record is that I don’t defraud and rip others off. I’ve been subject to far more scrutiny. If you can find that I established a phony “charity” and used it to profit myself and my friends, while ripping off severely wounded soldiers and dead soldiers’ kids, then please write about it. You may now return to your brown feces slurping at the back of Hannity’s rear end. DS
