I read that while we are all upset (including myself) about the new level of intrusiveness in the 2010 census, no one is taking note of what is NOT being asked. For the very first time, the status of people’s citizenship is not on the census. Since the census is used to determine representation in the house, illegal immigrants are counted as if they are citizens. This will add representatives to Congress from CA and TX, to name just two. IMO, this is far worse than the intrusive questions, yet there is little outrage over it.

To be fair I think the Jewish people should be Middle East or something. I don’t really think Jews are considered white although to lump all whites together is wrong too. The whole thing is screwed up. Most Jewish people do have very similar DNA. There is a small percent of converts but we are as much an ethnic group as any other group and if we weren’t then I think there is a legit issue to say that Israel isn’t ours because we are not the ancestor’s of the Hebrews. But every genetic study has shown that Jews do share DNA that suggest they clearly are the offspring of the original hebrews.

Why doesn’t the gov’t just give the census taking responsibilities over to CAIR in areas of large populations of muslims? That makes about as much sense as does this anti-American propoganda sent out by the gov’t.

I would also like to know what race has anything to do with the census. People use the arguement that this helps disadvantaged communities obtain taxpayer dollars. This sounds pretty racist to me, since they are using race as a basis for giving out our tax dollars.

I am an Arab American. I was born in the Middle East and came over as a child. I am also a Christian and a small government and social conservative. When I got the census I wrote in my race as Arabic. The reason I did this is when people hear my name is Mohammed (I converted to christianity as a teenager) no one thinks of me as white.
In fact I have had to use an alias on my resume to get jobs. I have been at my current job 5 years, my boss confided to me that he would not have called me in for an interview if I had put my given name on the Resume.
Every family was an immigrant family at one point and faced anger from those already established here…how soon we forget. This country is all about being great because we have diversity. Look at the countries that have none…Mexico, Norway, Russia. Those countries can never be what we are (the greatest country in the world) because they do not have our diversity.

The “semite” semantics are just that – conflating a linguistic term with ethnicity.

However, from a genetic standpoint you’re more closely related to Arabs than you are to Europeans. You’re descended from people in the Middle East, not the Caucasus Mountains. You’re no more “white” than Jesse Jackson. Actually, the reverend probably has more European genetic material than you do – few American blacks have no European ancestors. It’d be an interesting study to check genetic drift, but my guess is that even considering converts to Judaism, there was less genetic exchange between Jews and Gentiles in Europe than there was between whites and blacks in the antebellum South.

Numerous genetic studies show that Sephardi and Ashkenazi Jews share common ancestors and that they are more closely related to each other than either group is related to either Europeans or Arabs. Jews are, however, from the Middle East, that is clear. The group we are most closely related to are the Kurds.

Of course all of this is a side issue to the fact that the Census, continuing a tradition started when they were counting slaves, still has racial categories. I followed Mark Krikorian’s suggestion and put Other Race: American on my Census form.

I have to disagree on this one with Debbie, most Arab-Americans aren’t white/caucasian. Yes, Jews and Arabs are apparently descended from the same ancestor, Abraham, but Jews are descended from his wife Sarah and Arabs are descended from his mistress Hagar, who was an Egyptian; her son Ishmael also married an Egyptian, and so on. So Jews and Arabs having a single common ancestor (who was not an Arab) several thousand years ago isn’t exactly a close connection.

I would say that “Arab” probably should be its own racial group. It seems distinct enough (though obviously I wouldn’t support affirmative action or special benefits for that group or any other). On the other hand, modern-day Ashkenazi Jews are as white as Italians, Greeks, etc. – usually whiter than those groups, actually – and they can produce people with red hair and freckles. Arabs can’t, though, and they’re usually much, much darker than Italians/Portuguese/etc.

I’m of Persian background and I always mark “caucasian” or “white” because that’s the correct category. Honestly, I’d like to see an end to the designations entirely but until then, I’ll tick the correct box.

What’s the point of Arabs marking something different? I see it as a way they are trying to perpetuate the whole victim and/or minority status in addition to once again setting themselves apart somehow. They don’t even want to integrate on the damn census.

Sorry, but to be white – or Caucasian – you have to originate on THE OTHER SIDE of the Caucus mountains. Arabs ARE NOT Caucasian. As for Jews … the original Jews were near eastern. Well, Noah cursed Ham’s son Canaan (because of cultural reasons, he couldn’t curse Ham, because to curse your son was to curse yourself). But, going by Noah’s own direct words (which were binding) it was the descendants of Canaan who were cursed, not all of Ham’s descendants. Part of the curse? Shem shall dwell in Canaan’s tents. Not only Muslims are guilty of this. Christians, Mormons and Jews are as well. Please read mine, and also the link. Look, Barack Obama can call himself white if he wants to. (Seriously, he actually can legally claim to be white according to U.S. law, but that is another matter.) But to be white, or Caucasian, you have to be west of the Caucasus Mountains.

Iran is very close to the Caucacus Mountains, granted, which is why many Iranians are fair-skinned and could “pass.” However, Iranians ARE NOT classified as Arabs. The only reason why “white” and “Jew” are so strongly associated with each other is because of the dispersion. Make no mistake: the (Caucasian) Greeks and Romans had no problems identifying those of Jewish ancestry, and yes it was one of the reasons why Greeks and Romans thoroughly despised Jews.

My father had to escape the middle east because he converted to christianity after reading the Bible. Even though I grew up in a very christian home, I was an atheist, mostly because I saw how it had divided my father from his family and thought if there was a God he would not allow this to happen. At the age of 18, I was confronted by a sermon of my brokenness and need of a savior and so gave my life to Christ. I could give a much much more detailed account, but that is the short version.
I am currently working on my master of divinty at seminary, btw.

Isaiah, I am not sure where you get that info from. I grew up in Dearborn Michigan, which is probably the most Muslim city outside of the Middle East and of the many, many friends I have who are second generation Americans the majority are very moderate and muslim in name only, sort of like many catholics are catholic by birth more than by conviction.

How about “swarthy” instead of “arab”? I’m swarthy and undoubtedly drowning in the semitic gene pool . . . melanin-rich complexion, profuse body-hair, unibrow, prominent nasal organ, etc. Hitler himself would’ve stuffed me into an Auschwitz-bound cattle car. And, no . . . Western Mediterranean types are not swarthy, because they can’t get the uber-hairy thing right.

I’m not sure what it is you’re trying to stir up here – we don’t need anything more stirred up buy the way – but if you have/had concerns about these things why didn’t you bring them up 4-5 years ago when we started a war to give arabs with purple fingers a chance to vote for other arabs down in Iraq?

Mohammed hasn’t said anything other than he is a Christian convert. I don’t accuse Mohammed of being unorthodox because he hasn’t said anything pertaining to the Faith at all, you know, words like “Jesus Christ”, death, burial, resurrection (1 Cor. 15:1-4) just “I’m a Christian convert”. And because have read the Old and New Testament (continually), I understand we are “commanded” to “prove all things” (1 Thess. 5:21) and not swallow everything someone tells us (Rev. 2:2).

And by the way, I am a Independent Baptist, that’s about as fundamental as it gets in Christianity. ?

Many people today claim to be Christians. If you’re a Born Again believer then you should understand, as I would, why it is reasonable to be sure we are in the same faith. There are many cults and apostate branches of Christianity that claim to be “converts” but they’re not 1 John 4:2).

My son has a Muslim friend in his 40’s, son asks him about going to the mosque, said he has to or catches flak from others, son asked what about the kids, he said he keeps his kids away from there, they don’t need to hear that stuff.

My census form had no listing for “caucasian,” it only said “white.” White is a color, not an ethnicity. I put “other” and then wrote in “American.” Also, since there is no way to mark if one is of mixed race, then it seems those who consider themselves mixed get to “deem” themselves whatever they wish! Since apparently it’s all about how people perceive themselves and has no basis in actual genetics, then it’s all a joke anyway. I will be curious to see what the statistics say about how many people will mark themselves “American”s.

Debbie, Hagar was an Egyptian. She was a different race. If she wasn’t then we’d have to share this little bit of realestate but G-d promised it to the free woman not the bond woman. He did however promise Hagar she was also to be the mother of 12 nations. Interesting. Get our of the stupid movie theaters and read some Torah.
