On Those “Disputed” 1600 Israeli “Settlements”

By Debbie Schlussel

Many times over the years I’ve written about the right of Jews to live (and buy property, if they don’t already own it, and build homes) anywhere in the world we want.  That includes when the Bush Administration was making the same noxious statements as the Obamaniks are now making about apartments and homes for Jews in the eternal Jewish capital of Jerusalem, the City of David.  My sentiments haven’t changed, though I think it’s interesting that many on the right said nothing when Condi Clueless and Colin Powell and other Bushies were pressuring Israel on this issue, and yet they’re yelling from the rooftops now that it’s Obama. I’ve already criticized Obama on this issue, several times.  And I’ve written, “Whose Jerusalem?” which has everything you need to know about the faux-history and apocryphal claims of the Muslims to Jerusalem.

obamasmiling.jpgjewsnotwantedhere.jpg

“Jews Not Wanted Here”

Clearly, I find the Obama statements and actions on the 1600 Jewish apartments scheduled to be built in Israel to be loathsome–especially the hypocritical comments of Hillary Clinton who carpet-bagged from suburban Chicago to Arkansas and then to suburban New York.  She can move and build and run for Senator from wherever she wants.  And yet Jews aren’t allowed to do the same from where they’ve ALWAYS lived . . . for thousands of years?!  Hellooo . . . .? And FYI, those 1600 homes are to be built in a section of Jerusalem that is inside the Green Zone and was never going to be part of any planned, execrable “Palestinian State.”

Our friend, There Is No Santa Claus, has a great column–which is short but sweet, and very sharp–on this issue.  Here’s an excerpt:

Why is it that I can’t build a house in Jerusalem? I’m Jewish! Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the Jewish People.

Nobody questioned whether a black man could move into the White House, the capital of the United States. Certainly not Jewish-Americans, 77% of whom voted for Barack O’Bama to be our President.

Does anybody doubt for one second that O’Bambi is an anti-Semite? Glad I did not vote for him. That Nazi lover, Pat Puke-Cannon is angry that Biden wore a Jewish skull cap and visited Yad Vashem. Since Puke-Cannon is a Holocaust denier, I guess I should not be surprised. Hopefully, O’Bambi will be a one term president. As for Puke-Cannon, why does TownHall tolerate this hateful, anti-Semitic jerk?

Property rights go with the deed. At least in the US there are deeds to property that are sold per local law and custom in many states. We only need examine the purpose of a deed or title to property to understand that any control over a sovereign piece is the owners prerogative not the neighbors. Soon we will know the character of the “one” and then the “fundamental transformation” of the US he and his like have in mind will uncloak the ideas they have for the rest of the world. Obama said we should judge his governing by those he surrounded himself with. Well, aside from the official documentation he has so far successfully secreted, we can safely say he is at the least a Marxist and is heading the US toward a communist style state where ownership of all is alleged to be the peoples right but what they conveniently leave out is that absolute control over what you own belongs to the government. That becomes clear to Israelis who have been the recipient of Obamas lusted after total control over even sovereign property outside the US. He is just flexing his baby muscles in preparation for the day they are of adult strength and he can use force to accomplish his wishes. That day is not going to dawn on him or his cabal without a fight and it will be one mother of a din when the people world wide get a glimpse of his real personality when his papers finally get dislodged from his fists. The sooner the better especially for those who suffer his petty fits of foreign policy making which reflect the true Obama he dares not let his own people see.

In casually scanning the MSM, I see that Fox has covered this extensively, but I haven’t noticed CNN covering it.

Did the Jew sell the right to Jerusalem (Judea, etc) after the Jewsih rebellion? Did the Jes sell this land to muslim who did not even exist? Did the Jews even sell their land in Medina and rest of Arbia to Muslim? Maybe Jewish rights to Medina should be on the negotiation list?

I think the Biden remarks go far beyond a “no Jews allowed” in those designated (by the US and Islamists) “Arab only” areas of Jerusalem. It’s more than just the reassertion of Arab apartheid. It’s Biden’s linkage of Israel to American casualties in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, etc. Biden repeats what the antisemites in Europe say, and what the Islamists claim. And, this goes further than even the noxious Bush Administration’s State Dept. I suspect that this was intended by Obama (designed so as to appeal to Arabs, Muslims and Islamists) — to show/demonstrate that the U.S. is no longer an ally of Israel’s — that’s the larger message. It reiterates Obama’s deep and condescending bow to the Saudi King. That’s who Obama really desires to suck up to — his true allies — the Saudis and the Islamists.

J.S. on March 16, 2010 at 11:45 am

I liked Reagan, but he really disappointed on Israel, after his first election. (The Bush effects). He did not deliver on moving embassy, fired Al Haig, hired Bush, Baker and a bunch of Bechtel executives, hired Pat Puke Cannon, sanction after Israel strike of Iraqi nuclear weapon sites, wobbled on Lebanon. Did no finish off Libya terrorist state. Recognized PLO even though they did not really recognize Israel or renounce terrorism. This was done just after the 1988 election. This was part of agreement that forced Israeli to withdraw from territories they won after the Arab 1973 war of aggression. There was a reason that Jewish support of republican drop after the 1980 election and I wish these knee jerks republican would realize.

Some of us, regardless of who has sat in the Oval Office, have always been pro-Israel.
I’m 51. I’ve seen many US Gov administrations attempt to bring Peace to Israel and her neighbors. When I heard that Biden was going to Israel to do Sec State Clinton’s job, I CRINGED! I knew that he screw things up in nanoseconds. I didn’t even have time to click the stopwatch before his foot was firmly stuck in his mouth, with big mouth and plugged head up his arafat.

Here’s my middle east peace plan:
Withdraw the UN international city designation from Jerusalem.
Allow Israel to defend her borders however Israel sees fit, including pre-emptive strikes on enemies.
Drain the swamp-the US and every other peace loving country stands with Israel and defunds every enemy attacking Israel.
Meaning: Not one dollar of aid to those who perpetuate the war against Israel. Bankrupt them. Let them look to Iran for help, and then, if nessesary for Israel’s protection, nuke Iran.
Declare all alleged ‘Palestinians’ Jordanians. If they don’t like being Jordanian, tough.

Obama has had it in for Israel from the beginning. He made clear last year that he *wanted* to put space between the US and Israel as part of his “outreach” to the Arab and Muslim world. (Emanuel’s personal dislike for Netanyahu goes back to his Clinton days.) Perhaps O thought this would allow him to better serve as an “honest broker”. It’s now clear he’s advocating for the Palestinian team.

Obama is also determined that Israel not act against Iran, that it follow the US lead (need I add “or else”?). And, as Emanuel has said, “Never let a good crisis go to waste.” So now a zoning decision gave him the opening he wanted to put Israel into place, even to promote “regime change” against Netanyahu. Thus the 45 minute harangue from Shrillary Clinton (doesn’t that count as “torture”?), and the dressing down of Israel’s ambassador.

The unintended consequence of this affair is that Israel won’t be the only loser. The US loses too. Other national leaders are taking notice. If the US will disavow past understandings with Israel, even turn against that country, what credibility does the US have? Why should *they* trust the US?

Raymond in DC on March 16, 2010 at 12:11 pm

I don’t get why everyone is up in arms about Obama not recognizing Jewish rights to build these units. The problem is that Obama does not recognize Jewish rights anywhere in Israel.

Biden made a remark during his trip that I have seen others make. Besides condemning the new housing, he also said the “palestinians?” deserve a contiguous state. Would someone who actually knows the geography please explain to me how a contiguous state can be carved out of that area without making Israel discontinuous?

Lastly I agree with madman about Medina. That used to be a Jewish town (Yes, the second holiest site in Islam was a Jewish town) until Mohammed killed all the Jewish men and enslaved the women an children (One of the versions of Mohammed’s death is that he was killed by one of the Jewish woman from Medina that he enslaved).

Oh yeah…..which one?

The one they rejected in 1948 or the one they never had yet lay claim to?

And what did they do to “deserve” this state?

(Doing the dirty work for the Arabs doesn’t count.)

Sam Adams on March 16, 2010 at 12:39 pm

The Israelis couldn’t have had better timing to announce their legal, legitimate right to build on their land with Biden visiting. I applaud Isael telling our gov’t to go screw themselves and putting Biden in a difficult situation.

I hope this really pissed off BHO, Hillary, Biden and all of the other clowns in Washington. If only I could be a fly on the wall to hear them scream themselves silly. Israel needs to do even more to piss them off, like kicking all the muslims out of Israel.

If the palestinians want a state so badly lets give them a state. And just like the tiger that cannot change it’s stripes the palesinians will continue to lob rockets, mortars and bombs into Israel from their brand new state. Now, however, the Israeli’s will have a reason to take out the new palestinian state once and for all, drive the arabs into Jordan, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon or wherever and incorporate the new palestinian state as part of Israel as conquered territory. Of course the rest of the world will throw the largest hissy fit you’ve ever witnessed in your life but why should Israel care? As far as I’m concerned the fate of the palestinian arabs is an arab problem, let their arab brothers deal with it.

I am proud of the president for standing up for the interests of America rather than letting Israel run amok. For the past 16 years, ever since Bush Sr 41 left the office, Israel has been a given a free ride by Clinton & Bush Jr to do whatever it wants even break the international law. It’s refreshing to see a president who is willing to call out Israel when it is clearly in the wrong. I say the president should go one step further and just like Bush Sr did he should threaten to end financial aid to Israel if it does not respect international law.

Israel is clearly in the wrong here. Anyone who backs Israel over the whitehouse this time is unamerican.

perception of truth- It’s funny that the best you can come up with is accusing me of anti-semitism. One my best friends from college is jewish and she has the same viewpoints as well, my great great grandmother was part jewish in a country (Sweden) which was very anti-semitic at that time so don’t lecture me about antisemitism. You like to shout down anyone who says anything negative about Israel by crying “antisemitic”, there is nothing antisemitic about saying that the president should adopt Israeli policy similar to Bush 41’s of giving Israel aid only if it complies with American & the international law. As for international law, east Jerusalem is not recognized internationally as part of the state of Israel and Israel had previously assured the international community and George W that it will not build settlements in that area. This has nothing to do with anti-semtism and everything to do with the plight of palestinian people who are the victims when Israel is sabotaging the peace talks.

What has the achievements of Jewish scientists got to do with what we are talking about? What is the land you talk about that Israel should take back? Israel is already occupying more land than it has the right to.

No. Neither does Israel. You can accuse others of antisemitism all you want but this comes down to having respect for international law and consensus. Norman Blitzer on March 16, 2010 at 3:06 pm

Actually Norm, the Reagan Administration affirmed that Jewish “settlements” in Judea/Samaria were legal; the last Presidential Administration to do so. The Reagan Administration noted that the “settlements” were provocative to the Arabs, but did not challenge Israel’s right to build them.

The Carter Administration was the first Presidential Administration to actually declare the “settlements” illegal. (Like that should surprise anyone. Eh?) In 1980, Carter became the first Democratic Presidential candidate to fail winning a majority of the Jewish vote since 1924.

The inalienable rights of Jews to the Biblical heartland must not be violated! No one is demanding Muslims surrender THEIR top religious areas of Mecca and Medina!

Muslims Already Have an Arab Palestinian State! In 1922, Britain illegally gave 80% of Jewish Palestine to Muslims. The area became Jordan, giving Muslims an Arab Palestinian State on Jewish land.

Before 1948, Jews were known as the Palestinians. The Jewish newspaper, the Jerusalem Post was called the Palestine Post. The Jewish-founded electric company was Palestine Electric. The Palestinian Symphony Orchestra was all Jewish. During World War II, the British army had a Palestinian Brigade made up entirely of Jewish volunteers.

ebayer on March 16, 2010 at 3:22 pm

It can’t be stated enough times that Islam’s claim to Jerusalem as their 3rd holiest site is completely fabricated. Here are the undeniable facts:

– Verse 17:1 of the quran tells of Mohamed’s midnight ride to be shown the levels of heaven. It says he was taken from the sacred mosque (the kabba) to “al masjid al aqsa”, which means “the furthest mosque”. No location of the furthest mosque was ever specified in either the qur’an or the hadiths.
– Jerusalem was under the control of the Byzantine Empire for all of Mohamed’s life. There were no mosques anywhere in the world, including Jerusalem, except in present day Saudi Arabia.
– The current Al Aqsa mosque on the Temple Mount was built about 80 years after Mohamed died in honor of the midnight ride and was never billed as the actual site of the ride until Arafat’s uncle did it in the 1930’s for political purposes.
– That lie is now a “fact”.

stevecanuck on March 16, 2010 at 3:56 pm

My sentiments have always been clear. As Debbie would note, whom does the building of 1600 new homes for Jews hurt? Not the US, not the Europeans and certainly not the Arabs. The reaction is just plain old fashioned anti-Semitism. Why can’t Jews live and build in their own capital. If Debbie wanted to buy a home in Jerusalem, would Obama stand in her way? That’s the real crux of the issue. The world’s oldest hatred remains as virulent as ever and to repeat – there is NO rational reason to object to Jews getting new homes in Ramat Shlomo.

NONE WHATSOEVER! Now we know why Obama is enraged at Israel and not at Iran, Syria and Somalia. This fake crisis is not this Administration’s finest hour.

Again, revisionist head, revisionist non-facts. The so called demographic studies which show Arabs as being the majority of the Israel population in XXX years are just as fixed and stilted as the people who came up with that interpretation.

That canard is getting really tiresome. It is based on population studies that are at least six years old. Said stuides were so mis-represented bt the Gaza West bank brigade that it is laughable.

Tim on March 16, 2010 at 7:30 pm

And sadly the Republicans aren’t posing much of an alternative. McCain is babbling about how attention should be focussed on improving the peace process (sic) instead of on the settlements; from the frying pan into the fire. The main issue of course is defending Israel against Iran, or at the very least supporting Israel in any necessary actions. This ‘crisis’ may have been manufactured in order to divert Israel from doing anything about Iran. Just think if Netanyahu really made a speech blasting Obama for screaming about the 1,600 housing units while Iran moves towards destroying civilization. If Netanyahu or other prominent Israelis led such a publicity campaign, the Republicans would, or at least some of them, would pick up on this. But the Republicans are followers in this area, unfortunately, and not leaders.

Little Al on March 16, 2010 at 7:30 pm

    Little Al:

I agree. The Republicans come in for criticism on this issue too because they have embraced the State Department’s policy. The Bush Administration clearly embraced this policy and let Sec. of State Rice (and Powell before her) state it whenever the question came up. The only difference now is that the O’Bama Administration is louder about it. But really, this is just a spat. The real issue underlying this spat is a growing realization in Israel that THIS administration really, REALLY hates Israel; like nothin’ you’ve ever seen before. We are on the borderline of anti-Semitic expression in America that will exceed your imagination; not because it’s outrageous but rather because it will emanate from the White House. Yet they will say nothing new. They will just be louder about what was said before.

Let me also say something that I told Debbie today: I’m growing concerned that Jewish/Pro-Israel leaders are failing to confront this and past administrations on this issue. The policy is anti-Semitic; pure and simple. If the United States can tell Jews we can’t build homes in Jerusalem (where the U.S. is not sovereign), how long will it be before they tell us we can’t build houses in Arizona?

Abe Foxman heads the ADL; an organization chartered to fight anti-Semitism. His only beef with the O’Bama Administration is the “tone” of the Administration’s criticism. Why is an organization chartered to fight anti-Semitism allowing the U.S. State Department to dictate that Jews can’t build homes in Jerusalem? Where’s the outrage! Where’s the fight!

I used to avoid confronting major Jewish organizations before. After years of reading this blog, I’ve learned to speak my mind about the important stuff like this.

There is NO Santa Claus on March 16, 2010 at 10:49 pm

Obama even had the gall to say Netanyahu “wasn’t very bright”.

Mr “57 States of the Union/Austrian” speaking Obama: why won’t you release your SAT scores?

Why do you refuse to release any of your transcripts?

Netanyahu attended Harvard but he really had to qualify, not like the “Professor” who has never published any academic papers.

Obama had no qualifications to attend any top University. But in today’s anti-white world, just a letter from someone prominent can get a minority even one as stupid as Obama into Harvard

Joe Hamilton on March 16, 2010 at 8:33 pm

Obama bruzz writes, “I have a question, what will happene to Isreal in 30 years when Isreali arabs are the majority? what will bibi do?”

The only way the Arabs would constitute a majority is if more Arabs from outside are allowed to take residence west of the Jordan. The demographic studies projecting an Arab majority within 10 years or so are bogus. They’re based on PA figures which double count the Arabs of eastern Jerusalem and *don’t* count Arabs who have already emigrated. Arab reproduction rates are *falling* while Jewish rates are rising.

Excellent columns, Debbie and TINSC.

What Obama is doing to Israel is reprehensible. Ditto with those other administrations who have not only refused to defend Israel’s rights in Judea, and Samaria and the (now withdrawn) Gaza but worse, pressured Israel to either stop building housing for communities in those territories and/or pressuring Israel to withdraw from those said territories, with the differences varying only by degrees. That’s all I can add here, everyone else here in this thread (excluding the anti-Israel comments) has had this situation covered.

Ten thousand Swedes

Ran through the weeds

Pursued by one

Norwiegen.

You aren’t very pro-semitic, that’s for sure.

This is the best satire I have read in awhile.

Now let’s see if Palin or any other Republican makes the next link; from condemning President Obama, Secretary Clinton, VP Biden etc. over their anti-Semitic statements, to the next step of linking this with hand-in-hat behavior towards Iran.

You are not allowed to build houses in East Jersulaem because that land does not belong to the Israel government. What makes you think you have the universal right to build a house wherever you want?

Kayle Igelstrom,

Sorry to burst your bubble, but East Jerusalem is claimed by the GOI. You may not recognize that, but most Israelis do. If the borders were recognized and established, there wouldn’t be an Arab-Israeli conflict. At this point in time, East Jerusalem and some areas of the West Bank are governed by the GOI. And as such, Jews are allowed to build there.

Now if the GOI determines that they’ll give this land to the PA for a peace agreement, then at THAT time, it will be land that the PA controls. Until such time, Jews can build anywhere in the State of Israel.

I’m proud that the Israelis are continuing settlements, why
should they not? It’s their land, as much as the Southwest is
our land, probably more so, as their deed came from God.

The comments about the Republicans being no different than the
State Department don’t ring true to me. McCain is muddled as
usual and I wouldn’t say that he and his moderate cohorts illustrate Republican sentiment about Israel. Even McCain would have a better stance on Israel than the current junta’s
policies.

What I can’t figure out is why Jews keep voting Democrat. FDR
has been gone for quite awhile. Barry may change all that.

Let me rephrase the first sentence: Many times over the years I’ve written about the right of people to live (and buy property, if they don’t already own it, and build homes) anywhere in the world we want.

There, now you don’t sound like an asshole with no regard for human life that doesn’t practice Judaism. People like you earn a bad name for the rest of the Jewish population.

As a Jew: Fuck you.
