Fed to the Wolves: Our Soldiers in Afghanistan Don’t Have Bullets!

I received this extremely disturbing e-mail, forwarded to me by the family of a federal agent whom I know and who is deployed to Afghanistan. I know who the person is and have had contact with him in his capacity as a federal agent. He’s spoken out about this before and gotten into trouble over it, not because it’s not true . . . but because it is.

The soldier wants this story to get out: Our soldiers are sitting ducks! They don’t have enough bullets with which to defend themselves. You don’t send people into greater Jihadistan without rounds. But that’s what we’re doing. Read this disturbing letter. I’ve redacted or changed some things to protect this person’s identity. To those who don’t shoot and are not familiar with the terms, “rounds” are “bullets.” Yes, that’s right, this soldier was sent to the middle of nowhere in Afghanistan with JUST NINE BULLETS, TOTAL! Some of his men had zero bullets. How the heck are they supposed to protect themselves, much less fight a war with no ammo?

I am currently deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. I am on my second deployment. This time however, I noticed something VERY different. They sent us OUTSIDE the wire WITHOUT a full combat load. If you were to do a Google search of emergency landings of Military aircraft in Afghanistan, you would come up with numerous results. Include John Cut and Run Kerry and Joe Biden who had their chopper make a unscheduled stop. So, why in the world would we be sent out withOUT a full combat load? I have now reached my FOB [DS: Forward Operating Base], and it has been 18 hrs and I still have yet to receive it. I was sent out with 9 rounds, others had anywhere from 0 to 30 rounds. The basic combat load, 210 rounds. I am a Special Forces soldier, working with the Vermont Army National Guard.

Granted, we made it to our FOB without incident. Yet, that does NOT excuse them for failing to equip us and what about the next group?

When should a soldier expect to receive the military standard for what they consider a basic combat load of ammunition?

Vermont Governor Douglas has the 3-172IN (MTN) deployed as we speak in support of Operation Enduring freedom. We are NOT carrying the basic load…….I would suggest a Police Officer that carried ONLY a six shooter and some extra rounds on his or her belt are better off……

My men, my fellow soldiers, sure could USE your help. Please, call the Gov. Ask him when HIS troops deserve a full combat load. Think back to what happened to John Kerry and Joe Biden’s helicopter……..and numerous other aircraft that had emergency landings……they all probably had a full load of ammunition to be able to defend themselves…….

Please, help them help us.

It’s an outrage. We have no business sending soldiers anywhere without ammunition. It’s like sending out fresh meat to hungry dogs.

As a shooter, the supply of ammunition dried up right after Obozo was elected. (Supplies have been on the increase lately)We were told that much of the 9mm, 5.56mm and 7.62mm ammo was going overseas to the wars. So, if civilians couldn’t get the stuff and the military can’t lay their hands on it just where in the hell did it go????????????????

Winchester recently won a contract to provide Homeland Security with 200 million rounds of .40 caliber handgun ammunition over the next six years. The Interior Dept. also awarded Winchester the same contract. Two government agencies are going to consume 400 million rounds in six years??????????? WTF is this bullshit??????

Why should a soldier in a war zone be given the ammunition necessary to stay alive and kill the enemy when it could be distributed amongst the “desk dwellers” in D.C.????? Can things be anymore upside down than what they are now??

Bruce, I am pursuing this with a soldier IN Afghanistan and he claims the story is just a sensational news story. My point to him was it needs investigating but he refuses to accept that anything of the sort could even happen. I am frustrated that there is no further information that can be used to cause an overturning of this complete denial of even the possibility of it. I suspect this person has another motive as well. So much for the chain of command being trustworthy. It appears they are taking advantage of their remote location to avoid investigation. Please follow up on this story, it is a life or death issue that must be resolved.

This is Outrageous, these heroes had to travel to a FOB without enough bullets to defend themselves. I am going to make sure that does not happen to next deployed unit! I will let you know what is the best way to handle this, as I know being in a state Guard unit the Governor is in charge, but why would the unit commandar let the unit go in this shape? We just need to follow the money!

This isn’t new, our troops in Beirut 30 years ago was given the same treatment when their barracks was destroyed, our troops didn’t have the rounds to defend the base and cost 247 Marines to loose their lives. It’s all in the persuit of population control.

How can they not have enough rounds? I would think that SOP these days for going outside of the wire is to carry as much ammo as you want to. I can guarantee you that at any given moment there are at least 20,000 rounds protecting BHO.

I really hope this was due to some dumbass clerks in the military and nothing more menacing. Or maybe there was a muslim in charge of procuring ammo for the good guys and it never reached them. As you know, there are way too many muslims in the U.S. military willing to do the continued peaceful works of Muhammad.

How is a soldier supposed to protect himself without bullets? Uh, simple. USE a COMBAT KNIFE! They were trained to use them in training if they have no bullets or rounds to shoot with to get the enemy. The bayonet is also useful as well. Now that’s some close in stuff. If you have no bullets, use your knife and attack them with all you’ve got and gut them hard.

Tell me how you are going to get anywhere close to the muzzies to use a knife when they have automatic weapons. Don’t know if you know this Justin, but you kill your enemy as far away from you as possible. This means using firearms, not sticks and stones. That’s just one of the things they taught us in the Marines, along with training to be able to live up to the Marine rifleman’s code of “One Shot, One Kill.” But even 9 rounds only lasts so long, and then you are SOL.

I am just like every other American who gives a shit..I am outraged by this report. We all know that rumors start with a basis of truth, added to that theis person is going to great personal harm to let the American public know what is really going on over there.
I am terrified for my own child, who happen to be my ONLY child, each and every second of each and every day. I know the reasons why we are there and no matter what I support our soldiers..I also know what goes on over there from so many reliable sources it would terrify most people. We need to do something, one person can’t do it alone, but one person can get it started.
I am curious as to why the Gov. of Vermont’s phone number was not included for us to call and see about getting these answers. That kind of bothers me…why not publish the phone number if your going to publish this story?

Debbie, you could knock down a man with a 5.56 mm NATO round M-16 cartridge from 300 yards with just one shot.
Alot of men are standing and fighting anymore because of that 5.56 round. It’s interchangeable with other guns, because if it wasn’t, we’d have enormous problems with procurement of ammo and in battle we wouldn’t be able to have quick ammo exchange in the heat of battle, which is vitally important.
Many people aren’t breathing anymore because of the M-16 round. Those Taliban would scurry like rats because I know they do, when somebody gets hit. They run away, because they know that they can’t fight the U.S. Army in direct battle because they would get massacred.

He’s a SPECIAL FORCES soldier. He’s not supposed to carry an arsenal of ammunition. This is intentional because they have to carry light equipment to move quickly or be weighed down by the load of ammo on their backs. This is purely intentional. Quit blaming the Muslims for our troops having no ammo.
Maybe we should have a segregated military and deny Muslims the ability to fight. Muslims kill other Muslims, Christians kill other Christians, especially in Croatia and Serbia.
Sunni and Shi’ite kill each other, and Robert Spencer says that in the Koran a Muslim can’t kill another Muslim?

Special Forces soldiers carry light and basic packs because they are trained this way to carry light. If they didn’t they wouldn’t be stealthy and move quickly, because that’s what they were designed to do.

Were those soldiers equipped with knifes or bayonets, even?
If not, they’re screwed completely because every soldier is issued with a combat knife and taught to fire in single shots at long range because it’s more accurate and doesn’t give away your position.
9 M-16 5.56 rounds would knock down 9 Taliban soldiers. Those soldiers have marksman training, otherwise they wouldn’t be out there at all.

A special forces soldier is not a walking arsenal of ammo. He doesn’t need all the ammo that Rambo would need, he NEEDS TO TRAVEL LIGHT because he needs to strike deep and destroy the enemy. That’s the whole purpose of Special Forces, is to strike deep and be in enemy territory for days, weeks at a time. Don’t think that that survival knife can not be used for a knife to gut that Taliban or Al Qaeda bastard, because it can and it will be.

The troops were sent ot guard our southern border without guns or ammo, the troops were sent to Haiti with ammo to protect our own medical personel, etc. Seems like a pattern. I’m sure the troops will be armed with 50mm rounds when they are sent in to break up the Tea Party rally.

Debbie, this is outrageous if it’s true, but it’s hard to believe. I’m not an expert, but. Surely the cost of training, sending to Afghanistan and providing for the basic needs of a soldier is vastly greater than the cost of a 210 rounds, which, of course, he does not need replenished every day, but only after combat. Economically it’s not a cost-saving that makes sense. Other possibilities are incompetence in ordering bullets which is hardly more likely for the world’s most powerful military; and policy intended deliberately to get our fighters killed. Also hard for me to believe, even with this commander-in-chief. So I’m skeptical on this one. But I love your site, Debbie. Keep up the good work!

It sounds like some re-re-activated reserve soldier doesn’t like getting dirty. I just digested the significance of ‘Special OPS’. These guys don’t bring a lot of stuff with them. There is always one whiney numbnut in the group who must have everything explained over & over. In the Border Patrol we called them ‘What-Iffers’ and they were usually gone in 10-months or less. If you are looking for “actual evidence” think of Monica’s dress. If an operation is performed correctly, there will be no evidence.

ATK operates the US Army munitions plant called Lake City in Independence, MO. According to their own website they produce 1.3 Billion rounds of small arms ammunition. Since then, they have quadrupled the plant output. That means they produced 5.2 Billion rounds of ammo last year. All of this small arms ammo would fit the description of 5.56mm (M-16 and M-4)and 7.62mm (.30 caliber sniper rifles and machine guns). I wonder where it all is?

Fantasy land of slashing throats? Real, REAL Commandos are supposed to be doing shit like that, they’re training that way. I play military games, of course, and know alot about the military, but you can get by without ammo, many military training manual emphasize this.

I know close quarters kill are rare, but USMC and Royal Army soldiers did use bayonets in Iraq, they’re not out of place at all in modern warfare. Battles are alot closer than ever before, like 300 yards instead of 700 yards out, but the enemy is pretty damn close and sticking his head out a window.

30 rounds is 1 M-16 magazine or M-4 magazine for that matter.

Aim for the head with a NATO 5.56 x 45mm round and that bastard is dead. I’ve played ARMA, close in combat is possible. I mean you are trained to fight in close in combat, damn it. One soldier killed an insurgent with his knife and rushed the bastard with his knife and killed him at close quarters in Iraq. Look it up, man.

The military won’t take me anyway, because I have a mental disability, so there. I’m not insane, I’m an Autistic person.

Close in combat, works every time. Just ask the bayonet. I don’t just watch war movies, but real shows with real veterans that used knives up close.

Having ammo is vital though. I won’t dispute that. It does suck to have practically no ammunition. Nil. Nada. Zip. That would suck really badly. You have an enemy that you could kick his ass at close range. The British Army always has quick improvisation and resorts to the bayonet when they have no ammunition when they have nothing else. Why can’t we do the same? Are our soldiers such wimps, they won’t resort to bayonets to attack the enemy?

210 rounds is alot of ammunition. That’s 70 magazines worth of M-16A2 ammunition. That’s 210 rounds of 5.56 ammunition that will bring down the enemy. That’s plenty of ammo.

18 hours without ammo? Come on. It takes days for the Quartermaster Corps just to get ammo into Afghanistan and give ammo to 18,000 other soldiers.

Soldiers are encouraged to take as much ammo as possible with them.

210 rounds is 7 magazines, not 70.
1 magazine holds 30 rounds. A magazine pouch holds 3 magazines, that would be 90 rounds. You have 2 magazine pouches on your web belt and that would be 6 magazines with 180 rounds. You have 1 magazine in your weapon, that is 30 rounds, your combat load is now 210 rounds.

if your about to go into a hot area you have to triple that at least.

since you can’t do basic math and have no real life experience just shut the f@#$ up.

When I was in the first Gulf War they gave me 100 rounds because I was attached to a headquarters unit. We were going to have an assigned security force and they didn’t expect us to have to shoot. I went to a friend in an infantry unit and got 2000 more rounds and some grenades. The look on their faces when I turned in all that ammo before coming home was priceless. But I refused to be low on ammo or water.

I heard our soldiers aren’t allowed to bring along their own body armour because ‘they’re “out of uniform”‘.
Compared to military training, equipment, etc. bullets are drop-in-the-bucket dirt-cheap.
Soldiers have been short-changed on ammo before, told not to load their weapons, etc. on purpouse.

No ammo…Why? Is the government trying to make the war look “fair”? Don’t want to kill too many of theirs compared to ours? Does anybody want to win this stinkin’ war in the first place!? Sacrificing our men/women for any other cause than total victory…what a waste, what a shame.

I am an avid shooter and I can tell you that since Obama got into office there has been a shortage of ammo for people like me. It has just gotten a lot harder to find and purchase handgun ammo specifically. I thought that it was due to people being scared that BHO would pass more anti-weapon legislation. I also wonder if it’s something that the government or trial attorneys are doing to make it less profitable for companies to manufacture ammo. I wonder if a military shortage in ammo might be related to the civilian one?

This happened to my dad in the 70’s in Germany. Right after Ramstein got bombed, Carter sent them outside to guard their post with guns but no bullets. What were they supposed to do, yell obscenities at the enemy?

If this is true, this is even worse than when they sent soldiers to Iraq without body armor. It’s totally inexcusable.

I would be inclined to believe it’s validity based on the fact that they are sending them over with M-4 with a short range. I heard the M-4 is only good for about 200 meters! When I was in the M-16 A-2 was good out to 500 meters with good ammunition. Why in the world aren’t they arming them with the distance that they need to survive? This was one of our strengths.

One of the first acts of Barry Soetoro was to destroy all brass from military installations rather than sell it to the ammunition reloaders in America. This resulted in a severe shortage of ammo nation wide for private citizens and police agencies.

Did Clinton NOT have an entire aircraft carrier armed with unarmed sailors?

I think this is BS. ammoman.com has a ton of 5.56 ammo available to civilians. If you don’t think the Feds would slide in there and confiscate every last round, then you’re not living in the United States. I suspect the SOCOM guy’s FOB Supply Officer is drunk, or engaging in black marketeering, because the ONE thing EVERY FOB has plenty of is ammunition. The cascading consequences of NOT having ammunition, beyond the obvious ‘feeding raw meat to hungry dogs’ would be a total breakdown in the command structure, followed by courts martial all the way up to McChrystal.

Last year WalMart was limiting ammo purchases to 2 per customer. I do not know if the shortage of popular ammo has been restocked or not because I stocked up before this happened.

I do not think this is BS. I read a similar article on a Military Blog a couple of weeks ago.

My 19 year old nephew is straight out of Army boot camp… He is 6’6 and about to be sent to Afghanistan..
