What Are Your Home Remedies for My Illness?

By Debbie Schlussel

I’ve been violently ill all day long and couldn’t keep anything down, including hot chai tea (maybe the pepper in it is too much?).  So what should I do?  I’m afraid to even drink water, as that didn’t stay down either, nor did the orange juice (but it was blood red orange juice–my favorite, so it’s a little stronger than the normal kind).  But I’m soooooo thirsty.  And I have the chills.  I tried to watch mindless TV, but even that made me sick.  You have no idea how many food commercials there are until the mere sight of any solid food makes you ill.  Yuck. Plus my biceps and shoulders kill from an hour of push-ups and pull-ups at the gym, yesterday. I know, whine, whine, whine, but I really feel crappy, and that’s how I cope.

frownyface

What are your home remedies?  I’m almost thinking of drinking some cheap wine (Manischewitz Blackberry–as bad a rap as Manischewitz gets, it’s not bad), so I’ll be able to fall asleep.  What do you suggest?  The last time I asked readers for suggestions for my world class cold, I tried several of your remedies, and they worked like a charm, helping ease my illness and up my comfort level and energy.  I have a bottle of seltzer water in my fridge, but I’m afraid to drink it, given my experiences earlier in the day.

So what should I do?  I’ll try anything and everything.  Almost.

I hate to say this, but you might have food poisoning. I had it once, it was the worst 4 days of my life. I had the exact same symptoms. Even a sip of water would make me violently ill. The only thing you can do is just ride it out. Hopefully it’s something less severe and you’ll get over it soon.

White Rook on February 1, 2010 at 9:42 pm

Mint tea & honey. Get well soon.

Larry on February 1, 2010 at 9:45 pm

try chamomile tea, no sweetening

DS_ROCKS! on February 1, 2010 at 9:48 pm

Deb, if it is food poisoning and you have a bad case of diarrhea and the upchucks…AS I HAVE HAD IN YEARS PAST AND IT IS FUGLY…you run the risk of being dehydrated. You will have to take something for the diarrhea like say Immodium.

Then comes flat soda or ginger ale…AND IT CAN’T BE DIET! Gatorade or any electrolyte drink will help replenish fluids.

When you can eat solids, plenty of salt…pretzels, saltine crackers, then dry toast, boiled chicken etc.

Of course if all else fails, GET TO THE DOCTOR!

Bob Porrazzo on February 1, 2010 at 9:51 pm

Dear Debbie: Sorry you’re ill, hope you feel better soon. I’m not a doctor and I can’t diagnose you. Having said that, I agree with White Rook, it sounds like it could be food poisoning. If you can’t keep down any fluids at all, you are in danger of dehydration, so you must keep trying to hydrate. Ginger ale — cool, not cold — is great for an upset stomach. Sip it slowly and see if you can tolerate it. I cherish Pepto Bismol for this kind of thing. I keep it on hand, and it always helps. Nibble on light toast too and see if that stays down. Refuah shelama (= complete recovery)!

Try some gatorade. It’s good for stopping throw ups.

If you are throwing up and fever……this is an infection, and you need antibiotics to knock that out. Get some antibiotics immediately. Once you start on a high dosage of antibiotics, the vomiting should stop pretty quickly, and the fever gradually comes down. Until you get the antibiotics, you will have a problem with vomiting….even if you have to go to the emergency room….I’d do it at once !

You have to stay hydrated, even if that means sucking on an ice-cube.

When I have a week stomach and haven’t eaten in awhile, I start with Velveeta slices. I ususally start with half a slice, wait a couple of hours….and if that digests ok…then graduate to a whole slice….if that stays down, then I try two slices, wait a couple of hours and so on.

Maxine on February 1, 2010 at 10:04 pm

Instant breakfast with seltzer. This was prescribed by an internist when I couldn’t keep anything down for a couple of weeks. for some reason, this stayed down, and provided nourishment.

Congratulations boy or girl : )

JOY on February 1, 2010 at 10:05 pm

There’s nothing wrong with puking, you’ll still need to keep hydrated no matter what, water will help regulate your body temperature keep drinking liquids, even if you bring them up, you’ll have a chance to purge whatever, if anything, that’s reactive. Keep warm and get well soon, I had a feeling you were under the weather because of your light postings.

mark hammond on February 1, 2010 at 10:06 pm

Highest priority is fluids. You DON’T want to get (even more) dehydrated!! Gatorade. Freeze it into a slushy if you’re having trouble keeping liquids down, and sip. Just throw a quart bottle in the freezer for a while.

dm60462 on February 1, 2010 at 10:08 pm

Gatorade mixed with 7-up and Saltine Crackers!

carin maher on February 1, 2010 at 10:10 pm

Sorry to hear your feeling so badly. When I get like that an India pale ale usually makes me feel better. I may not be better, but I feel better.

Richard on February 1, 2010 at 10:14 pm

Debbie, the only thing that worked for me when I was violently ill in a third world country was Coca Cola, made with sugar and not high fructose corn syrup. It took the edge off, but that’s it. Some stores call it “mexican Coke” because now it is imported from Mexico!

If you’re still having the heaves after 24 hours, GET TO A DOCTOR. It could just be the stomach flu, or food poisoning, or it could be more serious. Please don’t take any chances.

Kelly on February 1, 2010 at 10:18 pm

kosher for Passover Coke also has no corn syrup

    mk750 on February 2, 2010 at 4:10 am

Hi Debbie! Sorry you are so ill. Ginger is great for nausea. As for keeping hydrated I recomend you stay away from Gatorade. Full of chemicals your body does not need. Have some water with a slice of orange or lime. It will keep you hydrated. If you don’t feel better by tomorrow I would see a dr.

Abbey on February 1, 2010 at 10:23 pm

Dear Debbie,
Sorry to hear that you are feeling bad. You add so much light and wit to our otherwise darkened landscape. Hope that you are quickly restored.
The one tip I could give is classic, Home Grown, Made in Michigan, Vernors. Full flavor and not Diet.
Also, rice pudding or Banana’s. Another idea used for children is Pedialyte. Pedialyte restores your electrolytes which, as you prolly know, is vital to maintaining your internal cellular equilibrium.
Get well soon. Hope you are soon Revved up to Roar !! G-d bless.

RS: VERNORS! That’s what my grandma used to give me when I had a stomach-ache as a kid. Forgot about that. DS

RoadsScholar on February 1, 2010 at 10:25 pm

For the fever and to help you sleep without shivering, get under an electric blanket at full power. One night usually breaks my fever and I’ll feel better the following day. Food poisoning will also go away after a day or two, moving down your system from vomiting to diarrhea. You will be able to eat again after 24 or so hours.

D. Showalter on February 1, 2010 at 10:25 pm

If you have a fever and cough it could be swine flu. Might want to see a doctor for that.

Suz on February 1, 2010 at 10:46 pm

debbbie i’m a physician from your shtetl (graduated at the top of my med school class). i’m a huge cannabis advocate, works for nauseau better than anything else on the planet. the concern is the underlying cause. if you suspect food poisoning associated with high fever and inability to tolerate anything by mouth and haven’t improved you should bite the bullet and go to an urgent care clinic/ER for IV fluids. @ maxine, that’s totally incorrect. most common bacterial etiologies of food poisoning actually get worse with antibiotics. it’s the doctor’s job to assess the symptoms to ascertain the most likely bacterial culprits and then decide if antibiotics are warranted. of course as with most other complaints, sore throat, cough, etc, most doctors prescribe antibiotics when they’re not warranted, leading to problems with resistance, unnecessary side effects. . .

drdean on February 1, 2010 at 10:50 pm

At the very least try and let an ice (not I.C.E.!) cube melt in your mouth as a way of slowly absorbing water. Dehydration is your first concern.

Nick Fury on February 1, 2010 at 10:57 pm

be careful if you are running fever too… I had the Norwalk virus a few years ago & it was the worst alimentary illness of my life – STAY HYDRATED – the recommendation for gatorade, 7-up & crackers is just the ticket. if you are running a fever, you gotta get tylenol / ibuprofen or the like down – try the children’s liquid if that stays down better. worst case is go to the doctor for the big guns like compazine. have to be careful it’s not an intestinal parasite too, but that would last longer than just a couple of days.

praying for your speedy recovery

Gail on February 1, 2010 at 11:06 pm

Sounds like an enemy musta slipped you some halal chow! Seriously, the best thing is to just hydrate with water and ride it out. Hope you bounce back okay!

baseboru on February 1, 2010 at 11:10 pm

Deb – if it is food poisoning, get your hands on some activated charcoal. It will absorb the toxins and allow you to eliminate them.

Plus you need to rehydrate yourself – Gatorade or the like will do the trick seeing that you’re young and in shape.

Let it run it’s course – in this instance you do not want to stop the runs – you want to get whatever is in the stomache/bowels out.

Andy on February 1, 2010 at 11:17 pm

especially if it not FOOD poisoning but the other kind.

    mk750 on February 2, 2010 at 4:11 am

Hi Debbie. I’m sorry to hear that you’re ill. I would try the ice like Nick Fury said and if you’re not well by tommorrow morning, I would see a doctor.

JeffE on February 1, 2010 at 11:20 pm

Why don’t you just go to the doctor or emergency room if you can’t get an appointment right away?

My grandmother from way back in the sticks always said cheese and crackers would “daub” you up.

Just go to the doctor, woman!

Hope you get well soon.

Jeff W. on February 1, 2010 at 11:29 pm

My darling wife just spent 24 hours in the hospital getting rehydrated (plus potassium) with just such symptoms.

The one thing that surprised me when she was in the hospital was that instead of water they gave her ginger ale, Sprite, or 7-Up as a source of fluid. Apparently water will make folks vomit if the stomach is in too much of an uproar.

But Debbie, seriously consider a visit to the doctor or the ER if this keeps up.

Rhymes With Right on February 1, 2010 at 11:29 pm

I am sorry Debbie you are not feeling well.. I am also sorry that the postings on home remedies is making me feel sick….two years ago I was so sick like that I will never forget. I have no home remedies other than you have to stay hydrated. I drink Vernors… not sure what it is with Vernors but I am usually able to keep it down… Get rest!

sharon on February 1, 2010 at 11:39 pm

IF YOUR urine is yellow or dark yellow you are dehydrated. Clear or faintly yellow is okay.

Bright yellow… you are taking vitamins with iron.

Gatorade, ice cubes, popsicles to replenish water levels. Dehydration can be serious and needs to be monitored and corrected. I took a winter survival course in Canada that was quite brutal. One unit was taught by an Auschwitz survivor. I’ll never forget those large tattooed numbers on his arm. Anywho, monitor and correct.

In the wild you have to self-diagnose, and treat. But you’re not in the wild, so see a doctor! Especially, since it could be food poisoning!!

The Canadien on February 1, 2010 at 11:42 pm

Everybody here is right, dehydration is your biggest problem right now. The trouble is, if you do have food poisoning, even a small sip of fliud will cause vomiting. So if you try to drink something, it will just make things worse. If you don’t get better soon, you should see a doctor. In a worse-case scenario, you might need an IV to get you re-hydrated. Again, hopefully it’s something not too extreme and you’ll feel better soon.

White Rook on February 1, 2010 at 11:56 pm

Peppermint or wintergreen livesavers–not sugar-free–are very
soothing and may help the nausea and vomiting. Get well soon.

Josh on February 2, 2010 at 12:24 am

I think the ginger ale, 7-up, drink (usually) works. (If you pinch your skin and it’s not “elastic” it means you’re getting severely dehydrated…and probably need to see a doctor.) I’ve read that beverages containing alcohol or caffeine should also be avoided.

I hope you recover soon!

J.S. on February 2, 2010 at 12:37 am

Debbie, the best rehydrating solution was discovered by a doctor years ago and has saved many lives in third world countries. It might seem like a disgusting combination and it tastes about as bad as it sounds, kinda like really bad gatorade, but it works especially in cases of uncontrollable dhiarrhea, one of the main causes of dehydration.

To 1 liter/quart of purified water
Add: 1/2 teaspoon of table salt
1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
8 teaspoons of sugar
(1/4 teaspoon of salt substitute for potassium if available)
Sip in small amounts.
This has helped me make it through a day at work many times when I had the stomach flu.
Saltine crackers with lots of salt are a great start to solid food once you feel you can hold something down. Good luck and get well soon!

theShadow on February 2, 2010 at 12:44 am

Debbie, may you feel better soon, before you even read this far down.
To all of the other good advice, may I add:
A hot soak or shower. It always helps me to relax/feel better.

Douglas Q on February 2, 2010 at 12:46 am

I’d recommend hot cocoa. It always works when you come down with a severe winter illness. A hot sweet drink calms the stomach and the chocolately qualities will have you feeling better in no time. It works where everything else doesn’t do the trick!

NormanF on February 2, 2010 at 12:50 am

hey Debbie…

I think I had the same thing last year …sickist i’d been for 30 years…

I’m never ill, but for a while, I really thought this bout might kill me…

try slow sipping of Gatorade to keep your electrolytes up & non greasy, chicken-noodle soup, till you can get bank on the solid stuff…

get well, my dear, we need you!

Babies who are dehydrated do very well with Pedialyte. I tried it once when I had what sounds like what you had.

Pedialyte comes in many flavors, (the most tolerable to grown-ups are the ‘Fruit flavor’ or ‘Bubble gum flavor’).

Like all fluid replenishments for dehydration, they’re ‘salty’, and are best taken when ‘cold’.

When refrigerated, I could finish a half liter even though I didn’t care for water or seltzer.

Even though a food poisoning seems likely, it could also be a viral flu-like illness, or, less likely, a hepatitis.

Make sure you’re not jaundice,
and if you have any doubts, get a Doctor/friend to visit you, or go to the ER.

Get Well Soon!

Hot milk and honey? Chamomile tea? FROM SCRATCH chicken broth?

Miranda Rose Smith on February 2, 2010 at 2:26 am

I had food poisining a year ago from eating pistachios shortly before the scare became public. I had tea and sherbet for a day or so, then toast and chicken soup, maybe with a little rice in it, and then very mild Stouffer TV dinners like tuna and noodles, chicken and noodles, etc.

Little Al on February 2, 2010 at 2:39 am

Thanks to all of you who thought to remind Ms. Schlussel to drink so she wouldn’t dehydrate. I didn’t think of that.

Miranda Rose Smith on February 2, 2010 at 2:40 am

Ginger ale with crushed ice, or anything with ginger, even ginger snaps. Hope you’re already feeling better 🙂

Zippy on February 2, 2010 at 2:40 am

Debbie ice chips and popsicles to help fight dehydration also wet a wash cloth and breath through it to help keep your airways and throught moist. A humidifier will also work like the wash cloth. Gatorade or pedialyte freeze it and then berak it into chips if you need to. These all help for mebut I have Crohn’s disease and know the cause of my problems and have to do this dance from time to time. If you are like this longer that a day or if you do the pinch test and your skin doesn’t snap back in 5 seconds GET TO A DOCTOR or CALL EMT’s!!!

Mark on February 2, 2010 at 4:32 am

Debbie,
Start by sucking on ice chips, then, go to Vernor’s , or Coke, taking one teaspoon every hour.Plain Lipton’s tea with real sugar, slowly sipped can help dehydration.Once any of the above remains in your system ,try saltines, and/or, toast with some
jelly, or preserves, WITH PECTIN. Once that stays down, slowly,
keep adding one new thing at a time.Gatorade has the electrolytes you need.Introduce Cream of Wheat with sugar, or
jelly with pectin, and only a little milk.Milk can upset the stomach. Try sherbert, popsicles,soft-boiled egg mixed with cut-up toast. Jello. Then, start out with boiled chicken and potato, turkey breast, chicken soup, and other mild, bland food for a few days.Stay in, because it is too damn cold.Call the doctor.
Just take care of yourself and use common sense. Feel better,
Carolyn

Deb – another thing I just thought of is Oregano Oil. Take the oil and fill a gel cap with it – it will kill just about anything.

Also, looking at my herbal emergency medicine book (I’m studying to become a Master Herbalist) – 2-6 drops of Lobelia Tincture should stop the vomiting (available in just about every health food store) Also 1-2 cups of Ginger tea will help also

Andy on February 2, 2010 at 6:54 am

Also, cola syrup will help to settle the stomache. available at the drugstore, or sip down some flat coke.

Andy on February 2, 2010 at 6:55 am

Porrazzo -Immodium or lomotil – type drugs are the worst thing you can do if it is food poisoning. The body is desperately trying to flush out the pathogen, and drugs that slow peristalsis just keep the toxins inside.

I once had a terrific fever and made a soup of onions, garlic, ginger and chillies. It was like consuming fire but it purged me nicely and I was ok the next day. Not for wimps though.

roger on February 2, 2010 at 10:30 am

Debbie-sounds like food poisoning; call your dr-they can prescribe something for you. I cannot remember what the name of the medicine is-I used to travel alot and always had it with me just in case-it’s a small pill. Drink lots of gatorade-none of the weird flavors-the medicine will knock you out and you will wake up feeling lots better. It gives your stomach & body the rest it needs. You might also try a piece of plain dry toast.
