For First Time, USA Takes #1 AND #2 in This Draft

By
For the first time ever, the U.S. dominates the top spots in the national draft for a major sports league, with U.S. born-and-raised athletes being drafted Numbers One and Two.
Unfortunately, it’s the least popular of the major sports with a dwindling fan base and ratings. Just ask FOX and ESPN, which dumped it, and NBC and OLN/Versus, which picked it up.
Still, Congrats Patrick Kane and James vanRiemsdyk. U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A!

…..I like hockey. The problem is, the NHL doesn’t know how to market their league. That’s probably why the other networks dropped the NHL.
And debbie…OLN is now Versus. Where have you been??

I can’t believe that this is some kind of triumph for you.
Do you see no irony in the fact that you’re trumpeting your anti-foreigner blather using a pawn with the good, solid American surname of “vanRiemsdyk”?

Doc,
Get a grip. As a Canadian (my name is a clue), I’m perfectly happy to see that hockey is strong enough in the US to produce such talented kids.

Greatest sport ever invented. Who cares that it was invented by the Canadians. One of the proudest days of my life was sitting with my four year old son on my lap in 1980 watching the time delayed USA vs. Russia “Miracle on Ice”. We didn’t have much to be proud of the Carter in the White House, double digit inflation, unemployment and interest rates. Long lines at the gas pump and hostages in Iran. But for one brief moment a bunch of kids proved that, if we put our minds to it, Americans can do anything. Even playing Canada’s game. Hockey has been my favorite sport ever since. I think its great that America is producing such outstanding hockey players.

Hockey is like basketball & baseball—only fun if you play it—WATCHING it is tedious at best…it’s not like those games are the NFL

Yeah, the NFL, thats exciting. Watching a bunch of 300 pound knuckle draggers set up, run into each other, stop, set up again, run into each other again. Sorry, there is no flow and its not fast enough. If you understand the game of hockey it is very exciting. Its fast and there is an incredible degree of athleticism and skill involved and pound for pound, hockey players are the toughest athletes (with the possible exception of boxers) in the world. I do agree with you on basketball. Watching ten guys run up and down a court is boring and a simple hand slap is a foul that stops the game. There isn’t any blood either.
