Tarek Mehanna, Yet Another Privileged, Homegrown Islamic Terrorist
But, wait, I thought American Muslims were supposed to be more moderate. I thought they were supposed to be different from the 19 hijackers on 9/11, that they hijacked their religion. I thought that only poor Muslims–who don’t have economic opportunities and are deprived and, therefore, angry–are the ones who want to commit terrorist acts. Well, as you know, I didn’t believe any of this conventional baloney.
Tarek Mehanna is yet another example of how Islam and its inclination to destroy us knows no borders or nationalities or socio-economic strata. And how it’s not “them” hijacking the religion, but rather, the religion hijacking them.
Read the federal criminal complaint against Mehanna.
Mehanna is a U.S. citizen, college grad, and from a wealthy Boston-area Muslim-American family. Oh, and he was such a loyal American that this Muslim took joy in repeatedly watching video of an American soldier being mutilated to death in Iraq.
A man living in suburban Boston was arrested on Wednesday on federal terrorism charges after the authorities said he had conspired with others to attack people at a shopping mall in the United States, and to attack two members of the executive branch of the federal government.
Remember when Muslims immigrant Sulejman Talovic murdered several people execution-style at a Salt Lake City’s Trolley Square mall on the eve of Valentine’s Day?
We were told by authorities that it “wasn’t terrorism.” Uh-huh.
Boston investigators arrested Tarek Mehanna, 27, on charges of conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists. The conspiracy occurred between 2001 and 2008, said acting United States attorney Michael K. Loucks at a news conference in Boston on Wednesday.
Mr. Loucks said Mr. Mehanna had conspired with others — including Ahmad Abousamra, who has fled to Syria — and had “multiple conversations” to carry out attacks in and outside of the United States.
“The conversations went so far as to discuss the logistics of a mall attack including coordination, weapons needed and the possibility of attacking emergency responders,” Mr. Loucks said, with plans to “randomly shoot people” in a mall, coming from different entrances.
However, Mr. Loucks said, Mr. Mehanna, a United States citizen, could not obtain weapons to carry out the attack. . . .
In May 2008, Mr. Mehanna graduated from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, where his father is a professor of medicinal chemistry. Mr. Mehanna has been living with his parents in the affluent Boston suburb of Sudbury, Mass. He was out on bail from an earlier arrest, in November 2008, at Logan airport, when he was charged with lying to federal investigators in a 2006 interview about a friend and suspected terrorist, Daniel Maldonado.
Prosecutors said Mr. Mehanna lied about his contact with him and where Mr. Maldonado was living at the time. Mr. Mehanna, prosecutors said, had sought to obtain automatic weapons from him. But Mr. Maldonado, a native of Massachusetts and a convert to Islam, has since been imprisoned and serving a 10-year sentence for training with Al Qaida in Somalia.
The new complaint against Mr. Mehanna also states that he and his associates traveled to Pakistan, Iraq, Syria and Yemen, seeking training from various terrorist groups to fight against American soldiers. But the groups rejected their efforts to join them.
To fuel their fervor for jihad activities, the complaint states that Mr. Mehanna and his associates obtained, watched and distributed videos of an attack in Iraq and of a mutilation of an American soldier.
Yes, let’s hear it for those moderate upper-class loyal American Muslims. Tarek Mehanna is Exhibit A.

An American Muslim goes “native” and dreams up plans to gun down fellow Americans in a shopping mall. And we’re told he’s too American to contemplate harming us.
Until the Feds discovered it wasn’t an inhibition at all. We gotta ask… how many Tarek Mehannas are out there? Just because he got caught doesn’t mean it will happen to others. And another terrorist attack on US soil is just a matter of time.
America… desperate but not serious about fighting terror.
