This story has so infuriated me that I feel compelled to comment. My first malevolent thought was directed toward the city of Detroit and it’s obvious hubris and disregard for the rule of law. Apparently, the liberal dominated city council of Detroit feels it is above all legal precedent (as it pertains to ownership of property), dating back to the Magna Charta, by abrogating it’s responsibility to protect property. The obviously mentally deranged “squatter” is a criminal; guilty of aggravated trespass, theft,vandalism, and a myriad of other violations that are felonious and deserving of interdiction, arrest, and detention by the proper authorities. The fact that age old property laws are not being applied by the city and it’s police force is something I never would have imagined could happen in the USA. Simply astounding and very disturbing.

Debbie, I implore you to assist this woman in sanctifying her property rights while bringing attention to this theater of the absurd moment; exposing the “do-gooders” who felt they know more about property rights than almost a thousand years of legal precedents that suggest otherwise. Anecdotally,many years ago I was having a heck of a time with my 12 year old daughter (go figure). After exhausting every method of non-lethal discipline I could think of I was reduced to a mouth drooling, chronically shaking, confabulating zombie; often found curled up in the fetal position staring into the dark abyss that had become my existence. (OK, I exaggerate but I think you get the picture). Finally, I came to the brilliant idea that the methods employed by Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain in the 15th century known to all as the Inquisition were remarkably effective and perhaps I might borrow some of the same “techniques”. As you might imagine my wife was not particularly supportive of that option (although to her credit she did give it some serious thought)and as such I was back to the couch, drooling and mumbling.

I saw my Rabbi a few days after the “Inquisition Method of Child Rearing” was tabled and asked for his thoughts. Due to my diminished mental capacities I don’t remember all what he said except for this, a phrase taken, I believe from the Talmud: For when your children least deserve your love is when they need it the most. That coupled with time and Rabbinically prescribed shots of vodka (and schnapps)resulted in us seeing our way through the nightmare.

You indicated that you might represent her pro-bono if not for her moronic countenance. Perhaps the most nescient of us are if not deserving, needing of your expertise and advocacy, if for no other reason than the fact that they are so helpless. All kidding aside, I really do hope that you reconsider and help this woman. The case will demand national attention and bring transparency to the nefarious deeds of the extremist liberals that have taken Detroit hostage. Good luck!

If you were going legal services to her, you should consider it. It’s not about one stupid liberal. It’s much larger than her. It’s about property rights and preventing the useless class from successfully sniping away at the rights of the productive class. Every battle the useless class wins means another decay in our civilization.

First of all, it’s clearly not a racially-tainted impasse. The home owner seems to have a black child, so it isn’t “black vs, white”, but rather, “black vs. white and another black”, technically.

Secondly, I don’t think it’s as open-and-shut as it seems at first glance.

Why did the owner abandon the property for a year? If the squatter didn’t move in, would it have become just another crack den or get burned down on a “Devil’s Night” in Detroit?

Is it reasonable to expect to buy a house in a run-down area of Detroit, then ignore it for a year, and have it “not* be torched or vandalized? I don’t think so. And if that’s teh case, then maybe the squatter did actually do the woman a favor.

Just an idea: Does anyone think it’s POSSIBLE that Ms. Peterson bought the house as a speculation? Even her leaving it vacant for a year suggests that. JUST PERHAPS, she bought the old rat trap and hoped the neighborhood would ULTIMATELY be gentrified and she could clean up on selling the real estate.

It dose seem a bit odd that at one point Peterson had leased the house to the squatter. Something is quite a miss in this story.

Also, she can’t forcibly remove squatters, but can’t the police?

It seem like maybe, these two got a long just fine, until there was some disagreement and now Peterson calling this women a squatter.

What amazes me is the woman left her property unattended for a a year in that neighborhood and expected to come home to it exactly the same as when she left.
Does the squatter’s lease have the owner’signature on it?
Who authorized the work done on the property that enabled the lien?

Nice post Deb. Drew & Mike are also talking about squatters this morning. Detroit sux and has been on a downward spiral since ’67, the year I was born. Love your comment about how “stupid do-gooders from the suburbs, that are buying homes in Detroit are wasting their time & money there.” Itz a total clusterbleep of crime, dick-heads in every level of goverment, education and city services. But at least the Tigers won their series and thatz gotta count for something. I’m finally moving to Phoenix after being born and raised in the Detroit Metro area….Da Svidanya!!!

It’s time to move to a CONSTITUTIONALLY FREE state. Liberals fascists not welcome in either Texas or Arizona. Arizona would be my top pick. I’m in Texas but give the edge to Arizona because its a Constitutional carry (both open and concealed) state. Southern Arizona (Tucson) is liberal territory but PHX north is safe for Patriots. Got my eye on Flagstaff… It’s at least 20 degrees cooler than PHX in the summer and less than 150 miles north. There is plenty of snow in the winter for you Michiganders!

Heidi Peterson was a libertarian congressional candidate. I though that was the opposite of liberal. It is too bad that the moron who wrote this article didn’t do a Google search to find that out. It would have taken less than a minute to do so. Why is this a political issue? Do you think that liberals really like squatters and support squatting? Wouldn’t Heidi Peterson be better off using the clinic program at a local law school than having the moron who wrote this article represent her? The answer is yes. I bet a student at a local law school could perform a Google search so the student would be one step ahead of Debbie Schlussel.

People should be skeptical of this story. Are people really trying to make money of property investments in Detroit. Did Heidi Peterson actually say this or is this something that is assumed. Also, it is reported that the squatter lived at the house but if you listen to the local news interview Heidi Peterson makes it sound like she doesn’t know her. It seems like Debbie Schlussel heard a news story and decided to turn it into propaganda when she does not know much information about the background or motivations of the people involved.
